ABSTRACT

Education plays a pivotal role in alleviating poverty, driving economic growth, and empowering individuals, thereby significantly influencing societal and personal development. However, the persistent issue of school dropout poses a significant challenge, with its effects extending beyond the individual. While previous research has employed machine learning for dropout classification, these studies often suffer from a short-term focus, relying on data collected only a few years into the study period. This study expanded the modeling horizon by utilizing a 13-year longitudinal dataset, encompassing data from kindergarten to Grade 9. Our methodology incorporated a comprehensive range of parameters, including students' academic and cognitive skills, motivation, behavior, well-being, and officially recorded dropout data. The machine learning models developed in this study demonstrated notable classification ability, achieving a mean area under the curve (AUC) of 0.61 with data up to Grade 6 and an improved AUC of 0.65 with data up to Grade 9. Further data collection and independent correlational and causal analyses are crucial. In future iterations, such models may have the potential to proactively support educators' processes and existing protocols for identifying at-risk students, thereby potentially aiding in the reinvention of student retention and success strategies and ultimately contributing to improved educational outcomes.

ABSTRACT

The Nouhätä! safety education programme has been organised in secondary schools in Finland for over 25 years. However, to date, it has not been systematically evaluated. The purpose of this quantitative survey is to provide information about good practices, benefits and limitations of the NouHätä! Programme; this has been done by answering the research question what variables explain pupils' safety competence after participating in a NouHätä! safety education programme? The results show that the best learning outcomes in safety education are achieved when training is organised in collaboration with teachers and safety experts. Practical training also seems to have a significant impact on the safety competence of pupils. The results suggest that background variables like school success and the sources of safety knowledge affect the level of pupils' safety competence. The results of the study can be used to develop the programme and other safety education programmes for children and young people.

ABSTRACT

The lack of relevant and disaggregated data about schools is a challenge for organizations implementing and funders looking to invest in kindergarten through 12th-grade education programs in New York City (NYC), often forcing organizations to make critical programmatic and financial decisions with only partial or anecdotal information about schools and its existing efforts. Over the last two years, an institution of higher education and a private foundation worked together to address this problem by indexing text in thousands of annual school reports and combining multiple open data sets about schools, including geography, demographics, and academic performance, into a single database. The initial use case focused on understanding the existing computing education efforts in NYC. However, seeing the potential to inform a broader set of questions, the collaborators began exploring the utility of such data with program officers at the foundation. Interviews of program officers around their programmatic needs and challenges illuminated their struggles with analyzing scattered data, difficulty accessing non-academic data and the need for disaggregated and geographical data. These findings are being used to inform the development of a data portal that interfaces with the aggregated dataset for foundations and others interested in data about schools.

ABSTRACT

In the "Tutorial for outline of the healthy China 2030 plan", biomedicine was listed as a key planning and development area. Shanghai government also lists biomedicine as an emerging pillar industry. The rapid development of biomedicine industry put higher requirement for talents. Taking the idea of cross integration, mutually beneficial development, inheritance and innovation, the School of Biotechnology of East China University of Science and Technology organically integrates bioengineering and pharmaceutical majors to develop a new undergraduate engineering program of biomedicine, which specially reforms the talent training practice from the aspects of developing a "trinity teaching" standard system, a "three integration, three convergence" curriculum system, and a "three comprehensive education" innovative talent training system. We put forward the trinity of "value guidance, knowledge system, technology and non-technical core competence literacy" to foster emerging biomedicine engineering talents, and developed a comprehensive innovative talents training mode featured by "covering class-in and class-out, covering every student, and covering ideology and curriculum". Moreover, we established effective connections between courses and training goals, between general education courses and professional courses, and between top-notch talent training systems and training programs. Based on the achievements of teaching reform of the emerging engineering program "intelligent bio-manufacturing", the experience we obtained may provide ideas for development of the first-class bioengineering major in China.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

This article refers to research from a master's thesis in which we analyze the bodily practices developed in full-time education of two public schools, in a non-salvationist perspective, stressing their contributions and mismatches in the lives of students. The expression "to form better people?" questions the reductionist and salvationist conception sometimes found in social programs that use bodily practices, presenting them as a solution to students from the lower classes. We understand in this study that this perspective is changed by the sense of social right and access to different bodily practices as elements of human formation. Full-time education, however, also has limits that sometimes distance it from its perspectives, such as the naturalization of gender issues, curricular fragmentation and different working conditions between teachers and workshop workers. (AU)

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Major streams in mental health nursing in undergraduate nursing programs were introduced in Australia as a strategy to address current and projected workforce shortages. Of the 14 programs originally planned or implemented, only five are continuing. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted involving in-depth interviews with representatives of universities that had ceased the major streams or abandoned plans to introduce them. FINDINGS: Significant themes from interview material on abandoned programs were efficient use of resources, expertise, and problems with registration. On the programs now terminated significant themes were viability and commitment to mental health nursing. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: These findings suggest demonstrable and sustainable commitment to mental health nursing is a precursor to success of major streams and advancement of the mental health nursing specialty.

ABSTRACT

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the perspectives of nursing directors in mental health in Queensland, Australia, regarding the skills and attributes of graduates of comprehensive nursing programme to provide an industry perspective and thus augment knowledge from theoretical and professional dimensions. BACKGROUND: There is a worldwide shortage of appropriately qualified nurses with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to work effectively in mental health services. Within Australia, this has been well documented since the introduction of comprehensive nursing education. The underrepresentation of mental health content in undergraduate curricula has been identified as the primary reason for nursing graduates not being adequately prepared for practice in this field. To date, this issue has primarily been addressed from the perspective of university academics, with the voice of industry relatively silent in the published literature. DESIGN: Qualitative exploratory. METHOD: In-depth telephone interviews with Director of Nursing (Mental Health) in Queensland, Australia. RESULTS: The concerns of participants were expressed in six main themes: (1) foundational knowledge of mental health and disorders, (2) recovery-oriented skills, (3) physical as well as mental health skills, (4) therapeutic strategies, (5) resilience and self-development and (6) advanced knowledge and skills. CONCLUSIONS: The education of comprehensive nursing education needs to be reviewed as a matter of priority to ensure graduates with the attributes required to provide high-quality care for consumers of mental health services. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: A skilled and knowledgeable workforce is an essential component of high-quality mental health services. Research highlighting the current deficits and issues is therefore of the highest priority.

ABSTRACT

Autism researchers have identified a common set of practices that form the basis of quality programming in ASD yet little is known regarding the implementation of these practices in community settings. The purpose of this paper was to outline an Evaluation Framework for use in evaluating ASD programmes of education that will provide valuable information as to the sensitivity of programmes to best practice, establish how programmes are operating and the programme effect on students and their families. The move towards more rigorous evaluation will provide quality information as to the degree of adoption of research led practices in the community setting which heretofore has been largely unavailable.
