ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of curriculum modifications on periodontal instrumentation skills development among classes of 2021, 2022, and 2023 during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The pandemic began and affected the three classes at different stages of their studies. Onsite simulation-based learning (SBL) was employed for the classes of 2021 and 2022; remote SBL was adopted for the class of 2023. Modified clinical education, due to social distancing guidelines, impacted the class of 2021 significantly and the class of 2022 to a lesser extent. A multiple linear regression model was built to examine the association between the fourth-year patient-based scaling competency examination scores and selected predictors. RESULTS: The classes of 2021 and 2023 showed consistent performances over time, while the class of 2022 exhibited significant variation exhibiting the lowest performance at the second-year practical examination. While the clinical experience of the class of 2021 was significantly less than that of the classes of 2022 and 2023, the fourth-year competency examination scores did not differ across the three classes. The clinic points (p = 0.014) significantly affected the fourth-year competency examination score while student gender (p = 0.18), the first-year (p = 0.736), and second-year (p = 0.198) practical examination scores showed no correlations. CONCLUSION: Based on student performance in the fourth-year scaling competency examination, the curriculum modifications due to the COVID pandemic did not affect student learning outcomes. Clinical experience was the most influential determinant of skill development in periodontal instrumentation.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Merkel cell carcinoma diagnosis is often based on microscopic examination by pathologists. While histopathologic diagnosis primarily hinges on conscious and analytical cognition, the pathologist's decision-making process is also influenced by a rapid "gist" or "gestalt" approach. In this study, using cases of Merkel cell carcinoma as a model, we aim to assess how pathologists' viewing short videos containing conceptual clues and visual aids, in conjunction with reading an original article as a reference, may enhance their diagnostic performance. METHOD: Sixteen pathologists were included in the present work. After participants had read the original article, their ability to distinguish Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV)+ and MCPyV- Merkel cell carcinoma cases was evaluated on a first preliminary series of 20 cases. Following this test, the participants watched the video and then evaluated a second "experimental" series of 20 independent cases. RESULTS: After reading the original article, for each case, a median number of 12 participants (75%, Q1-Q3: 10-13) classified the specimen in the correct category (92 incorrect answers in the whole series). An important interobserver variability was observed in this setting (Kappa coefficient = 0.465). By contrast, following the video, all cases were correctly classified by most of the participants, with only 12 incorrect answers on the whole series and excellent interobserver reproducibility (Kappa coefficient = 0.846). CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that providing a short video together with an original article may enhance pathologists' performance in diagnosing Merkel cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Physical therapy educators strive to achieve excellence in education and develop clinicians who are prepared to meet the health needs of society. Previous research has focused on describing the traits, beliefs, and experiences of exemplary educators and clinicians to inform didactic and clinical curricula and serve as a model for expert practice. However, no studies have explored the experiences and perspectives of exemplary students. PURPOSE: The aim of this phenomenological study was to describe the traits, beliefs, and experiences of exemplary physical therapist (PT) students in clinical education. METHODS: A phenomenological design was utilized to gather data through semi-structured interviews with 26 students from the United States who met the criteria for exemplary and were completing their terminal clinical experience or were within six months of graduation. Data were analyzed using constant comparison and methodological rigor was maintained using an inquiry audit, peer debriefing, member checking, and pilot interviewing. RESULTS: A Desire to Serve emerged as an overarching theme. The essence of being exemplary was further elucidated through the following themes: (1) Being adaptable (2) Being reflective (3) Embracing challenges and seeking opportunities (4) Valuing a collaborative relationship with their CI (5) Importance of self-care, and (6) Coming into my own as a PT. CONCLUSION: Given the emphasis on excellence in physical therapy education, these results can provide insights for defining the necessary qualities for achieving excellence in both classroom and clinical environments. Additionally, these findings can assist educators in fostering excellence-driven attributes among entry-level students.

ABSTRACT

AIM: This study aimed to investigate factors influencing nursing students' satisfaction with aged care placements. BACKGROUND: Providing positive clinical experiences in aged care is crucial for students to learn safe, quality care and to foster a sustainable workforce. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study METHODS: Nursing students in nursing degrees participated in the national placement evaluation survey. A total of 2378 responses were extracted from the national clinical placement evaluation survey in 2023. Using multinomial logistic regression, demographics, academic, placement characteristics and placement education quality (clinical environment and learning support) were investigated in relation to three different levels of students' overall satisfaction (low, moderate, high). RESULTS: Students reported overall satisfaction with their clinical placement, with a mean score of 7.9 (SD=2.1) on a 10-point scale. While most students agreed that they had achieved their learning objectives (90.0 %), they reported limited opportunities to interact with the multidisciplinary team (80.0 %). Further, students reported a relatively negative experience with staff, such as willingness to work with students (78.9 %) and being positive role models (78.9 %). Comparing the low satisfaction group to the moderate satisfaction group, male gender, identifying as an indigenous student and higher academic years increased the odds of being 'least satisfied', whereas international students, whose first language was not English and those with higher perceived placement education quality scores had lower odds of low satisfaction group membership. Conversely, compared with the moderate satisfaction group, those with the highest satisfaction with their clinical placement had a greater odds of being older, an international student and having higher scores in placement quality for the clinical environment and learning support. This model predicted 58.7 % of students' overall satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS: Positive learning experiences in aged care may promote the importance of practice in this area to new graduates. Despite students' overall positive satisfaction with aged care placements, it is clear there are areas to address: a need to develop a structured approach to enhance aged care clinical experiences, progressive development of learning objectives, enhancing student career preparation and increasing participation in interprofessional collaboration may be useful approaches.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: There is increasing demand for professional practice placement opportunities, supported by health professional educators, to enable future health workforce development. Early career health professionals performing the educator role is one strategy that can help meet this demand. However, there is a need to consider how best to prepare and support early career health professionals to become educators. This study aimed to explore the experiences and perspectives of early career occupational therapy clinical educators including their preparation and support needs. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were completed with ten early career occupational therapists who had supervised their first or second student on a professional practice placement. The participants worked within an Australian tertiary hospital and health service in various clinical settings. Interviews were completed within six weeks of placement completion and lasted approximately one hour. They were recorded and transcribed verbatim and reflexive inductive thematic analysis was undertaken to identify key themes. RESULTS: Ten occupational therapists, who had been working for an average of two years and two months, consented to participate. Initially, participants expressed mixed emotions about taking on the clinical educator role. They then described their adjustment to the role responsibilities, challenges encountered, and the development of the educator-student relationship. Participants found that the experience of supervising a student enhanced their educator, clinical, and professional skills and confidence. The important support elements of tailored educator preparation, placement design, and timely access to relevant resources and experienced staff were identified. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated how early career health professionals can possess desirable educator attributes, such as enthusiasm for taking on the role and cultivating collaborative learning relationships with their students. The experience of being an educator also presents a professional development opportunity for early career health professionals. Insights gained about the specific preparation and support needs of early career clinical educators warrant consideration by organisations and staff involved in the provision of student professional practice placements. Overall, this study's findings signify the importance of engaging and investing in early career health professionals to support student clinical education and to develop our current and future healthcare workforce.

ABSTRACT

While the process of teaching student perfusionists has been in development since the 1950s, the publication of the processes to improve perfusion clinical education has been largely lacking. Publications regarding education from other allied health and medical fields have shown the value of student-centered learning. The use of reflective practice to move perfusion students from thinking about actions after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) to reflecting and reacting on actions during CPB is better encouraged by moving from a teacher-centered to a student-centered clinical model. Our institution's teaching process has developed into a multi-point procedure to make our students into reflective practicing clinicians. Student preceptor evaluations were reversed to allow the students to evaluate themselves first, with feedback from the preceptor given subsequently. Additionally, a biweekly student educational session, where the student chooses a topic and reviews current evidence-based practice, was instituted. The clinical program director serves as the moderator and clinical expert to facilitate problem-based learning during the sessions. Students were also given three skill/experience levels with goals to reach and move through during the rotation. These student levels were also helpful to our preceptors in knowing what each student's skill level was throughout their rotation. Overall, moving from a teacher-centered to a student-centered clinical rotation has helped make students familiar with reflective practice, self-evaluation, evidence-based practice, and problem-based learning. The incorporation of these processes will hopefully lead students to become lifelong reflective perfusionists.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to test the relationship between the components of the Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) including memory, intrinsic and extraneous cognitive load in workplace-based learning in a clinical setting, and decision-making skills of nursing students. METHODS: This study was conducted at Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences in 2021-2023. The participants were 151 nursing students who studied their apprenticeship courses in the teaching hospitals. The three basic components of the cognitive load model, including working memory, cognitive load, and decision-making as the outcome of learning, were investigated in this study. Wechsler's computerized working memory test was used to evaluate working memory. Cognitive Load Inventory for Handoffs including nine questions in three categories of intrinsic cognitive load, extraneous cognitive load, and germane cognitive load was used. The clinical decision-making skills of the participants were evaluated using a 24-question inventory by Lowry et al. based on a 5-point scale. The path analysis of AMOS 22 software was used to examine the relationships between components and test the model. FINDINGS: In this study, the goodness of fit of the model based on the cognitive load theory was reported (GIF = 0.99, CFI = 0.99, RMSEA = 0.03). The results of regression analysis showed that the scores of decision-making skills in nursing students were significantly related to extraneous cognitive load scores (p-value = 0.0001). Intrinsic cognitive load was significantly different from the point of view of nursing students in different academic years (p = 0.0001). CONCLUSION: The present results showed that the CLT in workplace-based learning has a goodness of fit with the components of memory, intrinsic cognitive load, extraneous cognitive load, and clinical decision-making skill as the key learning outcomes in nursing education. The results showed that the relationship between nursing students' decision-making skills and extraneous cognitive load is stronger than its relationship with intrinsic cognitive load and memory Workplace-based learning programs in nursing that aim to improve students' decision-making skills are suggested to manage extraneous cognitive load by incorporating cognitive load principles into the instructional design of clinical education.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the development, content, structure, and implementation of a case-based collaborative learning, flipped classroom, integrated preclinical neurology, neuroanatomy, and neuroscience course for first year medical students at Harvard Medical School. We report the methods for pre-class preparation, in-class instruction, and evaluation; student feedback with respect to content, teaching method, and learning environment; and several lessons learned regarding how to optimize preparatory and in-class learning in a case-based flipped classroom course.

INTRODUCTION: Increased access to midwifery care is one strategy that could improve perinatal health outcomes and help address the maternal health crisis in the United States. A modifiable barrier to increasing the workforce is greater access to midwifery preceptors for clinical training. The objective of this research is to use the socioecological framework to identify midwives' perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to precepting students in clinical areas. METHODS: Midwives attending a preceptor education and training workshop series responded to 3 different questions at the end of each session: (1) What makes precepting midwifery students challenging? (2) What makes precepting midwifery students possible? and (3) What makes precepting midwifery students worthwhile? Responses were coded to align with the socioecological framework, which distinguishes individual, interpersonal, community, institutional, and policy-level influences. RESULTS: Midwives' responses were spread across the levels of the socioecological model except for policy. Participants identified institutional influences such as support as factors that made precepting feasible, both individual and interpersonal factors such as time constraints as areas that presented challenges to precepting, and community factors, like the joy of sharing midwifery, contributing to what made precepting worthwhile. DISCUSSION: Multiple levels of influence were identified in the preceptor process. Participants were internally motivated to precept while also articulating that to make precepting possible, there is a need for support from both colleagues and the greater systems within which they worked. Further studies are needed to investigate an ecosystem that facilitates an effective and sustainable model for midwifery precepting. Additionally, there is a need for efforts to engage and educate midwives in clinical practice about government advocacy that could actualize policy initiatives to support clinical midwifery education.

BACKGROUND: Although interprofessional student led health clinics have been implemented worldwide, the impact of this model await confirmation. OBJECTIVES: To conduct a critical analysis of the literature on interprofessional student led clinics, and the views of stakeholders on feasibility and the barriers and facilitators to implementation. DESIGN: A scoping review, evidence synthesis and quality appraisal were conducted using PRISMA Scr. Eight databases were searched from 2003 to 2023: Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCO), Cochrane, Scopus, ERIC, Web of Science and Informit Health Collection. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to analyse data from patients, students and educators and inductive thematic analysis identified emergent themes. RESULTS: Forty-six studies were included from a yield of 3140 publications. A key theme to emerge was that patients perceived improvements in their health and wellbeing and valued gaining health information from student led clinics. Student experiences were mostly positive although some found it challenging to work in interprofessional teams and roles were not always clear. The clinics enabled students to improve communication skills and autonomy. Clinical educators reported that students benefited from experiential learning within an interprofessional context. The clinics were feasible, provided that sufficient funding, infrastructure, staff and resources were available. Barriers to implementation included lack of funding, excessive waiting times and non-aligned student timetables. Pre-clinic orientation and support from on-site clinical educators facilitated implementation. CONCLUSIONS: Despite some challenges with implementing interprofessional student led clinics, they can have a positive impact on student learning and patient experiences.

BACKGROUND: Clinical education plays an essential role in shaping the nursing identity and is one of the central elements in the education of nursing students. Today, with the advancement of novel technologies, utilizing mobile phone-based technologies in the education of medical sciences is inevitable. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the impact of the urology educational application on nursing students' cognitive-functional criteria and satisfaction during the internship period. METHODS: This experimental educational intervention study was conducted during nursing students' urology internship course at Shahid Beheshti School of Nursing and Midwifery in Rasht. The data collection tools included a demographic characteristics questionnaire, cognitive skills scale, functional skills scale, and satisfaction scale (Stokes, 2001). The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 16, and a significance level was set at 0.05. RESULTS: Out of 48 studied students, 28 (58.3%) were males. The mean age of the students was 20.34 (SD = 1.51) years. In the application group, the mean of students' cognitive skills after the intervention significantly increased by 2.33 units (95% CI: 1.73 to 2.9) (t(23) = 7.97, P < 0.001, d = 1.626). By controlling the scores before the intervention, the adjusted mean score of cognitive skills in the application group was 0.56 units (95% CI: -0.16 to 1.28) higher than the traditional group; however, this difference was not statistically significant (F(1, 45) = 2.42, P = 0.127, η2p = 0.051). There was no statistically significant difference between the mean score of students' functional skills in traditional and application groups (t(46) = 0.63, P = 0.532, d = 0.184). The total mean score of satisfaction with education in the application group was 83.0 (SD: 10.7). According to the values ​​of the quartiles, 75% of the students scored higher than 75.9, 50% scored higher than 83.9, and 25% scored higher than 91.1. CONCLUSION: According to the results of this study, students' scores of functional and cognitive assessment and satisfaction with the application in urology clinical training were reported as favorable. Therefore, it is recommended that mobile phone-based technologies be used in students' clinical education and internships in combination with the traditional method.

Phenomenon: This study explored experiences of simulation-based clinical education in the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology professions in South Africa, a Global South context where research on this topic is limited. In this context, the COVID-19 pandemic brought simulation to the forefront of clinical education as a training solution when in-person encounters were impossible. As these simulation-based training approaches gain traction, with continued use post-pandemic, it is important to understand how they are currently being used so that appropriate support can be offered to ensure their efficiency and success in the future. Approach: We distributed a survey to South African university departments offering Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology training, inviting participation from students across years of study and clinical educators. Data were collected between October 2022 and February 2023. Twelve responses were received: three from clinical educators and nine from students. We analyzed the responses using descriptive statistics and a domain summary approach. Findings: Simulated activities were implemented as options for clinical education in South African Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SLP/A) programs during the pandemic, albeit in a somewhat haphazard way depending on available resources, often with limited preparation or guidance. Some universities have continued using aspects of simulation training post-pandemic. Insights: Our findings, although preliminary, are somewhat consistent with Global North literature, particularly regarding barriers and challenges to implementing these approaches in clinical education. We offer suggestions for enhancing the support of simulation-based clinical education in our context.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is embarking on a project to implement a Decentralized Clinical Training Program (DCTP). The DUT FHS DCTP project is being conducted in response to the growing demands of students requiring clinical service placements as part of work-integrated learning. The project is also geared toward responding to existing gaps in current practices related to the implementation of a DCTP, which has mainly been through traditional universities providing training to medical, optometry, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy students. In South Africa, a DCTP is yet to be implemented within the context of a university of technology; it is yet to be implemented within health science faculties that offer undergraduate health science programs in mainstream biomedicine and alternative and complementary disciplines. OBJECTIVE: We aim to design, pilot, and establish an effective DCTP at the DUT FHS in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. METHODS: Participatory action research comprising various designs-namely, appreciative inquiry, qualitative case study design, phenomenography, and descriptive qualitative study design-will be used to conduct the study. Data will be collected using individual interviews, focus group discussions, nominal group technique, consensus methodology, and narrative inquiry. Study participants will include various internal and external stakeholders of the DUT, namely, academic staff; students; key informants from universities currently using successfully established DCTPs; academic support staff; staff working in human resources, finance, procurement, and accounting; and experts in other disciplines such as engineering and information systems. Overall, 4 undergraduate health science programs-namely, Radiography, Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics, Clinical Technology, and Emergency Medical Care and Rescue-will be part of the project's pilot phase. Findings from the project's pilot phase will be used to inform scale-up in the other undergraduate programs in the DUT FHS. The project is being implemented as part of the university's strategic objective of devising innovative curricula and pedagogical practices to improve the mastery, skill set, and competence of health science graduates. RESULTS: The study has currently commenced with the situational analysis, consisting of engagement with external stakeholders implementing DCTPs. The data to be generated from the completion of the situational analysis are anticipated to be published in 2024. CONCLUSIONS: This project is envisioned to facilitate collaboration among the universities of technology, traditional universities, Ministry of Health, and private sector for clinical placement of undergraduate health science students in health establishments that are away from the university, thereby exposing them to real-life experiences related to health care. This will facilitate authentic learning experiences that will contribute to improved competencies of graduates in relation to the health needs of society and the multiple realities of the South African health system. BACKGROUND: Clinical practice placements play an important role in preparing students for challenging areas of clinical practice. Little is known about student learning needs for working with patients with complex needs during clinical practice placements, and clinical educator decision-making that underpins this exposure. PURPOSE: To explore the perspectives of physiotherapy students and clinical educators on exposing students to working with and learning from patients with complex needs during clinical practice placements across Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. METHODS: Six semi-structured focus groups with pre-registration physiotherapy students undertaking clinical practice placements (n = 19) and semi-structured one-on-one interviews with clinical educators (n = 20). Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four overarching themes were generated following analysis: 1) Complexity is challenging; 2) Tension between student exposure and patient care; 3) Variance in expectations; and 4) Readiness for complexity. CONCLUSION: Physiotherapy students and clinical educators recognize the challenges and importance of exposure to patients with complex needs. Student learning experiences are influenced by clinical educator decision-making, which is often unclear, leading to varying opportunities. This study highlights the need for enhanced support from clinical educators to prepare students for working with patients with complex needs.

ABSTRACT

In many healthcare settings, teams change composition regularly, so healthcare students must be trained to function effectively in dynamic teams before entering the workforce. Interprofessional clinical rotations provide an ideal venue for learners to practice these skills, but little is known about how student teams interact in such settings. In this qualitative observational evaluation, learners from multiple health professions at a single institution participated in scheduled clinics in low-income housing communities for older adults. Interprofessional student teams met with program participants for care coordination, health and wellness assessments, and assistance in setting and achieving health goals; team composition changed from week-to-week. A purposive sample was selected from video-recorded encounters between student teams and their program participants. The aim of this study was to explore team interactions and document learner behaviors. Two researchers independently reviewed discrete segments of each video, recorded their observations and reflections, and then the team discussed, categorized, and identified relevant examples of both effective and ineffective behaviors. Four major themes were observed: inclusiveness, leadership, joy of practice, and sharing of clinical knowledge. Students demonstrated both positive and negative examples of behaviors that aligned with each theme. Understanding how students behave on teams in dynamic settings where patient care is taking place can help educators establish practice-based interprofessional education models that better prepare learners to function effectively and strategies that may improve team interactions.

BACKGROUND: Feedback is integral to medical education, enabling students to improve their knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Feedback practices may vary according to prevalent cultural and contextual factors. This study aimed to explore how feedback is conceptualized and practised in the clinical education of medical students in Sri Lanka. METHODS: The study was conducted in three medical schools and affiliated hospitals that represent the cultural diversity of Sri Lanka. Purposive sampling was utilized to recruit clinical teachers and students who would provide rich information for the study. The study had three components: an observation study, interviews with clinical teachers and focus group discussions with clinical students. During the observation study, video recording was used as a data collection tool to observe feedback in real-life clinical teaching/learning settings. A constructivist grounded theory approach was adapted for analysis to explore current practices and perceptions inductively. RESULTS: Feedback was conceptualised as spontaneous unidirectional provision of information for the improvement of students. It was often provided in public settings and in student groups. Error correction was the primary focus of feedback, but both teachers and students desired a balanced approach with reinforcement and reflection. Although the direct approach to corrective feedback was found beneficial for student learning, participants agreed that harsh feedback was to be avoided. The hierarchical culture and lack of programmed feedback in the curricula influenced feedback practices, suggesting the need for modification. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlighted feedback practices in the local context, emphasizing the need to address the hierarchical gap in clinical settings, balance reinforcement and correction, and promote dialogue and reflection in the feedback processes. The findings will help clinical teachers from both the global south as well as the global north to recognize cultural and contextual differences in providing feedback.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This project sought to investigate the impact of a multi-national peer learning initiative in facilitating a student-led conference on person-centred care (PCC). The primary objective was to assess students' comprehension of PCC elements before and after engaging in the opportunity, with a concurrent evaluation of the efficacy of the opportunity. DESIGN: A mixed-methods study protocol was followed. Following the conference, participants completed a four-part survey including (a) demographics, (b) retrospective pre-post Likert scale, (c) Likert rating of conference experience and (d) five open-ended questions. STUDY SAMPLE: One hundred and four participants (92.4% female) with a mean age of 21 years (0.07 SD) participated in the study. RESULTS: A significant difference in awareness pre-post conference was demonstrated across all topics (WSR, p < 0.001) with participants satisfied with the conference. Qualitative analysis revealed three main themes: (a) application of PCC; (b) perspectives of PCC; and () barriers to PCC; with nine sub-themes. CONCLUSION: The conference was beneficial in enhancing students' awareness of topics and principles of PCC. Innovative pedagogical approaches should be considered in order to enhance healthcare education allowing future clinicians to better meet the dynamic needs of their clients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Instrumented gait analysis (IGA) is an assessment and research tool with proven impacts on clinical decision-making for the management of ambulant children and young people with cerebral palsy (CYPwCP) but is underused and variably understood by relevant clinicians. Clinicians' difficulties in gaining expertise and confidence in using IGA are multifactorial and related to access for clinical decision-making, limited training opportunities and inability to translate this training into clinical practice. METHODS: The primary aim of this study is to test the feasibility of an educational intervention to advance clinicians' application of gait analysis in CYPwCP, to inform a definitive trial. The secondary aim is to measure the effect that appropriate IGA training has on physiotherapists' knowledge, skills, confidence and behaviours. This will be a two-arm feasibility randomised controlled trial with an experimental and control group. The 6-week on-line intervention uses a multicomponent approach grounded in behavioural change techniques. A repeated measures design will be adopted, whereby participants will complete outcome measures at baseline, immediately after the intervention and at 4 months. The primary outcome measures (trial feasibility-related outcomes) are recruitment and engagement. The secondary outcome measures (trial research-related outcomes) are knowledge, skills, confidence and practice change. Outcome measures will be collected via online questionnaires and during observed skill assessments. Analysis of data will use descriptive statistics, two-way mixed ANOVA model and qualitative content analysis. DISCUSSION: This study will determine feasibility of the definitive randomised control trial of educational intervention delivered to advance clinicians' application of gait analysis in CYPwCP. This study offers the shift in emphasis from regarding IGA as a tool to a focus on clinicians' requirements for access, training and a well-defined role to optimise utilisation of IGA. The impact of this should be better engagement with IGA and clinical practice change. This study will contribute to a body of educational research into clinical education of healthcare professionals and IGA training offering insight into high levels of evaluation evidence including clinical behaviour change. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Protocol has been registered with the Open Science Framework (osf.io/nweq6) in June 2023.

INTRODUCTION: With the premise that the demanding educational process and associated factors could influence the work-related quality of life (WRQoL) of dental students, this study aimed to investigate the influence of diverse sociodemographic and health-related factors, clinical education status, and sleep quality on the WRQoL of dental students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A three-part questionnaire was administered to a group of preclinical and clinical dental students studying in different classes. The first part of the questionnaire included various sociodemographic and health-related questions. In the second part, the multidimensional 23-item WRQoL scale, with established validity and reliability, was applied to evaluate the WRQoL of the students. The last part of the questionnaire included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, comprising 19 items. General linear models were created to predict subscale scores using sociodemographic and health-related characteristics, as well as univariate significant independent variables. RESULTS: It was observed that the majority of the participants (78.2%) had poor sleep quality. Being clinical dental students had a significant and positive effect on the stress at work domain of WRQoL (p = .006), while it had a significant and negative effect on the home-work interface domain (p < .001). The decrease in sleep quality had a significant and negative effect on all domains of WRQoL (p < .05) except for the stress at work domain. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical education status, regular smoking, and sleep quality significantly affect different domains of dental students' WRQoL. Changes in these factors should be considered in approaches to increasing students' WRQoL.
