ABSTRACT

This cross-sectional study investigates the association between the main symptoms of Bipolar disorder (BD) and emotional regulation dif-ficulties in adaptive and maladaptive emotional regulation strategies (ERS). In addition, this study examines the possible mediating effects of ERS with dispositional mindfulnessand bipolar symptoms. Method.Twenty-four adults diagnosed with BD completed the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the Altman Mania Self-Assessment Scale (ARSM), the Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-R), and the Cognitive Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). Results. First, mul-tiple regression analysis showed how depression was significantly positively related to self-blame, whereas trait anxietywas positively associated with self-blame and catastrophizing. Second, the results of the mediation analy-sis have shown a significant mediation effect for the self-blamein the rela-tionship between mindfulnessand depression (a*b = -.15; BCI 95% [-.36, -.03]) and between mindfulnessand trait anxiety (a*b = -.09; BCI 95% [-.27, -.01]). Conclusions. Our results report the role of self-blame and catastrophiz-ing in BD and how these might significantly mediate between dispositional mindfulness and symptoms of depression and anxiety. These results suggest that a meditation practice focused on reducing catastrophizing and self-blame may be especially helpful for symptoms of depression and anxiety in bipolar patients.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Aim To explore the neuroproteetion of Chuanxiong injection on post-stroke depression (PSD) and its effeet on cAMP-p-CREB-BDNF pathway in hip¬pocampus. Methods Hats were randomly divided into four groups of sham, model, low-dose ( 0.1 g • kg ~1 ) of Chuanxiong injection and high-dose (0.2 g • kg 1 ) of it.The PSD model was established by middle cere-bral artery occlusion ( MCAO) combined with chronic stress stimulation. After the treatment, the behaviors of rats were observed by the tests of sugar consumption, open-field and Morris water maze. The function and status of neurons in hippocampus CA1 area were detec¬ted by Nissl staining and Neun immunofluorescence. The expressions of cAMP-p-CREB-BDNF pathway pro¬teins in hippocampus were observed by Western blot. Results Both Chuanxiong injection groups of low-dose and high-dose significantly increased consumption of sugar water, horizontal anrl vertical movement scores, decreased total route distance and route near the plat, elevated the number of Nissl body in CA1 area, re¬stored the morphology of Nissl body, and enhanced the expressions of cAMP and p-CREB in hippocampus.Additionally, the high dose group shortened swimming duration, reduced distance ratio of near plat to far from plat, and increased the expressions of Neun and BD- NF.Conclusions Chuanxiong injection has the po¬tential of improving the behavior and neurological func¬tion of PSD rats via up-regulating cAMP-CREB-BDNF pathway, protecting the neurons in hippocampal CA1 area, and ultimately alleviating the cognitive deficiency of PSD rats.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The ageing population currently experienced by Latin America brings with it cha llenges for society, such as the prevention of human rights violation and freedoms of the elderly, and the elimination of all forms of abuse. The prevalence of physical abuse for the elderly was 4.1%. It was mainly presented in women, people without a partner, and with financial income. In addition, it was more prevalent in older people at risk of depression, a history of suicidal thoughts, dissatisfaction with health, and living with dysfunctional families. The findings of this research show how family re lationships can be a key factor in addressing the problem of abuse. In addition, the serious impact of these facts on the victim, such as affectations not only to physical health, but also to mental health.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the curative effect of deep-brain magnetic stimulation (DMS) on learned helplessness behavior in the chronic restrained stress (CRS) rat model. Methods Twenty-nine Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control group (n=8) and CRS group (n=21). CRS group was exerted chronic restrained stress, while the control group did not receive any stress, for three weeks. Then learned helplessness behavior was tested using Forced Swimming Test (FST) and the hopeless rats of the CRS group were divided ran-domly into sham group (n=6), DMS group (n=8) and citalopram group (n=7), that received corresponding treatment respectively. They were evaluated with FST again after one-week treatment. Results The immobile time in FST was longer in CRS group than in the control group after three-week stress (F=11.260, P=0.002). After one-week treatment, no significant improvement was found in the citalopram group (F=1.565, P=0.235), however, the immobile time in DMS group decreased (F=6.277, P=0.025), and was shorter than that in the sham group (F=5.560, P=0.036). Conclusion CRS could result in learned helplessness behavior, which could be alleviated with one-week DMS.
