ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To the creation of mutual aid relationships among people with cognitive decline is important in aging societies. This study aimed to develop and examine the feasibility of a GO Program in which older adults, with experience in playing GO, support the learning of GO by older adults with cognitive decline and other barriers to social participation, which in turn reduces social isolation and creates opportunities for older adults to use their role. METHODS: This single-arm intervention study was conducted in Tokyo, Japan. Introductory GO classes were held for 10 participants who had never played GO (beginners) and 10 participants who had (supporters) once a week for an hour, for a total of 12 sessions. Supporters and beginners were paired to solve problems and play games. We assessed the feasibility of the program and its effects on mental health social network, and cognitive function. RESULTS: Cognitive test scores were at the mild cognitive Impairment level for beginners as well as for supporters. Satisfaction with the program was high, with an overall class attendance rate of 99.1% and none leaving the program. No significant changes were observed over time for beginners in each measurement; however, there was a significant improvement in the Mini Mental State Examination-Japanese scores for supporters (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that this program could contribute to the creation of mutual aid relationships among older adults with cognitive decline; even if they have mildly declined cognitive function, they can still play an active role in society. Moreover, creating such opportunities may positively impact cognitive function.

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus (DM), a prevalent metabolic disorder, is associated with widespread damage to bodily systems, notably causing significant dysfunction within the peripheral and central nervous systems (CNS). The primary objective of this study is to explore the extent of DM's impact on cognitive and behavioral functions and to evaluate the therapeutic potential of ethanol leaf extracts from Ziziphus jujuba (ZJ) and Eclipta alba (EA) in mitigating these adverse effects. Utilizing an established animal model, we aimed to determine the effectiveness of these plant extracts in ameliorating the cognitive impairments commonly seen in diabetic states. In our experimental framework, we allocated Wistar rats (n=6 per group) into eight different groups, inducing DM through alloxan administration. The intervention groups were treated orally with either the standard antidiabetic drug glibenclamide or varying doses of ZJ and EA extracts over periods of seven and 21 days. Throughout the study, we carefully tracked fluctuations in blood glucose levels, noting considerable decreases, particularly following the 21-day treatment interval. Post-treatment, the rats' cognitive functions were assessed using the Morris water maze (MWM) test. This evaluation revealed significant cognitive enhancement in the diabetic rats administered with ZJ and EA extracts, with these groups displaying reduced latency in finding the submerged platform, indicative of improved learning and memory. These observations were statistically significant (p<0.01). The findings underscore the hypoglycemic effects of ZJ and EA extracts and suggest their viability as cognitive enhancers in the context of DM. The protective effects of these extracts against cognitive decline caused by DM are clear. They add important new information to the research on natural phytochemicals for managing chronic diseases. This study opens new avenues for the application of these substances in treating neurocognitive disorders associated with DM.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This longitudinal observational cohort study aimed to clarify the relationship between perceived value (PV) to adopt new behaviors and incident disability in community-dwelling older adults. METHOD: Participants were 5073 community-dwelling older adults aged ≥65 years in Japan (Mage = 74.0 ± 5.6 years; female = 55.1%). The mean follow-up time was 34.5 months. Baseline data were collected during health checkups in a prospective cohort study. Measurements included engagement in physical activity (PA), cognitive activity (CA), and social activity (SA), PV, health and physical conditions, and demographic characteristics. PV was assessed by asking whether participants thought it was valuable to adopt new behaviors related to PA, CA, and SA. Participants were classified as having higher/lower PV, PA, CA, and SA. Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the association between PV and incident disability. PV was examined both as an independent variable and in combination as follows: higher PV and higher PA/CA/SA (high/high); lower PV and higher PA/CA/SA (low/high); higher PV and lower PA/CA/SA (high/low); and lower PV and lower PA/CA/SA (low/low). RESULTS: Higher PV was significantly associated with a lower hazard ratio (HR) for incident disability. The low/high, high/low, and low/low significantly increased the HR compared to high/high in the analyses of PV & PA and CA. The analysis of PV & SA showed that only low/low increased the HR compared to high/high. CONCLUSION: Having both higher PV and higher activity engagement may contribute to preventing disability development. Both support for activities and value education in older adults may be needed.

ABSTRACT

The pupil diameter has been shown to provide insight to a person's experienced cognitive strain. Pupillary light responses, however, make this measure unreliable in uncontrolled settings. Two derived indicators-Index of Cognitive Activity (ICA) and Index of Pupillary Activity (IPA)-aim to 'eliminate' lighting influences, changing based only on the perceived cognitive strain. The IPA potentially offers a valuable alternative to the ICA through its fully transparent calculation, which lifts the restrictions to proprietary software and supported eye trackers. The measures are examined and compared based on two experimental studies; (i) as indicators of cognitive strain during mental arithmetic tasks and (ii) under different conditions of computer screen luminance. Results indicate that neither indicator differentiates between the increasing levels of cognitive strain. Differences in screen luminance are reflected in both indicators, although differently between the conditions. Both results contradict the claims of the indicators and further investigations are thus required.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To explore the associations of social support, and cognitive activity with cognitive impairment incidence, and further examine the mediation effect of cognitive activity on the association between social support and cognitive impairment incidence based on a nationwide elderly Chinese cohort. METHODS: We collected the participants from an ongoing cohort of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). A total of 9394 older adults aged 65 or more years and free of cognitive impairment who participated in the CLHLS between 2008 and 2018 were included. The information on social support and cognitive activity was collected through a questionnaire. The incident cognitive impairment cases were identified through the Mini-Mental State Examination scale (MMSE). Cox proportional hazard regression models were conducted to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of social support and cognitive activity associated with cognitive impairment. We used casual mediation models to assess the indirect association of cognitive activities underlying the association between social support and cognitive impairment. RESULTS: The adjusted HRs (95% CI) of incident cognitive impairment were 0.956 (0.932 to 0.980), and 0.895 (0.859 to 0.933) associated with per 1 score increase in social support and cognitive activity score, respectively. Better adherence to social support was associated with a higher cognitive activity score (adjusted ß = 0.046, 95% CI[0.032-0.060]). The baseline cognitive activity, as well as the mean cognitive activity at baseline and during the first follow-up wave, mediate the association between social support and the incidence of cognitive impairment, accounting for 11.4% and 12.6% of the total association, respectively. The participants who were aged 80 years or older, or those with mild daily functional limitations gained more benefits in the development of cognitive activity related to social support, leading to a reduction in the risks of cognitive impairment. CONCLUSION: The results of this nationwide cohort provide consistent evidence linking social support, and cognitive activity to reduced risk of subsequent cognitive impairment incidence. These findings provide additional evidence to inform the social strategies to prevent cognitive impairment incidence in elderly people.

ABSTRACT

Cognitive, social, and physical activities, collectively linked to cognitive reserve, are associated with better late-life cognitive outcomes. To better understand the building of cognitive reserve, we investigated which of these activities, during which stages of life, had the strongest associations with late-life cognitive performance. From the Sydney Memory and Aging Study, 546 older Australians, who were community-dwelling and without a dementia diagnosis at recruitment (Mage 80.13 years, 52.2% female), were asked about their engagement in social, physical, and cognitive activities throughout young adulthood (YA), midlife (ML), and late-life (LL). Comprehensive neuropsychological testing administered biennially over 6 years measured baseline global cognition and cognitive decline. In our study, YA, but not ML nor LL, cognitive activity was significantly associated with late-life global cognition (ß = 0.315, p < .001). A follow-up analysis pointed to the formal education component of the YA cognitive activity measure, rather than YA cognitive leisure activities, as a significant predictor of better late-life global cognition (ß = 0.146, p = .003). YA social activity and LL cognitive activity were significantly associated with less cognitive decline (ß = 0.023, p < .001, and ß = 0.016, p = .022, respectively). Physical activity was not found to be associated with global cognition or cognitive decline. Overall, YA cognitive activity was associated with better late-life cognition, and YA social and LL cognitive activities were associated with less cognitive decline. Formal education emerges as the key contributor in the association between YA cognitive activity and late-life global cognition.

AIMS: Vulnerable older adults tend to decrease physical activity (PA) and increase sedentary time (ST). Previous research on the associations between ST and brain volume have yielded inconsistent findings, without considering the impact of cognitive engagement (CE) on cognitive function. We aimed to examine the association between ST with CE and brain volume. METHODS: A structural magnetic resonance imaging survey was conducted among community-dwelling vulnerable older adults. Brain volumetric measurements were obtained using 3T magnetic resonance imaging and pre-processed using FreeSurfer. ST with low or high CE was assessed using a 12-item questionnaire. PA was assessed by the frequency of light and moderate levels of physical exercise according to the Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study criteria. Participants were categorized into a low PA group and a moderate-to-high PA group. RESULTS: Among 91 participants (83.1 ± 5.2 years old, 61.5% female), 26 were low PA. The overall sample and moderate-to-high PA group did not show significant positive associations with brain volume for ST with high CE. In the low PA group, isotemporal substitution models showed that replacing ST with low CE by ST with high CE was significantly associated with increased brain volume in some areas, including the rostral and caudal anterior cingulate (ß = 0.486-0.618, all P < 0.05, adjusted R2 = 0.344-0.663). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that replacing ST with low CE by ST with high CE is positively associated with brain volume in vulnerable older adults with low PA. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive activity questionnaires could provide insight into neurocognitive reserve. The Lifetime Cognitive Activities Questionnaire (LCAQ) assesses cognitive activities at four stages of life. The Modified Current Cognitive Activities Questionnaire (CCAQ) assesses current cognitive activities. We examined the construct validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and stability of these questionnaires throughout the Brain in Motion (BIM) study and their relationship with cognitive performance. METHODS: The LCAQ, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and neuropsychological battery were administered at the initial pre-intervention and six-year follow-up. The CCAQ was administered at five timepoints. Construct validity of the CCAQ/LCAQ was assessed using proxies of cognitive engagement (educational attainment and the North American Adult Reading Test [NAART]). Cronbach alpha analysis determined internal consistency. LCAQ reliability was established by comparing the pre-intervention and six-year follow-up. CCAQ reliability was determined by comparing both pre-intervention assessments, correlations throughout BIM determined stability. A multiple linear regression investigated the associations between cognitive engagement and cognitive domains derived from a principal component analysis. RESULTS: MoCA scores at the initial pre-intervention (27.49 ± 1.46) and six-year follow up (26.53 ± 2.08). The LCAQ and CCAQ correlated with educational attainment and the NAART. The LCAQ (n = 266) produced an alpha of 0.90 (20 items). The CCAQ (n = 261) resulted in an alpha of 0.71 (25 items). LCAQ scores (n = 94) at the initial pre-intervention and six-year follow-up were correlated. CCAQ (n = 94) scores at the initial pre-intervention correlated with scores at all five other timepoints. The multiple linear regression revealed associations between the CCAQ and verbal memory/attention. The NAART was associated with processing speed, concept formation, and verbal memory/attention. CONCLUSIONS: In the absence of cognitive decline, these questionnaires exhibit significant construct validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and the CCAQ displayed stability. The NAART and CCAQ were associated with neuropsychological performance. Our findings support future use of these questionnaires and exemplify the neuroprotective role of cognitive engagement.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding the influence of cognitive activity on subsequent sleep has both theoretical and applied implications. This study aims to investigate the effect of pre-sleep cognitive activity, in the context of avoiding emotional interference, on macro-sleep and sleep spindles. METHODS: In a within-subjects design, participants' sleep electroencephalography was collected in both the with and without pre-sleep cognitive activity conditions. Subsequent macro-sleep (i.e., sleep stage distribution and sleep parameters) and spindle characteristics (i.e., density, amplitude, duration, and frequency) were analyzed. In addition, a novel machine learning framework (i.e., deep neural network, DNN) was used to discriminate between cognitive activity and control conditions. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in macro-sleep and sleep spindles between the cognitive activity and control conditions. Spindles-based DNN models achieved over 96% accuracy in differentiating between the two conditions, with fast spindles performing better than full-range and slow spindles. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest a weak but positive effect of pre-sleep cognitive activity on subsequent sleep. It sheds light on a possible low-cost and easily accessible sleep intervention strategy for clinical and educational purposes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: More frequent engagement in cognitive activity is associated with better cognitive function in older adults, but the mechanism of action is not fully understood. Debate remains whether increased cognitive activity provides a meaningful benefit for cognitive health or if decreased cognitive activity represents a prodrome of cognitive impairment. Neurological biomarkers provide a novel way to examine this relationship in the context of cognitive aging. METHODS: We examined the association of self-reported cognitive activity, cognitive function, and concentrations of three biomarkers in community-dwelling participants of a longitudinal, population-based study. Cognitive activity was measured at baseline by asking participants to rate the frequency of 7 activities: (1) viewing television, (2) listening to the radio, (3) visiting a museum, (4) playing games, such as cards, checkers, crosswords, or other puzzles or games, (5) reading books, (6) reading magazines, and (7) reading newspapers. Cognitive function was measured with a battery of four tests (Mini-Mental State Examination, Digit Symbol Test, and the immediate and delayed recall of the East Boston Test) averaged into a composite score. At baseline, we evaluated the concentration of total tau (tau), neurofilament light (NfL), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). RESULTS: The study sample comprised 1,168 older participants, primarily non-Hispanic Blacks (60%) and women (63%). At baseline, they were an average of 77 years old with 12.6 years of education. Mixed-effects models showed that cognitive activity was associated with better cognitive functioning at baseline and over time. These relationships remained after each biomarker was added to the model. Over an average of 6.4 years of follow-up, cognitive activity was associated with cognitive decline in the model with tau (estimate = 0.0123; p value = 0.03) and was mildly attenuated in the models with NfL (estimate = 0.0110; p value = 0.06) and GFAP (estimate = 0.0111; p value = 0.06). Biomarkers did not modify the association between cognitive activity and cognitive function over time. CONCLUSION: The benefits of cognitive activity on cognition appear to be independent of biomarkers: tau, NfL, and GFAP, measured at baseline. More frequent cognitive activity may benefit the cognitive health of older adults with a wide range of potential disease risk and presentations.

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypotheses that decision making ability declines in old age and that a higher level of cognitive reserve is associated with a reduced rate of decline. METHODS: As part of an ongoing cohort study, 982 older adults without dementia at study enrollment completed measures of purpose in life and cognitive activity which were used as markers of cognitive reserve. At annual intervals thereafter, they completed 6 tests of decision making. RESULTS: In a factor analysis of baseline decision making scores, 3 measures (financial/health literacy, financial/health decision making, scam susceptibility) loaded on an "analytic" factor and 3 (temporal discounting small stakes, temporal discounting large stakes, risk aversion) loaded on a "preferences" (for temporal discounting and avoiding risk) factor. During a mean of 4.7 years of follow-up (standard deviation = 2.9), analytic factor scores decreased (mean = 0.042-unit per year, standard error [SE] = 0.006, p < .001) and preferences factor scores increased (mean = 0.021-unit per year, SE = 0.006, p < .001), with a correlation of 0.13 (p < .001) between rates of change. Evidence of an association between cognitive reserve and decision making was mixed with purpose in life related to change in analytic decision making, whereas past (but not current) cognitive activity was related to change in decision making preferences. DISCUSSION: Decision making analysis and preferences change over time in late life. Change over time in decision making components is relatively independent and differentially related to age and cognitive reserve.

Aging is associated with a decline in cognitive abilities, mainly in memory and executive functioning. A similar but premature deterioration in cognitive capacities is the hallmark of mild cognitive impairment, Alzeimer's disease and dementia. The biochemical mechanisms that cause these neurodegenerative disorders are poorly understood. However, some evidence suggests that insufficient dietary intakes of some phospholipids could impact on brain function and increase the risk of future cognitive impairment and dementia. We evaluated the cognitive and biochemical effects of supplementation with a milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) concentrate in aged rats. We observed that, compared to control animals, MFGM supplemented rats showed enhanced spatial working memory, but both groups exhibited similar reference spatial learning and emotional memory abilities. No significant differences between BDNF levels in the hippocampus and frontal cortex of treated rats as compared to controls were found. The nootropic effects observed were accompanied by significant changes in the lipid composition of synaptic membranes. MFGM supplementation increased the levels of EPA and DHA acids as well as the plasmalogens content in the synaptosomes isolated from the hippocampus (Synapt-HP) and the frontal cortex (Synapt-FC). In addition enhanced levels of phosphatidyl serine (PS), particularly PS(18:1/18:1), and phosphatidyl inositol (PI) molecular species were observed in Synapt-HP and Synapt-FC of treated animals.Lipidomic analysis also revealed greater concentration of phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE) molecular species containing very long-chain fatty acids and PE plasmenyls in Synapt-HP as well as an increase of the SM content in Synapt-FC from the MFGM group. Although further studies are needed to confirm the underlying mechanism (individual or synergistic), these results suggest that MFGM supplementation could be employed as a dietary implement to restore the proper cerebral concentration of some bioactive lipids and prevent or slow the progression of age-related cognitive impairment.

Background: Cognitive and physical activity are important for daily functioning. However, limited research exists on the motivators and barriers associated with older adults participating and adhering to exergame studies that promote physical and cognitive activity. Our objective was to examine older adults' motivators and barriers to joining and completing a three-dimensional exergame study. Methods: Fourteen older adults who participated in the exergame study contributed to one of three focus group discussions. Inductive and deductive methods were used to analyze the qualitative data. Results: Motivators for joining were generativity, peer referrals, self-improvement, and curiosity. Accomplishment, immersion, and exercise were motivators for retention. Participants also cited the structured schedule and adaptive difficulty features as motivators for retention. Barriers to participation included frustration due to lack of level advancement and fatigue/pain during gameplay. Some (n = 3) reported camera tracking issues as a barrier. Unanticipated gender-based trends arose when examining perceptions of the study team's role and motivators for retention. Conclusion: These findings will inform future research strategies for participant recruitment, enrollment, and retention, in addition to providing insights into the design of motivating, enjoyable, and sustainable exergames for older adults.

ABSTRACT

Thalamocortical interaction is a ubiquitous functional motif in the mammalian brain. Previously (Hwang et al., 2021), we reported that lesions to network hubs in the human thalamus are associated with multi-domain behavioral impairments in language, memory, and executive functions. Here, we show how task-evoked thalamic activity is organized to support these broad cognitive abilities. We analyzed functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from human subjects that performed 127 tasks encompassing a broad range of cognitive representations. We first investigated the spatial organization of task-evoked activity and found a basis set of activity patterns evoked to support processing needs of each task. Specifically, the anterior, medial, and posterior-medial thalamus exhibit hub-like activity profiles that are suggestive of broad functional participation. These thalamic task hubs overlapped with network hubs interlinking cortical systems. To further determine the cognitive relevance of thalamic activity and thalamocortical functional connectivity, we built a data-driven thalamocortical model to test whether thalamic activity can be used to predict cortical task activity. The thalamocortical model predicted task-specific cortical activity patterns, and outperformed comparison models built on cortical, hippocampal, and striatal regions. Simulated lesions to low-dimensional, multi-task thalamic hub regions impaired task activity prediction. This simulation result was further supported by profiles of neuropsychological impairments in human patients with focal thalamic lesions. In summary, our results suggest a general organizational principle of how the human thalamocortical system supports cognitive task activity.

We previously showed that both open-loop (beat of a metronome) and closed-loop (phase-dependent tactile feedback) cueing may be similarly effective in reducing Freezing of Gait (FoG), assessed with a quantitative FoG Index, while turning in place in the laboratory in a group of people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite the similar changes on the FoG Index, it is not known whether both cueing responses require attentional control, which would explain FoG Index improvement. The mechanisms underlying cueing responses are poorly understood. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the salience network would predict responsiveness (i.e., FoG Index improvement) to open-loop and closed-loop cueing in people with and without FoG of PD, as salience network contributes to tasks requiring attention to external stimuli in healthy adults. Thirteen people with PD with high-quality imaging data were analyzed to characterize relationships between resting-state MRI functional connectivity and responses to cues. The interaction of the salience network and retrosplenial-temporal networks was the best predictor of responsiveness to open-loop cueing, presenting the largest effect size (d = 1.16). The interaction between the salience network and subcortical as well as cingulo-parietal and subcortical networks were the strongest predictors of responsiveness to closed-loop cueing, presenting the largest effect sizes (d = 1.06 and d = 0.84, respectively). Salience network activity was a common predictor of responsiveness to both cueing, which suggests that auditory and proprioceptive stimuli during turning may require some level of cognitive and insular activity, anchored within the salience network, which explain FoG Index improvements in people with PD.

ABSTRACT

The current study examined moderators of the relationship between depressive symptoms and global neurocognition in a large non-clinical community-dwelling sample spanning adulthood. Participants comprised 5,430 individuals between the ages of 18-99 years drawn from the Virginia Cognitive Aging Project. Depressive symptoms were measured via the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale and neurocognition was operationalized as a composite variable comprising episodic memory, spatial visualization, processing speed, and reasoning tasks. Moderator variables included physical activity, cognitive activity, education, emotional stability, and openness. Hierarchical regressions were used to examine the influence of depressive symptoms and the moderators on neurocognition. Depressive symptoms significantly predicted neurocognition. Cognitive activity, years of education, and emotional stability moderated the depression-neurocognition relationship by buffering the impact of depressive symptoms on neurocognition. Cognitive activity engagement and level of education may function as a protective influence on those with higher levels of depressive symptoms, while emotional stability may be protective for individuals with lower levels of depressive symptoms. No differences in moderation were found across three age groups representing younger, middle, and older adults. Post-hoc analyses showed years of education and openness as moderators in a subsample excluding individuals with potentially clinically meaningful levels of depressive symptoms.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although the pursuit of improved cognitive function through working memory training has been the subject of decades of research, the recent growth in commercial adaptations of classic working memory tasks in the form of gamified apps warrants additional scrutiny. In particular, the emergence of virtual reality as a platform for cognitive training presents opportunities for the use of novel visual features. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to add to the body of knowledge regarding the use of game-like visual design elements by specifically examining the application of two particular visual features common to virtual reality environments: immersive, colorful backgrounds and the use of 3D depth. In addition, electroencephalography (EEG) data were collected to identify potential neural correlates of any observed changes in performance. METHODS: A simple visual working memory task was presented to participants in several game-like adaptations, including the use of colorful, immersive backgrounds and 3D depth. The impact of each adaptation was separately assessed using both EEG and performance assessment outcomes and compared with an unmodified version of the task. RESULTS: Results suggest that although accuracy and reaction time may be slightly affected by the introduction of such game elements, the effects were small and not statistically significant. Changes in EEG power, particularly in the beta and theta rhythms, were significant but failed to correlate with any corresponding changes in performance. Therefore, they may only reflect cognitive changes at the perceptual level. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the data suggest that the addition of these specific visual features to simple cognitive tasks does not appear to significantly affect performance or task-dependent cognitive load.

ABSTRACT

Despite the popularity of Zumba dancing, research is scarce about its impact on older adults. Meanwhile, the integration of cognitive tasks with physical exercises, also known as dual tasking, is an evolving strategy to facilitate activities for older adults. This study investigated the perceptions of persons aged ≥55 years on Zumba and its potential to be incorporated into a dual-task program. We conducted a descriptive-qualitative study involving 44 Filipino older adults. Using content analysis, four themes were identified: moving toward match or mismatch, balancing benefits with burdens, dual tasking as innovative yet potentially challenging, and overcoming barriers with enablers. Although Zumba was perceived as an inclusive and beneficial activity, individual and contextual limitations could hinder its suitability. Moreover, dual tasking in Zumba was considered an innovative approach, although challenges should be addressed to promote its feasibility. Several strategies could enable the design and implementation of age-appropriate Zumba and dual-tasking programs for older adults.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To verify the effects of different modalities of physical exercise on brain activity of older adults. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted according to the PICOS strategy and the following databases were searched: PubMed, Web of Science, PsycInfo and Scielo. Two independent evaluators performed the initial selection from reading the title and abstract based on the stipulated eligibility criteria. RESULTS: The searches resulted in 1935 titles, of which 97 were duplicated and 1793 were excluded based on reading the titles and abstracts. This phase resulted in 45 articles for detailed analysis. At this stage, 35 articles were excluded because they did not meet the eligibility criteria. The information for qualitative analysis was extracted from 10 articles that met the criteria. CONCLUSION: There was improvement in the brain activity of older adults regardless of the type of physical exercise performed (aerobic, neuromuscular, flexibility or neuromotor), but with a discrete advantage for balance and coordination exercises (neuromotor).

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to develop a questionnaire for evaluating total sedentary time (ST) and ST with cognitive activity, and to examine the association between ST and cognitive function among Japanese older adults. The questionnaire to evaluate ST comprised 12 items regarding behavior in specific settings, including 8 items on ST with cognitive activity, in a usual week. Older adults aged ≥75 years who participated in a health check-up assessing cognitive function completed the developed questionnaire and subsequently wore an accelerometer and recorded a diary of ST with cognitive activity for a week as validity measures. Cognitive function was assessed with neuropsychological tests covering 4 domains: memory, attention, executive function, and processing speed. Fifty-two participants were included in the validity analysis. Spearman's correlation coefficient indicated fair-to-good agreement between the questionnaire-measured and the diary-measured time for ST with cognitive activity (r = 0.59, p < 0.001), but this was not the case for total ST. Bland-Altman plots showed that the questionnaire-measured total ST contained proportional bias (r = 0.51, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis (n = 49) showed longer questionnaire-measured ST with cognitive activity was significantly associated with better neuropsychological test scores (attention: ß = -0.38, p = 0.025; executive function: ß = -0.46, p = 0.003; and processing speed: ß = 0.31, p = 0.041), while total ST was not associated with better cognitive performance. The developed questionnaire showed acceptable validity to measure ST with cognitive activity, which was found to be protectively associated with cognitive function.
