ABSTRACT

Milk and dairy products represent important sources of nutrition in our daily lives. The identification of species within dairy products holds importance for monitoring food adulteration and ensuring traceability. This study presented a method that integrated double-tube and duplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with multiplex TaqMan probes to enable the high-throughput detection of animal-derived ingredients in milk and dairy products. The detection system utilized one pair of universal primers, two pairs of specific primers, and eight animal-derived specific probes for cow, buffalo, goat, sheep, camel, yak, horse, and donkey. These components were optimized within a double-tube and four-probe PCR multiplex system. The developed double-tube detection system could simultaneously identify the above eight targets with a detection limit of 10-0.1 pg/µL. Validation using simulated adulterated milk samples demonstrated a detection limit of 0.1%. The primary advantage of this method lies in the simplification of the multiplex quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) system through the use of universal primers. This method provides an efficient approach for detecting ingredients in dairy products, providing powerful technical support for market supervision.

ABSTRACT

The Double-tube heat exchanger (DTHX) is widely favored across various industries due to its compact size, low maintenance requirements, and ability to operate effectively in high-pressure applications. This study explores methods to enhance heat transfer within a DTHX using both experimental and numerical approaches, specifically by integrating a nail rod insert (NRI). A steel nails rod insert, 1000 mm in length, is introduced into the DTHX, which is subjected to turbulent flows characterized by Reynolds numbers ranging from 3200 to 5700. Three different pitches of NRI (100 mm, 50 mm, and 25 mm) are investigated. The results indicate a significant increase in the Nusselt (Nu) number upon the insertion of nail rods, with further improvements achievable by reducing the pitch length. Particularly noteworthy is the Nu number enhancement ratio for the 25 mm pitch NRI, which is 1.81-1.9 times higher than that for the plain tube. However, it is observed that pressure drop increases in all configurations with NRI due to heightened turbulence and obstruction by the NRI. Among the various pitch lengths, the 25 mm pitch exhibits the highest pressure drop values. Moreover, exergy efficiency is found to improve across all cases with NRI, corresponding to increased heat transfer, with the 25 mm pitch length showing a remarkable 128% improvement. Numerical analysis reveals that the novel insert enhances flow turbulence through the generation of secondary flows, thereby enhancing heat transfer within the DTHX. This study provides a comprehensive analysis, including temperature, velocity, and pressure drop distributions derived from numerical simulations.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Subdural empyema (SE) following chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) surgery is an uncommon but serious complication. The best treatment approach, typically a choice between craniotomy and burr hole surgery, is still debated. This case report introduces an innovative method using burr hole surgery with double-tube irrigation, a potentially effective alternative to the more invasive craniotomy. CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old male, 48 days post-CSDH surgery, developed SE with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection. The initial treatment with burr hole drainage was complicated by recurrence, leading to a second procedure with double tubes inserted anteriorly and posteriorly for continuous irrigation therapy. The patient was treated with systemic antibiotics and vancomycin irrigation, resulting in successful resolution without further recurrence. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: While burr hole surgery is often deemed less effective than craniotomy for SE, this case demonstrates the potential efficacy of double-tube irrigation via burr hole surgery. This method could be especially beneficial when craniotomy poses significant risks. Continuous irrigation could help in managing intracranial pressure, making the intervention safer. However, further research is needed to refine this technique and establish clear treatment guidelines. CONCLUSION: Burr hole surgery with double-tube irrigation emerges as a promising treatment option for SE, especially when craniotomy is not feasible. This approach's success in this case encourages further exploration and study to validate its wider application in similar clinical scenarios.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to improve the quality of semen samples by using a novel double-tube (DT) method. The DT method was developed to select sperm and compared with traditional swim-up (SU) technique for 31 semen samples. Sperm DNA integrity were tested with TUNEL and SCSA. Content of antisperm antibodies (ASA) in the semen was measured by ELISA and MAR. Levels of the caspase-3 in the sperm were assessed by western blotting. After SU and DT, 15 couples and 16 couples were underwent IVF-ET. The number of RCDs, the percentage of SDF and DFI, ASA and the level of caspase-3 were significantly decreased after DT and SU (p = .001 and p< .001). When the DT and SU compared, there were significant changes in the number of RCD, the percentage of SDF and DFI, ASA and the level of caspase-3 (p< 0.05-0.001). There was a higher cleavage rate (p = .017) and a lower abortion rate (p< .05) in DT-IVF group than in SU-IVF group. DT selection yielded spermatozoa with low RCDs, DFI, ASA, and caspase-3 which would be benefit for ART.

ABSTRACT

The placement of the flexible ureteroscopic sheath during lithotripsy may injure the ureter. We have developed a double-tube flexible ureteral access sheath. Thirteen patients with renal calculi were treated with double-tube and flexible sheath in one stage. CT examination of 13 cases showed that the ureter was normal. The double-tube flexible ureteral access sheath makes the operation of sheathing easy, safe and effective.

@#Objective     To compare the efficacy of the single tube (ST) and double tube (DT) for closed thoracic drainage after lobectomy. Methods     The PubMed, Medline, EMbase, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang Database, VIP database and CBMdisc from inception to March 30, 2018 were searched by computer to identify randomized controlled trial (RCT) about ST and DT drainage after lobectomy. Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria the literature was screened. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software. Results     Twelve RCTs were enrolled in this meta-analysis, including 1 442 patients. Compared with the patients using DT after lobectomy, the patients using ST had significantly less postoperative pain (MD=–0.64, 95%CI –0.71 to –0.56, P<0.000 01) and shorter duration of drainage (MD=–0.62, 95%CI –0.78 to –0.46, P<0.000 01) and hospital stay (MD=–0.55, 95%CI –0.80 to –0.29, P<0.000 1). Besides, there was no significant difference in postoperative complications (RR=1.11, 95%CI 0.83 to 1.49, P=0.49), air leaks (RD=0.03, 95%CI –0.02 to 0.08, P=0.19) and the redrainage rate (RR=0.89, 95%CI 0.51 to 1.54, P=0.67). Conclusion    ST drainage after lobectomy is effective, which reduces postoperative pain and duration of hospital stay and drainage, and moreover, does not increase the postoperative complications and redrainage rate.
