ABSTRACT

Addressing the intraspecific variability of functional traits helps understand how climate change might influence the distribution of organismal traits across environments, but this is notably understudied in the Amazon, especially for plant hydraulic traits commonly used to project drought responses. We quantified the intraspecific trait variability of leaf mass per area, wood density, and xylem embolism resistance for two dominant central Amazonian tree species, along gradients of water and light availability, while accounting for tree age and height. Intraspecific variability in hydraulic traits was high, with within-species variability comparable to the whole-community variation. Hydraulic trait variation was modulated mostly by the hydrological environment, with higher embolism resistance of trees growing on deep-water-table plateaus compared with shallow-water-table valleys. Intraspecific variability of leaf mass per area and wood density was mostly modulated by intrinsic factors and light. The different environmental and intrinsic drivers of variation among and within individuals lead to an uncoupled coordination among carbon acquisition/conservation and water-use traits. Our findings suggest multivariate ecological strategies driving tropical tree distributions even within species, and reflect differential within-population sensitivities along environmental gradients. Therefore, intraspecific trait variability must be considered for accurate predictions of the responses of tropical forests to climate change.

ABSTRACT

Functional traits have been examined to explain the growth rates of forest communities in different sites. However, weak or nonexistent relations are often found, especially due to the following methodological aspects: 1) lack of an environmental context (e.g., light, water, or nutrient supply), 2) use of nonfunctional traits, 3) an approach that does not contemplate phenotypic integration, and 4) neglect of intraspecific variation.Here we measured relative growth rates, crown, and leaf traits in saplings of six tropical tree species growing in two light environments (Gap and Understory) to test whether contrasting light environments modulates trait-trait and trait-growth relationships. Moreover, we tested whether models that integrate traits of different dimensions of the plant (crown and leaf) improve the strength of trait-growth relations.Light availability changed both trait-trait and trait-growth relationships. Overall, in Understory, crown traits (crown length and total leaf area) have a stronger effect on growth rates, while physiological traits related to nutrient acquisition (nitrogen concentration), photochemical efficiency (chlorophyll pigments and chlorophyll a fluorescence), and biochemical efficiency (potassium use efficiency) are strong in Gap. Models including multiple traits explained growth rates better in Gap (up to 62%) and Understory (up to 47%), but just in Gap the best model comprises traits that are representative of different dimensions of the plant. Synthesis. We advanced the knowledge behind the light effects on tree sapling by posit that trait-trait and trait-growth relationships vary across light environments. Therefore, light availability is a key environmental factor to be considered when choosing the set of traits to be measured in functional approach studies using tropical tree saplings. In compliance with the phenotype integration hypothesis, functional traits are better predictors of growth rates when grouped in a set of traits of different dimensions of the plant that represent different functional mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to establish background concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils from the Carajás Mineral Province (CMP), southeastern Amazonian Craton. The PTEs Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, V, and Zn were digested in microwaves and quantified by optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). The variability of physical-chemical and mineralogical attributes contributed to variation in PTE concentrations. High background concentrations of Al, Fe, Cr, Mn, Mo, Ni, Ti, and V and, in particular, the PTE concentrations of Cd, Cu, Cr, Ba, and Co were greater than the prevention values defined by the Brazilian National Council of Environment. Soil quality reference values (QRVs) were greater than those determined for most Brazilian states and soils in the state of Pará. The high background concentrations and QRVs of PTEs show that the region is strongly influenced by the source material, rich in ferruginous deposits and other associated minerals. The results are an important tool for establishing soil quality standards and public policies for environmental protection in regions naturally PTE enriched.

The increases in CO2 concentrations and, consequently, temperature due to climate change are predicted to intensify. Understanding the physiological responses of Pyrrhulina aff. brevis to the climatic scenarios proposed by the IPCC (2014) for the next 100 years is of fundamental importance to determine its susceptibility. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the predicted climatic scenarios for the year 2100 on the metabolic adjustments of P. aff. brevis . Specifically, the rate of oxygen uptake, electron transport system capacity, glycogen and lactate content and the role of Na+K+-ATPases and H+-ATPase were evaluated. P. aff. brevis individuals were exposed for 15 days to the simulated climatic scenarios in climate scenario rooms, where temperature and CO2 in the air were controlled. Two rooms were used to simulate the climatic scenarios predicted by the IPCC (2014): moderate (RCP 6; 2.5 °C and 400 µatm CO2 above current levels) and extreme (RCP 8.5; 4.5 °C and 900 µatm CO2 above current levels), in addition to the "control room" that represents the current scenario. There was an increase in the metabolic rate (MO2) in the animals acclimated to the climate change scenarios (RCP 6 and RCP 8.5) compared to the current scenario. These responses showed a typical effect of temperature on energy demand in relation to the increase in temperature and CO2. Our data showed an increase in O2 consumption (MO2), lactate levels and H+-ATPase activity of the animals acclimated to the moderate and extreme climate change scenarios. Such adjustments presented a clear metabolic imbalance, an alteration that may imply challenges for survival, growth, distribution and reproduction in the face of the expected environmental changes for the year 2100.

ABSTRACT

Riparian areas around streams are those areas in which biological communites are directly influenced by the stream. The size of protected riparian areas and their conservation has become a controversial topic after changes implemented in the Brazilian Forest Code (BFC): a set of laws that regulates the size of Permanent Protection Areas (PPA). Here, we investigate the influence of distance from water bodies on bat-species and guild composition in a lowland Amazonian rainforest. Our hypotheses were that bat assemblages would change depending on the distance to the water body and that the abundance of herbivorous bats (frugivorous and nectarivorous) would be greater in areas close to water. Bats were captured with mist-nets in 24 riparian and 25 non-riparian plots within a trail grid in an old-growth terra-firme forest, northeast of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Each plot was sampled three times in a total of 7056 net-hours. We captured 1191 bats, comprising 51 species. We used model selection based on AIC (Akaike Information Criterion) to compare linear and piecewise regressions to estimate the ecological thresholds for different bat assemblages. Piecewise models with one breakpoint were more parsimonious than linear models for abundance data, and the species and guild composition of animalivorous and frugivorous bats. Animalivorous-bat abundance increased from the stream to about 181 m, and frugivorous-bat abundance decreased within 50 m of the stream. The patterns of guild abundance suggest that frugivorous bats may need greater access to streams than animalivorous bats. The most conservative model suggests that most of the variation in bat composition occurs close to the stream and extends to up 114 m from the banks. Therefore, the 30 m wide strip of riparian forest protected by Brazilian law would maintain a relatively small fraction of bat-species assemblages in Ducke Reserve, and is insufficient to represent most of the assemblage-composition variation within the riparian zone. The suggestion to reduce the width of the protected riparian zone from 30 to 15 m for streams smaller than 10 m wide, as is under discussion, would likely be prejudicial for bat assemblages.

ABSTRACT

Characiformes is an order of freshwater fishes that includes many commercially important and emblematic species from South America and Africa, such as the popular piranhas, hatchetfishes, African tiger fishes and tetras. The order is split into two suborders with a total of 24 families, 282 genera and ca. 2,100 species. Here, we present an expanded phylogeny of characiform fishes, including data for 520 species and three genes (12S, 16S and RAG1), and the recently described family Tarumaniidae, which has not been examined by previous molecular analysis. Although our genetic coverage is limited to three gene fragments, the tree inferred based on maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference supports the monophyly of all characiform families and is largely congruent with results from recent studies that sampled less taxa but more genes. Also in agreement with a morphological hypothesis, our results strongly support the sister-group relationships between the family Tarumaniidae and Erythrinidae. Based on our results and that of the other molecular analyses, we propose a revised circumscription of the superfamily Erythrinoidea to include the families Tarumaniidae and Erythrinidae only.(AU)


Characiformes es un orden de peces de agua dulce que incluye un gran numero de especies emblemáticas y de importancia comercial en Sur América y África como lo son las populares pirañas, los peces voladores, los peces tigre de África y los tetras. El orden se divide en dos subórdenes con un total de 24 familias, 282 géneros y cerca de 2100 especies. Aquí, presentamos una filogenia expandida de Characiformes, que incluye datos de 520 especies, tres genes (12S, 16S y RAG1) y la recientemente descrita familia Tarumaniidae, la cual no ha sido examinada en previos análisis moleculares. Aunque nuestra cobertura genética esta limitada a tres genes, el árbol inferido basado en máxima verosimilitud e inferencia bayesiana apoya la monófila de todas las familias de Characiformes y es en gran medida congruente con los resultados de estudios recientes que examinaron menos especies pero más genes. También de acuerdo con una hipótesis morfológica, nuestros resultados apoyan firmemente las relaciones de grupos hermanos entre las familias Tarumaniidae y Erythrinidae. Con base en nuestros resultados y el de otros estudios moleculares, proponemos una circunscripción revisada de la superfamilia Erythrinoidea que incluye solo a las familias Tarumaniidae y Erythrinidae.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Among Opiliones, the family Samoidae Sørensen, 1886 is a group of small Laniatores with a wide tropical distribution. Neotropical samoids are distributed mainly in the Caribbean subregion, with species recorded from insular localities and the Venezuelan coastal range. Previously, for continental South America only three genera and just a few specimens of unidentified Samoidae have been recorded from Brazil. In this paper we describe Maracaynatum isadorae sp. nov., the first record of the genus for Brazil and the first samoid described for the Amazon biome. We also provide an emended diagnosis for the genus and a map with its distribution.

Abstract This paper examines water properties from lakes, (depression lakes, sensu Junk et al., 2012), channels (scroll lakes with high connectivity, sensu Junk et al., 2012) and paleo-channels (scroll lakes with low connectivity-sensu Junk et al., 2012, locally called ressacas) located in Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, in Central Amazon floodplain, Amazonas, Brazil. We analysed surface temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, transparency, suspended inorganic and organic matter, chlorophyll-a, pheophytin, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, organic and inorganic carbon in 2009 high water phase, 2009 and 2010 low water phases. Multivariate statistical analyses of 24 aquatic systems (6 ressacas, 12 lakes and 6 channels, 142 samples) were applied to the variables in order to: 1) quantify differences among aquatic system types; 2) assess how those differences are affected in the different phases of the hydrological year. First, we analysed the entire set of variables to test for differences among phases of the hydrological year and types of aquatic systems using a PERMANOVA two-way crossed design. The results showed that the all measured limnological variables are distinct regarding both factors: types of aquatic systems and hydrological phases. In general, the magnitude and amplitude of all variables were higher in the low water phase than in the high water phase, except for water transparency in all aquatic systems types. PERMANOVA showed that the differences between aquatic systems types and hydrological phases of all variables were highly significant for both main factors (type and phase) and for the type x phase interaction. Limnological patterns of Amazon floodplain aquatic systems are highly dynamic, dependent on the surrounding environment, flood pulse, main river input and system type. These patterns show how undisturbed systems respond to natural variability in such a diverse environment, and how distinct are those aquatic systems, especially during the low water phase. Aquatic systems in Mamirauá floodplain represent limnological patterns of almost undisturbed areas and can be used as future reference for comparison with disturbed areas, such as those of the Lower Amazon, and as a baseline for studies on the effects of anthropogenic influences and climate change and on Amazon aquatic ecosystem.

Os sistemas aquáticos da planície de inundação de Mamirauá representam os padrões limnológicos de áreas não perturbadas e podem servir como futura referência para comparação com as propriedades dos sistemas aquáticos de áreas perturbadas, como as do Baixo Amazonas. Podem ser também utilizados como linha de base para estudos dos impactos antropogênicos e das mudanças climáticas sobre os ecossistemas aquáticos Amazônicos.

In the Amazon, aquatic herbaceous are found in all types of water, but its abundance can be influenced by the limnological conditions of each environment. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of habitat conditions on the structure of aquatic herbaceous in the Catalão Lake region, Manaus, AM. We evaluated seven transects in white water environments (AB), nine in decanted water (AD), and seven in mixed water (AM). In each transect, aquatic herbaceous were identified, relative coverage and frequency of occurrence were measured, and turbidity, conductivity, pH and depth variables were evaluated. Variation in depth indicated that the environments of AD and AM were deeper than AB, yet lower conductivity and more acidic waters were recorded in AM. We recorded 32 taxa of aquatic herbaceous, being the most frequent Paspalum repens, Salvinia auriculata, Pistia stratiotes and Lemna valdiviana. Among the species recorded, 50% were common to all three environments. On the other hand, some species occurred exclusively in AB, in AD or AM environments. In AB, floating forms were more frequent, and this environment had the highest coverage; in AD and AM environments, emerged forms showed higher frequency and coverage. AM had greater richness of aquatic herbaceous compared to other environments. Variations recorded indicate that limnological conditions of white and black water rivers can determine the structure of aquatic herbaceous community, even at small spatial scales.


Na Amazônia, as herbáceas aquáticas são encontradas em todas as tipologias de água, mas sua abundância pode ser influenciada pelas condições limnológicas de cada ambiente. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência das condições do habitat sobre a estrutura de herbáceas aquáticas na região do Lago Catalão, Manaus, AM. Foram avaliadas sete transecções em ambientes de água branca (AB), nove em água decantada (AD) e sete em água mista (AM). Em cada transecção foram identificadas as herbáceas aquáticas, estimada a área de cobertura relativa, calculada a frequência de ocorrência e avaliadas as variáveis turbidez, condutividade elétrica, pH e profundidade. A variação na profundidade indicou que os ambientes de AD e AM eram mais profundos do que AB, já águas mais ácidas e com menor condutividade foram registradas na AM. Foram registrados 32 táxons de herbáceas aquáticas sendo as espécies mais frequentes Paspalum repens, Salvinia auriculata, Pistia stratiotes e Lemna valdiviana. Entre as espécies levantadas, 50% foram comuns aos três ambientes. Por outro lado, algumas espécies ocorreram exclusivamente em ambientes de AB, em AD e em AM. Na AB foram mais frequentes as formas flutuantes, que também apresentaram a maior cobertura neste ambiente; na AD e na AM as emersas apresentaram maior frequência e cobertura. A AM apresentou maior riqueza de herbáceas aquáticas em relação aos demais ambientes. As variações registradas indicam que as condições limnológicas dos rios de água branca e preta podem determinar a estrutura da comunidade de herbáceas aquáticas, mesmo em pequenas escalas espaciais.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of spatial variation in river channels and habitats on the distribution of fish communities in the headwater streams of the Jaú River System, a blackwater tributary of the Negro River. Collections and measurements were made in 34 headwater streams during the period of November- December, 1998. Fish were captured with fish traps and hand nets along standard reaches of two meanders. Data on benthic habitat structure, stream depth and width were collected along lateral transects in each sample reach. A total of 66 fish species from 24 families were collected and classified into seven trophic guilds: allocthonous insectivore, autochthonous insectivore, general insectivore, piscivore, detritivorous planktivore, detritivorous insectivore and insectivorous piscivore. Variations in the distribution and diversity of bottom substrates were important factors influencing fish community structures in these systems. Also, variation in stream size explained the observed variability in fish communities.


O objetivo desse estudo foi investigar a influência da variação espacial de características físicas do canal dos igarapés e habitats na distribuição das comunidades de peixes em igarapés de cabeceira no sistema do rio Jaú. O rio Jaú é um tributário de águas pretas do rio Negro. Coletas e medidas foram realizadas em 34 igarapés de cabeceira durante os períodos de novembro a dezembro de 1998. Os peixes foram capturados com armadilhas e puçás ao longo de dois meandros em cada local. Um total de 66 espécies de peixes de 24 famílias foram coletados e classificados em sete guildas tróficas: insetívoro alóctone, insetívoro autóctone, insetívoro em geral, piscívoro, detritívoro algívoro, detritívoro insetívoro e insetívoro piscívoro. ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of spatial variation in river channels and habitats on the distribution of fish communities in the headwater streams of the Jaú River System, a blackwater tributary of the Negro River. Collections and measurements were made in 34 headwater streams during the period of November- December, 1998. Fish were captured with fish traps and hand nets along standard reaches of two meanders. Data on benthic habitat structure, stream depth and width were collected along lateral transects in each sample reach. A total of 66 fish species from 24 families were collected and classified into seven trophic guilds: allocthonous insectivore, autochthonous insectivore, general insectivore, piscivore, detritivorous planktivore, detritivorous insectivore and insectivorous piscivore. Variations in the distribution and diversity of bottom substrates were important factors influencing fish community structures in these systems. Also, variation in stream size explained the observed variability in fish communities.

ABSTRACT

Achatina fulica or "giant African snail" is an exotic species, considered to be one of the world's hundred most invasive species, causing serious environmental damages. In the present study we report, for the first time, the occurrence of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infecting A.fulica in the Amazon region. This nematode is described parasitizing mainly the pulmonary system of felines, which causes "aelurostrongilose", also known as feline cardio-pulmonary strongyloidosis. New morphometric data of third stage larvae are presented herein. The present study demonstrated that 40 percent of all the snails were infected by A. abstrusus. Achatina fulica specimens were collected from three different areas in Manaus namely: rural; east and west areas. The east area presents the highest prevalence of 80 percent. The large number of A.fulica found in inhabited areas increases the chances of emergent zoonoses, which highlights the need of further studies so as to better control this disease.


Achatina fulica ou "caramujo africano" é uma espécie exótica, considerada uma das cem piores espécies invasoras do mundo, causando sérios danos ambientais. No presente estudo foi registrado, pela primeira vez, a ocorrência do Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infectando o A.fulica na região amazônica. Esse nematóide é descrito parasitando principalmente o sistema pulmonar de felinos, causando a "aelurostrongilose", também conhecida como estrongiloidose cardio-pulmonar felina. Novos dados morfométricos de larvas de terceiro estágio são apresentados. Dos 45 caramujos coletados, 40 por cento estavam infectados por larvas de A. abstrusus. Especimens de Achatina fulica foram coletados em três áreas da cidade de Manaus: rural, leste e oeste. A zona leste apresentou a maior prevalência de 80 por cento. O grande número de A.fulica encontrado em áreas habitadas aumenta as chances de ocorrência de zoonoses emergentes e destaca a necessidade de mais estudos para o melhor controle da doença.

ABSTRACT

The use of plants for the phytoremediation of contaminated soils requires that the concentrations of the pollutant lay within the limits of tolerance of the plant in order to ensure the efficacy of the treatment. The vegetative propagation and growth of the aquatic herbaceous plant Echinochloa polystachya were studied by planting parts of stems in 2 L of várzea soils previously contaminated by crude oil from Urucu, in 7 different dosages of oil ranging from 0 to 0.46 L m-2. The experiment took place in a green house and the plants were monitored during a 70 days period. Increasing the oil concentration lead to the decrease of the above-ground biomass, the ratio alive aerial biomass/total aerial biomass, leaf length and number of leaves. The interaction between dosage and time of exposition contributed for a reduction in the number and length of leaves, height of insertion of the first leaf, and increase of the number of unhealthy leaves. The use of E. polystachya for phytoremediation may be limited to soils with lower concentrations of crude oil from Urucu.


A utilização de plantas para fitorremediação do solo requer que a concentração do poluente esteja dentro dos limites de tolerância da planta para que o tratamento seja eficaz. O rebrotamento e crescimento da herbácea aquática Echinochloa polystachya em solo de várzea contaminado por petróleo de Urucu foram estudados por meio do plantio de propágulos em frascos com 2 L de solo contaminado pela mistura de 7 dosagens de petróleo, distribuídas entre 0 e 0,46 L m-2. O experimento foi realizado em Casa de Vegetação e as plantas foram monitoradas durante 70 dias. Em resposta ao aumento da dosagem do petróleo, houve diminuição da biomassa aérea, da proporção de biomassa aérea viva/aérea total, do comprimento da folha e do número de folhas. A interação entre dosagem e tempo de exposição levou à diminuição do número de folhas, comprimento da folha, altura de inserção da primeira folha e aumento do número de folhas com comprometimento fitossanitário. A utilização de E. polystachya para fitorremediação pode estar limitada a solos com baixas dosagens de petróleo de Urucu.

ABSTRACT

Estudos fenológicos de longa duração em florestas tropicais são raros. Foi realizado o acompanhamento fenológico de Dipteryx odorata, no período de 1974 à 2000, em duas áreas de floresta amazônica: a Reserva Florestal Ducke (RFD) e Estação Experimental de Silvicultura Tropical (EEST). O objetivo foi observar os padrões fenológicos nas duas áreas, verificar a regularidade da floração e frutificação num período de 27 anos e a influência dos fatores climáticos nestes eventos. Foram marcados cinco indivíduos na RFD e cinco na EEST e observados quanto à produção de flores, frutos imaturos e maduros. A floração e a produção de frutos imaturos apresentaram padrão irregular nas duas áreas observadas, variando quanto a época de ocorrência e a duração entre anos e estações, mas apresentaram freqüência de ocorrência similar nos 27 anos observados. Para a fenofase frutos maduros este padrão foi diferente, com intervalos de até três anos sem ocorrência de frutos maduros, na RFD e de sete anos na EEST. Conclui-se que a freqüência de ocorrência das fenofases de floração e frutos imaturos foi anual e a de frutos maduros supra-anual, todas com padrão irregular e duração de intermediária a prolongada. Ocorreu variação de um a três anos entre episódios de floração e frutos imaturos e de um a sete anos entre episódios de frutos maduros, não ficando evidente, nesta análise, a influência dos fatores climáticos nos padrões observados. Sugere-se o uso racional dos produtos derivados de Dipteryx odorata, o cumaru, especialmente quanto à exploração de seus frutos e o desenvolvimento de mais estudos de longa duração, fundamentais para entender os padrões fenológicos reprodutivos e de oferta de recursos em florestas tropicais.


Long term phenological studies in tropical forests are scarce. A phenological study of Dipteryx odorata was carried out from 1974 to 2000 in two areas of Amazon Forest: Reserva Florestal Ducke (RFD) and Estação Experimental de Silvicultura Tropical (EEST). The objective was to compare the phenological patterns between the two areas, to verify the regularity of flowering and fruiting over a period of 27 years, and to verify the influence of climatic factors in these events. Five trees were marked in the RFD and five in the EEST; and were observed monthly for the presence of flowers, unripe and ripe fruits. The flowering and unripe fruiting presented an irregular pattern in both areas, and also varied with regard to duration and period of occurrence between years and seasons. Nevertheless, they presented similar frequency of occurrence during the 27 years of observation. On the other hand, the production of ripe fruits presented a different pattern, with three year intervals without ripe fruits in the RFD, and seven year intervals in the EEST. We concluded that the frequency of flowering and unripe fruiting was annual, and the frequency of occurrence of ripe fruiting was supra-annual, with an irregular pattern, and a duration from intermediate to extended. We also observed the occurrence of one to three year intervals between flowering and unripe fruiting episodes, and one to seven year intervals between episodes with ripe fruiting. The influence of climatic factors in the patterns observed was not clear. We suggest the rational use of natural products extracted from Dipteryx odorata, the "cumaru", especially the fruits, and the development of more long term studies, fundamental for understanding the reproductive phenological patterns as well as the resource offering patterns in tropical forests.

ABSTRACT

Este trabalho objetiva avaliar a composição florística e a fitossociologia de espécies arbóreas do parque fenológico da Embrapa Amazônia Ocidental no Distrito Agropecuário da Suframa (DAS), Manaus-AM, a fim de subsidiar seleções futuras de árvores matrizes visando estudos fenológicos e a implantação de áreas de coleta de sementes. Foram alocadas aleatoriamente 20 parcelas de 10m x 50 m ao longo de um transecto, amostrando-se todos os indivíduos com diâmetro a 1,30 m do solo, (DAP) ≥ 20,0 cm. Foram registrados 240 indivíduos, distribuídos em 100 espécies, 70 gêneros e 29 famílias. As famílias de maior importância ecológica são, em ordem decrescente, Lecythidaceae, Sapotaceae, Mimosaceae, Caesalpiniaceae, Chrysobalanaceae, Fabaceae, Humiriaceae, Moraceae, Vochysiaceae e Apocynaceae. Essas famílias contribuem com 67 por cento da riqueza local de espécies e com 75,8 por cento do número de indivíduos, sugerindo que a diversidade vegetal da área está concentrada em poucas famílias. A família Lecythidaceae possui os maiores valores de dap e número de indivíduos, sendo Sapotaceae a que possui a maior riqueza de espécies na área. As espécies mais importantes, segundo o Índice de Valor de Importância-IVI, são Eschweilera coriacea (DC) S.A. Mori; Qualea paraensis Ducke; Vantanea macrocarpa Ducke; Eschweilera atropetiolata< S.A. Mori; Couratari stellata A.C. Sm.; Lecythis usidata Miers; Eperua duckeana R.S. Cowan; Eschweilera amazonica R. Knuth e Chrysophyllum manaosense (Aubr.) T.D. Penn. O valor do índice de diversidade de Shannon de 2,71, aparentemente baixo, deve ser interpretado com cuidado ao se avaliar a diversidade do parque fenológico, uma vez que o diâmetro mínimo de 20,0 cm adotado neste trabalho pode ter restringido a identificação de um maior número de espécies. This research was carried out to study the floristic composition and phytosociology of tree species in the phenological site of Embrapa Western Amazonia, Suframa Agropecuary District-SAD, Manaus-AM, aiming to help future selection of seed trees, for the establishment of seed collecting areas. Twenty plots of 10m x 50m were studied, along a topographic sequence, where trees with a diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥ 20,0cm were inventoried. A total of 240 trees belonging to 29 families, in 70 genera with 100 species were identified. The most important families, in a decreasing order, were: Lecythidaceae, Sapotaceae, Mimosaceae, Caesalpiniaceae, Chrysobalanaceae, Fabaceae, Humiriaceae, Moraceae, Vochysiaceae and Apocynaceae. These families constituted 67 percent of the local species richness and 75,8 percent of the number of individuals, suggesting that diversity is concentrated in a few families. Lecythidaceae had the largest dbh and number of individuals, and Sapotaceae the greatest richness species in the area. The most important species (IVIs) were Eschweilera coriacea (DC.) S.A. Mori; Qualea paraensis Ducke; Vantanea macrocarpa Ducke; Eschweilera atropetiolata S.A. Mori; Couratari stellata A.C. Sm.; Lecythis usidata Miers.; Eperua duckeana R.S. Cowan; Eschweilera amazonica R. Knuth and Chrysophyllum manaosense (Aubr.) T.D. Penn. The Shannon diversity and Sorensen similarity indexes indicated a low diversity and a high dissimilarity floristic among plots in this study for the minimum dbh considered. The diameter of the first class measuring 20cm - 30cm presented the most number of individuals, contributing 45 percent of samples. Above the center class of 55cm of dbh, around 90 percent of species have been represented by only one.

A sazonalidade e periodicidade diurna de vôo de tabanídeos de dossel na Reserva Ducke, Manaus, AM, foram analisadas utilizando-se uma armadilha suspensa instalada a 20 m de altura, conectada a um cilindro de gás carbônico. Realizaram-se coletas quinzenais, com duração de um dia, no período de abril de 2000 a junho de 2001. O material foi retirado da armadilha em intervalos de 2h e acondicionado em tubos plásticos. Coletaram-se 955 indivíduos, correspondendo a trinta espécies. Philipotabanus stigmaticalis (Krõber) (37,9 por cento) ocorreu ao longo do ano, com maior atividade de vôo entre 12:00h e 16:00h. Acanthocera marginalis Walker (16,3 por cento) ocorreu ao longo do ano, sendo mais abundante nos meses menos chuvosos (julho a novembro), com maior atividade no período entre 10:00h e 12:00h. Acanthocera gorayebi Henriques & Rafael (9,0 por cento) foi mais abundante em julho, com maior atividade entre 10:00h e 12:00h. Dichelacera damicornis (Fabricius) (10,9 por cento) ocorreu nos meses de maior precipitação (janeiro, fevereiro e abril), com maior atividade diurna entre 10:00h e 14:00h. Diachlorus podagricus (Fabricius) (6,6 por cento) ocorreu ao longo de todo o ano exceto em fevereiro, mostrando maior atividade entre 10:00h e 14:00h. Os fatores climáticos, quando correlacionados com a riqueza de tabanídeos, somente mostraram correlação com a precipitação; enquanto a abundância dos espécimes foi correlacionada com a umidade e com a precipitação.


The seasonality and diurnal flight activity of tabanids from canopy was studied at Ducke Reserve, in the county of Manaus, Amazonas State, Brazil, using a suspended trap installed at 20 m above the soil, connected to the carbon dioxide gas cylinder. During one day, twice monthly collects of Tabanidae were taken from April 2000 to June 2001. The material was collected from the trap in intervals of 2h and placed in plastic tubes. A total of 955 individuals, corresponding to thirty species were collected. Philipotabanus stigmaticalis (Krõber) (37.9 percent) was caught all over the year and showed higher flight activity between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Acanthocera marginalis Walker (16.3 percent) was more abundant in the less rainy months (July to November) with a higher activity period between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Acanthocera gorayebi Henriques & Rafael (9.0 percent) was more abundant in July with more activity between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Dichelacera damicornis (Fabricius) (10.9 percent) was more abundant in the months of heavier rainfall (January, February and April) and showed higher diurnal activity between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Diachlorus podagricus (Fabricius) (6.6 percent) was caught throughout the year except in February and showed higher activity between 10:00 a.m. and 14:00 p.m. The climatic factors when correlated to the tabanids richness just showed significant correlation with precipitation, while the specimens abundance was correlated to humidity and precipitation.

ABSTRACT

The Amazon forest is being exploited for timber production. The harvest removes trees, used by sand flies as resting sites, and decreases the canopy, used as refuges by some hosts. The present study evaluated the impact of the timber harvest, the abundance of sand flies, and their trypanosomatid infection rates before and after selective logging. The study was accomplished in terra-firme production forest in an area of timber harvest, state of Amazonas, Brazil. Sand fly catches were carried out in three areas: one before and after the timber harvest, and two control areas, a nature preservation area and a previously exploited area. The flies were caught by aspiration on tree trunks. Samples of sand flies were dissected for parasitological examination. In the site that suffered a harvest, a larger number of individuals was caught before the selective extraction of timber, showing significant difference in relation to the number of individuals and their flagellate infection rates after the logging. The other two areas did not show differences among their sand fly populations. This fact is suggestive of a fauna sensitive to the environmental alterations associated with selective logging.

A variação periódica do nível das águas é o principal fator que determina a comunidade de organismos aquáticos presente em rios com planícies alagadas. Muitos estudos na Amazônia são desenvolvidos nas várzeas próximas à cidade de Manaus, mas, comparações entre essas informações são dificultadas pela ausência de padronização na denominação das diferentes etapas do ciclo de cheia-seca. Este trabalho teve como objetivo a identificação e a padronização da nomenclatura das diferentes fases do ciclo hidrológico para possibilitar análises que envolvam resultados de mais de um ano e de mais de um local. Os dados do nível da água do rio Negro, coletados no porto de Manaus foram utilizados para o desenvolvimento da metodologia. São propostos valores da cota do rio Negro para limitar os quatro períodos hidrológicos (enchente, cheia, vazante e seca) e definir a intensidade da cheia e da seca. O número de dias de cada um dos períodos hidrológicos foi obtido e foi estimada a duração para períodos considerados típicos, longos e curtos. Considerando que modificações abióticas e bióticas do meio estão relacionadas com as mudanças no nível da água, a identificação e a padronização da nomenclatura dos períodos hidrológicos mostraram-se extremamente úteis para uma primeira análise de informações biológicas dos organismos da várzea.


Seasonal variations of the water level is the most important factor in determining the community of aquatic organisms present in flooded areas in the Amazon. Many scientific projects developed in this region were and still are being carried out in flooded areas near the city of Manaus; however, data can rarely be compared due to a non-standardized nomenclature used to describe the various phases of the flood pulse. The present paper aims to identify and standardize the terminology used to define a hydrological cycle with the purpose of allowing for the analysis of data from different places and multiple years. Serial data of the Negro River water height taken from the local harbor was considered for the estimations. Values of the water height are proposed in order to define the four hydrological periods (rising, flood, lowing, dry) and the intensity of flood and dry periods. A typical, long and short hydrological period was also defined in number of days based on the duration of each period. Considering that environmental abiotic and biotic modifications are related to water level fluctuation, the standardization of the hydrological nomenclature may become a useful tool for ecological data analysis.

ABSTRACT

Informações acerca de potenciais criadouros naturais de flebotomíneos sempre foram de fundamental interesse epidemiológico. Contudo, são poucas as informações advindas dos diversos estudos realizados até o momento. Isto se deve principalmente às dificuldades de localização e extração dos imaturos que se desenvolvem no solo e matéria orgânica do chão de florestas. No presente estudo o modelo modificado de armadilha de emergência foi testado na Vila do Pitinga, município de Presidente Figueiredo, Estado do Amazonas, a fim de localizar potenciais criadouros naturais. Vinte e sete indivíduos de nove espécies (Lutzomyia umbratilis,L. monstruosa,L. ayrozai,L. anduzei,L. trichopyga,L. davisi,L. geniculata,L. georgii e L. saulensis) foram coletados. Lutzomyia umbratilis foi a espécie com maior número de indivíduos, 10, representando 37,1 por cento do total. A produção de flebotomíneos foi estimada em 2,2 flebotomíneos por 100 m² por dia. Em setembro, mês com maior número de indivíduos, esta produção foi de 5,8.


Information concerning the potential natural breeding sites of phlebotomine sandflies are of high epidemiological importance. However, few studies have been conducted on the subject. This is due especially to the difficulties in finding as well as extracting immature sandflies that develop in the soil and organic matter of the forest floor. In the present study, a modified emergence trap model was tested in order to find potential breeding sites. This model was tested in the Pitinga Village, situated in the Presidente Figueredo municipality, in the State of Amazonas. Twenty-seven individuals belonging to nine species (Lutzomyia umbratilis,L. monstruosa,L. ayrozai,L. anduzei,L. trichopyga,L. davisi,L. geniculata,L. georgii e L. saulensis.) were collected. Lutzomyia umbratilis showed the highest number of individuals (37.1 percent) of all species captured in the area. The phlebotomine productivity was estimated as 2.2 sandflies per 100 m²/day. September showed the highest density of individuals, with a productivity of 5.8.
