ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Caring ability is one of the most important indicators regarding care outcomes. A valid and reliable scale for the evaluation of caring ability in mothers with preterm infants is lacking. OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted with the aim of designing and psychometric evaluation of the tool for assessing caring ability in mothers with preterm infants. METHOD: A mixed-method exploratory design was conducted from 2021 to 2023. First the concept of caring ability of mothers with preterm infants was clarified using literature review and comparative content analysis, and a pool of items was created. Then, in the quantitative study, the psychometric properties of the scale were evaluated using validity and reliability tests. A maximum likelihood extraction with promax rotation was performed on 401 mothers with the mean age of 31.67 ± 6.14 years to assess the construct validity. RESULT: Initial caring ability of mother with preterm infant scale (CAMPIS) was developed with 64 items by findings of the literature review, comparative content analysis, and other related questionnaire items, on a 5-point Likert scale to be psychometrically evaluated. Face, content, and construct validity, as well as reliability, were measured to evaluate the psychometric properties of CAMPIS. So, the initial survey yielded 201 valid responses. The three components: 'cognitive ability'; knowledge and skills abilities'; and 'psychological ability'; explained 47.44% of the total observed variance for CAMPIS with 21 items. A subsequent survey garnered 200 valid responses. The confirmatory factor analysis results indicated: χ2/df = 1.972, comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.933, and incremental fit index (IFI) = 0.933. These results demonstrate good structural, convergent, discriminant validity and reliability. OMEGA, average inter-item correlation (AIC), intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for the entire scale were at 0.900, 0.27 and 0.91 respectively. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the psychometric evaluation of CAMPIS, it was found that the concept of caring ability in the Iranian mothers with preterm infants is a multi-dimensional concept, which mainly focuses on cognitive ability, technical ability, and psychological ability. The designed scale has acceptable validity and reliability characteristics that can be used in future studies to assess this concept in the mothers of preterm infants.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the effect of a video teach-back method on continuous family nursing care of stroke patients. Methods: Stroke patients hospitalized in our hospital between March 2020 and March 2023 who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into an intervention group (n = 45), who received routine health education plus video teach-back training of caregivers, and a control group (n = 45), who received routine health education only. The effects on nursing-related variables were compared between the two groups. Results: Total scores representing the caring ability of caregivers in the intervention group increased significantly over time relative to baseline and were higher than those of the control group. Scores representing the care burden of caregivers in the intervention group decreased significantly over time and were lower than those of the control group. Conclusion: The teach-back method combined with video education improves the nursing ability of family caregivers and can improve the self-care ability of stroke patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The interaction between elderly people with disabilities and their caregivers and the improvement of caregiver burden is important for elderly people with disabilities and their caregivers. This study aims to explore the multiple mediating roles of caregiver's caring ability and resilience in depression in the elderly people with disabilities on caregiver burden. METHODS: A total of 246 elderly people with disabilities at home and their family caregivers from 5 regions were investigated by questionnaires, including the General Information Questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire, the Family Caregiver Task Inventory, the Resilience Scale, and the Caregiver Burden Interview. A multiple mediation model was constructed and tested. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed that the caregiver burden of disabled elderly men is higher than that of women; the lower the level of self-care of disabled elderly individuals, the greater the burden on their caregivers (both P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that depression of the disabled elderly people was positively correlated with the caregiver burden (P<0.01). Caregiver's caring ability was positively correlated with caregiver's resilience (P<0.01), and both were negatively correlated with caregiver burden (both P<0.01). The multiple mediating effects of caregiver caring capacity and resilience between depression of the disabled elderly people and caregiver burden were significant, with the mediating effects of caregiver caring capacity and resilience accounting for 68.9% and 26.2% of the total effect, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Depression in the elderly people with disabilities can indirectly affect caregiver burden through the caregiver's caring ability and resilience. Families of older people with disabilities need to focus on both the elderly and their caregivers. It is possible to reduce the caregiver burden and improve the physical and mental health of the dyads by empowering the caregiver's caring ability and resilience.

ABSTRACT

Background: The development of nursing students' ability to care for children is an important part of their nursing education. However, nursing students' understanding of children's experiences in healthcare is vague. The traditional lecture approach is not conducive to the cultivation of humanistic care competencies for hospitalized children. Objectives: This study aimed at exploring the effectiveness of narrative pedagogy on developing nursing students' ability to care for hospitalized children. Design: A quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design. Setting: and participants: A purposive sampling method was used for this study. The study participants included 588 first-year nursing students in four classes at a university in western China. The students enrolled in a nursing humanistic curriculum were divided into an experimental group (295 students) and a control group (293 students). Methods: During the 5 weeks of hospitalized children's care program, the experimental group received narrative pedagogy, while the control group received traditional teaching with 2 credit hours per week. Data were collected quantitatively using the Caring Ability Inventory (CAI), as well as qualitatively through individual interviews and reflective diaries. Results: The average scores on the CAI and subscales significantly improved for both groups. As a result of controlling for the effect of pre-test scores, the experimental group had significantly higher post-test scores on the CAI than the control group. Qualitative content analysis demonstrated that narrative pedagogy enhanced nursing students' emotional experiences and facilitated their understanding of the caring practice for sick children. Conclusion: Narrative pedagogy has positive implications for improving students' care competencies for hospitalized children.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The aim of this study is to explore the mechanism by which three factors of compassion fatigue affect caring ability in young psychiatric nurses. METHODS: We used the Professional Quality of Life Scale and Caring Ability Inventory to investigate 309 young nurses in three psychiatric hospitals in Heilongjiang. Dominance analysis and chain mediation model were performed to explore the effects of three factors of compassion fatigue on caring ability. RESULTS: (1) The three factors of compassion fatigue affected the caring ability of young in the order compassion satisfaction > burnout>secondary traumatic stress by dominance analysis; (2) burnout played a partially mediating effect between compassion satisfaction and caring ability; and (3) secondary traumatic stress and burnout had a chain mediating effect between compassion satisfaction and caring ability. CONCLUSIONS: Higher levels of compassion satisfaction had the strongest impact on the caring ability of young psychiatric nurses which could be mediated via burnout and secondary traumatic stress. No patient or public contribution.

ABSTRACT

Background: The implementation of humanistic care is conducive to providing high quality nursing, improving patient satisfaction and establishing harmonious nursery-patient relationship. Current researchs show that humanistic caring ability is affected by emotional intelligence, empathy, interpersonal communication. But the exact relationship and internal mechanism of such factors have not been fully understood. Objective: To explore the multiple mediating effect of empathy and communication ability on nursing students' emotional intelligence and caring ability. Methods: A case study was conducted by examining a sample of 1,165 nursing students from a junior college in Anhui, China. The multidimensional scales, and a self-designed demographic characteristics questionnaire were utilized. Path relationships and mutual effects were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). Results: Emotional intelligence, empathy, and communication ability were found to positively affect nursing students' caring ability, as well as positive interrelationships with one another (standardized estimate = 0.312-0.584, p < 0.001). Communication ability and empathy play an important role in mediating the association between emotional intelligence and caring ability, and the effect sizes are 0.169 and 0.121, respectively, while the effect value of empathy and communication ability in emotional intelligence and caring ability was 0.034, which showed partial mediation of the association. The indirect effect of the structural equation was 77.14%. Conclusion: The chain mediating role of empathy and communication ability in emotional intelligence and caring ability is explored, which not only enrichis previous studies, but also reveals the mechanism of emotional intelligence's influence on caring ability. It is essential to continuously improve nursing students' caring ability. From the perspective of nursing educators, they need to develop targeted approaches to help the nursing student improve their emotional intelligence, empathy, and communication skills, further enhancing their caring ability.

ABSTRACT

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an incurable digestive disease. Since patients have to live with it, improving patients' quality of life is important. Caregiver's positive feelings and closeness may have a positive effect on patients' quality of life. We hypothesized that caregiver's positive feeling affected patient's quality of life through caregiver's caring ability, and closeness might be the upstream of this chain. In this study, we conducted a single-center cross-sectional survey by questionnaire in China to tested the hypothesis. A total of 181 patient-caregiver pairs were included. The short version of the IBD questionnaire (SIBDQ), the twelve-item short-form health survey (SF-12), the positive aspects of caregiving (PAC) and Capacity Scale of caregivers were used to collect data. All the data were collected in one interview. Spearman correlation and Bootstrap method were used to analyze the data. Mediation analysis results indicated that caregiver's caring ability mediated the association between caregiver's positive feelings and patients' quality of life (p < 0.01), which explained 34.1% of the total variation of patients' quality of life. Mediation analysis results also revealed that patient-evaluated or caregiver-evaluated closeness had a positive effect on patients' quality of life through caregiver's positive feeling and caregiver's caring ability (p < 0.05), which explained 2.1 and 2.3% of the variation of patients' quality of life. Caregiver's positive feelings were related to caregivers' quality of life (p < 0.01), but there was no significant association between caregivers' ability and caregivers' quality of life. In summary, our model revealed that caregiver's positive feeling affected patients' quality of life through caregiver's caring ability.

ABSTRACT

Caring ability and professional values developed and shaped during nursing university studies are often recognised as fundamental components of education and professional nursing attitudes. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between caring ability and professional values among nursing students and their correlation with selected sociodemographic variables. A cross-sectional study was conducted among a convenience sample of 379 nursing students. During the research, the Polish versions of the Caring Ability Inventory and the Professional Values Scale were used. The overall result in the Professional Values Scale was 108.78 (SD = 16.17)-which is considered average, and in the Caring Ability Inventory 189.55 (SD = 18.77)-which is considered low. Age correlated negatively with the professional values of students in total and in the subscale "care"; in contrast, "gender", "place of residence" and "financial situation" did not show any correlation with the level of students' professional values and caring ability. The professional values and caring abilities of nursing students depended on the year and mode of study and the type of university. The results of the study revealed that the caring ability and professional values of nursing students undergo changes during their education.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Caring ability is the core ability of nursing. Here we explored the factors affecting the caring ability of undergraduate nursing students. Self-awareness and communication ability are potential variables to improve caring ability. OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between self-awareness, communication ability and caring ability of domestic undergraduate nursing students and to explore whether communication ability has an intermediary effect between self-awareness and caring ability. DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Undergraduate nursing students (n = 1411) who attended Dalian Medical University, Liaoning, China. Participants were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling methods using online platforms. METHODS: The questionnaire used the Self-Consciousness Scale, Clinical Communication Competence Evaluation Scale and Caring Ability Inventory. The data were processed and analyzed by SPSS 24.0 and Amos 23.0. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were performed for data analysis. RESULTS: There was a significant positive correlation between undergraduate nursing students' caring ability and their self-awareness and communication ability (p < 0.001). Communication ability played a partial mediating role between self-awareness and caring ability (p < 0.001), and the mediating effect was 34.2 %. CONCLUSIONS: The self-awareness of undergraduate nursing students directly affects their caring ability and can also indirectly affect their caring ability through their communication ability. Educators can guide and cultivate student self-awareness and communication ability and promote self-regulation, so as to improve students' caring ability and improve clinical development.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nursing students' internship experiences may significantly impact their caring ability. However, there is a lack of comprehensive evaluation of undergraduate nursing students' caring ability pre-and post-internship in China. This study aimed to explore the differences in the caring ability of undergraduate nursing students before and after internship. METHODS: The sample comprised 305 undergraduate nursing students who had undergone internships during 2018-2020 in three hospitals in Changsha, China. Caring Ability Inventory was used to measure and compare nursing students' caring ability before and after internship. Descriptive statistics and paired t-test were employed to analyze data in SPSS software (version 22.0). RESULTS: A total of 300 students completed the survey (response rate = 98.37%). The overall score of caring ability and scores of cognitive and patience dimensions were higher after internship than before internship (P < 0.05). There was no significant improvement in the courage dimension (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Caring ability of undergraduate nursing students in China was at a low level, their overall caring ability significantly improved after the internship, indicating a positive relationship between internship and caring ability. Nursing educators and clinical nurses should emphasize the importance of caring ability development in internship planning and encourage nursing students to engage more with patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Research regarding humanistic caring has proliferated to enable person-centred and holistic care. Empirical evidence investigating the humanistic caring ability is largely derived from studies recruiting general nursing students. Midwifery students, however, remain underrepresented. OBJECTIVES: To assess the humanistic caring ability of midwifery students in China and investigate its associated factors. DESIGN: A multi-centre cross-sectional descriptive study. SETTINGS: Five medical colleges spreading across Eastern, Central and Southern China. PARTICIPANTS: Secondary vocational, higher vocational and undergraduate midwifery students (N = 303). METHODS: The Caring Ability Inventory (CAI), the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy for Nursing Students (JSPE-NS), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Professional Identity Scale for Nursing Students (PISNS) were used to measure humanistic caring ability, empathy, resilience and professional identity, respectively. Stepwise multiple linear regression was used to explore associated factors. RESULTS: The midwifery students' total mean CAI score was 184.63 ± 19.88. In the multiple linear regression analysis, empathy (ß = 0.394, p < 0.001), resilience (ß = 0.233, p < 0.001) and professional identity (ß = 0.161, p = 0.002) were positively associated with the humanistic caring ability of midwifery students. The humanistic caring ability was also influenced by educationl level, perceived concern from peers and recognition of caring ability as a prerequisite for midwifery profession. CONCLUSIONS: Midwifery students in China have poor humanistic caring ability, which needs to be further improved. Interventions that cultivate the empathy, resilience and professional identity have the potential to advance the humanistic caring ability of midwifery students. Promoting a supportive and caring atmosphere among peers is also important.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Caring is an essential component of professional nursing practice, which directly affects the quality of patient care. Nurses' caring ability may not meet patients' demands for high-quality care. There are challenges in designing and implementing interventions to improve nurses' caring ability, especially in China. Understanding Chinese nurses' caring ability and related influential factors serves as the basis for effective interventions to improve their ability to care for patients. AIM: To describe the caring ability of nurses and its potential predictors in China. METHODS: From January to February 2018, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2304 Registered Nurses working at different levels of hospitals across 29 provinces in China. The structured online survey included socio-demographic information, Caring Ability Inventory, Caring Efficacy Scale and Professional Quality of Life. Descriptive statistics, univariate analyses and multivariate analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Overall caring ability and its three dimensions of the participants were all significantly lower than the Nkongho' norm, an international scoring standard of nurse's caring ability. Age, employment type, workplace, caring efficacy, compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress were predictors of knowing, explaining 41.8% of the variance. Predictors of courage were educational level, bereavement experience, caring efficacy, compassion satisfaction and burnout (31.7% of the variance). Educational level, workplace, exposure to critically ill patients, caring efficacy, compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress were influencing factors of patience, accounting for 19.5% of the variance. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese nurses' caring ability, with patience, knowing, and courage in descending order. Particular attention needs to be paid to the courage dimension of the nurses' caring ability. Further, the predictors of overall caring ability and each dimension were diverse. These results indicate that nurse educators and administrators need to identify training priorities and design targeted interventions based on the influencing factors.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Interprofessional collaboration in the training of nursing and psychology students helps provide students of both disciplines with the ability and competences they need to best attend to their patients. This study implemented and analyzed a method for developing the competences of each discipline in a scenario of joint clinical simulation that incorporates mental and physical health simultaneously, and measured the caring ability of the participating students. METHODS: Participants took a self-applied survey measuring their own caring ability. After, a clinical simulation was performed where nursing students performed clinical interviews on psychology students, who acted as standardized patients. Caring abilities were measured in the nursing students, and the psychology students implemented an intervention service measuring caring ability and brief - debrief simulation by coaching to nursing students. RESULTS: The results indicated that the self-applied questionnaire of caring ability resulted in scores significantly higher than what was measured by observers. CONCLUSIONS: The results contribute to the development of protocols, training and collaborative work practices in interprofessional education, which allow the scaling of these competences.

ABSTRACT

AIM: Family caregivers have limited abilities that make them vulnerable to the care needs of patients. Therefore, it seems necessary to evaluate their caring ability. The aim of this study was to design an instrument for assessing the caring ability of family caregivers of cancer patients. METHODS: This was a sequential exploratory mixed-method study, carried out in two qualitative and quantitative phases. The concept of caring ability and its dimensions were explained using conventional content analysis in the qualitative phase. The research participants included 41 family caregivers of cancer patients and professional caregivers who were selected using purposeful sampling method until reaching data saturation. The scale items were designed using the results of the qualitative phase of the study, as well as the review of relevant literature. In the quantitative phase, the scale was validated using content and face validity, construct validity, as well as internal consistency and stability. RESULTS: The primary item pool was prepared in 108 items. Content validity was determined using CVR with a cut-off point (0.62), CVI with a cut-off point (0.8) and kappa coefficient (κ) (>0.75). The validity of 72 items was confirmed. Then, the overlapping items were merged and eventually the 45-item scale entered the face validity stage and five items with an impact factor < 1.5 were omitted. Results of KMO = 0.904 and Bartlett = 6184.012 (p < 0.001) justified the need for factor analysis. Scree plot indicates five factors with eigenvalues above 1 and 67.7% of the total variance, including 'Effective role play, Fatigue and Surrender, Trust, Uncertainty, and Caring ignorance'. Reliability of the 31-item instrument indicated a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.93 and ICC of 0.94. CONCLUSIONS: Caring abilities scale (CAI) of family caregivers of patients with cancer is a valid and reliable instrument that can assess caregivers' caring ability.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To construct and test a hypothetical model linking the caring ability of nursing students with empathy ability, emotional intelligence, and communication ability. METHOD: Participants were 851 students from three undergraduate colleges and one junior college in China, Gansu Province. Participating students had to fulfill the following requirements: different levels of nursing majors (undergraduates or junior college students), understand the study purpose, and be willing to participate in this study. Exclusion: secondary college students. Variables were measured by the Caring Ability Inventory, Emotional Intelligence Scale, Supportive Communicative Scale, and Interpersonal Reactivity Index. Data were analyzed with structural equation modeling to explore the path relationships and mutual effects between structural elements. RESULTS: Empathy (ß = 0.25, P<0.001), emotional intelligence (ß = 0.36, P<0.001), and communication ability (ß = 0.28, P<0.001) were significantly associated with the caring ability of nursing students. Empathy was the strongest factor associated with caring ability and emotional intelligence was a partial mediator of the relationship between empathy and communication skills. CONCLUSIONS: The nurse's humanistic care ability requires continuous learning and school education. To enhance the humanistic care ability of nursing students, nursing educators should develop target strategies to improve the 'sympathetic ability,' 'emotional intelligence' and 'communication ability' of nursing students.
