ABSTRACT

Treatments of postsurgical dehorning in cattle usually includes topical application of healing agents in wounds. The Bacterial Nanocellulose (BNC) may come to a complementary treatment for these wounds. Two new complementary treatments with BNC and BNC loaded with nisin were evaluated for wound healing in surgical dehorning in bovine. Hence, two groups of experiments were run, and 12 animals were used in each group. All animals, in right and left horns, received antisepsis treatment. For the first group, the left horn was the control, and on the right one the BNC was applied. For the second group, BNC was applied on the left horn (control) and on the right ones BNC+nisin was applied. In both experiments, wounds were evaluated macroscopically by photographic images and microscopically by histology. For macroscopic evaluations, a significant difference was observed over time, but only in the comparison within the same groups. Microscopic analyzes did not showed significant differences in any type of comparison. In conclusion, there was a clinical improvement in the wound healing response with the application of BNC. However, there was no significant difference between BNC compared to the nisin loaded in BNC. For the first time it was applied a BNC in surgical dehorning wounds in bovines and evaluated the efficacy of treatment in a real animal handling situation.

ABSTRACT

The primary aim of this study was to explore attitudes of urban Brazilian citizens about dairy production. A secondary aim was to determine their knowledge and attitudes about four potentially contentious routine dairy cattle management practices: early cow-calf separation; zero-grazing; culling of newborn male calves; and dehorning without pain mitigation. To address the first aim 40 participants were interviewed using open-ended semi-structured questions designed to probe their views and attitudes about dairy production in Brazil, and 300 participants answered a questionnaire that included an open-ended question about the welfare of dairy cattle. Primary concerns reported by the participants centered on milk quality, which included the rejection of any chemical additives, but also animal welfare, environmental and social issues. The interviewees rarely mentioned animal welfare directly but, when probed, expressed several concerns related to this topic. In particular, participants commented on factors that they perceived to influence milk quality, such as good animal health, feeding, clean facilities, and the need to avoid or reduce the use of drugs, hormones and pesticides, the avoidance of pain, frustration and suffering, and the ability of the animals to perform natural behaviors. To address our second aim, participants were asked questions about the four routine management practices. Although they self-reported being largely unaware of these practices, the majority of the participants rejected these practices outright. These data provide insight that animal welfare may be an important issue for members of the public. Failure to consider this information may increase the risk that certain dairy production practices may not be socially sustainable once lay citizens become aware of them.

ABSTRACT

The bovine actinobacillosis or "wooden tongue" is a sporadic disease that results in granulomatous glossitis of affected animals. The disease is commonly secondary to trauma of the oral cavity by the ingestion of stemmy forage. However there are also reports of atypical actinobacillosis after surgical procedures. It is reported a heifer of Girolanda breed, 15 months old, presenting drooling, tongue protrusion, tongue edema after undergoing the dehorning procedure. The diagnosis was based on clinical history and on bacterial culture for Actinobacillus lignieresii. The animal was subjected to therapy with broad-spectrum antibiotic plus mouthwash with antiseptic solution until complete resolution of the clinical status.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Metal clamps were used in dermal suture of fifty crossbred cattle, of various weight, ranging from 1.5 to 5 years of age; after esthetic dehorning. The animals were operated on differents farms from Goiás State, Brazil, during 1995 and 1996 and evaluated after surgery. Four animals showed serous exudation two days after surgery. One animal had unilateral sinusitis and in other three there were wound dehiscence. The technique proposed was fast; skin divulsion was easier, there was a good hemostasy and cicatrization was esthetic. Metal suture is fast and easily applied.
