ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: This paper aimed at observing the impact of dysphonic voice on children's reception of a linguistic message by evaluating their reaction times (RTs) to instructions given by functional dysphonic and control female schoolteachers (STs). METHODS: French minimal pairs such as /muʃ/ ("mouche" fly) versus /buʃ/ ("bouche" mouth) embedded in a carrier sentence "click on the drawing of…" were produced by two groups of 10 dysphonic and control female ST, matched in age and year of experience. The phonemical contrasts observed are voicing, nasality, consonantal place of articulation, vowel roundedness, and vowel place of articulation. The experimentation was presented in the form of a computer game to children from 7 to 10 years old. Two images illustrating the target words were presented, accompanied by the oral instructions recorded by ST. With a two-button box created for the experiment, children had to click as quickly as possible on the image corresponding to the instruction. RESULTS: Our results show that the RTs of all children are affected by the ST's dysphonia, regardless of their age and that they have significantly longer RT when discriminating minimal pairs contrasting in voicing when the instruction is given by a dysphonic speaker compared to the same instruction given by a control speaker. CONCLUSION: These observations could be explained by the fact that functional dysphonia is associated with improper use of the vocal folds and thus an alteration of voicing.

ABSTRACT

In this study, proportional response addition (Prop-RA), a model for predicting response from chemical mixture exposure, is demonstrated and evaluated by statistically analyzing data on all possible binary combinations of the four regulated trihalomethanes (THMs). These THMs were the subject of a multipurpose toxicology study specifically designed to evaluate Prop-RA. The experimental design used a set of doses common to all components and mixtures, providing hepatotoxicity data on the four single THMs and the binary combinations. In Prop-RA, the contribution of each component to mixture toxicity is proportional to its fraction in the mixture based on its response at the total mixture dose. The primary analysis consisted of 160 evaluations. Statistically significant departures from the Prop-RA prediction were found for seven evaluations, with three predications that were greater than and four that were less than the predicted response; interaction magnitudes (n-fold difference in response vs. prediction) ranged from 1.3 to 1.4 for the former and 2.6 to 3.8 for the latter. These predictions support the idea that Prop-RA works best with chemicals where the effective dose ranges overlap. Prop-RA does not assume the similarity of toxic action or independence, but it can be applied to a mixture of components that affect the same organ/system, with perhaps unknown toxic modes of action.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Post-contrast T1-Sampling Perfection with Application-optimized Contrasts using different flip angle Evolutions (SPACE) is the preferred 3D T1 spin-echo sequence for evaluating brain metastases, regardless of the prolonged scan time. PURPOSE: To evaluate the application of accelerated post-contrast T1-SPACE with iterative denoising (ID) for intracranial enhancing lesions in oncologic patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For evaluation of intracranial lesions, 108 patients underwent standard and accelerated T1-SPACE during the same imaging session. Two neuroradiologists evaluated the overall image quality, artifacts, degree of enhancement, mean contrast-to-noise ratiolesion/parenchyma, and number of enhancing lesions for standard and accelerated T1-SPACE without ID. RESULTS: Although there was a significant difference in the overall image quality and mean contrast-to-noise ratiolesion/parenchyma between standard and accelerated T1-SPACE without ID and accelerated SPACE with and without ID, there was no significant difference between standard and accelerated T1-SPACE with ID. Accelerated T1-SPACE showed more artifacts than standard T1-SPACE; however, accelerated T1-SPACE with ID showed significantly fewer artifacts than accelerated T1-SPACE without ID. Accelerated T1-SPACE without ID showed a significantly lower number of enhancing lesions than standard- and accelerated T1-SPACE with ID; however, there was no significant difference between standard and accelerated T1-SPACE with ID, regardless of lesion size. CONCLUSION: Although accelerated T1-SPACE markedly decreased the scan time, it showed lower overall image quality and lesion detectability than the standard T1-SPACE. Application of ID to accelerated T1-SPACE resulted in comparable overall image quality and detection of enhancing lesions in brain parenchyma as standard T1-SPACE. Accelerated T1-SPACE with ID may be a promising replacement for standard T1-SPACE.

ABSTRACT

The current paper introduces the special issue on the Contrast Avoidance Model. The Contrast Avoidance Mmodel theorizes that chronic worriers are afraid of a sharp increase in negative emotion and/or sharp reduction in positive emotion (labeled negative emotional contrasts; NECs). They thus use perseverative thought as means to create and sustain negative emotion to prevent NECs if they were to experience negative events. Further, these individuals are uncomfortable with sustained positive emotion because it leaves them vulnerable to NECs. At the same time, worry increases the probability of positive emotional contrasts (PECs), or sharp increases in positive emotion or decreases in negative emotion when things turn out better than expected or positive events are experienced. Therefore, these individuals generate negative emotion via perseverative thought as a way to avoid NECs and increase the likelihood of PECs. The current special issue provides novel research on the model.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Contrastive learning, a successful form of representational learning, has shown promising results in pretraining deep learning (DL) models for downstream tasks. When working with limited annotation data, as in medical image segmentation tasks, learning domain-specific local representations can further improve the performance of DL models. PURPOSE: In this work, we extend the contrastive learning framework to utilize domain-specific contrast information from unlabeled Magnetic Resonance (MR) images to improve the performance of downstream MR image segmentation tasks in the presence of limited labeled data. METHODS: The contrast in MR images is controlled by underlying tissue properties (e.g., T1 or T2) and image acquisition parameters. We hypothesize that learning to discriminate local representations based on underlying tissue properties should improve subsequent segmentation tasks on MR images. We propose a novel constrained contrastive learning (CCL) strategy that uses tissue-specific information via a constraint map to define positive and negative local neighborhoods for contrastive learning, embedding this information in the representational space during pretraining. For a given MR contrast image, the proposed strategy uses local signal characteristics (constraint map) across a set of related multi-contrast MR images as a surrogate for underlying tissue information. We demonstrate the utility of the approach for downstream: (1) multi-organ segmentation tasks in T2-weighted images where a DL model learns T2 information with constraint maps from a set of 2D multi-echo T2-weighted images (n = 101) and (2) tumor segmentation tasks in multi-parametric images from the public brain tumor segmentation (BraTS) (n = 80) dataset where DL models learn T1 and T2 information from multi-parametric BraTS images. Performance is evaluated on downstream multi-label segmentation tasks with limited data in (1) T2-weighted images of the abdomen from an in-house Radial-T2 (Train/Test = 30/20), (2) public Cartesian-T2 (Train/Test = 6/12) dataset, and (3) multi-parametric MR images from the public brain tumor segmentation dataset (BraTS) (Train/Test = 40/50). The performance of the proposed CCL strategy is compared to state-of-the-art self-supervised contrastive learning techniques. In each task, a model is also trained using all available labeled data for supervised baseline performance. RESULTS: The proposed CCL strategy consistently yielded improved Dice scores, Precision, and Recall metrics, and reduced HD95 values across all segmentation tasks. We also observed performance comparable to the baseline with reduced annotation effort. The t-SNE visualization of features for T2-weighted images demonstrates its ability to embed T2 information in the representational space. On the BraTS dataset, we also observed that using an appropriate multi-contrast space to learn T1+T2, T1, or T2 information during pretraining further improved the performance of tumor segmentation tasks. CONCLUSIONS: Learning to embed tissue-specific information that controls MR image contrast with the proposed constrained contrastive learning improved the performance of DL models on subsequent segmentation tasks compared to conventional self-supervised contrastive learning techniques. The use of such domain-specific local representations could help understand, improve performance, and mitigate the scarcity of labeled data in MR image segmentation tasks.

ABSTRACT

Biological invasions represent an extraordinary opportunity to study evolution. This is because accidental or deliberate species introductions have taken place for centuries across large geographical scales, frequently prompting rapid evolutionary transitions in invasive populations. Until recently, however, the utility of invasions as evolutionary experiments has been hampered by limited information on the makeup of populations that were part of earlier invasion stages. Now, developments in ancient and historical DNA technologies, as well as the quickening pace of digitization for millions of specimens that are housed in herbaria and museums globally, promise to help overcome this obstacle. In this review, we first introduce the types of temporal data that can be used to study invasions, highlighting the timescale captured by each approach and their respective limitations. We then discuss how ancient and historical specimens as well as data available from prior invasion studies can be used to answer questions on mechanisms of (mal)adaptation, rates of evolution, or community-level changes during invasions. By bridging the gap between contemporary and historical invasive populations, temporal data can help us connect pattern to process in invasion science. These data will become increasingly important if invasions are to achieve their full potential as experiments of evolution in nature.

ABSTRACT

Based on the Recognition Concept of species, the specific-mate contact model posits that mating systems develop as combinations of two fundamental courtship strategies that we interpret here in terms of behavioural heterochrony: territorial mate-attraction evolved as an effect of peramorphosis whereas group-living mate-seeking evolved as an effect of paedomorphosis. We tested this hypothesis on primates in a phylogenetic and paleo-climatic context. Our results suggest that primate promiscuity (both males and females are mate-seekers) evolved with group-living from ancestral pair-living monogamy (both males and females are mate-attractors) in the Palaeogene, as the result of a slowdown in growth (neoteny) caused by increased environmental predictability. A secondary return to territorial monogamy probably evolved as the result of accelerated growth driven by seasonality (acceleration). Polygamy evolved in the Neogene during periods of forest fragmentation and environmental unpredictability. Small monogamous ancestors evolved seasonal polyandry (female attraction) as an effect of truncated development (progenesis). Large promiscuous, neotenic ancestors evolved non-seasonal polygyny (male attraction) as an effect of prolonged development (hypermorphosis) in males. We conclude that social heterochrony offers alternative explanations for the coevolution of life history and mating be-haviour; and we discuss the implications of our model for human social evolution.

Aim: The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the existence of uniform sexual dimorphism in some radioulnar contrasts between different finger ridge counts within the same hand in a large set of populations, thus confirming the universal nature of this dimorphism in humans.Subjects and methods: We analysed individual finger ridge counts (10 values on each hand) of both hands from archival sources (mainly the Brehme-Jantz database). In total, these included 4412 adults from 21 population samples covering all permanently inhabited continents and encompassing very different and geographically distant human populations. We calculated the contrasts (differences) of all pairs of ridge counts (45 per hand) and used diverse methods to assess the direction and degree of dimorphism of them across all population samples.Results: The highest sexual dimorphism was observed for nine contrasts involving the ridge count of the dermatoglyphic pattern on the radial side of the second finger of the right hand (R2r). Among these contrasts, we then found four that had the same direction of dimorphism in all 21 populations. The most dimorphic was the contrast R1rR2r - the difference between the ridge count of the radial side of the thumb and the radial side of the index finger.Discussion: Thus, these dermatoglyphic traits can be further investigated as potential markers of prenatal sex differentiation from ca. 10th week of intrauterine development. However, it will be useful to address the detailed factors and mechanisms for differences in the degree of dimorphism of these traits in different populations.

ABSTRACT

Many Aboriginal Australian communities are undergoing language shift from traditional Indigenous languages to contact varieties such as Kriol, an English-lexified Creole. Kriol is reportedly characterised by lexical items with highly variable phonological specifications, and variable implementation of voicing and manner contrasts in obstruents (Sandefur, 1986). A language, such as Kriol, characterised by this unusual degree of variability presents Kriol-acquiring children with a potentially difficult language-learning task, and one which challenges the prevalent theories of acquisition. To examine stop consonant acquisition in this unusual language environment, we present a study of Kriol stop and affricate production, followed by a mispronunciation detection study, with Kriol-speaking children (ages 4-7) from a Northern Territory community where Kriol is the lingua franca. In contrast to previous claims, the results suggest that Kriol-speaking children acquire a stable phonology and lexemes with canonical phonemic specifications, and that English experience would not appear to induce this stability.

ABSTRACT

We are interested in detecting a departure from the baseline in a longitudinal analysis in the context of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). In particular, we are given gene expression reads at two time points for a fixed number of genes and individuals. The individuals can be subdivided into two groups, denoted as groups A and B. Using the two time points, we compute a contrast of gene expression reads per individual and gene. The age of each individual is known and it is used to compute, for each gene separately, a linear regression of the gene expression contrasts on the individual's age. Looking at the intercept of the linear regression to detect a departure from the baseline, we aim to reliably single out those genes for which there is a difference in the intercept among those individuals in group A and not in group B. In this work, we develop testing methodology for this setting based on two hypothesis tests-one under the null and one under an appropriately formulated alternative. We demonstrate the validity of our approach using a dataset created by bootstrapping from a real data application in the context of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS).

Preoperative clinical MRI protocols for gliomas, brain tumors with dismal outcomes due to their infiltrative properties, still rely on conventional structural MRI, which does not deliver information on tumor genotype and is limited in the delineation of diffuse gliomas. The GliMR COST action wants to raise awareness about the state of the art of advanced MRI techniques in gliomas and their possible clinical translation. This review describes current methods, limits, and applications of advanced MRI for the preoperative assessment of glioma, summarizing the level of clinical validation of different techniques. In this second part, we review magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST), susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), MRI-PET, MR elastography (MRE), and MR-based radiomics applications. The first part of this review addresses dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI, arterial spin labeling (ASL), diffusion-weighted MRI, vessel imaging, and magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF). INTRODUCTION: Volumetric turbo spin echo (3D-TSE) T1-weighted imaging techniques such as T1-SPACE (Sampling Perfection with Application optimized Contrasts by using different flip angle Evolutions) improve detection of intracranial metastases (IM) compared to volumetric magnetisation-prepared gradient recalled echo techniques such as MPRAGE (Magnetization-Prepared Rapid Acquisition with Gradient Echo). However, incomplete vascular suppression can produce false positives when using 3D-TSE. Research into 3D-TSE has generally targeted patients with known or suspected IM, but the clinical implications of false positives are greater in patients with lower likelihood of IM. This study examined additional findings identified by T1-SPACE in patients with metastatic melanoma, targeting patients with a lower incidence of IM. METHODS: Patients with metastatic melanoma and an upcoming brain MRI booking were identified prospectively. Consent for adding post-contrast T1-SPACE to the MRI protocol (which included MPRAGE) was obtained. Imaging was initially assessed without T1-SPACE. Subsequently, T1-SPACE images were examined and additional findings identified were recorded, including their correlation with MPRAGE. RESULTS: One hundred examinations were performed, 24 having evidence of active IM. T1-SPACE allowed identification of additional lesions in five patients, including two with small solitary IM not identified when first assessing MPRAGE. In 18 examinations, T1-SPACE identified additional equivocal findings, confidently attributed to artefact (most commonly normal vessels) following correlation with MPRAGE. CONCLUSION: T1-SPACE improves detection of small lesions in patients without known IM, changing patient management. False positives are common but can be clarified with MPRAGE. Combining T1-SPACE and MPRAGE allows both sensitivity and specificity to be optimised.

ABSTRACT

Mediation analysis is widely used to test and inform theory and debate about the mechanism(s) by which causal effects operate, quantitatively operationalized as an indirect effect in a mediation model. Most effects operate through multiple mechanisms simultaneously, and a mediation model is likely to be more realistic when it is specified to capture multiple mechanisms at the same time with the inclusion of more than one mediator in the model. This also allows an investigator to compare indirect effects to each other. After an overview of the mechanics of mediation analysis, we advocate formally comparing indirect effects in models that include more than one mediator, focusing on the important distinction between questions and claims about value (i.e., are two indirect effects the same number?) versus magnitude (i.e., are two indirect effects equidistant from zero or the same in strength?). After discussing the shortcomings of the conventional method for comparing two indirect effects in a multiple mediator model-which only answers a question about magnitude in some circumstances-we introduce several methods that, unlike the conventional approach, always answer questions about difference in magnitude. We illustrate the use of these methods and provide code that implements them in popular software. We end by summarizing simulation findings and recommending which method(s) to prefer when comparing like- and opposite-signed indirect effects.

It is widely accepted that the Japanese language is mora-timed, and the geminate obstruent, one of the three special morae in the Japanese language, forms one independent mora. Many studies have shown that perceiving Japanese geminates accurately is especially problematic for learners of Japanese. This study examines the perception of Japanese singleton and geminate contrasts by Chinese learners of Japanese (CLJ) from different dialectal backgrounds and contrasts their perception with Japanese native speakers (JNS). This study conducted two experiments. First, non-synthesized stimuli were used to test each group of participants' perceptual sensitivity of Japanese singletons and geminates. Second, the categorical perception was accessed by adopting stimuli in which the ratio of constriction duration to entire word duration (CD/EWD) was synthesized from 15 to 60%. Results show that, although learners of Japanese had significantly lower perception levels compared to JNS regardless of their group differences (e.g., L1 background, Japanese language proficiency, etc.), they still experienced some positive transfers of L1 to achieve better perception performance. The results also suggest that CD/EWD can be considered a reliable local cue for both JNS and CLJ in categorizing Japanese singletons and geminates. In addition, the results demonstrate that variables such as medial consonant type and the learner's Japanese proficiency affect the perception of Japanese singleton and geminate contrasts.

ABSTRACT

Visual processing is segregated into ON and OFF channels as early as in the retina, and the superficial (output) layers of the primary visual cortex (V1) are dominated by neurons preferring dark stimuli. However, it is not clear how the timing of neural processing differs between "darks" and "brights" in general, especially in light of psychophysical evidence; it is also equally not clear how subcortical visual pathways that are critical for active orienting represent stimuli of positive (luminance increments) and negative (luminance decrements) contrast polarity. Here, we recorded from all visually-responsive neuron types in the superior colliculus (SC) of two male rhesus macaque monkeys. We presented a disk (0.51° radius) within the response fields (RFs) of neurons, and we varied, across trials, stimulus Weber contrast relative to a gray background. We also varied contrast polarity. There was a large diversity of preferences for darks and brights across the population. However, regardless of individual neural sensitivity, most neurons responded significantly earlier to dark than bright stimuli. This resulted in a dissociation between neural preference and visual response onset latency: a neuron could exhibit a weaker response to a dark stimulus than to a bright stimulus of the same contrast, but it would still have an earlier response to the dark stimulus. Our results highlight an additional candidate visual neural pathway for explaining behavioral differences between the processing of darks and brights, and they demonstrate the importance of temporal aspects in the visual neural code for orienting eye movements.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Objects in our environment, such as birds flying across a bright sky, often project shadows (or images darker than the surround) on our retina. We studied how primate superior colliculus (SC) neurons visually process such dark stimuli. We found that the overall population of SC neurons represented both dark and bright stimuli equally well, as evidenced by a relatively equal distribution of neurons that were either more or less sensitive to darks. However, independent of sensitivity, the great majority of neurons detected dark stimuli earlier than bright stimuli, evidenced by a smaller response latency for the dark stimuli. ABSTRACT

This study explores the difficulties in distinguishing different lexical tone contrasts at both sub-lexical and lexical levels for beginning and advanced Dutch learners of Mandarin, using a sequence-recall task and an auditory lexical decision task. In both tasks, the Tone 2-Tone 3 contrast is most prone to errors for both groups of learners. A significant improvement in the advanced group was found for this tone contrast in the sub-lexical sequence recall task, but not in the lexical decision task. This is taken as evidence that utilizing tones in on-line spoken word recognition is more complex and demanding for L2 learners than in a memory-based task. The results of the lexical decision task also revealed that advanced learners have developed a stronger sensitivity to Tone 1 compared to the other three tones, with Tone 4 showing the least sensitivity. These findings suggest different levels of robustness and distinctiveness for the representation of different lexical tones in L2 learners' lexicon and consequently different levels of proficiency in integrating tones for lexical processing. The observed patterns of difficulty are potentially related to the acoustic characteristics of different lexical tone contrasts as well as to the interference of the suprasegmental features of learner's native language (i.e., the tonal contrasts of Dutch intonation) on the acquisition of the Mandarin lexical tone contrasts.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Natalizumab and fingolimod are used as high-efficacy treatments in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. Several observational studies comparing these two drugs have shown variable results, using different methods to control treatment indication bias and manage censoring. The objective of this empirical study was to elucidate the impact of methods of causal inference on the results of comparative effectiveness studies. METHODS: Data from three observational multiple sclerosis registries (MSBase, the Danish MS Registry and French OFSEP registry) were combined. Four clinical outcomes were studied. Propensity scores were used to match or weigh the compared groups, allowing for estimating average treatment effect for treated or average treatment effect for the entire population. Analyses were conducted both in intention-to-treat and per-protocol frameworks. The impact of the positivity assumption was also assessed. RESULTS: Overall, 5,148 relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients were included. In this well-powered sample, the 95% confidence intervals of the estimates overlapped widely. Propensity scores weighting and propensity scores matching procedures led to consistent results. Some differences were observed between average treatment effect for the entire population and average treatment effect for treated estimates. Intention-to-treat analyses were more conservative than per-protocol analyses. The most pronounced irregularities in outcomes and propensity scores were introduced by violation of the positivity assumption. CONCLUSIONS: This applied study elucidates the influence of methodological decisions on the results of comparative effectiveness studies of treatments for multiple sclerosis. According to our results, there are no material differences between conclusions obtained with propensity scores matching or propensity scores weighting given that a study is sufficiently powered, models are correctly specified and positivity assumption is fulfilled.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Due to surgical advancements, the accurate detection of perineural disease spread has become increasingly important in the management and prognostication of head and neck cancers, though MR evaluation has thus far been limited by technical and logistic challenges. The purpose of this study was to specifically evaluate the relative capability of 3D CISS and 3D T2-SPACE imaging to delineate the proximal intracranial divisions of the normal trigeminal nerve, an area important in determining the resectability of intracranial perineural disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single center HIPAA-compliant, IRB approved retrospective review of 40 patients with clinical temporal bone/internal auditory canal MR imaging was conducted. 20 patients with 3D CISS images and 20 patients with 3D T2-SPACE images met inclusion criteria. Two radiologists scored the sequences on a 3-point scale based on ability to visualize anatomic structures surrounding the trigeminal nerve in Meckel's cave, intracranial trigeminal divisions, skull base neuroforamina, and proximal extracranial mandibular division. RESULTS: The following anatomic locations scored significantly better in the T2-SPACE sequence compared to the CISS sequence for both raters: intracranial V3 (p < .05), foramen ovale (p < .05), and extracranial V3 (p < .01). The average scores for the anterior Meckel's cave and foramen rotundum were higher for the T2-SPACE sequence, although not significantly. Percent interobserver agreement ranged from 50 to 90% and 65-100% for the different anatomic locations on the CISS and T2-SPACE sequences, respectively. CONCLUSION: 3D T2-SPACE was found to be superior to 3D CISS in the evaluation of the distal intracranial and extracranial portions of the normal trigeminal nerve.

ABSTRACT

How could individual differences in processing non-speech acoustic signals influence their cue weighting strategies for L2 speech contrasts? The present study investigated this question by testing forty L1 Chinese-L2 English listeners with two tasks: one for testing the listeners' sensitivity to pitch and temporal information of non-speech acoustic signals; the other for testing their cue weighting (VOT, F0) strategies for distinguishing voicing contrasts in English stop consonants. The results showed that the more sensitive the listeners were to temporal differences of non-speech acoustic signals, the more they relied on VOT to differentiate between the voicing contrasts in English stop consonants. No such association was found between listeners' differences in sensitivity to pitch changes of non-speech acoustic signals and their reliance on F0 to cue the voicing contrasts. The results could shed light on the different processing mechanisms for pitch and temporal information of acoustic signals.
