ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Microbiomes are generally characterized by high diversity of coexisting microbial species and strains, and microbiome composition typically remains stable across a broad range of conditions. However, under fixed conditions, microbial ecology conforms with the exclusion principle under which two populations competing for the same resource within the same niche cannot coexist because the less fit population inevitably goes extinct. Therefore, the long-term persistence of microbiome diversity calls for an explanation. RESULTS: To explore the conditions for stabilization of microbial diversity, we developed a simple mathematical model consisting of two competing populations that could exchange a single gene allele via horizontal gene transfer (HGT). We found that, although in a fixed environment, with unbiased HGT, the system obeyed the exclusion principle, in an oscillating environment, within large regions of the phase space bounded by the rates of reproduction and HGT, the two populations coexist. Moreover, depending on the parameter combination, all three major types of symbiosis were obtained, namely, pure competition, host-parasite relationship, and mutualism. In each of these regimes, certain parameter combinations provided for synergy, that is, a greater total abundance of both populations compared to the abundance of the winning population in the fixed environment. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this modeling study show that basic phenomena that are universal in microbial communities, namely, environmental variation and HGT, provide for stabilization and persistence of microbial diversity, and emergence of ecological complexity.

ABSTRACT

Water treatment has turned out to be more important in most societies due to the expansion of most economies and to advancement of industrialization. Developing efficient materials and technologies for water treatment is of high interest. Thin film nanocomposite membranes are regarded as the most effective membranes available for salts, hydrocarbon, and environmental pollutants removal. These membranes improve productivity while using less energy than conventional asymmetric membranes. Here, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes have been successfully modified via dip single-step coating by silica-aminopropyl triethoxysilane/trimesic acid/melamine nanocomposite (Si-APTES-TA-MM). The developed membranes were evaluated for separating the emulsified oil/water mixture, the surface wettability of the membrane materials is therefore essential. During the conditioning step, that is when the freshwater was introduced, the prepared membrane reached a flux of about 27.77 L m-2 h-1. However, when the contaminated water was introduced, the flux reached 18 L m-2 h-1, alongside an applied pressure of 400 kPa. Interestingly, during the first 8 h of the filtration test, the membrane showed 90 % rejection for ions including Mg2+, and SO42- and ≈100 % for organic pollutants including pentane, isooctane, toluene, and hexadecane. Also, the membrane showed 98 % rejection for heavy metals including strontium, lead, and cobalt ions. As per the results, the membrane could be recommended as a promising candidate to be used for a mixture of salt ions, hydrocarbons, and mixtures of heavy metals from wastewater.

ABSTRACT

Vietnam's government is considering introducing a carbon market as part of its decarbonization strategy. The carbon tax is an option for the government to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. We evaluate the potential macroeconomic and climate impacts of carbon tax policy in Vietnam using a unique data set and simulation analysis with a multi-sector dynamic computable general equilibrium model. The model allows for firm heterogeneity: domestic firms and foreign-invested enterprises. The results show that with plausible tax rates, emissions can be reduced to levels 1.3-2.8 percent below the target value of emissions in 2030. The cost is a loss in GDP by 1.2-2.7 percent in 2030. The results also show that foreign-invested enterprises tend to increase emissions in the medium run even with a carbon tax while a carbon tax is more effective when applied to domestic firms. In addition, a substantial reduction in emissions from the energy sector and improvement in energy efficiency are keys to success in carbon abatement.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have explored the effect of differing heat and relative humidity (RH) environments on the performance of multiple anaerobic high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Still, its impact on physiological responses and performance following aerobic HIIT has not been well studied. This study examined the effects of differing RH environments on physiological responses and performance in college football players following HIIT. Twelve college football completed HIIT under four different environmental conditions: (1) 25 °C/20% RH (Control group); (2) 35 °C/20% RH (H20 group); (3) 35 °C/40% RH (H40 group); (4) 35 °C/80% RH (H80 group). The heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), lactate, tympanic temperature (TT), skin temperature (TS), thermal sensation (TS), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded continuously throughout the exercise. The heart rate variability (HRV): including root mean squared differences of the standard deviation (RMSSD)、standard deviation differences of the standard deviation (SDNN)、high frequency (HF), low frequency (LF), squat jump height (SJH), cycling time to exhaustion (TTE), and sweat rate (SR) were monitored pre-exercise and post-exercise. The HR, MAP, lactate, TT, Ts, TS, and RPE in the 4 groups showed a trend of rapid increase, then decreased gradually. There was no significant difference in HR, MAP, TT, or RPE between the 4 groups at the same time point (p > 0.05), in addition to this, when compared to the C group, the lactate, Ts, TS in the other 3 groups significant differences were observed at the corresponding time points (p < 0.05). The RMSSD, SDNN, HF, and LF levels in the 4 groups before exercise were not significantly different. The RMSSD and HF in the H40 and H80 groups were significantly decreased and other HRV indicators showed no significant difference after exercise. In sports performance measurement, the SJH and TTE were significantly decreased, but there was no significant difference in the 4 groups. The SR was no significant difference in the 4 groups after exercise. In conclusion, heat and humidity environments elicited generally greater physiological effects compared with the normal environment but did not affect sports performance in college football players.

ABSTRACT

The detection of uranium in drinking water has ignited concerns among the public, regulators, and policymakers, particularly as around 1% of the 55,554 water samples in India have shown uranium levels surpassing the 60 µg/l guideline established by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) based on radiological toxicity. Further, the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS), has given a limit of 30 µg/l, which is derived from World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Besides the chemical and radiological aspects associated with uranium, factors such as technological constraints in water purification, waste management, environmental factors, and socio-economic conditions significantly influence these guideline values, which are often overlooked. This manuscript explores the variations in approaches for establishing guideline values and highlights the uncertainties arising from dependence on various variables such as intake and usage patterns, inter- and intra-species distinctions, and epidemiological data. A critical analysis indicates that adherence to global guidelines may result in some undesirable environmental issues. By considering factors such as population dynamics, socio-economic conditions, and geological influences, we suggest that limit of 60 µg/l for uranium in drinking water is appropriate for India.

ABSTRACT

Bioaerosols are more likely to accumulate in the residential environment, and long-term inhalation may lead to a variety of diseases and allergies. Here, we studied the distribution, influencing factors and diffusion characteristics of indoor and outdoor microbiota pollution in six residential buildings in Guangzhou, southern China over a period of one year. The results showed that the particle sizes of bioaerosol were mainly in the range of inhalable particle size (<4.7 µm) with a small difference among four seasons (74.61 % ± 2.17 %). The microbial communities showed obvious seasonal differences with high abundance in summer, but no obvious geographical differences. Among them, the bacteria were more abundant than the fungi. The dominant microbes in indoor and outdoor environments were similar, with Anoxybacillu, Brevibacillus and Acinetobacter as the dominant bacteria, and Cladosporium, Penicillium and Alternaria as the dominant fungi. The airborne microbiomes were more sensitive to temperature and particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) concentrations. Based on the Sloan neutral model, bacteria were more prone to random diffusion than fungi, and the airborne microbiome can be randomly distributed in indoor and outdoor environments and between the two environments in each season. Bioaerosol in indoor was mainly from outdoor. The health risk evaluation showed that the indoor inhalation risks were higher than those outdoor. The air purifier had a better removal efficiency on 1.1-4.7 µm microorganisms, and the removal efficiency on Gram-negative bacteria was better than that on Gram-positive bacteria. This study is of great significance for the risk assessment and control of residential indoor bioaerosol exposure.

OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent worldwide; however, few large population-based studies have examined occupational risk factors. We examined associations between shift work, work schedule, hours worked, outdoor work, occupation and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels in the US working population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 8601 workers from the 2005-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycles. NHANES occupational data were supplemented with measures of outdoor work from the Occupational Information Network. Serum 25(OH)D concentration in nanomoles per litre (nmol/L) was categorised as sufficient (≥75), insufficient (50-<75), moderately deficient (30-<50) and severely deficient (<30). Age-adjusted weighted multinomial and binary logistic regression were used to examine associations between work-related factors and vitamin D status with sex-race/ethnicity stratification. RESULTS: Shift workers had higher odds of severe vitamin D deficiency compared with day workers (OR: 1.64, 95% CI 1.22 to 2.19). Compared with those in white-collar occupations, those in natural resources were less likely to be deficient (OR: 0.31, 95% CI 0.19 to 0.52), while those in production were more likely to be deficient (OR: 2.25, 95% CI 1.48 to 3.43). Women working ≥40 hours/week compared with <40 hours/week were more likely to be moderately deficient (OR: 1.30, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.59). Black women working in sales were more likely to be deficient than those in management (OR: 1.53, 95% CI 1.03 to 2.27). Mexican American men working nights had the highest odds of deficiency (OR: 2.64, 95% CI 1.38 to 5.06). CONCLUSIONS: Work-related factors were associated with vitamin D status and there were race/ethnicity and sex differences. Targeted vitamin D screening and supplementation interventions may reduce these disparities.

ABSTRACT

While the biological hallmarks of aging are widely recognized as fundamental mechanisms of biological aging, more recently, there have been calls within geroscience to understand the aging process more comprehensively by adding a perspective of the social hallmarks of aging. Social and behavioral factors, such as socioeconomic status, life events or behavior and beliefs can alter the aging process per se and act in complex interactions with biological pathways. In addition, underlying biological pathways have been proposed for various psychosocial concepts, such as views on age and relationship quality. The aim of the present article is to provide narrative insights into theoretical and empirical developments between social and behavioral gerontology and geroscience or biogerontology. This article focuses on the potential of an interdisciplinary aging research but it also sets out the critical perspective that social gerontology provides.

Multi-environment trials (MET) are crucial for selecting genotypes that are well-suited to different environmental conditions. Incorporating multiple traits in the analysis can provide more reliable recommendations for selecting genotypes with desirable traits, including resistance to the Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Virus (MYMV) and high yield potential. The use of a Multi-Trait Stability Index (MTSI) is a good approach for analyzing the stability of genotypes across multiple traits under MYMV stress. In the present investigation, the performance of thirteen green gram genotypes were evaluated for traits such as yield, plant height, number of branches per plant, and resistance to MYMV. The main objective of the study is to identify highly productive and stable mung bean genotypes resistant to MYMV. MTSI can be calculated by combining information on the performance of genotypes across multiple traits and environmental conditions to provide a single index that indicates the overall stability of genotypes across traits and environments. The results helped to identify two green gram genotypes (Yadadri and JNG-18) that were high-yielding with stable resistance to MYMV stress across multiple environmental conditions. This can provide useful information to breeders for the development of suitable genotypes against MYMV in the affected areas.

Environmental gradients have the potential to influence genetic differentiation among populations ultimately leading to allopatric speciation. However, environmental gradients can also facilitate hybridization between closely related taxa. We investigated a putative hybrid zone in western Ecuador, involving two polytypic wren species (Aves: Troglodytidae), Campylorhynchus zonatus and C. fasciatus. Our study addressed two primary questions: (1) Is there evidence of population structure and genetic admixture between these taxa in western Ecuador? and (2) What are the relative contributions of isolation by distance and isolation by the environment to the observed genetic differentiation along the environmental gradient in this region? We analyzed 4409 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 112 blood samples sequenced using ddRadSeq and a de novo assembly. The optimum number of genetic clusters ranged from 2 to 4, aligning with geographic origins, known phylogenetics, and physical or ecological constraints. We observed notable transitions in admixture proportions along the environmental gradient in western Ecuador between C. z. brevirostris and the northern and southern genetic clusters of C. f. pallescens. Genetic differentiation between the two C. f. pallescens populations could be attributed to an unreported potential physical barrier in central western Ecuador, where the proximity of the Andes to the coastline restricts lowland habitats, limiting dispersal and gene flow, especially among dry-habitat specialists. The observed admixture in C. f. pallescens suggests that this subspecies may be a hybrid between C. z. brevirostris and C. fasciatus, with varying degrees of admixture in western Ecuador and northwestern Peru. We found evidence of isolation by distance, while isolation by the environment was less pronounced but still significant for annual mean precipitation and precipitation seasonality. This study enhances our understanding of avian population genomics in tropical regions.

ABSTRACT

Description Research shows that when educational leaders support their learners' autonomy, it positively impacts both parties. This is particularly important in graduate medical education (GME), given that there is a strong emphasis on resident performance, evaluation, and development. Unfortunately, GME faculty often misunderstand autonomy as the resident's desire for independence or "freedom," when in fact it refers to the core psychological need to feel volitional and agentic. The distinction is important because volition is not synonymous with independence, and providing freedom can be at odds with strategies that provide true autonomy support. This, in turn, can contribute to the stress, maladjustment, and resident burnout that are already prevalent in medicine. To help remedy this issue, this paper provides an evidence-based guide for medical educators to distinguish autonomy from independence, with specific examples to help translate theory into practice to better support the well-being of the medical community.

BACKGROUND: Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) develops in response to repeated small-level chemical exposures or a major exposure in a subset of people, who then experience symptoms that can range from mild to debilitating when exposed to chemicals. The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic and the stringent health measures put in place may have increased the burden for those living with MCS, as it became more challenging to avoid chemicals that trigger their condition. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to better understand the lived experience of Canadians living with MCS during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: An online questionnaire was created to ask participants to compare daily living during the pandemic to before March 11, 2020. Data were collected in January and February 2021. Three areas were investigated: (1) environmental exposures to chemical triggers from ambient air (pollution from industry, farming, and traffic) and indoor air (the smell of cleaning products, cooking odors, and smoke); (2) access to, and satisfaction with, health care visits; and (3) how people experiencing MCS rated contact with their social network. RESULTS: In all, 119 Canadians who had lived with MCS for more than a year completed the questionnaire. The participant sample was mostly female (86.6%, n=103) and highly educated, with 57.1% (n=68) having a university degree. Slightly more than half (57.1%, n=68) were older than 55 years. McNemar chi-square and Wilcoxon signed rank tests were used to evaluate if there were statistically significant changes before ("prepandemic period") and after ("postpandemic period") March 11, 2020. Perceived exposure to pollution from a highway or a road was significantly decreased from the prepandemic to postpandemic period (z=-3.347; P<.001). Analysis of industry or power plants also suggested a significant decrease in the perceived exposure from the prepandemic to postpandemic period (z=-2.152; P=.04). Participants reported an increase in exposure to odors from disinfectants or sanitizers that entered their living environment (P<.001). There was a significant decrease between prepandemic and postpandemic levels of satisfaction when attending in-person meetings with a physician (z=-2.048; P=.04), yet there were no significant differences between prepandemic and postpandemic levels of satisfaction for online or telephone meetings with a physician. Although people with MCS experienced increased social isolation (P<.001), they also reported an increase in understanding from family (P=.03) and a decrease in stigma for wearing personal protective equipment (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, people with MCS were impacted by inaccessibility, loss of social support, and barriers to accessing health care. This study highlights unique challenges and possible benefits associated with the COVID-19 pandemic public health measures for individuals living with MCS. These findings can guide decision makers to improve policies on accessibility through appropriate accommodation measures.

Biodegradable plastics are being the substitute for synthetic plastics and widely been used in order to combat plastic pollution. Yet not all biodegradable plastics are degradable especially when it does not meet its favourable conditions, and also when it comes to aquatic environments. Therefore, this review is intended to highlight the types of various biodegradable plastic synthesized and commercialised and identify the limitations and advantages of these micro-bioplastics or residual bioplastic upon degradation in various aquatic environments. This review paper highlights on biodegradable plastic, degradation of biodegradable plastic in aquatic environments, application of biodegradable plastic, polylactic acid (PLA), Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), Polysaccharide derivatives, Poly (amino acid), polycaprolactone (PCL), polybutylene succinate (PBS), polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBA/T), limitations and advantages of biodegradable plastic degradation in aquatic environment. There is no limit on the period for literature search as this field is continuously being studied and there is no wide range of studies. Biodegradable plastic that is commercially available has its own advantages and limitations respectively upon degradation in both freshwater and marine environments. There is a growing demand for bioplastic as an alternative to synthetic plastic which causes plastic waste pollution. Thus, it is crucial to understand the biodegradation of biodegradable plastic in depth especially in aquatic environments. Moreover, there are also very few studies investigating the degradation and migration of micro-bioplastics in aquatic environments.

ABSTRACT

Currently, microbial contamination issues have globally brought out a huge health threat to human beings and animals. To be specific, microorganisms including bacteria and viruses display durable ecological toxicity and various diseases to aquatic organisms. In the past decade, the photocatalytic microorganism inactivation technique has attracted more and more concern owing to its green, low-cost, and sustainable process. A variety kinds of photocatalysts have been employed for killing microorganisms in the natural environment. However, two predominant shortcomings including low activity of photocatalysts and diverse impacts of water characteristics are still displayed in the current photocatalytic disinfection system. So far, various strategies to improve the inherent activity of photocatalysts. Other than the modification of photocatalysts, the optimization of environments of water bodies has been also conducted to enhance microorganisms inactivation. In this mini-review, we outlined the recent progress in photocatalytic sterilization of microorganisms. Meanwhile, the relevant methods of photocatalyst modification and the influences of water body characteristics on disinfection ability were thoroughly elaborated. More importantly, the relationships between strategies for constructing advanced photocatalytic microorganism inactivation systems and improved performance were correlated. Finally, the perspectives on the prospects and challenges of photocatalytic disinfection were presented. We sincerely hope that this critical mini-review can inspire some new concepts and ideas in designing advanced photocatalytic disinfection systems.

The framework in which students evolve can be worked on from enabling environments. They support capabilities and could facilitate the construction of skills. They require a humanist and caring posture from professionals to each other in line with the values of the profession.

ABSTRACT

Aberrant functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a hallmark of conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Early-life adversity and genetic variation can interaction to disrupt HPA axis regulation, potentially contributing to certain forms of psychopathology. This study employs a rhesus macaque model to investigate how early parental neglect interacts with a single nucleotide polymorphism within the promoter region of the corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH-248) gene, impacting the development of the HPA axis. For the initial six months of life, 307 rhesus monkey infants (n = 146 females, n = 161 males) were either reared with their mothers (MR) in conditions emulating the natural environment (control group) or raised without maternal care in groups with constant or 3-hours daily access to same-aged peers (NR). Blood samples collected on days 30, 60, 90, and 120 of life under stressful conditions were assayed for plasma cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) concentrations. Findings revealed that NR subjects exhibited a significant blunting of both ACTH and cortisol concentrations. Notably, there was a gene-by-environment interaction observed for ACTH and cortisol levels, with NR subjects with the polymorphism displaying higher ACTH concentrations and lower cortisol concentrations. To the extent that these results generalize to humans, they suggest that early parental neglect may render individuals vulnerable to HPA axis dysfunction, a susceptibility that is modulated by CRH-248 genotype-a gene-by-environment interaction that leaves a lasting developmental signature.

ABSTRACT

Clarifying the spatio-temporal evolution of the ecological environment quality of a watershed and its response to the natural environment and human factors are crucial for policy implementation in the ecological environment of the watershed. Using the Google earth engine(GEE) to establish a remote sensing ecological index (RSEI), the spatio-temporal changes in the ecological environment quality of the Huaihe River Basin from 2002 to 2022 were evaluated combined with trend analysis, variation coefficient, and Hurst index. The main driving factors of spatial differentiation of RSEI were explored using the geographic detector. The results showed that: ① In the past 21 years, RSEI of the Huaihe River Basin had generally improved, but it showed a gradual upward-downward trend. Overall, the area of poor and less poor grades decreased, the area of medium grades increased, and the area of good and excellent grades increased. The improved area accounted for 55.93%, and the degraded area accounted for 22.01%. ② In terms of spatial distribution, RSEI gradually deteriorated from east to west (except in the northwest and southwest marginal mountainous areas). The stability was better in the east and worse in the western and central areas. In the future, the ecological quality change in the basin was prone to be anti-sustainable and mainly improved. ③ Factor detection results showed that the spatial differentiation of RSEI in the basin was mainly driven by vegetation factors, followed by altitude. The interaction between two factors enhanced the driving force for RSEI spatial differentiation, in which the interaction between vegetation factor and elevation had the strongest driving force for RSEI spatial differentiation, reaching 86.3%.

ABSTRACT

Assessment and monitoring of the quality of the ecological environment in the area is a very important fundamental task in the development of ecological civilization in the Xiaojiang River Basin in Yunnan Province, which serves as a demonstration area for ecological restoration in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The Landsat remote sensing images from 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 were chosen, and the four indexes of greenness (NDMVI), humidity (WET), dryness (NDBSI), and heat (LST) were extracted. The remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) was created using the principal component analysis method, then the spatial and temporal patterns and trends of ecological quality in the Xiaojiang River Basin between 1990 and 2022 were examined using the GEE platform, ArcGIS 10.7 platform, and Python platform, combining the analysis methods of geographic information mapping, coefficient of variation, Mann-Kendall trend test, Sen's slope estimation, and Hurst's index. The findings demonstrated that: ① the ecological quality of the study area had more obvious geographic differentiation spatially, and by 2022, the areas with excellent and good ecological quality grades were primarily distributed in the areas with better alpine vegetation cover, and those with poor ecological quality were primarily distributed in the areas of the mudslide ravines with relatively low terrain. On a time scale, the study area's RSEI index increased from 0.41 in 1990 to 0.55 in 2022, with a fluctuating overall trend of ecological quality improvement and an average increase of 0.048(10 a) -1; this progress was directly related to a number of ecological construction initiatives that have been energetically carried out, such as converting farms to forests, preventing mudslides, saving soil and water, managing heavy metal contamination, etc. ② The RSEI was more appropriate for the evaluation of ecological quality in alpine ravine areas because, in comparison to the NDVI index, the NDVMI adopted in this study was more sensitive to vegetation information in topographic undulation areas, especially in shaded areas, and could more accurately and quantitatively describe the vegetation information. ③ The RSEI in the Xiaojiang River Basin had a mean coefficient of variation of 0.202. Overall, its volatility was low, and its high volatility was mostly concentrated in the mudslide gully area along both sides of the Xiaojiang River fracture zone, where the surface was made up of bare rocks and sediment that was easily impacted by the changing of the seasons, the climate, and human activity. ④ The quality of the ecological environment in the region was significantly improving, with the rising area reaching 85.72% of the total area and the declining area accounting for approximately 10.15% of the total area. The future trend of change will be dominated by ongoing improvement and future degradation, accounting for 44.75% and 39.97%, respectively. It is important to pay close attention to areas that could potentially degrade. The findings of this study can serve as a theoretical foundation for additional ecological environmental conservation, management, and sustainable development in the Xiaojiang River Basin.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to summarize current knowledge from twin studies on migraine. Migraine heritability, genetic correlations with migraine comorbid disorders, and the use of discordant twin pairs in migraine research are described. Further, the review considers the unused potential of twin studies in migraine research and reflects on future directions. BACKGROUND: Twin studies can be used to understand how heritable and environmental factors influence human traits and disorders. The classical twin design compares the resemblance of a trait in monozygotic twins to that in dizygotic twins. The classical twin design can be extended to estimate the genetic correlation between disorders, model causality, and describe differences within discordant twin pairs. METHODS: Studies focusing on migraine and using a twin study design were included. The search was performed on the PubMed-MEDLINE database using the search terms "migraine" AND "twin" OR "twins." It was done in May 2023, rerun in November 2023, and managed with the Covidence software. RESULTS: The search identified 52 twin studies on migraine. In 24 papers, the heritability of migraine was estimated with a classical twin design. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.36 to 0.48 for studies with adults, both men and women, and unspecified migraine. Migraine heritability was predominantly estimated with twin cohorts of North European ancestry, and only two studies examined migraine subtypes. A multilevel classical twin design was used in 11 studies to examine the co-occurrence between migraine and comorbid disorders. The differences within migraine discordant twin pairs were examined in nine studies. CONCLUSION: The heritability of migraine was estimated with a classical twin design in twin cohorts from seven different countries, with remarkably similar results across studies. Future studies should include migraine subtypes and twin cohorts of non-North European ancestry to better reflect the global population. Beyond heritability estimations, the twin method is a valuable tool for understanding causality and describing differences within discordant twin pairs. Despite more than 80 years of twin studies in migraine research, the twin design has a large unused potential to advance our understanding of migraine.

ABSTRACT

Groundwater irrigation districts, which play a crucial role in the Earth's critical zone, are confronted with numerous challenges, including water scarcity, pollution, and ecological degradation. These issues come from multiple systems and are linked to a groundwater-dominated water-food-environment-ecosystem nexus problem related to agricultural activities (WFEE). There is a pressing need for the scientific characterization and evaluation of the WFEE nexus in groundwater irrigation districts to assure high-quality, sustainable development. Furthermore, it is critical to provide practical and efficient regulations at the farmer level to uphold the health of this nexus. This paper presents a mapping network that focuses on groundwater irrigation districts. The network aims to convert the restriction indicators utilized to maintain the health of the WFEE nexus (at the irrigation district scale) into the targets employed to manage farmers' living and agricultural activities (at the farmer scale). Additionally, a system dynamics model is created to track and manage the interacting relationships between the WFEE nexus and farmers' living and agricultural activities. This proposed model employs a structured parameter system comprising targets, state parameters, regulatory parameters, and evaluation parameters. This system can get insight into the status of the WFEE nexus at the farmer level using state parameters, induce tailored management and regulation measures using regulatory parameters, assess the effectiveness of various measures using the evaluation parameters, and finally provide decision support to enhance the health of the WFEE nexus. The findings from the research conducted in the Yong'an groundwater irrigation district demonstrated that the model accurately described the relationship between the WFEE nexus and farmers' activities in groundwater irrigation districts. Furthermore, the model responded strongly to a variety of improvement strategies, including adjustments in planting area, optimization of planting pattern, improvement of irrigation method, and implementation of agronomic measures. As a result, it provided farmers with decision support for applying agricultural management methods and addressing the WFEE nexus problem in groundwater irrigation areas.
