ABSTRACT

This case is about a post viral olfactory dysfunction due to SARS-CoV-2 infection, since six months treated effectively by a unique integrative approach with Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Acupuncture (TCA). It started as a sudden onset of anosmia in the month of August 2020 with fever history two weeks prior. After three months Parosmia commenced which gradually worsened. A month later she experienced dysgeusia and nausea leading to tremendous stress and sleep disturbances. Ayurveda treatment included Shadbindu taila marsha nasya for seven days followed by Shadbindu taila pratimarsha nasya (intra nasal oil instillation) for a period of four months. Naradiya laxmivilasa rasa orally for one month. GV.20, LI.20, Ex.1, H.7, LI.11, GB.8, GB.21 and GV.25 Points were selected for TCA. The Indian Smell identification test score on day one of treatment was zero, day seven was four, at the end of one month was eight and after four months it was ten. Parosmia was assessed by VAS which was ten on day one and zero on day seven. We could achieve complete normalcy in olfactory function within four months of this treatment. This integrative approach was found to be safe and effective in treating Post covid parosmia.

ABSTRACT

Lesion positioning therapy optimizes medical treatment by directly targeting lesions. However, strong physical barriers greatly hinder its wide use. Here, the Chinese acupuncture needles (CA-needles) with a screw-thread structure at the tip (ST-needle) and the hydrogel with the function of adhesive metal and loaded drug sustained-release structure are designed, through the minimally invasive and precise positioning of lesions by ST-needles, the dry-wet conversion of hydrogel with absorbing fluids and swelling, and the rotation back of ST-needles, the hydrogel is precisely positioned in the subchondral bone with physical barrier to achieve precise positioning therapy for lesions. In vitro experiments show that the ST-needle penetrates the physical barrier of cartilage and enters the subchondral bone. Simultaneously, the hydrogel transfer efficiency of the ST-needle (73.25%) is significantly higher than that of the CA-needle (29.92%) due to the protective effect of the screw-thread structure. In vivo experiments demonstrate that precise positioning in subchondral bone in osteoarthritis rats with ST-needles effectively inhibits abnormal subchondral bone remodeling, alleviating the degeneration and degradation of cartilage. Therefore, ST-needles achieve lesion positioning therapy through minimally invasive penetration of physical barriers, precisely positioning within lesions, and delivering hydrogel to release drugs.

ABSTRACT

The academician CHENG Xin-nong's academic thoughts and his contributions to the acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine are summarized. Academician CHENG emphasizes the importance of meridian theory to acupuncture and moxibustion. He has hosted the National Climbing Program "Meridian Research", and put forward the symptom differentiation along the running course of channel and symptom differentiation based on meridian tropism. He values the guiding role of TCM theory on clinical practice of acupuncture and moxibustion, and advocates that acupoints have the same properties as traditional Chinese herb. He has established the acupuncture and moxibustion treatment based on syndrome differentiation, which includes principle, method, prescription, acupoint and technique. He is good at summarizing the acupuncture and moxibustion treatment rules of dominant diseases of TCM, and has formed his own unique acupuncture method in clinical practice: San-Cai acupuncturing method. In addition, he is one of the important founders of acupuncture and moxibustion education in the New China by pioneering early education of acupuncture and moxibustion and compiling textbooks. He is also the pioneer of international communication of acupuncture and moxibustion, carrying out international training of acupuncture and moxibustion, and spreading knowledge of acupuncture and moxibustion. He has the qualities of a great physician, dedicated to clinical practice and very kind to patients.

ABSTRACT

In order to inherit the ancient acupuncture reinforcing and reducing methods and provide references to study those methods, this paper is based on much literature of reinforcing and reducing methods by twirling the needle and "rotating the needle to the left for reinforcing, to the right for reducing". With yin-yang theory of traditional Chinese medicine, including descending and ascending of yin-yang, the principle of "Hetu" and "Luoshu", and Taiji (quintessence of universe) and the Eight Diagrams, we analyse reinforcing and reducing methods by twirling the needle of "rotating the needle to the left for reinforcing, to the right for reducing". Besides, combined with modern experimental and clinical studies, the feasibility and efficacy of twisting reinforcing and reducing are demonstrated. This paper also gives scholars new insights and enriches the theoretical knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine of reinforcing and reducing methods by rotating the needle, to guide experimental research and clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:: To evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture for pain relief and function improvement in patients with knee osteoarthritis and to determine the feasibility of an eight-week acupuncture intervention. DESIGN:: Pilot randomized controlled trial. SETTING:: Three teaching hospitals in China. SUBJECTS:: Patients with knee osteoarthritis (Kellgren grade II or III). INTERVENTIONS:: Patients were randomly assigned to an eight-week (three sessions per week) intervention of either traditional Chinese acupuncture or sham acupuncture. MAIN MEASURES:: The primary outcome was response rate-the proportion of patients achieving score ⩾36% decrease in Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain and function at week 8 compared with baseline. Secondary outcomes included pain, function and quality of life. RESULTS:: Of 42 patients randomized, 36 (85.7%) completed the study. There was no significant difference in response rate between the traditional Chinese acupuncture and control groups: 61.9% (13 of 21) versus 42.9% (9 of 21) achieved score ⩾36% decrease in WOMAC pain and function at week 8 ( P = 0.217). The sum of WOMAC pain and function scores at week 8 was 11.6 (9.1) in the traditional Chinese acupuncture group compared with 16.3 (10.9) in the control group ( P = 0.183). There was no significant difference between groups. Three adverse events were recorded and were classified as mild. CONCLUSION:: It showed that three sessions per week acupuncture intervention of knee osteoarthritis was feasible and safe. No difference was observed between groups due to small sample size. Larger (sample size ⩾ 296) randomized controlled trials of this intervention appear justified.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To carry on the quality assessment of the case reports published in Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion. METHODS: The case reports were retrieved electronically published in Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion from 2006 to 2016. The Writing guideline for case report of traditional Chinese medicine was adopted to assess the quality of case report, in which, 15 items were included. The percentage of each item was calculated as the quality score. RESULTS: Totally, 288 case reports were included. The reports on the title, patient's information, clinical manifestations and treatment measures were quite complete (accounting to over 90%). But the report was limited on the key words, abstract, background and the informed consent. The overall quality score was low (accounting to 88.19%). Of 288 case reports, only 34 case reports (accounting to 11.81%) were of the high quality. The overall quality score of the inclusive literatures was in the range from 29 to 31 points. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to improve the quality of case report on acupuncture and moxibustion. It is anticipated to develop the writing guideline for the case report on acupuncture and moxibustion for the contribution to the development of acupuncture and moxibustion.

ABSTRACT

The literature of Japanese medical acupuncture introduced before 1949 has a definite impact on Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion in the period of Republic of China and the early period of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. In the present paper, the authors introduce its impact from: 1) Chinese medical works on acupuncture and moxibustion absorbed a lot of western medicine knowledge, and interpreted some underlying mechanisms chiefly according to the theory of nerve, blood and endocrine, including the meridian-collateral theory based on the structures of blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves, etc.; 2) In some Chinese clinical books, some Japanese new techniques as "tube-needling" (sparrow-pecking needling, etc.) were introduced, the acupuncture treatment of disorders was discussed from the nomenclature of western medicine and some operative standards (dissection of acupuncture needles, etc.) in clinical practice were accepted; 3) Some western medicine courses, and subject settings were introduced in Chinese acupuncture education. In general, Japanese acupuncture literature introduced before 1949 promotes integration of traditional acupuncture theory and western medicine in the early period of new China, enriches practical techniques in clinical practice and accelerates the development of acupuncture education in some way.

ABSTRACT

Cerebral hemodynamic parameters are related to the occurrence and development of the cerebral vascular diseases. This paper proposes a new possible method for control treatment on cerebral circulation network diseases. Cerebral circulation is taken as a kind of fluid network that should be controlled. The acupuncture treatment in traditional Chinese medicine is used as an actuator, whose design principle is changing the artery pressure and resistance of the cerebral circulation to increase the blood flow, so as to achieve the purpose of treating cerebral circulation diseases. Clinical data of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment has also preliminarily proved the correctness of this method.
