ABSTRACT

Encouraging sustainable dietary practices is a positive step towards alleviating the negative impact of increasing food waste. This study explores consumers' perceptions of sustainable diets and factors influencing their adoption of sustainable practices, such as circular eating. Fifteen consumers in Ireland aged 18-65+ years were recruited for a qualitative study exploring their views on sustainable diets and their opinions on the use of peels, trimmings, and other by-products from fruit and vegetables as potential new ingredients or new circular food products. Age, gender, dietary preferences and educational background were important considerations during recruitment. Online interviews were conducted, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis managed by NVivo 12. The results highlighted two overarching themes impacting circular eating, namely, food choice motives and awareness of food waste. These were linked to the participants' knowledge of and potential adoption of sustainable diets. Daily trade-offs were evident, linked to the product and the person who was also strongly influenced by their micro-environment. Consumer education from credible sources would be required to create awareness of circular eating. Most respondents were positively disposed to the concept of circular eating, as long as food safety concerns and affordability considerations were addressed through industry transparency.

ABSTRACT

Food consumption behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic has changed worldwide as a consequence of the restrictions imposed by law and/or due to the fear of contamination. Although some similarities are found among countries, there are still many particularities for each nation. The present study focused on Romanian consumers and their consumption behavior related to four main food categories: fruits and vegetables, meat and meat products, bread and bakery products, and milk and milk products. Frequency of buying, shopping habits, place of purchase, and concerns related to the place of purchasing food products during the COVID-19 pandemic were analyzed in comparison with the pre-COVID-19 period using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics regarding an online survey. Three types of behavior were identified as being related to the frequency of buying and to organizing a shopping list (less often, no change, more often). Two groups of consumers were identified as being related to the place of purchasing food: people with the same habits and people with new habits. Concerns related to the location of the stores and to the choice of buying directly from producers were also investigated using the ordered logistic regression. The empirical study revealed the new consumption patterns with a reflection on future trends.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: in 2016, a Final Degree Project coming from the Nutrition career of the University of Buenos Aires sought to discourage the waste of food as part of the students' graduation party. This led to the Nutriconscious Celebration (NC) that used social networks and face-to-face interventions to change this habit. Objectives: to evaluate the impact of the Nutriconscious Celebration. Materials and methods: online survey to a non-probabilistic sample of 115 Graduates in Nutrition graduated from the UBA during 2017. Results and Conclusions: 81% of respondents celebrated their graduation without using food (95% reported influence of the NC); in the rest the decision of throwing food away fell on family and friends. NC was presented in mass media and national and international congresses with very good repercussion. The brand is patented. Work is in progress together with careers in Nutrition of the rest of the country for its reproduction and with Commune 2 of the Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires to extend it to other levels of Formal Education. It is meant with this intervention to reach the graduate's family and friends(AU).

ABSTRACT

Abstract This research aims to demonstrate some of the meanings attributed to Physical Education as seen on the Medida Certa segment, aired by Globo Television Network in the Fantastico show, in 2011. This segment showed the work of a Physical Education instructor whose goal was to "reboot" the body of the participants within three months. The adjustments basically consisted in the adhesion to physical activity and in dietary improvements. The audience was also invited to modify their behaviors by following the advice being given to the participants. Discourse analysis will be the theoretical basis for the investigation on the process of meaning production. The analyzed data was collected on the network´s website, which made the segment temporarily available online. After careful observation, dialogues were transcribed and categories were identified, the latter having been analyzed based on a preexisting analytical framework which considers the title, the speaker, the content of the speech, the intermediary and the strategies for publishing the discourse. Aside from shedding light on the meanings currently attributed to Physical Education in television media, the study reflects on some of the principles that conduct the elaboration of bodily practices today. We concluded that the idea behind the Medida Certa segment has contributed to a biologic, risk-based outlook on Physical Education, which derives its value from being the subject´s source of salvation through advice given mainly by the physical education instructor. The show´s approach is also deficient with regards to the social issues which the audience may face.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the relationship between mental effort and personal time perspective during the process of individual changing bad habits. Methods 230 graduate students were collected to attend this longitudinal study of 21 days by experience sampling method. The data on mental effort and performance were obtained from the process of daily change of the bad behavior.Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) was applied to graduate students. The survey results were analyzed by hierarchical linear modeling (HLM).Results In 21 days, the mental effort of subjects showed very clear downward trend, the trend of the change was statistical significant (total score(5.63±2.62),t=-5.590,P<0.01).Mental effort didn't have significant difference in five kinds of behavioral objectives (keeping early hours, exercising daily, dieting, reading daily, limiting screen time) (P>0.05).The male obviously put more effort than the female during the study(t=2.743,P<0.01).Both Present Hedonism and Futurism were inversely related to mental effort, which was statistical significant (t=-2.504,P<0.05;t=2.39,P<0.05).Both Present Fatalism and Futurism had the effects on the changing trend of the mental effort regulatory, which was statistical significant (t=-3.099,P<0.01;t=-2.400,P<0.05).Conclusion The mental effort of changing the behavior will gradually decline during the process of habit establishment. The mental effort of subjects who had present fatalism or futurism show a faster decline.
