ABSTRACT

Arabica coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world. The chemical components present in raw Arabica coffee beans (RACB) are directly related to the cup quality of the beverage. Environmental and genetic factors influence the content and profile of these components. Then, this work aimed to evaluate different chemical parameters of RACB from 3 varieties planted in 3 different experimental farms located within the "Alta Mogiana" terroir harvested in 2021 and 2022 to identify a better variety for each farm to produce a high cup quality Arabica coffee. The harvest period had a strong influence on most of the studied parameters because atypical weather conditions occurred in the 2021 harvest. The RACB harvested in 2022 yielded better results and supposedly will produce a beverage of high cup quality. Samples harvested in this period presented mainly average moisture levels closer to optimum (11.02 against 8.56 % in 2021); low total titratable acidity (98.00 against 169.75 mL 0.1 M NaOH/100 g in 2021); high amounts of free amino acids (0.96 against 0.93 g GAE/100 g in 2021), low amounts of CGA (4.27 against 4.85 g/100 g in 2021) and caffeine (1.08 against 1.76 g/100 g in 2021) and high amounts of trigonelline (1.12 against 0.96 g/100 g in 2021). The Rome Sudan variety had the best combination of chemical results, mainly when cultivated in Farm 2 in 2022, presenting high amounts of protein content (15.24 %) and free amino acids (0.96 g GAE/100 g), low total titratable acidity (98.3 mL 0.1 M NaOH/100 g), low amounts of CGA (4.55 g/100 g) and caffeine (1.29 g/100 g) and high amounts of trigonelline (1.11 g/100 g). The analysis of chemical compounds could predict the best farm to cultivate each variety studied and was a guide to foresee a higher cup quality of RACB beverages.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Anteriorly convex sternum in pectus excavatum, also known as banana sternum (BS), influences decision-making during repair and, especially, the need to cross bars. However, the definition of BS remains subjective. Thus, we aim to propose the retrosternal angle (RSA) as a diagnostic measure for the discrimination of BS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a cohort of patients who underwent a minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) between October 2016 and October 2023 at our Pectus Clinic. Five expert thoracic surgeons individually reviewed their medical photographs and chest CT scans assigning patients to BS or non-BS groups based on consensus (≥4 surgeons). RSA measurements were obtained by an independent thoracic surgeon. RESULTS: Among 283 cases analyzed, 50 (18%) were classified as BS and 233 (82%) as non-BS. No significant differences were found between groups in age (p = 0.62), Haller index (p = 0.11), or Correction index (p = 0.58). However, RSA was significantly lower in the BS group (141.2 ± 8.4° vs. 154.5 ± 10.3°, p < 0.0001). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed RSA as a reliable predictor of BS (AUC 0.85, p < 0.0001), with a threshold of 148.5° demonstrating 80% sensitivity and 77% specificity. Regarding potential clinical implications, 26/50 (52%) of patients defined as BS underwent bar crossing, compared with 45/232 (19%) of those not considered a BS (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: This study proposes an objective metric, the Retrosternal Angle, to assess BS in chest CT scans, with a threshold of 148.5° showing high sensitivity and specificity. External validation of this angle and threshold is warranted in future investigations. TYPE OF STUDY: Retrospective comparative study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

ABSTRACT

For the first time, the dual effect of coffee cherry sanitization methods to control the microbial load in processing and the influence of fermentation time on coffee quality parameters was evaluated. Two assays were carried out by wet processing: I) Sanitization of the coffee cherry (ST1: Unclassified processed cherries; ST2: Classified and sanitized cherries with drinking water; ST3: Classified and sanitized cherries with a chemical agents and II) Fermentation times (FT1: 12 h; FT2: 24 h; FT3: 48 h; FT4: 72 h and FT5: 96 h). pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen were monitored during fermentation. Counts of Lactic Acid Bacteria - LAB, mesophiles, and yeasts were carried out on the coffee mass before and after fermentation. Caffeine and chlorogenic acid contents were determined by HPLC-DAD and the sensory profile by methodology for specialty coffees (SCA). The main findings showed that: sanitization with Timsen® did not significantly influence the evolution of pH during fermentation (p > 0.05), but it can reduce to a small extent the action of LAB at the end of the process. It was observed that the temperature of the coffee mass tends to balance with the ambient temperature, with significant effects (p < 0.05) of sanitization (ST2 and ST3) on the stability of this variable during fermentation. Timsen® as a disinfectant affected microbial populations and improved the sensory profile in the cup. In prolonged coffee fermentations (FT3, FT4 and FT5), the pH of the coffee mass tended to stabilize after 36 h, regardless of the process time. Likewise, a correlation was evident between a higher microbial load correlated with better sensory profiles in FT4 and FT5. Neither the sanitization process nor the fermentation time significantly affected the caffeine and chlorogenic acid contents of the coffee, both in its green and roasted states. Consequently, the sanitization of cherry coffee with Timsen® and prolonged fermentation times favor the safety and coffee final quality in the cup.

ABSTRACT

Research into microbial interactions during coffee processing is essential for developing new methods that adapt to climate change and improve flavor, thus enhancing the resilience and quality of global coffee production. This study aimed to investigate how microbial communities interact and contribute to flavor development in coffee processing within humid subtropical climates. Employing Illumina sequencing for microbial dynamics analysis, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) integrated with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for metabolite assessment, the study revealed intricate microbial diversity and associated metabolic activities. Throughout the fermentation process, dominant microbial species included Enterobacter, Erwinia, Kluyvera, and Pantoea from the prokaryotic group, and Fusarium, Cladosporium, Kurtzmaniella, Leptosphaerulina, Neonectria, and Penicillium from the eukaryotic group. The key metabolites identified were ethanol, and lactic, acetic, and citric acids. Notably, the bacterial community plays a crucial role in flavor development by utilizing metabolic versatility to produce esters and alcohols, while plant-derived metabolites such as caffeine and linalool remain stable throughout the fermentation process. The undirected network analysis revealed 321 interactions among microbial species and key substances during the fermentation process, with Enterobacter, Kluyvera, and Serratia showing strong connections with sugar and various volatile compounds, such as hexanal, benzaldehyde, 3-methylbenzaldehyde, 2-butenal, and 4-heptenal. These interactions, including inhibitory effects by Fusarium and Cladosporium, suggest microbial adaptability to subtropical conditions, potentially influencing fermentation and coffee quality. The sensory analysis showed that the final beverage obtained a score of 80.83 ± 0.39, being classified as a specialty coffee by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) metrics. Nonetheless, further enhancements in acidity, body, and aftertaste could lead to a more balanced flavor profile. The findings of this research hold substantial implications for the coffee industry in humid subtropical regions, offering potential strategies to enhance flavor quality and consistency through controlled fermentation practices. Furthermore, this study contributes to the broader understanding of how microbial ecology interplays with environmental factors to influence food and beverage fermentation, a topic of growing interest in the context of climate change and sustainable agriculture.

ABSTRACT

Along with the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) chapters 232 and 233 regarding elemental impurities in pharmaceutical products, new challenges have been imposed in terms of sample preparation procedures prior to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis, considering the matrix complexities. As so, a new microextraction procedure assisted by ultrasound using a cup-horn sonoreactor, minimal reactants, and sample was proposed and validated according to USP. The procedure was optimized with samples of milled tablets and 3 different acid mixtures (HNO3, 3HNO3:1HCl, and 9HNO3:1HF) and it was compared with microwave-assisted acid digestion. In the validation step, recoveries ranging from 85 to 120 % and RSD below 10 % were obtained for 22 analytes (except Ag and Pt) with satisfactory linearity and good sensitivity. The method was then applied for 37 samples of antidepressants, which presented trace levels of As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Pd, Sn, and V.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Introduction: hip revision arthroplasty surgery is a surgical procedure that has been growing in recent years. Revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a notable surgical challenge due to the technical difficulty of the surgery itself. Complications of revision surgery includes dislocation, aseptic loosening, and infection. Objective: to compare the clinical-radiological results, as well as the incidence of complications, of two independent samples of patients who underwent revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA) with mild-moderate acetabular defects using dual mobility implants compared to monopolar implants. Material and methods: retrospective comparative study of two cohorts of 30 patients who underwent acetabular revision surgery using large 36 mm monopolar heads or dual mobility respectively. All patients had Paprosky type I or II acetabular defects. The results on the VAS scale, WOMAC, and Harry hip score (HHS) were evaluated pre and postoperatively in both cohorts. Likewise, the incidence of postoperative complications and the survival rate between both groups were analyzed. Results: mean follow-up was 5.8 years (1-10.3 years). The difference between the pre and postoperative results in each cohort was significant for the VAS, WOMAC and HHS scale. The differences obtained in these scales between the different study groups did not find significant differences. The incidence of postoperative complications between both cohorts was similar, without finding significant differences. Conclusions: we consider that dual mobility does not provide superiority in terms of clinical-functional results and incidence of postoperative complications with respect to monopolar assemblies in acetabular revision surgery with mild-moderate defects.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

As both coffee quality and sustainability become increasingly important, there is growing interest in understanding how ecological quality affects coffee quality. Here we analyze, for the first time, the state of evidence that ecological quality, in terms of biodiversity and ecosystem functions, impacts the quality of Coffea arabica and C. canephora, based on 78 studies. The following ecosystem functions were included: pollination; weed, disease, and pest control; water and soil fertility regulation. Biodiversity was described by the presence, percentage, and diversity of shade trees. Coffee quality was described by the green bean physical characteristics, biochemical compounds, and organoleptic characteristics. The presence and diversity of shade trees positively impacted bean size and weight and reduced the percentage of rejected beans, but these observations were not consistent over different altitudes. In fact, little is known about the diversity of shade trees and their influence on biochemical compounds. All biochemical compounds varied with the presence of shade, percentage of shade, and elevation. Coffee beans from more diverse tree shade plantations obtained higher scores for final total organoleptic quality than simplified tree shade and unshaded plantations. Decreasing ecological quality diminished ecosystem functions such as pollination, which in turn negatively affected bean quality. Shade affected pests and diseases in different ways, but weeds were reduced. High soil quality positively affected coffee quality. Shade improved the water use efficiency, such that coffee plants were not water stressed and coffee quality was improved. While knowledge on the influence of shade trees on overall coffee quality remains scarce, there is evidence that agroecosystem simplification is negatively correlated with coffee quality. Given global concerns about biodiversity and habitat loss, we recommend that the overall definition of coffee quality include measures of ecological quality, although these aspects are not always detectable in certain coffee quality characteristics or the final cup.

ABSTRACT

The present study had the objective to evaluate the effect of blends of KCl and K2SO4 fertilizers and their influence on the yield and the nutritional state of coffee plants, as well as on the chemical composition and quality of the coffee beverage. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with four repetitions and six treatments (T1: 100% KCl; T2: 75% KCl + 25% K2SO4; T3: 50% KCl + 50% K2SO4; T4: 25% KCl + 75% K2SO4; T5: 100% K2SO4; and a control, without application of K). The following analyses were performed: K and Cl content in the leaves and the soil, stocks of Cl in soil, yield, removal of K and Cl with the beans, cup quality of the beverage, polyphenol oxidase activity (PPO), electric conductivity (EC), potassium leaching (KL), the content of phenolic compounds, the content of total sugars (TS), and total titratable acidity (TTA). The stocks of Cl in the soil decreased as the proportion of KCl in the fertilizer was reduced. The fertilization with KCl reduces the cup quality and the activity of the polyphenol oxidase, probably due to the ion Cl. The increase in the application of Cl directly relates to the increase in potassium leaching, electric conductivity, and titratable acidity. Indirectly, these variables indicate damages to the cells by the use of Cl in the fertilizer. The activity of the polyphenol oxidase enzyme and the cup quality indicate that the ion Cl- reduces the quality of the coffee beverage. K content in the leaves was not influenced by the application of blends of K fertilizer while Cl content increased linearly with KCl applied. The application of KCl and K2SO4 blends influenced coffee yield and the optimum proportion was 25% of KCl and 75% of K2SO4. The highest score in the cup quality test was observed with 100% K2SO4.

ABSTRACT

This study reviews newly discovered insect peptide point mutations as new possible cancer research targets. To interpret newly discovered peptide point mutations in insects as new possible cancer research targets, we focused on the numerous peptide changes found in the 'CSP' family on the sex pheromone gland of the female silkworm moth Bombyx mori. We predict that the Bombyx peptide modifications will have a significant effect on cancer CUP (cancers of unknown primary) therapy and that bacterial peptide editing techniques, specifically Lactobacillus combined to CRISPR, will be used to regulate ribosomes and treat cancer in humans.

ABSTRACT

The aim was to assess and report the effects of menstrual cup on pelvic floor muscles (PFM) function and tone, as well as check the acceptability after a period of three menstrual cycles in healthy young women. The data collected in assessments and reassessments included the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Vaginal Symptoms (ICIQ-VS) questionnaire, evaluation of PFM function through PERFECT Scheme, PFM muscle tone, and PFM manometry (Peritron 9300®). A diary regarding the overall colletor acceptability and satisfaction was collected. Ten healthy young women completed the study. There was an improvement in the mean values of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) (p = 0.032), a decrease in the vaginal resting pressure (VRP) (p = 0.05), and an increase in the number of repetitions of sustained muscle contractions (p = 0.042). Seven women reported some discomfort while using the vaginal cup only in the first cycle while three revealed discomfort during the whole experiment. This study provides preliminary case-based evidence that the use of the vaginal cup for a period of three menstrual cycles changes the VRP, MVC, and PFM tone, as well as improves the repetitions of PFM assessed by digital palpation. Moreover, the women reported the use of vaginal cup as a positive experience.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify the determinants of menstrual cup use among medical students in Brazil. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with an online survey regularly applied to matriculate women from Medical School in January 2021. RESULTS: Of 277 women, 164 participated. The mean age was 22.26 ± 3.21 years. In all 136 women preferred external pads, 60 internal pads, 28 menstrual cups, and 11 did not use. Using a 1-10 scale, price, efficacy, sustainability, practice, vaginal health status, hygiene, and importance of internal genital integrity were investigated. Thirty-seven (22.56%) women related the use of menstrual cups in the last year. Using any method to reduce menstruation had an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of 0.310 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.122-0.787). Concern about the environmental biodegradation had an aOR of 6.369 (95% CI 1.372-29.562); concern about intimal health had an aOR 1.996 (95% CI 1.183-3.368); and concern about internal genital integrity had an aOR of 0.824 (95% CI 0.682-0.995) for menstrual cup use. CONCLUSION: The significant independent factors for the use or adherence to menstrual cups were: women using a method to reduce their menstrual flow; concerning biodegradation; concerning vaginal health; with no concerns about manipulating their genitalia. The menstrual cup was used by 22.56% of a medical school in Brazil among undergraduate women.

ABSTRACT

Rust is the main disease affecting Coffea arabica, the most economically important coffee species. The objective of this study was to analyze C. arabicacultivars with different levels of rust resistance, including bean size, raw bean appearance, finalsensory scores (FSS), and aromaand taste nuances of the coffee cup. The experiment was designed in randomized blocks (RBD) with three replications and 20 treatments (cultivars), totaling 60 experimental plots. The rust-susceptible cultivars IPR 100, Rubi MG 1192, and Topázio MG 1190 were compared with 17 rust-resistant cultivars.Cultivars IPR 103, MGS Aranãs, and SaíraII presented the highest percentages of high sieves, highest scores of raw bean appearance, and low percentages of mocha-type beans. All cultivars had FSS above 82 and were classified as specialty coffees. The cultivars with the highest FSS (Arara and Catiguá MG2) showed a greater diversity of coffee cup aroma and flavor nuances. Rust-resistant Arabica coffee cultivars are promising for the physical quality of beans and have potential for the specialty coffee market.

ABSTRACT

This work characterizes two alternative materials to substitute the most expensive microbial fuel cells (MFCs) components: proton exchange membrane (PEM) and cathode. Crude glycerol biodegradation was studied in MFCs using a clay cup as a PEM and activated carbon and camphor carbon mixture (CAC) as a cathode. The cathode performance was compared with Platinum on carbon cloth. Two clay cup single-chamber MFCs were operated with each cathode and fed with 2000 mg/L of crude glycerol. Electrochemical properties were characterized by linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and chronoamperometry. Biodegradation efficiencies were estimated with the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal percentage. MFCs with CAC showed a maximum power density of 100 mW/m2. This result was a 43.47% power response regarding MFCs with Platinum. COD removal efficiencies of 94% were achieved in 37 days for both cells. The Columbic efficiencies were 24.04% and 22.78% for the MFCs with Platinum and CAC. The economic analysis showed a cost of USD 9.97 for MFCs with CAC. This cost is five times lower than when using Platinum. MFCs utilizing clay cups and CAC showed an acceptable performance for the bioenergy production from crude glycerol biodegradation above all economic advantage in the cell cost.

ABSTRACT

This manuscript highlights the construction of Independência stadium, in Belo Horizonte, MG. In this sense, we analyses methodologically local newspapers that circulated in the city between the years of construction of this stadium (1948/1950), available in physical and digitized collections. As key figures in this process, two characters are crucial: the president of the Sete de Setembro Football Club and the mayor of Belo Horizonte. We argue that both were essential characters for the achievement for the project as they played strategical political deal in different scenarios (CBD, FIFA, sports clubs and also with institutional political agents). Contrary to popular belief (and even in the academic field), this paper reveals that the Independência stadium was not originally designed for hosting the 1950 World Cup. It was rather an investment made by the Sete de Setembro Football Club, which aimed to have an imposing sports complex in the city, and so compete against its main opponents.

ABSTRACT

Metallothionein-like protein concentrations (MT) and three functionally defined fractions of cholinesterase activity (ChE) were quantified in gill and digestive gland homogenates of tropical cup oysters from 5 nearshore locations in the Colombian Caribbean and correlated with sediment and tissue metal (9 metals) and pesticide (22 organophosphates, OPs, and 20 organochlorines-OCPs), as well as water physical-chemical parameters (salinity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen). Tissue and sediment pesticide concentrations were below detection limits in all samples, whereas sediment and tissue metal concentrations exceeded environmental thresholds at several locations. Tissue MT and ChE biomarkers varied by a factor of 5-6 between locations. Inhibition of cholinesterase activity was negligible for all 5 sites, despite spatial-temporal variation in ChE activity, consistent with below-detection OP concentrations. Tissue MT and ChE biomarkers correlated with tissue and metal sediment concentrations, yet, statistically significant covariance between biomarkers and water chemistry parameters was also observed, indicating that both, metal concentrations and physical-chemical variables, are likely to be responsible for generating the observed spatial-temporal variations in biomarker patterns.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This work develops a reading of the 78 World Cup. Universo do futebolby Roberto DaMatta is guide to retrace a set of problems. Method:From a re-reading of testimonies preserved in different formats (periodical press, official documents, audiovisual records and images), the organization and rituals that delimited the 78 World Cup are reconstructed. Results and discussion:The article shows how the preparation of the military government tried to erase the popular heritage of the World Cup put into play by the Peronist governments and how it deployed through the opening ceremony its political imagination and its government project for the Argentine society. Conclusion:By approaching the celebrations of the Argentinean victory in the final, we analyze the mismatches evidenced by that project from celebrations capable of suspending, at least momentarily, the meaning and hierarchies imagined bythe military authorities. Roberto DaMatta's proposal about the relationship between sport and society and his focus on rituals and liminarities continues to be a powerful inspiration to read an extraordinary event such as the World Cup Argentina 78.
