ABSTRACT

Abstract The breeding of rabbits contributes to obtaining animal protein and generating income from the sale of this species. The description and characterization of the production systems of these animals provide valuable information for the design of intervention and improvement plans. The aim of this study was to determine the main variables that influence the heterogeneity of the rabbit production systems in the Ciego de Ávila municipality, Cuba. The sample consisted of 49 farms. Quantitative data on productive, reproductive and social indicators were obtained through factor analysis using principal components (PC). The factor scores of each case were calculated, in each PC, and descriptive statistics of the indicators measured. In the conditions of the studied territory, the efficiency was determined by 6 PC that explained 77.6 % of the variance: 1) size of the herd and forage areas; 2) reproductive behavior; 3) age of the producer and reproductive management; 4) mortality; 5) age at weaning and age at slaughter and 6) number of mounts to gestate the breeders. The characterization from the use of PC, and the factor index for each case study in each PC, serve as the basis for interpreting the great existing heterogeneity in the indicators studied, as well as their similarity. It also contributes to defining relationships and behaviors in the characterization of rabbit farms in this region, which will allow the implementation of productive improvement plans.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Carpolobia lutea root extract (CLRE) has been reported to enhance penile erection. However, the mechanism involved is poorly understood. We investigated in vitro mechanisms of CLRE action on contractile activity of rabbit corpus cavernosum (CC). METHODS: Corpus cavernosum strips from four healthy male New Zealand rabbits (2.5-3.0kg) were mounted on an organ chamber and contracted with phenylephrine (PE) (10-9 to 10-5M) and Potassium Chloride (KCl) (10-50mM) before treatment with various concentrations of CLRE (0.1-1.2mg/ml). Interactions between CLRE and a Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) inhibitor (N-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester - l-NAME 10-4M); guanylyl cyclase inhibitors (Oxalodiazolo 4,3-a quinoxalin-1-one - ODQ 10µM, 20µM, 30µM), and (methylene blue 10-30µM); a cyclooxygenase inhibitor (10-4M indomethacin); potassium-channel inhibitors (100µM tetraethyl ammonium TEA), (100ηM apamin) and (glibenclamide 10µM and 20µM); and a calcium-channel inhibitor (-10-4M nifedipine) were investigated. RESULTS: Maximal contractions of KCl and PE contracted CC strips were significantly reduced in a concentration-dependent manner (40.8±3.6% and 38.6±4.0% from 64.6±2.9% and 98.1±4.2% respectively). Relaxant effect of CLRE was significantly reduced by ODQ (38.6±4.0% to 6.4±1.3% and 38.6±4.0% to 7.2±1.2%), nifedipine (38.6±4.0% to 21.1±2.7%) and glibenclamide (40.8±3.6% to 31.5±3.3%). However l-NAME, indomethacin, methylene blue, TEA and apamin did not inhibit relaxation by CLRE. CONCLUSION: Concentration-dependent relaxant effect of CLRE in rabbit CC involves the soluble guanylate cyclase/cyclase Guanosine Monophosphate system, and activation of ATP-dependent K+ channels.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The digestive physiology and reproductive capacity of the rabbit make it a species with potential for meat production. In a temperate climate, its adequate reproductive management allows to obtain between 6 and 10 annual litters per female with 6 up to 12 kits per litter. In tropical areas, heat stress alters metabolism and hormonal function, decreasing their reproductive capacity. In females, the main changes include an increase in the secretion of corticosteroids, modifying the secretion of gonadotropinreleasing hormone (GnRH), stimulating follicle hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), decreasing the growth and follicular development, oocyte quality and ovulation, and with it the number of births and size of litter. In males, libido and ability to mate are affected. In the seminal quality, a decrease of 7.8 % in volume, 7.7 % in concentration, 1.7 % in morphology and 5.5 % in motility is observed. The objective of the present work was to describe the strategies used to reduce the caloric stress. These included regulating the temperature in the facilities, supplementary food, crossing of local breeds with improved breeds, development of genetic lines for tropical climates, implementation of reproductive biotechnologies such as artificial insemination or cryopreservation of semen, improving the reproductive behavior of the rabbit under tropical conditions.

ABSTRACT

In close reproductive lines of rabbits reared in discrete generations, there is a strong association between the year-season (AE) and the levels of consanguinity (F). Previous studies have shown that when AE and F were considered as fixed effects in a model, the heritability and the genetic tendency were overestimated. The objective of this work was to investigate the consequences of considering AE as either a fixed (M1) or random (M2) effect on the selection of animals. A total of 15,671 records corresponding to the number of rabbits weaned in line A, from the Department of Animal Science of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, were used. The comparison of models was based on the rankings of the estimated additive genetic values in each generation and the expected response to the selection. Six scenarios were proposed, varying in selection intensities. In each one, the Spearman correlation was estimated and the percentage of discordance (D) between the animals chosen for M2 but not for M1 was calculated. The response to selection for the animals chosen by either M1 or M2, was estimated as the slope of the regression line between the means of the genetic values predicted by M2 through generations. As the selection pressure decreased, the Spearman correlations increased, decreasing the D. However, at the generation level, both estimators did not always maintain that relationship. The estimated responses to selection were similar when the selection was based on estimated breeding values obtained by using either M1 or M2. Therefore, no differences are expected between both models with respect to selection.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Prolonged tracheal intubation can cause stenosis. In extensive lesions, they have performed transplants or prosthesis placement without good results. Transplantation frequently evolves with necrosis, delayed healing, and ischemia. The anterior segment of the tracheal wall was transplanted to preserve the vascular supply of the trachea. Objectives. Verify that the transplant of a previous patch of the trachea, allows to expand the tracheal lumen in its anterior part and overcome the problems derived from the complete transplant or the insertion of prosthesis and evaluate the viability, macroscopic and microscopic changes of the transplant in two groups of rabbits, one of which will receive treatment with immunosuppressants. Methods. Experimental, prospective, randomized and controlled study. We used 15 rabbits of exocriated strains. In 5, autotransplantation was performed to standardize the surgical technique. In 10, an alotransplant of the anterior wall of the trachea was performed, 5 of which were administered ciclosporin. Euthanasia was performed 15 days postoperatively, for macro and microscopic study. Results. All rabbits evolved satisfactorily. There was no significant difference between those who received immunosuppression and those who did not receive it, when loss of epithelium, granulation tissue, lymphocyte infiltration and fibroproliferation was evaluated. If there was luminal occlusion due to inflammatory causes. When evaluating vascular hyalinosis, vascular stricture, endothelitis and lymphangiectasis there was no significant difference. In none was tissue necrosis found. There were numerous permeable capillaries in the transplanted segment and conservation of the epithelium. Conclusions. The segmental transplantation of the anterior wall of the trachea allowed to enlarge the tracheal lumen with vascular preservation of the graft and good viability, macro and microscopic. Postoperative evolution was good in both groups.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective. The dermatophytes are keratinophilic fungi, of importance in public health because of their anthropozoophilic nature. Given the increasing acquisition of exotic animals as pets and the scarce studies on the state of colonization by dermatophytes on these animals; we raised the objective of determine the presence of dermatophytes in clinically healthy rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) from pet stores in Santiago, Chile. Materials and Methods. 42 clinically healthy rabbits were studied. Clinical specimens were obtained from the hairy mantle and cultivated on Sabouraud glucose agar and dermatophyte test medium (DTM™); the identification of the fungal isolates was performed using classic mycological procedures that included direct microscopic examination and the analysis of micromorphological features on culture. Results. Of the total number of rabbits studied, three (7.1%) presented colonization by dermatophytes, being more frequent in males and in those animals that coexisted with Guinea Pigs. The species identified in all three cases was Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Conclusions. This study evidence colonization by dermatophytes in domestic rabbits, important information for veterinarians and owners of pets, at the time of being in contact with this animal species.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: The material placed into the nest should provide comfort to both does and their kits. Objective: To evaluate the effect of different nesting materials on rabbit doe performance and nest building. Methods: Thirty primiparous rabbit does were randomized allotted in a block design with three treatments and ten replicates each. The treatments consisted of nest bedding with wood shavings (280 g, control), Tifton hay (220 g), and thin strips of newspaper (200 g). The state of the nest was assessed to evaluate mixing of the material with doe's hair and preservation of the original material. Kit body weight, daily weight gain, and survival rate were evaluated from birth to weaning. Results: The nesting material did not affect the mixing level of material and hair, amount of hair in the nest, body weight, daily weight gain, or survival rate of rabbits from birth to 35 d of age (p>0.05). However, preservation of original material in the nest was lower when Tifton hay was used (p<0.05). Correlations between material type and total number of born alive and the amount of hair, mixture level between hair and material, and material preservation in the nest were not significant (p>0.05). No correlation (p>0.05) was observed between material preservation and hair presence or mixture level between both. Positive correlation between hair presence and mixture level (p<0.001) was observed. Conclusion: Tifton hay and cut newspaper can be used as nest bedding for pregnant does in replacement of wood shavings, with no negative effects on nest building behavior or kit performance.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To histologically evaluate whether the intravitreal application of memantine produces retinal toxicity in rabbits. METHODS: A cross-sectional design, experimental, descriptive study was performed on 16 eyes of 16 New Zealand rabbits of 3 kg, divided in 4 groups of 4 rabbits. A dose of 70 ng/ml of intravitreal memantine was administered in Group A, a dose of 150 ng/ml in Group B, a dose of 400 ng/ml in Group C, and Group D received 1 ml of balanced salt solution. The injected eye of half of each group was enucleated 15 days after the injection, and the rest within 30 days after injection. Following enucleation, each eye was placed in 10% formaldehyde. Histopathological analysis was performed on all enucleated eyes. The animals were treated according to the guidelines of the Association for Research on Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). RESULTS: Groups A, B and D did not show any histopathological changes after their enucleation at 15 and 30 days. Group C showed changes in the photoreceptor layer after enucleation at 15 and 30 days. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, it was observed that memantine concentrations at 70 ng/ml and 150 ng/ml are safe when administered intravitreally; however, doses of 400 ng/ml produced retinal structural changes. This research should continue to assess its clinical usefulness.

ABSTRACT

Two groups were formed in order to evaluate the effect of an obesogenic diet on body and liver weight, body fat accumulation and the histometric characteristics of liver and testicles of New Zealand rabbits during the peripuberal period. One group received a standard farm diet and the other received a standard farm diet with canola oil added. During the study, weight of both groups was recorded. At the end of the study, the rabbits were euthanized and liver, testicles, and visceral, scapular and scrotal fat were weighed. Tissue samples were obtained from liver and testicles to carry out histometric analysis. Body weight, body mass index, liver and visceral fat weight were significantly different (P<0.01) in the obesogenic diet when compared to the control group. Notwithstanding, there were no significant differences between both groups in testicular weight, and scapular and scrotal fat (P>0.01). Histometry of the liver of the obesogenic diet group showed the greater total area and greater nucleus area of hepatocytes in the square lobe, right lobe and left lobe medial segment (P<0.01). Histometry of both testicles of individuals from the obesogenic diet group had a greater germinal epithelial thickness and intertubular intersticium (P<0.01). It is concluded that New Zealand male rabbits that received an obesogenic diet during 12 weeks had a higher liver and body weight, as well as, an important increased visceral fat. Furthermore, said diet caused histometric changes in liver and testicles. This set confirms that the domestic rabbit is a good model for the study of the body fat accumulation process associated to the consumption of an obesogenic diet and its effects on liver and testicles.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The study is associated with the effect of aspirin (Acetyl Salicylic Acid) on the microhardness of mineralized tissues of the offspring's teeth, in response to the ingestion of the drug during pregnancy. Aspirin is a widely used analgesic and antipyretic medicine, for symptomatic treatment. Misuse of this drug during pregnancy may instigate developmental defects in offspring. An experimental control study was designed, in which female rabbits were taken as representative mammalian models and treated with aspirin during pregnancy. Their offspring's teeth were used to assess the microhardness of dental tissues. The rabbits were alienated into two groups, treated and control, consisting of seven rabbits in each set (n= 7). Microhardness was evaluated in three types of the sample teeth. The total number of teeth examined were, 2x7x12= 168 samples. Vicker's Hardness degree values were measured and recorded vis-à-vis (50 g for 15 s with 3 indentations per specimen on enamel and dentine separately). The range of hardness obtained was statistically analyzed and the Student's t-tests was applied, with the aid of SPSS version 20. The P-values for both enamel and dentine from maxillary incisors and molars were less than 0.05. The same trend was observed in the mandibular teeth. However, a teratogenicity of Acetyl Salicylic Acid was pragmatic in the recent in vivo studies. Based on the analysis, it was evident that the aspirin administration could produce negative effects leading to reduction in the microhardness of dental tissues of the offsprings.

ABSTRACT

Meniscus alloimplants have been used as a source of tissue for replacement in case of breakage or irreparable damage. To determine possible changes by conservation, the study proposed to geometrically evaluate fresh menisci and menisci preserved in 98% glycerin. 15 medial menisci from eight albino rabbits of New Zealand breed were used, divided into three groups: five fresh menisci (GI); five menisci preserved in 98% glycerin for eight months (GII), and five menisci preserved in 98% glycerin for eight months and then rehydrated in 0.9% saline solution for 24 hours (GIII). All menisci were measured with vernier caliper at seven points of their geometric structure. The study established that there were no statistical differences in the measurements of GII and GIII when compared to GI; there was no difference either in the measurements of GIII when compared to GII, thus rehydration in antibiotic saline solution for 24 hours can be considered unnecessary.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of platelet rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of extensive corneal ulcers in albino rabbits. METHODS: New Zealand rabbits, divided in 3 groups, were used for the study. Corneal ulcers of 10mm diameter were made. Rabbits blood was extracted for the preparation of the PRP of the corresponding group. The blood was processed by differential centrifugation. The first group, named control, was treated with sterile saline every 8h. The second group, named gel, was treated with deproteinized extract gel beef fat every 8h, and the third group, named PRP received one PRP drop on the first and third day of monitoring. The rabbits were monitored, by taking photographs, each day for the 7 days that the study lasted. RESULTS: A better outcome was observed in the group with deproteinized extract gel beef fat (GE group), and the PRP group (PL group), in comparison with the control group (CO group) (P<.05). CONCLUSION: The PRP showed to be just as effective as the commercial product (Solcoseryl®), for the regeneration of the extensive and deep corneal ulcers. Besides, it stands out as a no surgical procedure is required, and there is easy access, low cost and reduced doses.

ABSTRACT

Objective. To assess the capacity in vitro and in vivo of Lactobacillus acidophilus1 isolated in this study, capable of preventing diarrheal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae 01 OGAWA in rabbits newborn. Materials and methods. Lactobacillus acidophilus1 was isolated from faeces of healthy children and was selected from a group of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The better starchy substrate for the growth of the LAB was previously standardized. Using the L. acidophilus1, there was carried out an in vitro and in vivo assay of antagonistic inhibition on the enteropathogen and it was evaluated the prevention of colonization by V. cholerae 01 Ogawa in rabbits newborn. Results. L. acidophilus1 present the better amylolytic capacity, p<0.5 in the ANDEVA. It was found that an inoculum with a cell density of 35x10(6) bacteria/ml in the lactic ferment is able to exert the greatest antagonistic effect in vitro over V. cholerae. The probiotic effect was demonstrated in vivo, since rabbits exposed to the pathogen without having received probiotic had a lower survival probability of 0.25 regarding the group of animals exposed with the pathogen and simultaneously fed with the probiotic whose probability of survival was of 0.95. Conclusions. L. acidophilus1 is considered a probiotic microorganism capable of surviving when passing through the gastrointestinal tract in an animal model and preventing intestinal colonization by V. cholerae 01 Ogawa in rabbits newborn.

ABSTRACT

Objective: to prevent the potential risk of dermal irritability from a cream and a lotion for babies, in order to obtain health registration and to reduce possible health risks. Methods: in vivo predictive bioanalysis of dermal tolerance carried out in rabbits through a qualitative and histopathological clinical exploratory-type study, based on the Lex Artis approach to explain the comparable risk/effectiveness in humans. There was applied the single acute exposure technique (occlusive patch test) in six rabbits to test each product. Dermal effects were then measured in a value scale defining the cosmetic exposure-attributed unsafeness probabilities, according to the dermal toxicity test of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, with some modifications by the authors. Results: the bioanalysis found some dermal irritability in the rabbits' skin after using the single dose of cosmetic for 92 days. The clinical study was supplemented with the histopathological analysis of a sample of irritated skin, without significant changes other than those observed. Conclusions: the clinical and hisopathological analysis showed mild to negligible dermal irritability, which indicates the need for improvements to the formulation of the studied cosmetics in order to obtain the health registration and thus to early advise the manufacturer and the community about the safety and efficacy of products(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective. Comparatively evaluate the effect of supplementing commercial balanced feed (BCF) withmataratón (Gliricidia sepium) foliage and palm-press fiber (Elaeis guineensis) on the bromatologiccomposition of rabbit meat. Materials and methods. The meat samples studied came from a previousresearch which used a randomized block design with three treatments (diets) and three replications(blocks) with three replays by replication sampling where 27 hybrid male rabbits during their postweaning growth period, were used in three treatments: control (T0), animals supplied only with BCF,and two supplemented treatments with mataratón foliage and palm-press fiber at 30 and 10% (T1), and10 and 30% (T2) proportions, respectively, in order to compare the nutritional value of the differentdiets. Results. The evaluation of meat samples from different animals in the treatments showed thatthe bromatological composition of the meat was not significantly affected by the supplementation(p>0.05) for humidity (70.77 to 72.42%), protein (19.08 to 20.34%), ash (1.53 to 1.68%), andlipid (6.48 to 7.23%) contents; indicating that, regardless of the diet used, supplementing CBF withmataraton/palm-press fiber or not, the rabbit meats obtained are nutritionally identical. Conclusions.Based on the results, it is suggested that the foliage of mataraton and palm-press fiber may be analternative, as a tropical agronomic resource, in the rabbit meat production for human consumption.

ABSTRACT

Objective. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effects of Lipofundin 20% on lipid peroxidation markers in the liver of New Zealand white rabbits. Materials and methods. The animals were treated with an intravenous injection (2 ml/kg) of the lipid emulsion during 8 days through the marginal ear vein. At the end of the experiment some lipid peroxidation parameters and lipid profile were tested through spectrophotography. Results. Lipofundin was found to induce a significant (p<0.05) increase of malondialdehyde, total hydroperoxides, and peroxidation potential. Also, high levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL - cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were observed in treated animals compared with the control group (p<0.05). Conclusions. Data proved that Lipofundin induces hepatic lipid peroxidation in rabbits, mainly through a mechanism which involves an induction of hyperlipidemia.
