ABSTRACT

A system for analysis of histopathology data within a pharmaceutical R&D environment has been developed with the intention of enabling interdisciplinary collaboration. State-of-the-art AI tools have been deployed as easy-to-use self-service modules within an open-source whole slide image viewing platform, so that non-data scientist users (e.g., clinicians) can utilize and evaluate pre-trained algorithms and retrieve quantitative results. The outputs of analysis are automatically cataloged in the database to track data provenance and can be viewed interactively on the slide as annotations or heatmaps. Commonly used models for analysis of whole slide images including segmentation, extraction of hand-engineered features for segmented regions, and slide-level classification using multi-instance learning are included and new models can be added as needed. The source code that supports running inference with these models internally is backed up by a robust CI/CD pipeline to ensure model versioning, robust testing, and seamless deployment of the latest models. Examples of the use of this system in a pharmaceutical development workflow include glomeruli segmentation, enumeration of podocyte count from WT-1 immuno-histochemistry, measurement of beta-1 integrin target engagement from immunofluorescence, digital glomerular phenotyping from periodic acid-Schiff histology, PD-L1 score prediction using multi-instance learning, and the deployment of the open-source Segment Anything model to speed up annotation.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The conservation and authentication of pictorial artworks is considered an important part of the preservation of cultural heritage. The use of non-destructive testing allows the obtention of accurate information about the state of pictorial artworks without direct contact between the equipment used and the sample. In particular, the use of this kind of technology is recommended in obtaining three-dimensional surface digital models, as it provides high-resolution information that constitutes a kind of fingerprint of the samples. In the case of pictorial artworks with some kind of surface relief, one of the most useful technologies is structured light (SL). In this paper, the minimum difference in height that can be distinguished with this technology was estimated, establishing experimentally both the error committed in the measurement process and the precision in the use of this technology. This study focused on the case of oil paintings on canvas and developed a low-cost system to ensure its wide use.

ABSTRACT

A new species, Cobbia bengalensis sp. nov., of free-living marine nematodes is described from an island of Sundarban, Indian coast and compared with other eight valid species of the genus. Cobbia bengalensis sp. nov. is characterized and differentiated from the others by a unique combination of sexually dimorphic tail, arrangement of anterior sensilla, amphid position, presence of four subcephalic sensilla at the level of amphid, buccal cavity with one dorsal and two subventral teeth, elongated cardia and the shape of gubernaculum. Some previously recorded taxa thought to be the species of Cobbia has also been discussed. Wrongly recorded data for nematofaunal inventory from Indian water has also been criticized.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a new application of photogrammetric techniques for protecting cultural heritage. The accuracy of the method and the fact that it can be used to carry out different tests without contact between the sample and the instruments can make this technique very useful for authenticating and cataloging artworks. The application focuses on the field of pictorial artworks, and wooden panel paintings in particular. In these works, the orography formed by the brushstrokes can be easily digitalized using a photogrammetric technique, called Structured Light System, with submillimeter accuracy. Thus, some of the physical characteristics of the brushstrokes, like minimum and maximum heights or slopes become a fingerprint of the painting. We explain in detail the general principles of the Structured Light System Technique and the specific characteristics of the commercial set-up used in this work. Some experiments are carried out on a sample painted by us to check the accuracy limits of the technique and to propose some tests that can help to stablish a methodology for authentication purposes. Finally, some preliminary results obtained on a real pictorial artwork are presented, providing geometrical information of its metric features as an example of the possibilities of this application.

ABSTRACT

Snake venoms are cocktails of protein toxins that play important roles in capture and digestion of prey. Significant qualitative and quantitative variation in snake venom composition has been observed among and within species. Understanding these variations in protein components is instrumental in interpreting clinical symptoms during human envenomation and in searching for novel venom proteins with potential therapeutic applications. In the last decade, transcriptomic analyses of venom glands have helped in understanding the composition of various snake venoms in great detail. Here we review transcriptomic analysis as a powerful tool for understanding venom profile, variation and evolution.

ABSTRACT

Due to the failure of using adequately the thesaurus «Descriptores en Ciencias de la Salud (DeCS)» in the assignment of epigraphs during the cataloging process, a number of technical instructions are drawn. These instructions enable the librarians from the National System of Medical Sciences Information to use it as a dictionary of epigraphs because most of them do not have automatic systems for the processing of information so that they support themselves in the search and recovery procedures on the cataloging index card. The subject representation of documents through epigraphs and its basic principles are discussed as well as the rules for the coordination of epigraphs and subepigraphs and the restrictions in using some of the types of subheadings. The implementation of the annex Práctica catalográfica en el DeCS, based upon the Cataloging Practices of MeSH is recommended as a strategy to eliminate the contradictions generated by the lack of appropiate dispositions to represent all the aspects discussed in the documents and submitted to the assignment of epigraphs and subepigraphs.
