ABSTRACT

Something is not right in the safety profession. Many books written by professionals in the 2010s express a strong discontent. These professionals are highly critical of their situation, practice, role and identity. In these books, they express what this article describes as the 'blues of safety professionals'. Although varying in writing style, tone, theoretical inspiration, emphasis and experience, they address similar issues which relate to practices corresponding, in their eyes, to outmoded, inadequate or even perverse ideas. The aim of this article is to introduce, summarize, explain and problematize the significance of this literature. Following a methodological section, the 'safety professional blues' is introduced. It is argued in another section that the 'blues' pinpoints what these authors consider to be flawed assumptions about many of the core ingredients of the safety profession. The roots of this discontent are the topic of another section, while a final section problematizes the 'blues'.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: So far, previous research suggests positive effects of mental demands at the workplace. However, it may depend on how stressfull these demands are perceived on an individual level. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to build on previous research by investigating how mental demands are related to stress, overload, and work discontent and whether this relationship is mediated by individuals resources, such as resilience. METHOD: A sub-sample of the LIFE Adult Cohort (n = 480) was asked to answer questions on sociodemographic characteristics, objective stress (using the Trier Inventory of Chronic Stress (TICS)), and perceptions of stress with regard to verbal and executive mental demands at work. RESULTS: According to generalized linear regression models, higher verbal as well as executive mental demands were associated with higher levels of chronic stress, work overload and discontent. Higher levels of resilience were associated with lower levels of these outcomes. Analyses regarding interaction effects revealed that the interaction between resilience and perceived stress of verbal mental demands was significant only in terms of work overload. CONCLUSION: Higher perceived stressfulness of mental demands was associated with higher chronic stress, work overload and work discontent. Therefore, mental demands should be targeted by occupational interventions that aim to improve job conditions and employees' overall well-being. Besides resilience, other potential influencers or personal resources should be focused on in future studies to develop interventions.

ABSTRACT

The last few decades have been marked by discourses that challenge many basic presumptions supporting liberal democracy. Populist parties in particular have raised criticism against democratic systems, and authoritarian programmes have made electoral gains. This article offers the elite's perspective on this phenomenon, which is often discussed in the context of lower income groups. Drawing from qualitative interviews with 90 Finnish top earners, the article shows how wealth elites sustain strong discontent towards liberal democracy and see it as an ineffective and sometimes fundamentally flawed system. They are concerned with its alleged (in)efficiency and disagreements typical of democratic processes and are correspondingly fascinated by solutions that are presented as self-evident but that no one has the courage to execute. In this article, we refer to this type of reasoning by introducing and developing the term unpolitical solutionism, which refers to a preoccupation with quick solutions to complex problems that are political in nature. The concept of unpolitical solutionism builds on discussions of unpolitical democracy (Urbinati) and technosolutionism (Morozov) and brings them to our dialog. By analysing wealth elites' views in a Nordic democracy and by developing the concept of unpolitical solutionism, this article contributes to recent discussions on different forms of unpolitical argumentation in the context of (liberal) economic thinking.

ABSTRACT

Health authorities have highlighted "pandemic fatigue" as a psychological consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and warned that "fatigue" could demotivate compliance with health-related policies and mandates. Yet, fatigue from following the policies of authorities may have consequences far beyond the health domain. Theories from the social sciences have raised that real and perceived costs of policies can also drive sentiments of discontent with the entire political establishment. Integrating theories from the health and social sciences, we ask how pandemic fatigue (i.e., perceived inability to "keep up" with restrictions) developed over the pandemic and whether it fueled political discontent. Utilizing longitudinal and panel surveys collected from September 2020 to July 2021 in eight Western countries (N = 49,116), we analyze: 1) fatigue over time at the country level, 2) associations between pandemic fatigue and discontent, and 3) the effect of pandemic fatigue on political discontent using panel data. Pandemic fatigue significantly increased with time and the severity of interventions but also decreased with COVID-19 deaths. When triggered, fatigue elicited a broad range of discontent, including protest support and conspiratorial thinking. The results demonstrate the significant societal impact of the pandemic beyond the domain of health and raise concerns about the stability of democratic societies, which were already strained by strife prior to the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Happiness is a universal goal that people pursue. Studies of the relationship between obesity and happiness have shown mixed findings. It is uncertain whether an optimum BMI level exists and at what level obesity interferes or interacts with happiness. Guided by the Circle of Discontent Theory, we examined the relationship between obesity and happiness among Chinese residents using the 2014 China Family Panel Studies data. The results reveal an inverted U-shaped relationship between BMI and happiness, with obesity associated with happiness through physical appearance, health, and income. The socioeconomic conditions for the appropriate weight to achieve happiness are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a global health crisis. Consequently, many countries have adopted restrictive measures that caused a substantial change in society. Within this framework, it is reasonable to suppose that a sentiment of societal discontent, defined as generalized concern about the precarious state of society, has arisen. Literature shows that collectively experienced situations can motivate people to help each other. Since societal discontent is conceptualized as a collective phenomenon, we argue that it could influence intention to help others, particularly those who suffer from coronavirus. Thus, in the present study, we aimed (a) to explore the relationship between societal discontent and intention to help at the individual level and (b) to investigate a possible moderating effect of societal discontent at the country level on this relationship. To fulfil our purposes, we used data collected in 42 countries (N = 61,734) from the PsyCorona Survey, a cross-national longitudinal study. Results of multilevel analysis showed that, when societal discontent is experienced by the entire community, individuals dissatisfied with society are more prone to help others. Testing the model with longitudinal data (N = 3,817) confirmed our results. Implications for those findings are discussed in relation to crisis management. Please refer to the Supplementary Material section to find this article's Community and Social Impact Statement.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Overweight or obesity is common in endometrial cancer (EC). This study aimed to examine sociodemographic, clinical, and psychosocial characteristics associated with being discontent with current weight and use of weight control methods among long-term EC survivors. METHODS: Women diagnosed with early-stage EC who participated in the Laparoscopic Approach to Cancer of the Endometrium (LACE) trial (n = 516) were invited to complete a long-term follow-up survey at least 4.5 years after treatment. Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression models adjusted for time since surgery were used to determine factors associated with being discontent with current weight. RESULTS: On average 9 years after surgery, 190/259 (73%) of participants were currently discontent with their weight, and 146 (56%) had used one or more weight loss methods during the past 12 months. Women who were discontent with their weight were more likely to be younger than 70 years (p < 0.000), and used one or more weight loss methods ever or during the past 12 months (p < 0.000). Among the weight loss methods used, exercise (40.1%), meal reductions (52.7%), or fat/sugar reductions (48.5%) were much more commonly reported than fasting (2.6%) or designated weight loss programs (2.3%). CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides evidence that the majority of long-term EC survivors in this clinical trial population are discontent with their weight and over half continue to use multiple methods to lose weight each year. These data indicate that health professionals and lifestyle educators need to assess weight issues, and develop a tailored plan to address the specific needs of long-term survivors to assist them become content with their weight after treatment for EC.

ABSTRACT

Why is discontent with politicians highest among less-educated citizens? Supplementing explanations concerning a lack of resources and knowledge, we examine the cultural distance to many a politician perceived by this group. Inspired by qualitative studies mapping the worldviews of people from the lower social strata, we explore less-educated citizens' perceptions of politicians using in-depth (group) interviews carried out in various regions of the Netherlands (n = 26). Our analysis indicates that this group regards politicians as culturally distant "others" and that this perception goes hand in hand with specific negative evaluations of politicians. This improves our understanding of the much-reported political discontent of these citizens. In moving beyond the often mentioned unspecific divide between the "people" and the "elite", our analysis reveals that our interviewees: (i) consider politicians to be insensitive to the lived experiences of the "common" people, and therefore, question their legitimacy and the policies they propose; (ii) resent their communication styles, which they describe as "beating about the bush" and perceive to be emblematic of indecisiveness and a lack of integrity; and (iii) accuse them of superiority signaling, inspiring feelings of misrecognition and opposition. We conclude with detailing the implications of our findings for (future) research.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, I reconstruct the notion of kratos as a unique and distinguishable mode of political power. My claim will be that kratos encapsulates a specific problem for democracy, in both ancient and modern contexts. Using examples from 5th- and 4th- century Attic tragedy, Old Comedy, and forensic oratory, I show how kratos was used in Athenian cultural and political discourse to convey the irrefutability of a claim, the recognition of prevailing over another, and the sense of having the last word, all of which makes kratic power dependent upon its continued demonstrability. Although the agency of the demos is now largely mediated through representative mechanisms, the peculiarly kratic drive towards 'winning,' with all its inherent instability and vacuity, remains indispensable for democratic legitimacy. In focusing critical attention on kratos and the pathology of winning, I hope to shift discussion from what divides 'elites' from the 'masses,' to a problem shared in common.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article aims to analyse the new ways of dicontents that appear in the contemporaneousness, besides to think the role fullfilled nowdays by the enterprises in the constitution of subjectivities. We used as a main theoretical base the contributions of existential philosophy and existential psychology, that are related to the psychosociology studies. Our conclusions are that the thematization of our existential condition of being-for-death calls into question the project of a subject without limits and omnipotent, which prevails in the dominant subjectivation modes of capitalist society. At the same time, it allows for a broader appropriation of our existence, opening a space for the experience of authenticity.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present study was to provide an empirical verification of the Circle of Discontent with an assessment of its relationship to restrained and uncontrolled eating among children and adolescents. This study examined whether our results confirm a new hypothesized model. The total sample comprised 282 children and adolescents (148 girls and 134 boys; 141 participants with normal body weight and 141 with obesity). The mean age was 12.23 years (SD = 2.80), and the average BMI (body mass index) was 23.29 kg/m2 (SD = 6.27). The following were used: Positive and Negative Affect Scale for Children, Children's Body Image Scale, Figure Rating Scale, Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire and Eating Disorders in Youth. The obtained values of the model fit indices proved the goodness of fit. Our findings show that obesity accompanies body dissatisfaction and uncontrolled and restrictive eating. Moreover, the higher the level of restrictive eating, the lower the level of uncontrolled eating. The relationships between body dissatisfaction, negative affect and restrictive eating, as well as that between uncontrolled eating and high-energy consumption, are significant and positive. Other relationships are non-significant. The above-mentioned relationships established in the Circle of Discontent, as well as relationships of restrained and uncontrolled eating with variables described in the circle, were confirmed. Based on our results, preventive strategies and psychological interventions can be created and may include changes in body image, eating behaviors and emotional functioning.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This theoretical essay discusses some facts related to the abolition of slavery in Brazil, the most important symbolic event in Brazilian history in that it represents the deepest transformation of social rules in the country. Historians report, nevertheless, that such change profoundly embittered former slave owners, to the extent that some of them succumbed to a state of what I would call melancholia, which led, in many cases, to death, madness and suicide. A second facet of the discontent among former slave owners, clearly a criminal one, was also identified, consisting of physical violence and the instrumentalization of political institutions, which ensured the maintenance of the persecution against dark-skinned people. The method utilized in this article is inspired by Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic anthropology, and serves to analyze historical facts, having Freud's metapsychological texts as a main reference. I provide an interpretation of the unconscious dimension of the anti-abolitionist backlash that grew roots in the institutions of the Republic. In contrast, this essay also discusses the need to introduce an adequate penal law that takes into consideration the transatlantic slavery in Brazilian history. I refer, here, to the "Taubira Law", promulgated in France in 2001, which acknowledges transatlantic slavery as a crime against humanity. The analysis of discontent and of the nostalgia of decaying slave owners indicates that the criminal unconsciousness demands adequate legislation, a tool that is particularly important for the process of responsibilization of both subjects and institutions regarding history and its subjective discontent.

ABSTRACT

"Human progress lies in discontent!" was the motto of the Austrian magazine Die Unzufriedene (The Discontented). It was first published in 1923 as an "independent weekly magazine" designed to reach "all women." Yet, it was first and foremost a Social Democratic journal, established to socialize women politically and to obtain women's votes outside the Social Democratic purview in the 1923 National Council elections. Since women's suffrage had been established only a few years earlier, the struggle for women's votes was of utmost importance. This essay argues for understanding the journal as a mode and an instrument for the mobilization of affects for Social Democratic ends. Proposing the concept of affective attachments, it shows how the Austrian Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) used the journal in an ambivalent way to affectively address women and to create political moods that would attract them to the party's political agenda.

ABSTRACT

This paper intends to reflect on the use of technological know-how and its function in subjectivity, placing it as one of the ways of response to the discontent that civilization imposes on the living. The dystopian scenario, offered by the British series Black Mirror in his episode "USS Callister" (E1 T4), is taken as a pretext to consider the problem from some psychoanalytic and philosophical notions

ABSTRACT

Longstanding interest has been directed toward the etiology of sociopolitical attitudes. Personality traits have been posited as antecedents; however, most work addressing such links has been limited to cross-sectional study designs. The current study used data from two large (both Ns > 8,700), longitudinal cohorts of individuals from the United Kingdom who were parent-assessed on a measure of temperament (assessing anxiety, conduct problems, and hyperactivity) at age 5 or 7 years and on a range of sociopolitical attitudes at age 30 or 33 years. In both cohorts, higher levels of childhood conduct problems predicted higher levels of economic and political discontent in adulthood. These associations were still evident when controlling for sex, childhood intelligence, and parental social class. In both cohorts, this pathway was partially mediated by educational attainment and achieved social class. These findings are consistent with the perspective that early-life temperament gives rise to adult political sentiment.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This commentary on David Marks' article on the Homeostatic Theory of Obesity and his Circle of Discontent mechanism for maintaining problematic eating behavior and obesity offers a perspective on the promise and potential of this theory. At the same time, we challenge the author to incorporate more of a process perspective into the theory. This would include greater exploration of how individuals enter and exit this hypothesized Circle of Discontent, how these mechanisms lead to obesity rather than other internalizing or externalizing disorders, and how the interactions among key variables differ for males and females and developmental stages.

ABSTRACT

When eating control is overridden by hedonic reward, a condition of obesity dyshomeostasis occurs. Appetitive hedonic reward is a natural response to an obesogenic environment containing endemic stress and easily accessible and palatable high-energy foods and beverages. Obesity dyshomeostasis is mediated by the prefrontal cortex, amygdala and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The ghrelin axis provides the perfect signalling system for feeding dyshomeostasis, affect control and hedonic reward. Dyshomeostasis plays a central role in obesity causation, the addictions and chronic conditions and in persons with diverse bodies. Prevention and treatment efforts that target sources of dyshomeostasis provide ways of reducing adiposity, ameliorating the health impacts of addiction and raising the quality of life in people suffering from chronic stress.

ABSTRACT

A core symptom of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a severe alteration of body representations. Evidence from somatoperception studies point to a generic disturbances of somatosensory components of body representations. Here we have investigated whether AN patients (N=18) and controls differed in the perception of tactile stimuli differently oriented along the body axes. We tested the hypothesis that patients perceive and represent their body selectively larger in only one dimension. To this aim we used elementary tactile measures for tactile acuity (Von Frey's test and two-point discrimination thresholds - 2PD) and tactile discrimination measures. The rationale is based on the assumption that AN patients have a wider body representation, and that tactile body representation tasks (Tactile Distance task) oriented across the bodies (horizontally) are influenced by distorted body representations compared with tactile stimuli oriented along the bodies (vertically) which should not be influenced by body representations. Results showed that patients judged horizontal tactile stimuli significantly wider than the same stimuli oriented vertically. These results suggest that human brain perceives things differently based on body representations and that the beliefs concerning body size influence the specific somatosensory process of tactile experience.

ABSTRACT

This work is part of a study undertaken between the years of 2010 and 2011 in a program of Master's in Education. The present work discusses the discontent in relationships that occur inside the classrooms today, due to the lack of limits of teenagers. In this article, we present an analysis of a student at age 15, female, which partially answers the demands of school while a fully desiring subject. The material collected for analysis consisted of reports from the artistic creative process and its final product, the object of art done by teenagers. Our research has as framework the studies of Salles on the processes of artistic creation and some psychoanalytic insights about new forms of subjectivity proposed by Birman and Forbes, and finally, the French Discourse Analysis of Pêcheux who understands the discourse as a knitting composed by history, ideology and the unconscious. As a result, we found a change of psychic functioning of nowadays students in relation to the students of the modern era. This change relates to a weakening of desiring attitude toward school and its organization as a whole. In other words, teens are no longer seeing the school as an object of desire. We are facing an ambivalence of the student subject, a subject who, nowadays, is unable to make himself/herself as fully desiring the way the school still craves in contemporaneity.
