ABSTRACT

The clinical syndrome caused by cleavage-resistant RIPK1 is known as CRIA (Cleavage-resistant RIPK1-induced autoinflammatory) syndrome. We present a family with three generations affected by CRIA syndrome. Our index patient (P1), a boy born of a non-consanguineous marriage, developed recurrent episodes of fever after 5 months of age, with variable periodicity. His father (P2) and paternal grandmother also had periodic fever. At 23 months of age, P1 was diagnosed with renal biopsy-proven steroid-responsive nephrotic syndrome. His first visit to our center was at 2 years of age. At presentation, he had failure to thrive, microcytic hypochromic anemia, and elevated inflammatory markers and interleukin-6 levels. Amyloid A protein was elevated, serum creatinine was normal, and proteinuria resolved after addition of steroids. Next-generation sequencing showed heterozygous mutation (c.970G>A, p.Asp324His) in RIPK1. This mutation has been reported to cause CRIA syndrome. P2 and P1's asymptomatic younger brother had the same mutation. All the affected members showed variability with respect to frequency and duration of periodic fever as well as the age of onset. Both P1 and P2 had elevated amyloid A, with no evidence of renal dysfunction. P1 and P2 showed improvement in the intensity of fever spikes with colchicine treatment; however, both continue to have periodic fever.

ABSTRACT

Restoration is accelerating to reverse global declines of key habitats and recover lost ecosystem functions, particularly in coastal ecosystems. However, there is high uncertainty about the long-term capacity of restored ecosystems to provide habitat and increase biodiversity and the degree to which these ecosystem services are mediated by spatial and temporal environmental variability. We addressed these gaps by sampling fishes biannually for 5-7 years (2012-2018) at 16 sites inside and outside a rapidly expanding restored seagrass meadow in coastal Virginia (USA). Despite substantial among-year variation in abundance and species composition, seine catches in restored seagrass beds were consistently larger (6.4 times more fish, p < 0.001) and more speciose (2.6 times greater species richness, p < 0.001; 3.1 times greater Hill-Shannon diversity, p = 0.03) than seine catches in adjacent unvegetated areas. Catches were particularly larger during summer than autumn (p < 0.01). Structural equation modeling revealed that depth and water residence time interacted to control seagrass presence, leading to higher fish abundance and richness in shallow, well-flushed areas that supported seagrass. Together, our results indicate that seagrass restoration yields large and consistent benefits for many coastal fishes, but that restoration and its benefits are sensitive to the dynamic seascapes in which restoration is conducted. Consideration of how seascape-scale environmental variability affects the success of habitat restoration and subsequent ecosystem function will improve restoration outcomes and the provisioning of ecosystem services.


Efectos de la restauración de pastos marinos sobre la abundancia y diversidad de peces costeros Resumen La restauración ecológica está acelerándose para revertir la declinación mundial de hábitats importantes y para recuperar las funciones ambientales perdidas, particularmente en los ecosistemas costeros. Sin embargo, hay una gran incertidumbre en cuanto a la capacidad a largo plazo que tienen los ecosistemas restaurados de proporcionar hábitats e incrementar la biodiversidad y el grado al que estos servicios ambientales están mediados por la variabilidad ambiental espacial y temporal. Abordamos estos vacíos mediante el muestreo bianual de peces durante 5-7 años (2012-2018) en 16 sitios dentro y fuera de una pradera restaurada de pastos marinos con expansión acelerada en la costa de Virginia (E.U.A.). A pesar de la variación sustancial anual en abundancia y composición de especies, la captura de cerco en los lechos de pastos marinos restaurados fue mayor (6.4 veces más peces, p< 0.001) y con más especies (2.6 veces mayor riqueza de especies, p< 0.001; 3.1 veces mayor diversidad Hill-Shannon, p= 0.03) que la captura de cerco en las áreas aledañas sin vegetación. En particular, las capturas fueron mayores durante el verano que durante el otoño (p < 0.01). Los modelos de ecuaciones estructurales revelaron que la profundidad y el tiempo de residencia acuática interactúan para controlar la presencia de los pastos marinos, lo que resulta en una mayor abundancia y riqueza de peces en áreas someras con buena circulación que fomentan los pastos marinos. En conjunto, nuestros resultados indican que la restauración de los pastos marinos produce grandes beneficios constantes para muchos peces costeros, pero también que la restauración y sus beneficios son sensibles a la dinámica marina en la que se realiza la restauración. Si se considera cómo la variabilidad ambiental a escala de paisaje afecta el éxito de la restauración del hábitat y la función ambiental subsecuente, entonces mejorarán los resultados de restauración y el suministro de servicios ambientales.

Resumen El abuso y mal uso de los antimicrobianos aceleró la propagación de bacterias resistentes. La asociación entre las infecciones que presentan resistencia a antimicrobianos (RAM) en humanos y el uso de antimicrobianos en la producción agropecuaria es compleja, pero está bien documentada. Proporcionamos una revisión sistemática y metaanálisis sobre la diseminación de la resistencia a antimicrobianos designados como críticamente importantes por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) en cerdos, aves y bovinos de producción intensiva y extensiva en Argentina. Se buscó información en bases de datos electrónicas (Medline-PubMed, Web of Science, SciELO, Sistema Nacional de Repositorios Digitales de Argentina) y en la literatura gris. Se incluyeron estudios epidemiológicos sobre la RAM en las principales bacterias transmitidas por los alimentos - Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., Escherichia coli y Enterococcus spp. - y bacterias causantes de mastitis aisladas de cerdos, pollos y bovinos. Los resultados de este estudio apoyan la hipótesis de que la RAM de las bacterias transmitidas por los alimentos alcanza niveles alarmantes. Los metaanálisis seguidos de análisis por subgrupos mostraron asociación entre la RAM y (a) el animal (p<0,01) para estreptomicina, ampicilina y tetraciclina o (b) el sistema productivo (p<0,05) para estreptomicina, cefotaxima, ampicilina, ácido nalidíxico y tetraciclina. La mayor prevalencia conjunta de multirresistencia se detectó en cerdos (0,47 [0,29; 0,66]) y producción intensiva (0,62 [0,34; 0,83]), mientras que la menor correspondió a bovinos de leche (0,056 [0,003; 0,524]) y producción extensiva (0,107 [0,043; 0,240]). Se observó un vacío de información respecto de los bovinos de feedlot. Es urgente adoptar medidas políticas para coordinar y armonizar la vigilancia de la RAM y regular el uso de antimicrobianos en animales.

ABSTRACT

RESUMEN La displasia de cadera canina o displasia coxo-femoral (DCF) es un desorden progresivo e incapacitante en perros de razas grandes, como el Ovejero Alemán. La selección de reproductores libres de displasia es la única forma de reducir su incidencia. Se han desarrollado varios métodos de diagnóstico basados en el examen radiográfico, en base a los cuales se seleccionan los reproductores para la cría. La DCF tiene una base hereditaria poligénica e influencia ambiental, con una heredabilidad media a baja (alrededor de 0,20 a 0,40), por lo que el progreso de la selección fenotípica ha sido lento. En Argentina la prevalencia de la displasia en la raza sigue siendo alta (>25%) y es imposible prever su incidencia en la progenie del plantel de cría. Algunos países han implementado la selección basada en el valor estimado de cría, obteniendo un importante avance. Los estudios de asociación del genoma completo han revelado numerosos marcadores asociados a la DCF y se han encontrado varios genes candidatos que señalan la posibilidad de implementar una selección genómica en un futuro cercano.


ABSTRACT Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is a progressive and disabling disorder in large dog breeds, such as the German Shepherd dog. Breeding sires and dams free of dysplasia is the only way to reduce its incidence. Several diagnostic methods have been developed based on radiographic examination, on the basis of which dogs are selected for breeding. CHD has a polygenic hereditary basis and environmental influence, with a median to low heritability (ca. 0,20 to 0,40), so the progress in phenotypic selection has been slow. In Argentina, the prevalence of dysplasia in German Shepherd dogs remains high (> 25%) and it is impossible to predict its incidence in the offspring of the breeding stock. Some countries have implemented a selection based on the estimated breeding value, obtaining an important advance. Genomewide association studies have revealed numerous CHD-associated markers and several candidate genes have been found that point to the possibility of implementing genomic selection in the near future.

ABSTRACT

The profitability of alpaca breeding depends on satisfactory reproductive results. The study aimed to analyze the frequency and causes of reproduction-related problems in alpacas, in particular miscarriages, stillbirths, preterm births, twin pregnancies, and falls of crias within 12 months after birth. This analysis was carried out with the use of questionnaires completed voluntarily by 109 alpaca owners in three regions (British Isles, Continental Europe, and North America). Cases of miscarriage and stillbirths were reported from 44% and 36% of the farms, respectively. In half of the farms, the cases of falls of crias and young alpacas within 12 months after birth were reported. Preterm births were reported from almost half of the farms. A large number of alpaca owners did not identify the cause of fetal death. An important element increasing the cria survival rate of is the birth weight (the higher cria birth weight, the lower risk of perinatal complications and less necessity of bottle feeding). Crias from dams receiving mineral supplements had higher birth weight. This study indicated a relationship between fetal death and the occurrence of infectious diseases and scabies infestation in the herd. They may be potential causes of reproduction-related problems that are not discerned in time.

ABSTRACT

Autoinflammatory diseases related to RIPK1 mutations have been recently described. Two distinct clinical phenotypes have been reported and depend on the type and location of the mutation. When the mutation is recessive with loss of function, patients develop a combined phenotype of immune deficiency with recurrent bacterial and fungal infections and signs of early inflammatory bowel disease, non-erosive polyarthritis and growth retardation. On the other hand, when the mutation is dominant, gain of function, the manifestations are only auto-inflammatory with extensive lymphoproliferation, oral lesions such as aphthosis or ulcers, abdominal pain and hepatosplenomegaly. The mutations described for the dominant form affect only the cleavage site of caspase 8 and the clinical phenotype is called CRIA for Cleavage-Resistant RIPK1-Induced Autoinflammatory syndrome. The recessive form is severe and life-threatening requiring hematopoietic stem cell transplantation while the dominant form responds well to interleukin-6 receptor antagonists. Thus, RIPK1 mutations can induce various clinical manifestations with two distinct phenotypes. Although still rare, because of their recent description, these diseases can be suspected by an internist, in front of recurrent digestive features and will be increasingly diagnosed in the future through the integration of this gene in the diagnostic chips dedicated to autoinflammatory diseases and early inflammatory bowel diseases, using next generation sequencing.

Introducción: el impacto de la resistencia antimicrobiana (RAM) generará un aumento de las muertes relacionadas de 10 millones anuales hacia 2050. El 70% de la dispensación de antimicrobianos (ATB) se utiliza en la agroveterinaria y no en salud humana. Es fundamental conocer la portación de RAM en trabajadores de cría de animales y en los animales, para acciones tempranas de salud pública. Métodos: bajo metodología PRISMA se realizó la búsqueda bibliográfica en distintas fuentes disponibles hasta octubre de 2020. Se priorizaron revisiones sistemáticas, metanálisis, ensayos clínicos y estudios observacionales para determinar la RAM en trabajadores de cría de cerdos. De 990 artículos identificados se incluyeron 8 estudios. Resultados: la tasa de colonización por Staphylococcus aureus resistente a la meticilina (SAMR) en trabajadores fue mayor que la de la población general. La prevalencia de SAMR fue significativamente mayor en trabajadores en contacto directo con animales y los de granjas de cría intensiva con respecto a los de extensiva. En cerdos, la prevalencia de RAM en cría intensiva fue significativamente mayor que la de los de cría extensiva. También fue significativa la asociación entre el suministro de antibióticos en la cría intensiva y la presencia de RAM. Las granjas de más de 1250 cerdos presentaron mayor prevalencia de RAM (p < 0,001). El fenotipo de SAMR en cerdos, trabajadores y el ambiente fue el mismo. Conclusiones: existe evidencia de asociación entre la producción agrícola de cría intensiva y la RAM en cerdos y trabajadores. No se encontraron estudios de vigilancia epidemiológica en la Argentina en trabajadores de cría de animales. (AU)


Introduction: it is estimated that the impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will generate an increase of 10 million deaths by 2050, being reflected to a greater extent in low-income countries. 70% of the annual use of antimicrobials is concentrated in agroveterinary but not in human health. Considering the presence of AMR in ranchers and agricultural workers is essential for early public health actions. Methods: using the PRISMA methodology, bibliography was searched in different sources until October 2020. Systematic reviews, meta-analyses, clinical trials and observational studies were prioritized to determine AMR in pig workers. Eight studies of the 990 found have been included. Results: the rate of colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in farming workers was higher than the general population. MRSA prevalence was significantly higher in workers who reported direct contact with animals. And also in those workers of intensive farms compared to those of extensive farms. The same situation is observed in swines, in which the prevalence of AMR in intensive farming was significantly higher than in extensive farming. The association between the supply of antibiotics in intensive farming workers and the presence of AMR was also significant. Farms with more than 1,250 swines had a higher prevalence of AMR (p<0.001). The MRSA phenotype found in swine, agricultural workers, and the environment was the same. Conclusions: there is scientific evidence of an association between agricultural production in intensive livestock farming and AMR in swine and farming workers. There aren't Argentine studies of epidemiological surveillance in farming workers. (AU)

Resumen En la actualidad, criar perros requiere una aproximación competente y con base científica. En particular, la elección del momento óptimo de inseminación (tanto natural como artificial) es uno de los factores más importantes para el éxito en el apareamiento o inseminación de perras, y es crucial para problemas de infertilidad. El período de fertilización (tiempo en el cual los ovocitos pueden ser fertilizados) es de 2 a 5 días luego de la ovulación. Por ende, la cópula debería realizarse inmediatamente antes o durante este período. El momento óptimo puede determinarse utilizando varios métodos que estiman el período de fertilidad (cuando la cópula/inseminación tiene máximas chances de concepción). Sin embargo, ninguna de las técnicas diagnósticas es absolutamente confiable, por lo que para un resultado lo más certero posible se recomienda sar varios (dos o tres) estudios. Por ejemplo: contar los días, examen de descarga vulvar y vaginal sumado a frotis y/o vaginoscopía. La cópula control incrementa las chances de concepción, y debe realizarse el día después de la primera cópula. Debe considerarse que el momento de ovulación en la misma perra en distintos celos puede ser diferente. Para perras con problemas de concepción debe usarse el máximo número de métodos con un análisis de intentos pasados fallidos o exitosos. La elección de un método específico implica un aspecto económico, tal como cuando el propietario debe trasladar la perra una larga distancia y necesitan saber la fecha exacta de ovulación.


Abstract Nowadays, breeding dogs requires a competent, science-based approach. In particular, the choice of the optimal insemination time (both natural and artificial) is one of the important factors of successful mating or artificial insemination of bitches and is crucial in the problem of infertility. The period of fertilization (the time when ovicells can be fertilized) is 2-5 days after ovulation. Therefore, mating should be performed immediately before or during this period. The optimal time can be determied using various methods that estimate the period of fertility (when mating/inseminación can lead to conception). However, none of the diagnostic techniques is absolutely reliable, so for the most accurate result, it is recommended to use several (two or three) studies. For example: counting days, assessment of vulvar and vaginal discharge plus smear and/or vaginoscopy. Control mating increases the probability of conception and is usually performed the day after the first mating. It should be considered that the time of ovulation in the same bitch during different heat can be different. For bitches with problems of conception use the maximum number of methods with the analysis of past successful and unsuccessful matings. Choosing a specific method also implies an economic aspect, such as when owners have to carry bitches for a long distance and they need to be sure of the exact date of ovulation.

ABSTRACT

Parasites of the genus Eimeria are involved in the neonatal diarrhea complex of alpaca (Vicugna pacos) crias, and infection by Eimeria is commonly known as coccidiosis. There are limited reports of these protozoa in clinically asymptomatic crias. In this study, fecal samples from 78 clinically asymptomatic alpaca crias were analyzed to evaluate the prevalence, parasitological load, and diversity of Eimeria species. This study was conducted in the Quenamari community located in the Peruvian Andes (Marangani, Cuzco) at 4500 m above sea level. All fecal samples were examined for parasites using the quantitative McMaster and modified Stoll techniques. Microscopic examination showed the presence of Eimeria oocysts in 68 out of the 78 samples (87.18%). Among the 78 samples we found E. lamae in 67 (85.90%), E. punoensis in 49 (62.82%), E. alpacae in 42 (53.85%), E. macusaniensis in 32 (41.03%), and E. ivitaensis in four (5.13%). Regarding parasitized crias, overall there was a mean parasitological load of 43,920 oocysts per gram of feces (OPG). Eimeria lamae had the highest parasitological load (mean 206,600 OPG). These findings could be due to environmental contamination with oocysts of different Eimeria species. Additional research is needed to determine if this burden of coccidiosis could produce subclinical impacts to the health of alpaca crias.

RIPK1 (receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase 1) is a key molecule for mediating apoptosis, necroptosis, and inflammatory pathways downstream of death receptors (DRs) and pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). RIPK1 functions are regulated by multiple post-translational modifications (PTMs), including ubiquitination, phosphorylation, and the caspase-8-mediated cleavage. Dysregulation of these modifications leads to an immune deficiency or a hyperinflammatory disease in humans. Over the last decades, numerous studies on the RIPK1 function in model organisms have provided insights into the molecular mechanisms of RIPK1 role in the maintenance of immune homeostasis. However, the physiological role of RIPK1 in the regulation of cell survival and cell death signaling in humans remained elusive. Recently, RIPK1 loss-of-function (LoF) mutations and cleavage-deficient mutations have been identified in humans. This review discusses the molecular pathogenesis of RIPK1-deficiency and cleavage-resistant RIPK1 induced autoinflammatory (CRIA) disorders and summarizes the clinical manifestations of respective diseases to help with the identification of new patients.

ABSTRACT

Two juvenile alpacas, 1 male and 1 female, were presented for evaluation of grade V/VI bilateral basilar systolic heart murmurs. Both animals were ultimately diagnosed with severe valvular pulmonic stenosis and a small ventricular septal defect. Transvenous balloon valvuloplasty was performed in each animal using methods described in the dog. A double balloon technique was employed in the first case, with a balloon-annulus ratio of ~1.55. For the second case, a high-pressure dilatation balloon catheter with a balloon-annulus ratio of ~1.33 was selected. Experience with both procedures indicates that balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty is technically feasible in alpacas using techniques extrapolated from those used in dogs. Furthermore, accepted criteria for procedural success were fulfilled for both alpacas, with more than a 50% reduction in the echocardiographically derived transpulmonic pressure gradient after intervention.

Abstract Background: Preserving the genetic diversity of wild fish is an important consideration for restocking programs, as inbreeding can compromise progeny survival as well as impact the resilience of natural populations. Objective: To evaluate the influence of spawning method: semi-natural (SN) or strip-spawning (ST), and the number of breeders (1♀:3♂ and 2♀:6♂) on the reproductive efficiency and genetic diversity of B. orbignyanus progeny destined for restoration of wild stocks. Methods: Rates of fertilization, hatching and broodfish mortality were recorded. For genetic evaluations (allele frequency, observed and expected heterozygosity, Shannon index, inbreeding coefficient, molecular variance analysis, and genetic differentiation), breeders (n=24), and their progenies (90 larvae/treatment) were sampled and analyzed using eight microsatellite markers. Results: Higher fertilization and hatching rates, and lower broodfish mortality were observed for the SN method (p<0.05), whereas the number of breeders did not affect these parameters (p>0.05). Interaction between spawning method and number of breeders was not significant (p>0.05). The amplified microsatellite loci produced a total of 30 alleles, with sizes between 80 and 225 bp and their frequencies indicated an increase (p<0.05) of genetic diversity in the progenies, but low genetic differentiation between treatments (p>0.05). Conclusion: The spawning methods and number of breeders tested increased equally the genetic diversity of the progeny, with low genetic differentiation between treatments. In contrast, rates of fertilization, hatching and brood fish mortality revealed that the SN method resulted in the best reproductive efficiency due to the handling stress and injuries caused by ST. Thus, SN proves to be the most suitable spawning-method for B. orbignyanus in restocking programs.


Resumen Antecedentes: Mantener la diversidad genética de los peces salvajes es una consideración importante para los programas de repoblación, ya que la endogamia puede comprometer la supervivencia de la progenie y afectar la supervivencia de las poblaciones naturales. Objetivo: Evaluar la influencia del método de desove (seminatural - SN o en franjas - ST) y el número de reproductores (1♀:3♂ y 2♀:6♂) sobre la eficiencia reproductiva y la diversidad genética de progenies de B. orbignyanus destinados a la restauración de poblaciones silvestres. Métodos: Se monitorearon las tasas de fertilización, eclosión y mortalidad de reproductores. Para las evaluaciones genéticas (frecuencias alélicas, heterocigosidad observada y esperada, índice de Shannon, coeficiente de endogamia, análisis de varianza molecular y diferenciación genética) los reproductores (n=24) y su progenie (90 larvas/tratamiento) se muestrearon y analizaron utilizando ocho marcadores microsatélites. Resultados: La interacción entre el método de desove y el número de reproductores no fue significativa (p>0,05). Se obtuvieron mejores tasas de fecundación y eclosión (p<0,05), y una menor mortalidad de reproductores (p<0,05) con el método SN, mientras que el número de reproductores no tuvo efecto (p>0,05). Los loci de microsatélites amplificados produjeron un total de 30 alelos con tamaños entre 80 y 225 pb, y sus frecuencias indicaron un aumento (p<0,05) en la diversidad genética de las progenies, pero una baja diferenciación genética entre tratamientos (p>0,05). Conclusión: Los métodos de desove y el número de reproductores evaluados aumentaron de la misma manera la diversidad genética de las progenies, con baja diferenciación genética entre tratamientos. En contraste, las tasas de fecundación, eclosión y mortalidad de peces reproductores revelaron que el SN tuvo la mejor eficiencia reproductiva, un hecho relacionado con el estrés del manejo y las lesiones causadas por el ST. Por lo tanto, el SN demuestra ser el método de desove más adecuado para B. orbignyanus en los programas de repoblación.


Resumo Antecedentes: A manutenção da diversidade genética dos peixes selvagens é uma importante consideração para programas de repovoamento, já que a endogamia pode comprometer a sobrevivência da progênie, além de impactar na resiliência das populações naturais. Objetivo: Avaliar a influência do método de desova (semi-natural - SN ou por extrusão - ST) e número de reprodutores (1♀:3♂ e 2♀:6♂) na eficiência reprodutiva e na diversidade genética de progênie de B. orbignyanus destinados à recuperação de estoques selvagens. Métodos: Taxas de fertilização, eclosão e mortalidade de reprodutores foram monitorados. Para avaliações genéticas (frequências alélicas, heterozigosidade observada e esperada, índice de Shannon, coeficiente de endogamia, análise de variância molecular e diferenciação genética), reprodutores (n=24) e sua progênie (90 larvas/tratamento) foram amostrados e analisados utilizando oito marcadores microssatélites. Resultados: Interação entre método de desova e número de reprodutores não foi significante (p>0,05). Melhores taxas de fertilização e eclosão (p<0,05), e menor (p<0,05) mortalidade de reprodutores foram observados para o método SN, enquanto que o número de reprodutores não afetou esses parâmetros (p>0,05). Os loci microssatélites amplificados produziram um total de 30 alelos, com tamanhos entre 80 e 225 pb e suas frequências indicaram aumento (p<0,05) da diversidade genética nas progênies, mas baixa diferenciação genética entre os tratamentos (p>0,05). Conclusão: Os métodos de desova e números de reprodutores avaliados aumentaram igualmente a diversidade genética das progênies, com baixa diferenciação genética entre tratamentos. Em contraste, as taxas de fecundação, eclosão e mortalidade de reprodutores revelaram que SN obteve a melhor eficiência reprodutiva, fato relacionado com o estresse de manipulação e injurias causadas por ST. Por isso, SN se mostrou como o método de desova mais adequado para B. orbignyanus em programas de repovoamento.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: Creep feed is offered to suckling piglets to introduce solid feed and provide extra nutrients in late lactation. However, the effect of creep feed is inconsistent; there is little information about the effect of creep diet complexity on piglet performance. Objective: Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of creep feed and its complexity on growth performance of suckling and weaned pigs. Methods: In Exp. 1, eight litters (average 19.9 ± 1.1 d of age; initial piglet weight: 6.74 ± 1.2 kg) were allotted to two dietary treatments considering breed, litter size and weight, as follows: no creep feed (n=3) and creep feed (n=5; offered for 8 days before weaning). At weaning (d 28 of age), the pigs were divided into three treatments (6 pigs/pen, 3 replicates; initial body weight: 9.66 ± 0.34 kg) balanced by gender, body weight, and breed, as follows: creep feed eaters, creep feed non-eaters, and no creep feed. In Exp. 2, two different types of creep feed were offered to suckling piglets (initial piglet weight: 3.79 ± 0.55 kg) in seven litters from d 12 of age (average 12.0 ± 1.3 d of age) to weaning (d 25 of age). Treatments were: HCF (n=4): highly-complex creep diet containing 3% fish meal, 2.4% blood meal, and 15% whey; and 2) LCF (n=3): lowly-complex creep diet without the mentioned ingredients. At weaning, only eater pigs were divided into 2 treatments (6 pigs/pen, 3 replicates; initial body weight: 7.53 ± 0.97 kg) balanced by gender, breed and body weight as follows: HCF eaters and LCF eaters. In both experiments, creep feed was mixed with 1% Cr2O3 to measure fecal color for eater/non-eater categorization and the pigs were fed a common nursery diet for 21 days. Results: In both experiments, there were no differences on piglet weaning weight and overall nursery growth performance among the treatments. In Exp. 2, the creep feed intake and percentage of eaters per litter were not different between the HCF and LCF treatments, whereas the HCF eaters tended to have a greater average daily gain (p=0.08) and gain to feed ratio (p=0.09) than the LCF eaters during d 7-14 postweaning. Conclusion: Creep feed did not affect overall piglet growth in suckling and nursery phases, but its complexity might affect pig growth in the early nursery phase.


Resumen Antecedentes: El alimento de pre-iniciación se ofrece a los lechones lactantes para introducir la alimentación sólida y proporcionar nutrientes adicionales durante la lactancia tardía. Sin embargo, sus efectos son inconsistentes y hay poca información sobre el efecto de la complejidad de la dieta de pre-iniciación sobre el rendimiento de los cerdos. Objetivo: Se realizaron dos experimentos para evaluar el efecto del suministro de pre-iniciador y la complejidad del mismo sobre el crecimiento de lechones y cerdos destetados. Métodos: En el Exp. 1, ocho camadas (promedio 19,9 ± 1.1 d de edad; peso inicial: 6,74 ± 1,2 kg) se asignaron a dos tratamientos con base en raza, tamaño de camada, y peso, de la siguiente manera: sin suministro (n=3) y con suministro de pre-iniciador (n = 5; ofrecido durante 8 días antes del destete). Al destete (d 28 de edad) los cerdos se dividieron en 3 tratamientos (6 cerdos/corral y 3 réplicas; peso inicial: 9,66 ± 0,34 kg) balanceados por género, peso y raza, de la siguiente manera: consumidores de pre-iniciador, no consumidores de pre-iniciación, y sin suministro de pre-iniciación. En el Exp. 2 se ofrecieron dos tipos diferentes de pre-iniciador a los cerditos lactantes (peso inicial del lechón: 3,79 ± 0,55 kg) en siete camadas desde el día 12 de edad (promedio 12,0 ± 1,3 días de edad) hasta el destete (día 25 de edad). Los tratamientos fueron: HCF (n=4): dieta de pre-iniciación de alta complejidad conteniendo 3% de harina de pescado, 2,4% de harina de sangre y 15% de suero de leche; y 2) LCF (n=3): dieta de pre-iniciación de baja complejidad, sin esos ingredientes. Al destete, solo los cerdos que consumieron pre-iniciador se dividieron en 2 tratamientos (6 cerdos/corral, 3 repeticiones; peso corporal inicial: 7,53 ± 0,97 kg) balanceados por género, raza y peso, de la siguiente manera: consumidores de HCF o de LCF. En ambos experimentos el pre-iniciador se mezcló con Cr2O3 al 1% para medir el color fecal y categorizar los consumidores/ no consumidores, y los cerdos se alimentaron con una dieta común de iniciación durante 21 días. Resultados: En ambos experimentos no hubo diferencias en el peso al destete de los lechones y el rendimiento general de crecimiento en re-cría entre tratamientos. En el Exp. 2, la ingesta de pre-iniciador y el porcentaje de cerdos consumidores por camada no fueron diferentes entre los HCF y LCF, mientras que los consumidores de HCF tendieron a tener mayor ganancia diaria (p=0,08) y mayor relación ganancia/alimento (p=0,09) que los consumidores de LCF durante los días 7-14 pos-destete. Conclusión: el pre-iniciador no afecta el crecimiento general de los lechones en las fases de lactancia y re-cría, pero la complejidad de la dieta podría afectar el crecimiento de los cerditos al inicio de la re-cría.


Resumo Antecedentes: A alimentação por fluência é oferecida aos leitões para introduzir alimentos sólidos e fornecer nutrientes extras no final da lactação. No entanto, o efeito ainda é inconsistente e há poucas informações sobre o efeito da complexidade da dieta de fluência no desempenho dos leitões. Objetivo: Dois experimentos foram conduzidos para avaliar o efeito da alimentação por fluência e a complexidade da dieta no desempenho do crescimento de porcos em aleitamento e desmame. Métodos: Em Exp. 1, oito ninhadas (média de 19,9 ± 1,1 d de idade; peso inicial do leitão: 6,74 ± 1,2 kg) foram distribuídos em 2 tratamentos com base na raça, tamanho e peso da ninhada, da seguinte forma: ausência de ração (n=3) e ração por creep (n=5; oferecido por 8 dias antes do desmame). No desmame (d 28 anos de idade), os porcos foram divididos em 3 tratamentos (6 porcos/caneta, 3 repetições; peso corporal inicial: 9,66 ± 0,34 kg) balanceados com gênero, peso corporal e raça, como a seguir: comedores de ração, creep feed não comedores, e creep feed. Em Exp. 2, foram oferecidos dois tipos diferentes de ração para leitões (peso inicial dos leitões: 3,79 ± 0,55 kg) em sete ninhadas de 12 anos de idade (média 12,0 ± 1,3 dias) até o desmame (25 anos). Os tratamentos foram: HCF (n=4): dieta de fluência de alta complexidade contendo 3% de farinha de peixe, 2,4% de farinha de sangue e 15% de soro de leite; e 2) LCF (n=3): dieta de fluência de baixa complexidade sem esses ingredientes. No desmame, apenas os porcos comedores foram divididos em 2 tratamentos (6 porcos/caneta, 3 repetições; peso corporal inicial: 7,53 ± 0,97 kg) balanceados com gênero, raça e peso corporal da seguinte forma: comedores de HCF e comedores de LCF. Em ambos os experimentos, a alimentação fluida foi misturada com 1% de Cr2O3 para medir a cor fecal para categorização de comedor/ não comedor e os porcos foram alimentados com uma dieta comum durante 21 dias. Resultados: Nos dois experimentos, não houve diferenças no peso ao desmame dos leitões e no desempenho geral do crescimento do viveiro entre os tratamentos. Em Exp. 2, o consumo de ração por creep e a porcentagem de comedores por ninhada não foram diferentes entre os tratamentos de HCF e LCF, enquanto os comedores de HCF tenderam a ter um maior ganho médio diário (p=0,08) e uma taxa de ganho para alimentação (p=0,09) do que os comedores de LCF durante d 7-14 pós-desmame. Conclusão: A alimentação por fluência não afetou o crescimento geral de leitões nas fases de amamentação e viveiro, mas a complexidade da dieta pode afetar o crescimento de leitões na fase inicial do viveiro.

Introducción: La identificación de las especies de mosquitos a nivel de cada municipio forma parte del Programa de Vigilancia y Control de Aedes aegypti y Aedes albopictus vigente en Cuba. Objetivo: Identificar las especies de mosquitos en sitios de crías artificiales y naturales y relacionarlo con el papel de la comunidad en el control de sus poblaciones en la provincia La Habana. Métodos: Se identificaron las muestras larvarias de mosquitos enviadas al laboratorio provincial de Entomología, colectadas en depósitos artificiales y en sitios naturales en los municipios de La Habana desde enero del 2000 hasta el 2016. Resultados: En el estudio se identificaron un total de 48 especies de mosquitos. Aedes aegypti, Gymnometopa mediovittata, Culex quinquefasciatus y Culex nigripalpus, estuvieron presentes en todos los municipios de La Habana. Los depósitos abandonados en los alrededores de las viviendas y terrenos baldíos como: latas, bebederos, chatarra metálica, neumáticos de autos usados, entre otros, relacionados con actividades humanas, aportaron la mayor riqueza de especies al ecosistema urbano, seguido por los huecos de árboles y sitios de cría naturales. Los depósitos artificiales de almacenamiento de agua con fines domésticos en las viviendas, tales como: tanques, cisternas, cubos, entre otros, fueron los de menor riqueza, pero fundamentales para la presencia de Ae. aegypti. Conclusiones: Disponer de datos actualizados sobre la distribución de las especies de mosquitos y sus sitios de cría en La Habana constituyen una información valiosa para fomentar la participación de la comunidad en la eliminación de estos en momentos de epidemias en que se involucren estos vectores(AU)


Introduction: Identification of the mosquito species present in each municipality is part of the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus Surveillance and Control Program currently in place in Cuba. Objective: Identify the mosquito species in artificial and natural breeding sites and relate that information to the role played by the community in the control of their populations in the province of Havana. Methods: Identification was performed of mosquito larval samples submitted to the Provincial Entomology Laboratory and collected from artificial containers and natural breeding sites in Havana municipalities from January 2000 to 2016. Results: A total 48 mosquito species were identified in the study. Aedes aegypti, Gymnometopa mediovittata, Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex nigripalpus were found to be present in all Havana municipalities. Unused containers scattered around households and in uncultivated fields, such as cans, troughs, scrap metal and used car tires, among other items related to human activities, contribute the greatest species richness to the urban ecosystem, followed by tree holes and natural breeding sites. Artificial water storage containers in households, such as elevated and underground water tanks and buckets, among others, contributed lesser richness, but were fundamental for the presence of A. aegypti. Conclusions: Updated data about the distribution of mosquito species and their breeding sites in Havana is valuable information to foster community participation in their elimination in the event of epidemics involving these vectors(AU)

INTRODUCTION: The biological test established by the World Health Organization to isolate and amplify the rabies virus consists in inoculating lactating mice by intracranial route and detecting rabies signs for 21 days. OBJECTIVE: To verify viral transmission in mothers of rabies virus-inoculated lactating mice. METHOD: Twenty-seven Mexican rabies virus isolates were inoculated by intracranial route in lactating mice, which were observed for 21 days. The mothers were observed for 60 days. The diagnosis was established by immunofluorescence in brain tissue. The virus was characterized by sequencing and with monoclonal antibodies. RESULTS: All litters showed rabies at between 7 and 15 days post-inoculation (p. i.). Three of the 27 females (11 %) had developed rabies at days 33, 37 and 39 p. i. of their litters. Viral characterization showed that the mothers were infected with the same variant of their offspring, two of them stemming from hematophagous bat and one from dog. The liters that transmitted rabies to their mothers were nine individuals. CONCLUSIONS: In nature, the rabies virus could be preserved by transmission from neonates (more susceptible to contracting and amplifying the rabies virus) to their mothers.


INTRODUCCIÓN: La prueba biológica establecida por la Organización Mundial de la Salud para aislar y amplificar el virus de la rabia consiste en inocular vía intracraneal ratones lactantes para detectar signos de rabia en un periodo de 21 días. OBJETIVO: Constatar el contagio viral en las madres de ratones lactantes inoculados con virus de la rabia. MÉTODO: Veintisiete aislados mexicanos de virus de la rabia se inocularon vía intracraneal en ratones lactantes, los cuales fueron observados por 21 días y sus madres, por 60 días. El diagnóstico se llevó a cabo mediante inmunofluorescencia en cerebro. El virus se caracterizó por secuenciación y anticuerpos monoclonales. RESULTADOS: Todas las camadas presentaron rabia entre siete y 15 días posinoculación (p. i.); tres de las 27 hembras (11 %), a los días 33, 37 y 39 p. i. de sus crías. La caracterización viral mostró que las madres se infectaron con la misma variante de sus crías, dos procedían de murciélago hematófago y una de perro. Las camadas que trasmitieron rabia a sus madres fueron nueve individuos. CONCLUSIONES: En la naturaleza, el virus de la rabia podría preservarse mediante la transmisión de los neonatos (más susceptibles de contraer y amplificar el virus) a sus madres.

Abstract Background: Fertility and health traits, other than production traits, have a major role in the profitability of dairy cattle. Therefore, it seems necessary to include the afore mentioned traits in breeding programs. Hence, genetic parameters are needed to establish breeding plans. Objective: To estimate heritabilities as well as genetic and environmental relationships among total milk yield (TMY), persistency of milk yield (PMY), mean somatic cell count (SCC), mean loge somatic cell count (LnSCC), standard deviation of somatic cell count (stdSCC), and calving interval (CI) using two-trait and multi-trait analyses in Iranian Holstein. Methods: The dataset consisted of 25,883 first lactation records collected from 2002 to 2007 in 97 Holstein dairy herds in Iran. Four criteria of persistency of milk yield (PMY) were calculated using the Wood's gamma function. The WOMBAT1.0 software was used to estimate the (co)variance components using the Average Information Restricted Maximum Likelihood algorithm. Results: Total milk yield (TMY) resulted in the highest heritability estimate (0.29). Heritability estimates for different criteria of persistency of milk yield (PMY) ranged from 0.05 to 0.10. The unfavorable genetic correlation between TMY and calving interval (CI) was 0.71, while that of PMY with CI was 0.46. The estimated environmental correlations were lower than the genetic correlations for all traits, but the trends were generally similar. Conclusion: The results indicate that including PMY in the breeding goals could increase TMY and CI, and decrease somatic cell count (SCC).


Resumen Antecedentes: Las características de fertilidad y salud, además de las de producción, tienen un papel importante en la rentabilidad de los hatos lecheros. Por lo tanto, parece necesario incluir los rasgos mencionados en los sistemas de mejoramiento. Por ende, los parámetros genéticos son necesarios para establecer planes de cría. Objetivo: Estimar la heredabilidad, así como las relaciones genéticas y ambientales entre el rendimiento total de leche (TMY), la persistencia del rendimiento lechero (PMY), el recuento medio de células somáticas (SCC), el recuento de células somáticas de loge promedio (LnSCC), la desviación estándar del recuento de células somáticas (stdSCC) y el intervalo de partos (CI) en vacas Holstein mediante análisis de dos rasgos y análisis múltiples. Métodos: Se analizaron registros de primera lactancia de 25.883 vacas Holstein, recolectados entre 2002 y 2007 en 97 rebaños lecheros de Irán. Se calcularon cuatro criterios de persistencia del rendimiento lácteo utilizando la función gamma de Wood. El software Wombat1.0 se utilizó para estimar los componentes de (co)varianza que emplean el algoritmo de máxima verosimilitud restringida de información promedio. Resultados: El rendimiento de leche (TMY) obtuvo la mayor heredabilidad estimada (0,29). Las estimaciones de heredabilidad para diferentes criterios de persistencia del rendimiento de la leche variaron de 0,05 a 0,10. La correlación genética desfavorable entre TMY e intervalo entre partos fue 0,71, mientras que la de PMY con el CI fue de 0,46. Las correlaciones ambientales estimadas fueron inferiores a las correlaciones genéticas para todos los rasgos, pero las tendencias fueron, en general, similares. Conclusión: Incluir el PMY en la meta de cría podría aumentar el TMY y CI, además de disminuir el recuento de células somáticas (SCC).


Resumo Antecedentes: As características de fertilidade e saúde, além das características de produção, têmum papel importante narentabilidade das vacas leiteiras. Por isso, parece necessário incluir as características já mencionadas nos sistemas de melhoramento genético. Assim, são necessários parâmetros genéticos para estabelecer planos de melhoramento genético. Objetivo: Estimar herdabilidade, bem como as relações genéticas e ambientais entre a produção total de leite (TMY), persistância da produção de leite (PMY), contagem médiade células somáticas (SCC), contagem média de células somáticas loge (LnSCC), desviopadrao da contagem média de células somáticas (stdSCC) e intervalo de pertosem (CI) vacas Holstein por duas análises de características e traços multiplos. Métodos: O conjunto de dados consistiuem registros de 25.883 vacas Holstein de primeira lactação coletadas de 2002 a 2007 em 97 rebanhos leiteiros em Iran. Foram calculados quatrocritérios de persistência da produção de leite utilizando a função gama de Wood. O software Wombat1.0 foi usado para estimar os componentes de (co)variância que empregam o algoritmo de máxima verossimilhança com informações restritas. Resultados: A maior herdabilidade (0,29) foi estimada para produção de leite. As estimativas de herdabilidade para diferentes critérios de persisténcia da produção de leite variaram 0,05 a 0,10. A correlação genética desfavorável entre o intervalo TMY eo intervalo de parto foi de 0,71 enquanto que a de PMY com CI foi de 0,46. As correlações ambientais estimadas foram inferiores às correlações genéticas para todos os traços, mas as tendencias foram geralmente semelhantes. Conclusão: Os resultados indicaram que a inclusão de PMY na meta de reprodução poderia aumentar TMY e CI, no entanto, diminuir a contagem de células somáticas.

Resumen Introducción: La prueba biológica establecida por la Organización Mundial de la Salud para aislar y amplificar el virus de la rabia consiste en inocular vía intracraneal ratones lactantes para detectar signos de rabia en un periodo de 21 días. Objetivo: Constatar el contagio viral en las madres de ratones lactantes inoculados con virus de la rabia. Método: Veintisiete aislados mexicanos de virus de la rabia se inocularon vía intracraneal en ratones lactantes, los cuales fueron observados por 21 días y sus madres, por 60 días. El diagnóstico se llevó a cabo mediante inmunofluorescencia en cerebro. El virus se caracterizó por secuenciación y anticuerpos monoclonales. Resultados: Todas las camadas presentaron rabia entre siete y 15 días posinoculación (p. i.); tres de las 27 hembras (11 %), a los días 33, 37 y 39 p. i. de sus crías. La caracterización viral mostró que las madres se infectaron con la misma variante de sus crías, dos procedían de murciélago hematófago y una de perro. Las camadas que trasmitieron rabia a sus madres fueron nueve individuos. Conclusiones: En la naturaleza, el virus de la rabia podría preservarse mediante la transmisión de los neonatos (más susceptibles de contraer y amplificar el virus) a sus madres.


Abstract Introduction: The biological test established by the World Health Organization to isolate and amplify the rabies virus consists in inoculating lactating mice by intracranial route and detecting rabies signs for 21 days. Objective: To verify viral transmission in mothers of rabies virus-inoculated lactating mice. Method: Twenty-seven Mexican rabies virus isolates were inoculated by intracranial route in lactating mice, which were observed for 21 days. The mothers were observed for 60 days. The diagnosis was established by immunofluorescence in brain tissue. The virus was characterized by sequencing and with monoclonal antibodies. Results: All litters showed rabies at between 7 and 15 days post-inoculation (p. i.). Three of the 27 females (11 %) had developed rabies at days 33, 37 and 39 p. i. of their litters. Viral characterization showed that the mothers were infected with the same variant of their offspring, two of them stemming from hematophagous bat and one from dog. The liters that transmitted rabies to their mothers were nine individuals. Conclusions: In nature, the rabies virus could be preserved by transmission from neonates (more susceptible to contracting and amplifying the rabies virus) to their mothers.

ABSTRACT

El comportamiento del peso, la talla y el factor de condición de los organismos es importante para explicar la dinámica de las poblaciones de organismos en el medio natural. El presente estudio está dirigido a encontrar los modelos que explican la relación longitud-peso, así como el factor de condición relativo en postlarvas epibentónicas y juveniles de Farfantepenaeus duorarum, recolectados durante los diferentes meses muestreados. En el trabajo se recolectaron 3 992 camarones de la especie F. duorarum con rangos de longitud del cefalotórax entre 3.62-32.16 mm, provenientes de tres sitios diferentes de la Laguna de Términos, entre los meses de mayo 2011 y marzo 2012. Los individuos fueron agrupados en tres categorías según el sexo: machos (M), hembras (H), e indefinidos (I) y se determinó la relación longitud peso (L-P-1), relación longitud total (LT)-longitud del cefalotórax (LC), así como el factor de condición relativo (Kn). Los resultados indican que la relación longitud total-longitud del cefalotórax (LT-LC) para cada categoría de sexo fue lineal y que no existe diferencia entre el modelo de regresión encontrado para machos y para hembras quedando expresado como: (LT (M-H) = 1.89 + 4.46 LC). Para el grupo con sexo indefinido la relación fue diferente al resto de los camarones y puede ser expresado como LT (I) = 0.07 + 4.62 LC. El modelo potencial para expresar la relación (L-P-1) en el grupo M-H es P = 0.0016 LC2.5323 o expresado de manera lineal como log (P) = 2.5323 log(LC) - 2.8079, con R² = 0.9272. En el grupo indefinido el modelo potencial es P = 0.0004LC3.2315 y el de manera lineal, log (P) = 3.2315 log(LC) - 3.4365, con R2= 0.9422. Por otro lado, el factor de condición relativa (Kn) difirió entre los grupos cuando se incluye a la fecha en el análisis. Se considera que el factor de condición relativo que contempla a la longitud total es mejor que el factor de condición relativo obtenido con la longitud del cefalotórax para evaluar las características de los camarones y pudiera contribuir para evaluar la dinámica de la población de camarones.


The knowledge about the weight, length and condition factor of the organisms is key for explaining the population dynamics in wild animals. The present study was focused on finding the model that best explains the length-weight relationships in epibenthic and juveniles of Farfantepenaeus duorarum, as well as the condition factor during the different months sampled. In the study, 3 992 individuals (size range: 3.62-32.16 mm cephalothorax length) were collected from three different places at the Terminos Lagoon from May 2011 to March 2012. The individuals were grouped into three sex categories: male (M), female (H), and undefined (I), and their length-weight (L-P-1) relationship, as well as their relative condition factor, were determined. The results indicate that the total length-carapace length (LT-LC) relationship for each sex category was linear, there was no difference between the models for small males and females and the relationship can be expressed as (LT (M-H) = 1.89 + 4.46 LC). For the undefined group, the relationship was different and is best expressed as LT (I) = 0.07 + 4.62 LC. The potential model for the expression of Carapace Length-Weight in the M-H group was P = 0.0016 LC2.5323 or log (P) = 2.5323 log(LC) - 2.8079, R² = 0.9272 in the linear model. In the undefined group, the potential model was W = P = 0.0004LC3.2315 and the linear model was log (P) = 3.2315 log(LC) - 3.4365, R2 = 0.9422. On the other hand, the relative condition factor (Kn) differed among groups when the date was involved in the analysis. We consider that relative condition factor involving Total Length is better than relative condition factor including Carapace Length to measure population characteristics of shrimps and that index could contribute to evaluating the shrimp population dynamics.
