ABSTRACT
Abstract The aim of this in vitro study is to investigate the effects of acidic beverages on the discoloration of bulk-fill composites with different viscosities. 144 disc-shaped specimens (8mm diameter × 2mm thick) were prepared from four different composite resins including a nanohybrid (Filtek Ultimate), two packable bulk- fill (Filtek Bulk Fill, Tetric N Ceram Bulk Fill), and a flowable bulk-fill composite (Tetric N Flow Bulk Fill). The specimens of each group were divided into 3 subgroups and submerged in distilled water, orange juice and coke (n=12). Color difference (ΔE) were measured using CIELab color space and a compact spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade) at baseline and after 30 days of immersion. Data were analyzed using two- way ANOVA and Tukeys HSD post-hoc tests (P2.7) was observed for all bulk-fill composites tested. It can be speculated that orange juice has a more negative effect on the color stability compared to coke. Additionally, flowable bulk-fill composite was more prone to discoloration than condensable bulk-fill composites.
Resumen El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar los efectos de las bebidas ácidas en la decoloración de resinas compuestas tipo Bulk con diferentes viscosidades. Se prepararon 144 muestras en forma de disco (8mm de diámetro x 2mm de grosor) a partir de cuatro resinas compuestas diferentes que incluyen un nanohíbrido (Filtek Ultimate), dos de pasta condensables tipo Bulk (Filtek Bulk Fill, Tetric N Ceram Bulk Fill) y una fluida (Tetric N Flow Bulk Fill). Las muestras de cada grupo se dividieron en 3 subgrupos y se sumergieron en agua destilada, jugo de naranja y Coca-Cola (n=12). La diferencia de color (ΔE) se midió utilizando el CIELab y un espectrofotómetro compacto (VITA Easyshade) al inicio y después de 30 días de inmersión. Los datos se analizaron mediante ANOVA bidireccional y pruebas post-hoc HSD de Tukey (P2,7) para todos los materiales resinosos. Se puede especular que el jugo de naranja tiene un efecto más negativo sobre la estabilidad del color en comparación con la Coca-Cola. Además, la resina fluida fue más propensa a la decoloración que las resinas condensables.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effect of different restorative filling techniques on the residual shrinkage stress (ShrS), cuspal strain (CS), depth of cure (DC), and enamel crack formation (Ec) in molars with MOD restorations. METHODS: Post-gel shrinkage, elastic modulus, compressive and diametral tensile strength of the Filtek One Bulk Fill composite were calculated. Sixty molars with MOD preparations were restored using four filling techniques: Bulk; Horizontal; Oblique; Natural enamel and dentin substitution (NEDS) technique. CS was measured using a strain gauge (n = 10). The DC (n = 5) was measured using Knoop hardness. Shrinkage stress/strain was analyzed using 3D finite element analysis. The Ec analysis was carried out by transillumination. Two-way ANOVA with repeated measures and Tukey's HSD test (α = 0.05) was performed for the CS data. Two-Way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test was performed for the DC data (α = 0.05). RESULTS: CS was higher at the lingual cusp for the horizontal and NEDS technique. No statistical difference was found between the buccal and lingual CS values for the Bulk (p = 0.367) or Oblique techniques (p = 0.192). CS values were lower for the Bulk. More enamel cracks were found for the Bulk. DC was lower at 4 mm regardless the filling technique. The Horizontal showed the highest ShrS values. The Bulk generated the lower ShrS values. SIGNIFICANCE: A Bulk technique caused the lowest shrinkage stress/strain. An Oblique technique yielded the best balance between stress, strain and crack formation. NEDS technique is a good alternative to decrease the number of increments while maintaining the stress levels nearby the Oblique technique.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between acid erosion and fluoride release of conventional glass ionomer cements. METHODS: Ten specimens for each material were prepared for fluoride release tests and five for acid erosion tests separately. After placed in pH cycling solution, concentration of fluoride was measured by a fluoride-ion selective electrode each day for 15 days. For the acid erosion test, specimens were immersed in a lactic acid solution and their depth measured with a spring-loaded dial gauge. The data were submitted to 3-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's test (p<0.05) RESULTS: All materials showed ability to elute fluoride in the 15 day period of the test, with the same pattern of high fluoride release at the first 24h. Despite this, the amount of fluoride released was statistically different among the 18 groups, with the highest for Maxxion R and the lowest for Chemfil Rock (p>0.05). The highest acid erosion values were registered for Magic Glass, Ion Z, VitroFil and Maxxion R, which exceeded the maximum stipulated by the relevant ISO test (ISO 9917-1). A positive linear correlation (r2=0.4886) was found for both properties, i.e., higher fluoride release is related to higher acid erosion. SIGNIFICANCE: Acid erosion and fluoride release are related properties of GICs, though factors such as pH and P/L ratio lead to differences between actual values for individual brands of these materials.
