ABSTRACT

Objetivo: analisar a produção científica brasileira, na Pós-Graduação em Enfermagem, que utilizou o método de adaptação transcultural. Método: estudo documental, com busca realizada na Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações, que resultou em 140 dissertações e 72 teses para análise, oriundas de Programas de Pós-Graduação da região Sudeste, seguida das regiões Nordeste, Sul e Centro-Oeste, sem representação da região Norte. Resultados: os instrumentos adaptados foram, em sua maioria, procedentes do idioma inglês. Prevaleceram as pesquisas na área/campo Assistencial, destacando-se a linha de pesquisa Processo de Cuidar em Saúde e Enfermagem. Identificou-se descompasso entre o que é produzido na área e o que é recomendado internacionalmente. Conclusão: verificou-se aumento na utilização da adaptação transcultural como método de pesquisa, com persistência das assimetrias acadêmicas regionais e sem consenso sobre o referencial metodológico.


Objective: to analyze the Brazilian scientific production in Postgraduate Nursing education using the cross-cultural adaptation method. Method: documentary study with searches carried out in the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations resulting in 140 Master's theses and 72 Doctoral dissertations for analysis originated from Postgraduate Programs carried out in the Southeast region of Brazil, followed by the Northeast, South and Midwest regions ­ there was no representation of the North region. Results: the adapted instruments were, mostly, originally written in English. Research in the Care area/field prevailed, highlighting the line of research called Health and Nursing Care Process. A gap between what is produced in the area and what is recommended internationally was identified. Conclusion: an increase in the use of cross-cultural adaptation as a research method was noticed, with the persistence of regional academic asymmetries and lack of consensus on the methodological framework.

Se identificó que lo que se produce en el área no coincide con lo que se recomienda a nivel internacional. Conclusión: se comprobó que aumentó el uso de la adaptación transcultural como método de investigación, que persisten las disparidades académicas regionales y que no hay consenso sobre el marco metodológico.

ABSTRACT

Novel reprocessable thermosetting adhesives (RTAs), which combine high adhesive strength, reusability, disassembly, and recyclability features, have attracted increasing attention. However, developing RTAs with a rapidly adhesive rate while ensuring high adhesive strength and self-healing ability is still a significant challenge. Here, we prepared a novel vitrimer called DAx-DTSAy, which can be used as an RTA. First, by adjusting the ratio of rigid and flexible segments, maximum tensile strength reached 35.92 MPa. Second, the combined effect of dynamic hydroxyl ester bonds and dynamic disulfide bonds resulted in a rapid stress relaxation behavior, with a complete relaxation time 13.6 times shorter than a vitrimer only cross-linked with hydroxy ester bonds. This feature endowed its good self-healing and reprocessing capabilities. After self-healing at 180 °C, the maximum healing rate of mechanical properties was 91.8%. After three reprocesses, the maximum recovery rate of tensile strength was 120.2%. Furthermore, the combination of rigid and flexible segments and the synergistic effect of dual dynamic covalent bonds made DAx-DTSAy capable of use as a high-performance RTA. The lap shear strength of a DAx-DTSAy film on stainless steel reached 18.18 MPa after 15 min, with a recovery rate of 91.9% after 5 rebonding cycles. Additionally, DAx-DTSAy can be disassembled in chemical agents and exhibited better insulation properties compared to traditional epoxy resins. DAx-DTSAy can be employed as a novel high-performance adhesive in applications such as electronic devices and transportation, contributing to the development of thermosetting adhesives toward recyclability and sustainability.

BACKGROUND: Child swimming lessons are a key intervention for drowning prevention; however, participation has been severely affected by COVID-19 restrictions and cost-of-living challenges. To encourage re-engagement, the New South Wales government began providing A$100 swimming lesson vouchers. Parent/carers of eligible preschool-aged children were asked to complete a survey during voucher creation. This study aimed to examine pre-existing challenges to lesson participation among families who had not participated in the preceding 12 months. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from parent/carer surveys completed between December 2021 and June 2022 were analysed. Binary logistic models analysed associations between sociodemographic factors and answered affirmatively to one or more challenges to participation from a predefined list. RESULTS: Of 221 218 vouchers created, 79 553 parent/carers (36%) indicated that their child had not participated in swimming lessons in the last 12 months and responded to the question about participation challenges. Parent/carers of children with disabilities or residing in low socioeconomic areas had higher odds of indicating cost was a challenge while regional/remote families had over five times higher odds of indicating swim school availability difficulties. Families speaking a non-English language at home had over 2.5 times higher odds of thinking that their child was too young for swimming lessons, higher odds of thinking swimming lessons were not important and higher odds of indicating that COVID-19 had challenged participation. CONCLUSION: These findings highlight how different population groups experience challenges to participation in swimming lessons. Alleviating costs and increasing lesson availability is important.

ABSTRACT

Vitrimers are a new class of heterogeneous polymers that combine the best features of thermosets with those of thermoplastics. The introduction of cross-links strongly changes the viscoelastic behavior of vitrimer materials. However, the characterization and understanding of the nanostructures and interfaces in vitrimers resulting from dynamic cross-linking formation remain a major challenge. Here, using dynamic modes of atomic force microscopy (AFM), namely intermodulation AFM (ImAFM) and AFM-based dynamic mechanical analysis (AFM-nDMA), local viscoelastic properties and interfaces at the nanoscale length of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) vitrimer materials are reported. ImAFM imaging in combination with the k-means clustering algorithm clearly reveals two distinct phases in the vitrimer system with highly different viscoelastic properties. AFM-nDMA further provides quantitative nanoviscoelastic properties at the nanoscale to confirm that there is a cross-linking-rich aggregation area forming a nanosize network structure in the cross-linking-poor matrix phase. The cross-linking-rich region shows a similar elastic modulus but much higher adhesion force measured by AFM compared to the cross-linking-poor HDPE matrix. Furthermore, the frequency influence on the local viscoelastic properties of HDPE vitrimer at the nanoscale was initially screened. The observed HDPE vitrimer nanostructures and viscoelastic properties at the nanoscale also provide explanations on the observed bulk HDPE vitrimer crystallinity decrease and dimensional stability increase compared to HDPE. Therefore, probing the viscoelastic properties and interfaces of HDPE vitrimer provides important insights into understanding of the correlations between the vitrimer nanostructure and the bulk mechanical and rheological behaviors.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare the regenerative clinical and radiographic effects of cross-linked hyaluronic acid (xHyA) with enamel matrix proteins (EMD) at six months after regenerative treatment of periodontal intrabony defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients presenting one intrabony defect each were randomly assigned into control (EMD) and test (xHyA) groups. Clinical attachment level (CAL) gain was the primary outcome, while pocket probing depth (PPD), gingival recession (REC), bleeding on probing (BOP), full-mouth plaque score (FMPS), full-mouth bleeding score (FMBS), and radiographic parameters such as defect depth (BC-BD), and defect width (DW) were considered secondary outcome variables. Parameters were recorded at baseline and after 6 months. RESULTS: At the 6-month follow-up, 54 patients were available for statistical analysis. In the control and test groups, the mean CAL gain was statistically significant in the intragroup comparison (p < 0.001). 48.1% of test sites showed a CAL gain ≤ 2 mm compared with 33.3% of control sites. The mean PPD reduction was statistically significant in the intragroup comparison in both groups (p < 0.001). The mean REC increase was similar in the two groups: 1.04 ± 1.29 mm vs 1.11 ± 1.22 mm (test vs control). The mean BC-BD, DW, FMPS, FMBS, and BOP changed statistically significantly only in the intragroup comparison, not in the intergroup comparison. CONCLUSION: Both treatments, EMD and xHyA, produced similar statistically significant clinical and radiographical improvements after six months when compared with baseline.

ABSTRACT

Although silicon (Si) has a high theoretical capacity, the large volume expansion during lithiation has greatly hindered its application in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Among the strategies for improving the performance of Si anode, the role of binders should not be underestimated. Here, a novel strategy for designing a cross-linkable binder for Si anode has been proposed. The binder with hydroxyl and nitrile groups can be in situ covalently cross-linked through the amide group in the batteries. The cross-linked binder (c-POAH) shows high elasticity and strong adhesion to Si particles and the current collector. Si||Li half coin cells using the c-POAH binder have excellent cycle performance and the capacity retention ratio is 67.1% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. Scanning electronic microscopy images show that the c-POAH binder can contribute to suppressing the pulverization of the Si anode. Moreover, the investigation with X-ray photoelectronic spectrum demonstrates that the decomposition of the liquid electrolyte on Si anode has been mitigated and the c-POAH binder can promote the formation of a more stable SEI film. Our strategy of endowing the binder with good elasticity through in situ cross-linking has opened up a new route for developing binders, which will definitely promote the application of Si anodes in high-energy-density LIBs.

BACKGROUND: Patients with refractory, symptomatic left ventricular (LV) mid-cavity obstructive (LVMCO) hypertrophic cardiomyopathy have few therapeutic options. Right ventricular pacing is associated with modest hemodynamic and symptomatic improvement, and LV pacing pilot data suggest therapeutic potential. We hypothesized that site-specific pacing would reduce LVMCO gradients and improve symptoms. METHODS: Patients with symptomatic-drug-refractory LVMCO were recruited for a randomized, blinded trial of personalized prescription of pacing (PPoP). Multiple LV and apical right ventricular pacing sites were assessed during an invasive hemodynamic study of multisite pacing. Patient-specific pacing-site and atrioventricular delays, defining PPoP, were selected on the basis of LVMCO gradient reduction and acceptable pacing parameters. Patients were randomized to 6 months of active PPoP or backup pacing in a crossover design. The primary outcome examined invasive gradient change with best-site pacing. Secondary outcomes assessed quality of life and exercise following randomization to PPoP. RESULTS: A total of 17 patients were recruited; 16 of whom met primary end points. Baseline New York Heart Association was 3±0.6, despite optimal medical therapy. Hemodynamic effects were assessed during pacing at the right ventricular apex and at a mean of 8 LV sites. The gradients in all 16 patients fell with pacing, with maximum gradient reduction achieved via LV pacing in 14 (88%) patients and right ventricular apex in 2. The mean baseline gradient of 80±29 mm Hg fell to 31±21 mm Hg with best-site pacing, a 60% reduction (P<0.0001). One cardiac vein perforation occurred in 1 case, and 15 subjects entered crossover; 2 withdrawals occurred during crossover. Of the 13 completing crossover, 9 (69%) chose active pacing in PPoP configuration as preferred setting. PPoP was associated with improved 6-minute walking test performance (328.5±99.9 versus 285.8±105.5 m; P=0.018); other outcome measures also indicated benefit with PPoP. CONCLUSIONS: In a randomized placebo-controlled trial, PPoP reduces obstruction and improves exercise performance in severely symptomatic patients with LVMCO. BACKGROUND: Carotenoids are a group of tetraterpenoid lipophilic pigments linked to depression, but studies on individual carotenoid components are lacking. We aimed to assess the association between each serum carotenoids and depressive symptoms in adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 7264 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Serum carotenoid levels (α-carotene, ß-carotene, ß-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, and lutein/zeaxanthin) were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. Participants with a Patient Health Questionnaire score ≥ 10 were considered to have depressive symptoms. The association between each carotenoid and depressive symptoms was investigated using multivariable-adjusted logistic regression, restricted cubic spline, and weighted quantile sum regression models. RESULTS: The participants' average age was 46.0 (interquartile range: 34.0-60.0) years (50.9 % females), and 545 participants (7.5 %) were diagnosed with depressive symptoms. The logistic regression model demonstrated that high serum α-carotene, ß-carotene, ß-cryptoxanthin, and lutein/zeaxanthin levels were associated with a lower likelihood of depressive symptoms. The restricted cubic spline model revealed that the significantly inverse relationships between serum carotenoid levels and the risk of depressive symptoms were nonlinear for α-carotene, ß-carotene, ß-cryptoxanthin, and lutein/zeaxanthin and were linear for lycopene. The threshold effect analysis further identified the inflection points were 12.1, 35.7, 5.9, and 7.7 µg/dL for α-carotene, ß-carotene, ß-cryptoxanthin, and lutein/zeaxanthin, respectively. The weighted quantile sum regression model revealed that ß-cryptoxanthin (35.2 %) and α-carotene (34.5 %) were the top-weighted carotenoids correlated with depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The present results suggested an association between higher levels of each serum carotenoids and a decreased risk of depressive symptoms in adults.

ABSTRACT

Remediating hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from contaminated water systems is a significant concern due to its harmful effects on human health, aquatic life, and plants. To tackle this issue, scientists have created a chitosan cross-linked hydrous ceria incorporated cupric oxide bio-polymeric composite (CHCCO) by combining chitosan biopolymer with corresponding metal ions using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker. The composite was characterized using advanced analytical instruments such as FTIR, p-XRD, SEM, XPS, etc. The synthesized composite (CHCCO) was then tested for its efficiency in removing Cr(VI) from synthetic Cr(VI) aqueous samples. The parameters examined included pH, material dose, contact time, concentration, temperature, and co-existing ions. The experimental data showed that the kinetics and equilibrium data fit well with the pseudo-second-order and the Freundlich isotherm models, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the investigated surface adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Except for the SO42- ion, no other species imparts adverse influence significantly on the reaction. The CHCCO bio-composite surfaces were refreshed using a dilute NaOH (1.0 M) solution and effectively recycled five times for Cr(VI) adsorption, indicating no significant surface activity deterioration. This study highlights the high effectiveness of CHCCO bio-polymeric composites in Cr(VI) remediation and the potential for this technology as an easy-to-use technique for environmental restoration.

INTRODUCTION: Follicular lymphoma (FL) is an indolent subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), characterized by a long natural course of remissions/relapses. We aimed to evaluate real-world quality of life (QoL) in patients with FL, by line of therapy (LOT), and across countries. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Adelphi FL Disease Specific Programme™, a cross-sectional survey of physicians and their patients in Europe [France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom (UK)], and the United States (US) from June 2021 to January 2022. Patients provided demographics and patient-reported outcomes via the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer QoL questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30). Bivariate analysis assessed QoL versus NHL, across LOT [first line (1L), second line (2L), third line or later (3L+)] and country. RESULTS: Patients (n = 401) had a mean [standard deviation (SD)] age of 66.0 (9.24) years, 58.1% were male, and 41.9%/22.9% were Ann Arbor stage III/IV. Patients with FL mean EORTC global health status (GHS)/QoL, nausea/vomiting, pain, dyspnea, appetite loss, and diarrhea scores were statistically significantly worse (p < 0.05) versus the NHL reference values. Mean (SD) GHS/QoL worsened from 1L [56.5 (22.21)] to 3L+ [50.4 (20.11)]. Physical and role functioning, fatigue, pain, dyspnea, and diarrhea scores also significantly worsened across later LOTs (p < 0.05). Across all functional domains, mean scores were significantly lower (p < 0.05) and almost all symptom scores (excluding diarrhea) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) for European versus US patients. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with FL at later LOTs had significantly worse scores in most QoL aspects than earlier LOTs. European patients had significantly lower functioning and higher symptom burden than in the US. These real-world findings highlight the need for novel FL therapies that alleviate patient burden, positively impacting QoL.


There is little information about the effects of follicular lymphoma and treatments on quality of life as assessed by patients. We surveyed doctors and their patients with follicular lymphoma across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States (US), and asked patients to complete a form reporting their quality of life. A total of 401 patients were included.In general, patients with follicular lymphoma treated across all lines of treatment had worse quality of life and symptoms of nausea and vomiting, pain, shortness of breath, appetite loss, and diarrhea compared to a reference group of patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Overall quality of life and physical, role, and social functioning of patients with follicular lymphoma worsened from the first to the third line of treatment. Fatigue, pain, dyspnea, and diarrhea symptom scores also worsened across the lines of therapies. European patients had worse quality of life, functioning, and symptoms compared to US patients. Better treatments are needed to improve symptoms, functions, and quality of life for patients with follicular lymphoma.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Diagnostic criteria for multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) and multifocal acquired demyelinating sensorimotor neuropathy (MADSAM) require the involvement of at least two peripheral nerves. However, many patients with very similar features have clinical involvement of only a single peripheral nerve, which may preclude their correct diagnosis and treatment. The present study aimed to present a cohort of such patients and discuss the role of ultrasonography (US) in their diagnosis. METHODS: Patients with nonvasculitic immune-mediated motor mononeuropathies (MM) and sensorimotor mononeuropathies (SMM) were recruited prospectively or identified from the electronic records. They were invited to comprehensive follow-up visits consisting of clinical examination, electrodiagnostic (EDx), and US studies. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients (13 men) were studied (11 with MM). The characteristics of MM and SMM patients were very similar to MMN and MADSAM, respectively. The US, in addition to a long-swollen segment (average length, 20 cm) in the clinically affected nerve, revealed nerve swelling in, on average, six additional sites in clinically unaffected nerves. DISCUSSION: In patients with clinical and EDx involvement of only a single nerve, an US demonstration of multifocal peripheral nerve swelling points to a more widespread, probably dysimmune mechanism. Further studies are needed to evaluate the value of US as a supplementary method for the diagnosis of MADSAM and MMN in patients with clinical involvement of a single nerve.

BACKGROUND: Two-dimensional (2D) classifications of iodinated contrast media (ICM) are insufficient to explain the observed skin test (ST) reactivity patterns in patients with drug hypersensitivity reactions (DHRs) to ICM. OBJECTIVE: To refine the current view on allergic DHRs to ICM by analyzing ST reactivity patterns in patients with previous reactions to ICM. METHODS: Patients with a history of DHR to ICM and positive STs, who presented at the University Hospital of Montpellier between 2004 and 2022, were included in the study. The relative difference between every two ICM products was measured by Manhattan distance and odds ratios were computed for all pairs of products in the immediate reaction (IR) and non-immediate reaction (NIR) ST groups. RESULTS: A total of 181 patients were included in the study. Odds ratio analysis identified significant associations between classical cross-reactive ICM, such as iohexol-ioversol, iohexol-iomeprol, iomeprol-ioversol, and iohexol-iodixanol in the IR ST group and iohexol-ioversol, iopromide-iohexol, and iomeprol-ioversol in the NIR ST group. We also identified uncommon associations, such as ioxitalamate-amidotrizoate in the IR ST group and amidotrizoate-iopamidol and amidotrizoate-ioxitalamate in the NIR ST group. The results were reflected by the Manhattan distance, which suggested the existence of clusters containing the same classically associated ICM as well as uncommon associations, which we hypothesize to be related to similarities in the 3D structure of the respective ICM. CONCLUSIONS: Current chemical (2D) classifications cannot explain all observed ST reactivity patterns. Whether the 3D structure can be integrated into the current classifications to interpret the observed ST reactivity patterns and predict tolerance to alternative ICM requires further research.

ABSTRACT

Background: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a leading cause of mortality in the developed world. Timely detection of cardiac arrest and prompt activation of emergency medical services (EMS) are essential, yet challenging. Automated cardiac arrest detection using sensor signals from smartwatches has the potential to shorten the interval between cardiac arrest and activation of EMS, thereby increasing the likelihood of survival. Objective: This cross-sectional survey study aims to investigate users' perspectives on aspects of continuous monitoring such as privacy and data protection, as well as other implications, and to collect insights into their attitudes toward the technology. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional web-based survey in the Netherlands among 2 groups of potential users of automated cardiac arrest technology: consumers who already own a smartwatch and patients at risk of cardiac arrest. Surveys primarily consisted of closed-ended questions with some additional open-ended questions to provide supplementary insight. The quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, and a content analysis of the open-ended questions was conducted. Results: In the consumer group (n=1005), 90.2% (n=906; 95% CI 88.1%-91.9%) of participants expressed an interest in the technology, and 89% (n=1196; 95% CI 87.3%-90.7%) of the patient group (n=1344) showed interest. More than 75% (consumer group: n= 756; patient group: n=1004) of the participants in both groups indicated they were willing to use the technology. The main concerns raised by participants regarding the technology included privacy, data protection, reliability, and accessibility. Conclusions: The vast majority of potential users expressed a strong interest in and positive attitude toward automated cardiac arrest detection using smartwatch technology. However, a number of concerns were identified, which should be addressed in the development and implementation process to optimize acceptance and effectiveness of the technology.

ABSTRACT

The intrinsic volumetric stress during cycling is the main obstacle for developing Si-based materials as high-energy-density lithium-ion battery anodes. Elastic binders have been demonstrated as an efficient approach to alleviate the stress of Si. Herein, we design a tough 3D hard/soft polymeric network (LPTS) using lithiated poly(acrylic acid), silk sericin, and highly branched tannic acid. Covalent cross-linking provides a robust mechanical strength to endure the large stress. The formed multiple hydrogen bonds with bonding energies between 3.46 and 25 kcal mol-1 can effectively dissipate the stress through sequential hydrogen bond disassociation. The multifunctional LPTS binder maintains the integrity of the Si-based electrodes during repeated discharging/charging. Additionally, Li+ can be transferred via a Li-conducting group (-COOLi), thereby enhancing the ionic conductivity of electrodes. Consequently, the Si/LPTS electrode exhibits an improved initial Coulombic efficiency and excellent durability over 400 cycles. Meanwhile, this binder is also suitable for Si-C anodes, enabling stable cycling at a high areal capacity >3.6 mAh cm-2 and delivering 72.2% capacity retention for the LFP||Si-C/LPTS full cell after 200 cycles. This study provides insight into developing efficient Si-based binders that are facile and low-cost for next-generation high-energy-density systems.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to illustrate the copper status of diminished ovarian reserve in Chinese women, especially the effects of copper, ceruloplasmin, non-ceruloplasmin-bound copper (NCC) and CuZn superoxide dismutase (SOD1). METHODS: This case-control, cross-sectional investigation included women with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR group, n = 35) and matched normal ovarian reserve (NOR group, n = 35). The serum levels of copper, ceruloplasmin, NCC, SOD1, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estradiol, testosterone, and anti-Müllerian hormone were tested and analyzed. RESULTS: The serum copper concentrations (60.88%), NCC (54.75%) and SOD1 (54.75%) in the DOR group were significantly higher than those in the NOR group (all P < 0.001), and the concentrations of the three markers were higher in most subgroups (P < 0.001). The correlation analysis verified the correlation between copper status and impaired ovarian function. Additionally, linear regression analysis showed that NCC and SOD1 levels were negatively correlated with anti-Müllerian hormone (P < 0.05 or 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our exploration found significant increases in copper, NCC and SOD1 levels in DOR and suggests a possible link. Copper status is expected to serve as the predictive marker for DOR.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify and map the available psychometric evidence of the FRAIL scale to screen frailty among older adults. DESIGN: Scoping review of published articles on 9 databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, PsycINFO, VHL Regional Portal, and Epistemonikos) and 8 gray literature sources. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Studies in adults or older adults, in both inpatient and outpatient settings (without context restrictions). METHODS: Cross-cultural adaptations, validity and reliability evidence studies, whose main objective was to develop and/or validate and/or culturally adapt the FRAIL Scale to assess frailty in adults or older adults, published since 2007 were included in this scoping review. The databases were searched between February and March 2023.The JBI methodology for scoping reviews was used to guide the process. The protocol of this study was registered on the Open Science Framework platform. RESULTS: Of the 1031 records found during the search, 40 articles that met the established criteria for analysis were included. Nearly 1 in 10 countries worldwide (11.9%) have psychometric evidence regarding this scale. Ten studies were identified with the goal of cross-cultural adaptation and/or validation in a different cultural context for the first time. Twenty-one of 40 studies used Morley 2012 operationalization of FRAIL Scale criteria. Thirty-nine studies provided evidence of associations with other variables. The rest of the evidence for content, internal structure, response processes, and reliability was only evaluated in cross-cultural adaptation studies, with limitations. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: In conclusion, there is some evidence of validity for FRAIL Scale; nevertheless, studies are needed to adapt the scale to new cultures, using rigorous Cross-Cultural Adaptation processes, and to provide new evidence of validity and reliability, to strengthen and consolidate the body of knowledge for its application to various patient groups and context.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease. Currently, contradictory findings exist regarding the association between food folate and asthma. Therefore, we hypothesize a positive correlation between food folate and asthma. PURPOSE: To investigate the possible relationship between food folate intake and the development of asthma in children and adolescents in the United States. METHODS: Data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2009 to 2018 were analyzed cross-sectionally by covariate adjustment using multivariate logistic regression, restricted triple spline curves, threshold effects, and stratified analyses. RESULTS: There were 8,821 participants, of whom 1,697 (19.2%) self-reported having received a diagnosis of asthma from a physician or other health professional. After accounting for potential confounders, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for asthma in the second (T2, 111-178 µg/day) and third (T3, >178 µg/day) groups were 1.15 (1-1.33) and 1.23 (1.04-1.46), respectively, compared with the group with the lowest food folate intake (T1, <111 µg/day). In addition, the association between food folate intake and asthma showed an inverse L-shaped curve (non-linear relationship, p = 0.003), and stratified analysis further validated the robustness of the results. The OR of asthma in subjects with food folate intake less than 263.9 µg/day was 1.002 (1.001-1.004). CONCLUSION: In children and adolescents in the United States, there is a non-linear association (inverted "L" shape) between food folate intake and asthma, with an inflection point at 263.9 micrograms per day.

ABSTRACT

Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) poses a significant threat to Brassicaceae crops, leading to substantial losses annually. Repeated insecticide applications are widely used to protect crops and increase the resistance of P. rapae. Exploring the biochemical and molecular basis of insecticide tolerance in P. rapae is crucial for achieving effective insect suppuration and implementing resistance control strategies. In our research, emamectin benzoate (EBZ) resistance was developed in P. rapae strain through selective pressure over 15 generations. Moreover, the biochemical mechanisms underlying resistance to EBZ and its potential cross-resistance to other insecticides were studied. Additionally, the expression levels of cytochrome P450 (CYP450) and glutathione-s-transferase (GST) genes in P. rapae were quantitatively assessed upon exposure to EBZ using real-time PCR. Our data exhibited that the LC50 value of susceptible strain (Sus) and EBZ resistance strain (EBZ-R) were 0.009 and 8.09 mg/L, with a resistance ratio (RR) reaching 898.8-fold. The EBZ-R stain displayed notably low cross-resistance to lambda-cyhalothrin, spinetoram, and cypermethrin. However, it demonstrated a moderate level of cross-resistance to deltamethrin. Conversely, no cross-resistance was noted to chlorantraniliprole and indoxacarb. Notably, enzyme inhibitors of detoxification enzymes revealed that piperonyl butoxide (PBO) and diethyl maleate (DEM) enhanced the EBZ toxicity to the resistant strain, indicating the potential involvement of CYP450 and GST in avermectin resistance. A remarkable enhancement in CYP450 and GST activity was observed in the EBZ-R stain. CYP450 and GST genes are upregulated in the EBZ-R stain compared to the Sus strain, which serves as a basis for comprehending the mechanism behind P. rapae resistance to EBZ. The molecular docking analysis demonstrated that EBZ has a high binding affinity with CYP6AE120 and PrGSTS1 with docking energy values of -20.19 and -22.57 kcal/mol, respectively. Our findings offer valuable insights into crafting efficient strategies to monitor and manage resistance in P. rapae populations in Egypt.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship of social isolation and loneliness on sarcopenia among Chinese middle-aged and elderly people. METHODS: Social isolation, loneliness, and sarcopenia were measured at baseline. Follow-up measures of new-onset sarcopenia were obtained 4 years later. Then used logistic regression to evaluate the association between social isolation, loneliness and sarcopenia. RESULTS: In cross-sectional analysis, social isolation and loneliness are significantly associated with sarcopenia [OR = 1.88 (95% CI = 1.54-2.28)]. In longitudinal analysis, social isolation and loneliness are significantly associated with sarcopenia [OR = 1.09 (95% CI = 0.71-1.69)]. Social isolation and loneliness have a synergistic effect. Among them, individuals over 60 years old [OR = 2.01 (95% CI = 1.37-2.96)] and those without social support [OR = 2.64 (1.61-4.32), P-for interaction < 0.001] are at higher risk. CONCLUSION: Social isolation and loneliness were significantly associated with sarcopenia, and there was a synergistic effect between social isolation and loneliness.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: A knowledge of gouty arthritis could help in the primary prevention of the disease development and lead to an early diagnosis if it occurs. This study investigated the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward gouty arthritis in the general population > 30 years old. METHODS: This web-based cross-sectional study was conducted among the general population > 30 years old between January and March 2023 in Chengdu, Sichuan. The questionnaire was designed by the investigators based on the available guidelines (Cronbach's α = 0.846). A score above 70% indicated good knowledge, a positive attitude, and proactive practice. Multivariable and structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses were performed to analyze the factors influencing KAP. RESULTS: A total of 537 questionnaires were included. The knowledge, attitudes, and practices scores were 13.12 ± 6.41, 25.28 ± 3.97, and 45.25 ± 5.77, respectively. Female (OR = 0.47, 95%CI: 0.31-0.71, P < 0.001), suburban living (OR = 0.18, 95%CI: 0.04-0.78, P = 0.022), heads of institution/organization and professional and technical staff (OR = 2.04, 95%CI: 1.23-3.39, P = 0.006), and an income of < 2,000 yuan (OR = 0.35, 95%CI: 0.14-0.85, P = 0.021) were independently associated with knowledge. Female (OR = 2.17, 95%CI: 1.43-3.30, P < 0.001), age (OR = 1.03, 95%CI: 1.01-1.05, P = 0.001), college and above education (OR = 2.26, 95%CI: 1.16-4.41, P = 0.017), an income of 5,000-10,000 yuan (OR = 2.05, 95%CI: 1.27-3.31, P = 0.003), and an income of > 10,000 yuan (OR = 2.07, 95%CI: 1.12-3.81, P = 0.020) were independently associated with attitudes. Attitude (OR = 1.31, 95%CI: 1.23-1.40, P < 0.001), female (OR = 1.62, 95%CI: 1.01-2.58, P = 0.044), and age (OR = 1.02, 95%CI: 1.00-1.04, P = 0.016) were independently associated with practices. The structural equation modeling analysis showed that knowledge directly influenced attitude (ß=-0.10, P < 0.001) and indirectly influenced practice (ß=-0.07, P < 0.001), and attitude directly influenced practice (ß = 0.68, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The general population over 30 years old had inadequate knowledge, unfavorable attitudes, and less proactive practices toward gouty arthritis. Targeted interventions should focus on enhancing knowledge about gout and promoting positive attitudes toward its management.
