ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the ingestive behavior of F1 Holstein × Zebu cows grazing on deferred pasture receiving different supplementation strategies. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 3×4 factorial, with three supplementation strategies and four evaluation periods. The ingestive behavior of 24 cows divided into three groups of supplementation provided at milking was observed, and two of these groups received protein in the pasture. Ingestive behavior was monitored every 10 minutes for 24 hours and analyzed in the form of periods (morning, afternoon, night, and dawn) and total time. The animals remained longer grazing during the afternoon when the BGHI presented values of 83.8. Protein consumption did not influence grazing time but interfered with forage consumption. For the total grazing time, the animals in group 2 spent less time grazing. The groups of animals presented no difference concerning the time spent on rumination and idleness. During night and dawn, when the climate was characterized as thermal comfort, the animals spent more time ruminating. The climatic conditions did not influence the ingestive behavior, as the grazing peak was observed at times of higher BGHI. However, supplementation of the animals in group 2 modified the ingestive behavior of F1 H × Z cows.

ABSTRACT

Sheep milk production is incipient in Mexico with scarce knowledge on the performance of dairy ewes from different breeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of breed (Awassi (Aw), East Friesian (EF) and other (Ot)), parity number (1, 2 and 3 or more (+ 3)), litter size (1 and 2 or more (+ 2)) and lambing season (spring-summer (SS) and autumn-winter (AW)) on day of peak yield (DP), peak yield (PY), persistency (P), total milk yield (TMY), 305-day milk yield (TMY305d), 150-day milk yield (TMY150d) and lactation length (LL) of crossbred dairy ewes in a flock of the central highlands of Mexico. A total of 4312 weekly milk yield records collected from 2014 to 2015 were used to model 133 lactations using a random regression model with a fifth-order orthogonal polynomial. Flock mean values of curve parameters were 42 days at DP, 1.2 kg/day at PY, - 3.5 g/day of P, 190 kg TMY, 189 kg TMY305, 124 kg TMY150 and 269 days of LL. Multiparous ewes had significantly higher (P < 0.05) PY and TMY than primiparous ewes. Ewes that lambed in AW had 15% higher PY and produced 14% more TMY than ewes that lambed in SS (P < 0.05). Correlations among curve parameters were significant except for the correlation between PY and LL and between P and TMY150d. TMY was strongly correlated with LL (0.91). Predominantly Awassi crossbred ewes had lower curve parameter values than predominantly East Friesian and other crossbred ewes.

ABSTRACT

Body heat production of F1 HxZ cows managed in different microclimates was evaluated. We evaluated 48 cows, divided into two groups, managed in different pastures and microclimates. Each group was subdivided into three groups of supplementation provided during milking. The thermographic records of the right and left flanks occurred with the animals on the grass. Eye and rectal temperatures were measured after milking. The BGT had a danger signal for microclimate 1 in the afternoon (81.7) and microclimate 2 in the morning and afternoon shifts (81.6 and 83.8, respectively). In microclimate 2, there was difference in the temperature of the right flank for animals in group 2 in relation to the animals in group 3. The temperature of the left flank was higher for the animals in the group 1. Microclimate 1 was characterized by thermal comfort and 2 was discomfort in the morning and afternoon. Supplementation did not influence the heat production of the animals. Rectal and eye mean averages did not differ between groups and the correlation presented low and moderate values for microclimate 1 and 2, respectively. The supply of different sources of supplementation does not interfere with the production and body heat of F1 HxZ cows even when supplied in a climatic environment in which the BGT is close to 84.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to elucidate the differential gene expression in the RNA sequencing transcriptome of isolated perfused udders collected from 4 slaughtered Holstein × Zebu crossbred dairy cows experimentally inoculated with Streptococcus agalactiae. We studied 3 different statistical tools (edgeR, baySeq, and Cuffdiff 2). In summary, 2 quarters of each udder were experimentally inoculated with Strep. agalactiae and the other 2 were used as a control. Mammary tissue biopsies were collected at times 0 and 3 h after infection. The total RNA was extracted and sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq 2000 (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA). Transcripts were assembled from the reads aligned to the bovine UMD 3.1 reference genome, and the statistical analyses were performed using the previously mentioned tools (edgeR, baySeq, and Cuffdiff 2). Finally, the identified genes were submitted to pathway enrichment analysis. A total of 1,756, 1,161, and 3,389 genes with differential gene expression were identified when using edgeR, baySeq, and Cuffdiff 2, respectively. A total of 122 genes were identified by the overlapping of the 3 methods; however, only the platelet activation presented a significantly enriched pathway. From the results, we suggest the FCER1G, GNAI2, ORAI1, and VASP genes shared among the 3 methods in this pathway for posterior biological validation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate sugarcane bagasse as roughage in lactating cow on feed intake, digestibility, ingestive behavior, milk production and composition, and microbial protein synthesis. METHODS: Ten Girolando cows at initial body weight of 450±25.6 kg and at 143.7±30.7 days in milk were assigned in two 5×5 Latin square designs. Five 21-day experimental periods were adopted (1° to 14-day: diets adaptation period; 15° to 21-day: data collection and sampling period). The diets consisted of four different levels of sugarcane bagasse (45%, 50%, 55%, and 60%) and a control diet, commonly adopted in the region, based on spineless cactus (25% sugarcane bagasse), formulated to meet 12 kg/d milk yield. RESULTS: The dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and total digestible nutrients intakes and DM and OM digestibilities observed for 45% and 50% bagasse inclusion were similar to control diet, while that 55% and 60% bagasse inclusion were lower. Cows fed control diet, and bagasse diets of 45%, and 50% levels had the nutritional requirements attended, that guaranteed 12 kg/d of milk yield. The crude protein intake and digestibility of cows fed 45%, 50%, and 55% of bagasse inclusion were similar to control diet. The neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake and digestibility differ for all bagasse diets related to control diet, while the non-fiber carbohydrates intake and digestibility for cows fed 45% of bagasse were similar for control diet. The intakes and digestibilities of nutrients decreased linearly in function of bagasse inclusion; NDF and indigestible NDF intakes did not vary. The ruminating time, feeding and rumination efficiency, microbial protein synthesis and milk yield decreased linearly with sugarcane bagasse inclusion. CONCLUSION: Sugarcane bagasse decreases milk production; however, its inclusion level in between 45% to 50% associated to concentrate could replace diets based on spineless cactus for crossbred dairy cow's producing 12 kg/d of milk.

ABSTRACT

It was aimed to evaluate the productive and reproductive traits of 1/2 Holstein x » Nellore, » Gir (Nelogir) females. They were evaluated the effects of order and season of calving, of Gir and Holstein sires grandfathers and fathers of the1/2 Holstein x Nelogir matrices, respectively. Total milk production, with average lactation length of 288 days, was 3,426.9kg of milk. The order of calving influenced the daily average production which was higher in the second calving and lactation length was superior in the first calving. The beginning of rain period (November to January) showed lower lactation length and production a day of calving interval. Total milk production did not vary according to Gir sire, Nelogirs father, and was higher in the matrices daughters of Holstein sires with positive PTA for milk. In the first calving the production peak was of 13.03kg at 45 days of lactation, and from the second calving the production was descending one. In tropical conditions, productive and reproductive traits support the initiative of farm animals 1/2 Holstein x Nelogir from matrices composed Nelogir and that the choice of Holstein bull to produce F1 HNG should be based on the genetic value milk production (milk PTA).(AU)

ABSTRACT

The puerperium is the period between birth and complete uterine involution, which is around 40 days postpartum (dpp) in cattle. This study evaluated the dynamics of uterine involution in 19 crossbred dairy cows, who had given one or more births. The evaluation was done by observing the vital characteristics, body score, ultrasonographic and gynecological examinations, and the odor and characteristics of vaginal secretions. These evaluations were done during eight different moments of puerperium: day 0, 3, 7, 10, 14, 21, 28, and 43. The results from this study demonstrated that there are specific differences relative to uterine involution in crossbred dairy cows at 21 and 28 dpp. Additionally, these results suggest that the diagnosis and treatment of clinical endometritis normally done by evaluating the characteristics and the odor of vaginal secretions should be revised, since spontaneous recuperation of endometritis occurred at 43 dpp.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Age at calving adjustment factors for milk, fat and protein yield were obtained and the genetic values of sires and cows of crossbred European x Zebu animals in the Southeastern region of Brazil were predicted. Statistical analyses of 3,327 lactations were carried out with an animal model using the MTDFREML programs, which included the fixed effects of herd-year, calving season, genetic composition, age class and the random effects of the animal, and of the permanent environment. The adjustment factors for milk yield were slightly smaller than those for fat yield but for the older animals these factors were similar. The adjustment factors for protein production tended to be higher than the correspondent ones for milk and fat production. The adjustment factors for young cows were slightly higher than that for the older ones for all the studied traits. The estimated correlation between non adjusted and adjusted data for age at calving indicated that the adjustment factors were appropriate.
