ABSTRACT

This report updates our understanding of whale shark occurrences in The Bahamas by drawing upon a variety of data sources. Our findings reveal previously unreported sighting locations, often associated with tourism activities, underscoring the pivotal role played by nontraditional data sources in addressing knowledge gaps. These revelations emphasize the ongoing necessity for monitoring efforts. Additionally, we have found cases that raise concerns related to unregulated human-shark interactions in the region, highlighting the pressing need for sustainable tourism practices within Bahamian waters.

ABSTRACT

Designing Augmented Reality (AR) throughout service experiences remains under studied in several industries, despite the fact of growing consumer interest and use through different platforms and applications globally. Consequently, there is growing interest in understanding the what, the why and the how for designing AR applications in practice to boost ecotourism experiences, with the purpose of enhancing customer value creation and organizations differentiation. Consequently, the authors conducted an eleven-month practical theoretical study in 10 ecotourism SMEs purposefully recruited in Latin America, adopting service design as a main research framework. Using interviews, contextual analyses, buyer personas, observation, storytelling creation sessions, prototyping sessions and accompaniment sessions as research methods, researchers studied, (1) what were the key facilitators and hinderers for designing AR in practice at the SMEs ecotourism context following a service design lens and, (2) how the inherent principles of service design influence ecotourism SME's for the strategically adoption of AR in their service experiences. The study suggests key elements that can facilitate or hinder designing AR at ecotourism SME's Experiences in practice. Furthermore, the authors suggest a practical protocol for designing AR for ecotourism SMEs from the lens of service design (SD), User Experience (UX), and Augmented Reality (AR). Finally, the study also contributes to shade light on the marketing role and potential adoption of Augmented Reality (AR) in practice in SME's through a service design lens.

RESUMEN El río Hacha ubicado en Florencia-Caquetá, Colombia, abastece agua para el consumo humano y proporciona otros servicios ecosistémicos. Las actividades antrópicas han generado una presión en este recurso natural. Se realizó una valoración económica de la calidad de agua y los servicios recreativos en los balnearios del corredor vial del río. Se establecieron cuatro puntos en el tramo para medir indicadores fisicoquímicos del agua. Se realizó una encuesta en una muestra de 460 personas, cuyo análisis empleó los métodos de costo-viaje y valoración contingente. Se encontró que los indicadores de calidad de agua no exceden los límites permisibles para contacto primario. La recreación en los sitios genera beneficios económicos para la demanda local: la variación del excedente del consumidor ante un proyecto hipotético de mejora en la calidad del agua fue positiva. La disposición a pagar por hogar por una mejora en la calidad del agua asciende a $9.984,04 por año. Esto implica que existe un potencial de aprovechamiento sostenible en los servicios ecosistémicos asociados a la recreación en el recurso hídrico.


ABSTRACT The Hacha river located in Florencia-Caquetá, supplies water for human consumption and provides other ecosystem services. Anthropic activities have generated pressure on this natural resource. An economic valuation was made of water quality and recreational services in the river's road corridor resorts. Four points were established along the stretch to measure physicochemical water indicators. A survey was conducted on a sample of 460 people whose analysis employed the Cost-Travel and Contingent Valuation methods. It was found that the water quality indicators do not exceed the permissible limits for primary contact. Recreation at the sites generates economic benefits for local demand: the variation in consumer surplus for a hypothetical water quality improvement project was positive. The willingness to pay (WTP) per household for an improvement in water quality amounts to $2.12 dollars per year. This implies that there is a potential for sustainable use of the ecosystem services associated with water resource recreation.

ABSTRACT

Cenotes are spectacular karst formations in Yucatan, Mexico, often used for recreation. However, their impact on water quality has yet to be explored in detail. Therefore, during Easter, water samples were collected from four cenotes to identify variations in water quality associated with the presence of tourists. PCO of water quality, before (PH) and during Holy Week (HW) in 2019, explained 49.02% of the total variation. The indicators contributing to the first principal coordinate's variation were Sr, K, sulfate, and chloride (0.89). Whereas, alkalinity, temperature, conductivity, nitrate, and ORP contributed to the second PC. PERMANOVA indicated a significant interaction between "cenote" and "condition" factors, and post hoc paired comparisons indicated significant differences between PH and HW conditions. Significant correlations varied among the four cenotes as the result of hydrogeological differences. Whereas, numbers of visitors were correlated with at least one fecal-matter indicator, demonstrating anthropogenic influence on the cenotes' water quality.

RESUMEN El ecoturismo tiene crecimiento constante en el mundo por el favorecimiento económico, conservación y protección del ambiente. El objetivo del articulo es analizar los componentes socioculturales y ambientales que inciden en el ecoturismo comunitario. Se realizó una exploración documental a partir de artículos, libros y capítulos de libro de la base de datos de citaciones y resúmenes Scopus, mediante la búsqueda de categorias: ecoturismo, relaciones y elementos. El periodo de consulta fue entre los años 20I5 al 202I. Solo se consideraron los trabajos publicados en inglés, español y português, la muestra final fue de 98 documentos. Los resultados exponen las tendências actuales de las investigaciones en ecoturismo comunitario: sus impactos positivos y negativos, elementos socioculturales en capital cultural y condiciones y estilos de vida; ambientales como capacidad de carga y educación ambiental; las relaciones con las políticas, tendencias de los lugares de producción como China y Malasia, y la tecnologia implementada en servicios y productos. En conclusión, el ecoturismo es heterogêneo, busca equilibrio entre lo económico, ambiental y cultural. La participación comunitaria, gestión y planeación, educación ambiental, políticas de apoyo y TIC son esenciales.


ABSTRACT Ecotourism is growing steadily around the world for its economic benefits, conservation, and environmental protection. The article aims to analyze the socio-cultural and environmental components that have an impact on community-based ecotourism. A documentary exploration was carried out using articles, books, and book chapters from the Scopus database of citations and abstracts, by searching for categories: ecotourism, relationships, and elements of ecotourism. The consultation period was from 20I5 to 202I. Only papers published in English, Spanish and Portuguese were considered, the final sample was 98 papers. The results expose current trends in community-based ecotourism research: their positive and negative impacts, socio-cultural elements in cultural capital and living conditions and lifestyles; environmental elements such as carrying capacity and environmental education; relationships with policies, trends in production sites such as China and Malaysia, and technology implemented in services and products. In conclusion, ecotourism is heterogeneous, seeking a balance between economic, environmental, and cultural aspects. Community participation, management and planning, environmental education, policy support, and ICT are essential.


RESUMO O ecoturismo está a crescer constantemente em todo o mundo pelos seus benefícios económicos, conservação e protecção ambiental. O objectivo deste artigo é analisar as componentes socioculturais e ambientais que influenciam o ecoturismo baseado na comunidade. Foi realizada uma exploração documental utilizando artigos, livros e capítulos de livros da base de dados Scopus de citações e resumos, procurando categorias: ecoturismo, relações e elementos. O período de consulta foi de 20I5 a 202I. Apenas foram considerados artigos publicados em inglês, espanhol e português, a amostra final foi de 98 documentos. Os resultados expõem as actuais tendências de investigação em ecoturismo de base comunitária: os seus impactos positivos e negativos, elementos socioculturais no capital cultural e condições e estilos de vida; elementos ambientais como a capacidade de carga e educação ambiental; relações com políticas, tendências em locais de produção como a China e Malásia, e tecnologia implementada em serviços e produtos. Em conclusão, o ecoturismo é heterogéneo, procurando o equilíbrio entre económico, ambiental e cultural. A participação comunitária, gestão e planeamento, educação ambiental, apoio político e TIC são essenciais.

ABSTRACT

When captured, free-living crocodilians respond by hyperstimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which triggers a cascade of downstream events of physiological stress. We examined these responses in two unstressed, and stressed Amazonian caimans, Caiman crocodilus and Melanosuchus niger. Plasma corticosterone levels increased in both stressed caiman species. In M. niger, the levels of this hormone increased 5.2-fold compared with the basal range values, while in C. crocodilus this was only 1.7-fold. After stress, M. niger needed more than 6 h to return its corticosterone levels to basal range values, whereas in C. crocodilus just 0.5 h was enough. Downstream events were characterized by an increase in glucose levels, which is associated with corticosterone increments. Excessive muscle activity resulted in increased plasma lactate content in both species. Lactate levels were also related to plasma calcium concentration, possibly due to the buffering capacity for preventing lactic acidosis. Clearance of excessive lactate load was faster in M. niger (0.5 h) than in C. crocodilus (more than 6 h). Although both caiman species respond in the same way to capture, the amplitude and duration of activation of the HPA axis are different. M. niger may be potentially more sensitive to acute stress than C. crocodilus. On the other hand, C. crocodilus needs more time to recover from the lactic acid load. Our experiment provides a useful diagnostic tool for management and conservation programs, as well as evaluating the impacts of tourism and recreational capture on caimans in the Amazon.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The richest butterfly communities in the world are found in the Amazon rainforest. Despite of this, and the importance of species inventories for the knowledge of diversity patterns, there are few comprehensive lists of butterflies for localities in the Brazilian Amazon. Here, we present an updated list of the butterflies of Cristalino Lodge (Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso, Brazil), in southern Amazonia, based on specimens collected by researchers and photographic records taken by ecotourists, butterfly watchers, and tour guides. With 1010 species recorded, this is currently the largest list of butterflies published for a single locality in Brazil and the first to reach (and surpass) 1000 species, with more than one third of the records coming from citizen science. The region has about 29% of the butterfly species in Brazil and one of the greatest richnesses known in the country, inferior only to areas in the western Amazon. Its fauna is mainly composed of species widely distributed in lowland Amazonia, with the addition of some species typical of the Cerrado. It has a relatively low number of species of the tribe Ithomiini (Nymphalidae: Danainae), generally considered a good indicator of the total butterfly diversity in neotropical forests, which points to the need for caution when using a single taxonomic group as a surrogate of richness of entire communities. The present work highlights the importance of citizen science and ecotourism centers for inventories and data on species distribution in diverse tropical forests.


Resumo As comunidades de borboletas mais ricas do mundo são encontradas na Amazônia. Apesar disso, e da importância dos inventários de espécies para o conhecimento dos padrões de diversidade, existem poucas listas abrangentes de borboletas para localidades da Amazônia brasileira. Aqui, apresentamos uma lista atualizada das borboletas do Cristalino Lodge (Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso, Brasil), no sul da Amazônia, baseada em espécimes coletados por pesquisadores e em registros fotográficos feitos por ecoturistas, observadores de borboletas e guias turísticos. Com 1010 espécies registradas, essa é atualmente a maior lista de borboletas publicada para uma localidade no Brasil e a primeira a atingir 1000 espécies, sendo mais de um terço dos registros provenientes da ciência cidadã. A região apresenta cerca de 29% das espécies de borboletas do Brasil e uma das maiores riquezas conhecidas no país, inferior apenas a áreas no oeste da Amazônia. Sua fauna é composta principalmente por espécies amplamente distribuídas na planície amazônica, com adição de algumas típicas do Cerrado. Possui um número relativamente baixo de espécies da tribo Ithomiini (Nymphalidae: Danainae), que é geralmente considerada uma boa indicadora da riqueza total de borboletas em florestas neotropicais, o que aponta para a necessidade de cautela ao se usar um grupo taxonômico como previsor da riqueza de comunidades inteiras. O presente trabalho destaca a importância da ciência cidadã e dos centros de ecoturismo para inventários e dados sobre distribuição de espécies em florestas tropicais diversas.

Wild animals that feed on garbage waste are a problem in ecological parks as it can substantially alter their food ecology. Wild coatis that occupy human recreation areas in parks are often observed feeding on garbage, but the ecological consequences are scarcely known. Forty-four fecal samples from females and 12 from males of wild coatis living in two ecological parks (Parque Municipal das Mangabeiras (PMM) and Parque Nacional do Caparaó (PNC)) were analyzed. Multivariate statistics were applied to evaluate the interaction between four variables (fecal volume, composition, place and sex of coatis). A significant interaction between the parks and sexes with regard to volume and food category was not found. Ungrouped analysis allowed for the identification of a decreasing gradient in volume from PNC males, followed by PNC females, PMM males, and PMM females. We did not find differences between categories of food between males and females from PNC and PMM, except for invertebrates. Females from PNC consumed more invertebrates than males and females of PMM, but we did not find differences from PNC males. The coatis of both parks primarily consume invertebrates and vegetables, but garbage residues were found in their feces. Garbage fragments, such as paper, glass, metal, plastic and rope, cause a risk to the health, compromising the conservation efforts of wild coatis. Actions are needed to prevent the access of coatis to dumps in both parks.

ABSTRACT

Sustainability is a target that involves many socio-ecological questions, depends on opportunities and combines different initiatives. This can be especially difficult in regions with high biodiversity scores, mega cities, high level of human populations and an intense and long-standing land use. Here, we show how a mega trail, named Atlantic Forest Trail, within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest can join the protection of biodiversity and sustainable tourism through a 4270 km corridor connecting protected areas and crossing a variety of landscapes. Further, we show some initiatives of ongoing biodiversity monitoring, and an analysis of ecological restoration in private lands that can be applied in many regions to improve habitat connectivity for both biodiversity and human use.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study is to provide an estimate of the number of white sharks Carcharodon carcharias that seasonally interact with ecotourism boats in Guadalupe Island using Schnabel's mark-recapture method and 6316 records of white sharks during 2012-2014. The results of the estimation highlight an abundance of 78 white sharks 95% C.I. (62.1, 105.6) interacting with ecotourism. The regulations regarding the number of tourists, boats and the monitoring of white sharks should be assessed to improve management decisions regarding the conservation and sustainable use of this threatened species.

Bathing in natural waters is a highly demanded recreational activity in tropical countries because of climatic conditions and availability of bathing sites; but, do users know the water quality of these sites? We determined the physicochemical and microbiological water quality of a highly used bathing site in southern Ecuador. We assessed how bather attendance, rainfall events, and pool location alters the recreational water quality (RWQ). Most of the parameters measured in the stream pools did not accomplish the Ecuadorian and international regulations for recreational water quality. Microbiological water quality diminishes from upstream to downstream pools because of human activities and bathing intensity having potential effects on bather health and eco-touristic development. We found that an increase of bathers is strongly associated with a growing concentration of Escherichia coli. It is suggested better land-use practices and review thoroughly the Ecuadorian regulation to assure a healthy RWQ. Further efforts are needed to identify more risky bathing sites, determine pollution sources, and establish a long-term monitoring program to support the touristic development in countries looking for diversifying their economy.

Although potentially beneficial in terms of raising awareness and conservation funding, tourist visitation of wild primates can have negative impacts on visited groups. Tourism-generated noise is a relatively understudied facet of ecotourism research, and the effects of tourist-generated speech on free-ranging, wild primates has never been explored previously. This study investigates the behavioral responses of 10 groups of pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea) to human speech. Through the use of an experimental playback study using recorded human speech, we show that pygmy marmosets within the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve, Peru, are significantly less visible, and often move completely out of sight after louder playbacks. Although no consistent differences were found in other behaviors with playback duration and volume, playbacks of human speech tended to increase the amount of time individuals were alert and decrease feeding and resting behaviors. Our results demonstrate that human speech can alter the behavior of visited primates, and identifies a decrease in primate visibility within the increasing volume. As all trials in this study took place near a marmoset group's feeding tree, moving out of sight from the visible study area is a particularly energetically costly behavior, and also has a negative effect on visitor enjoyment as it limits the time that they are able to view the target species. This response was not observed (nor was any other consistent behavior change) in control trials where the marmosets were exposed to human presence but not to speech, suggesting that negative tourist impacts can be reduced by encouraging tourists to refrain from speaking in the presence of visited primate groups.

ABSTRACT

Landscapes are shaped over time by the changing imaginaries that result from new representations of nature and the value associated with it. This paper discusses the evolving discourses which have shaped the perception of the landscape in two socially and ecologically significant contexts in Chile. The first is the central-southern region of the country, a large portion of which is now devoted to commercial forestry plantations. The second is the Patagonia-Aysén region, where since the 1990s, colonization of a land defined by a tradition of livestock rearing has evolved into a process epitomized by the slogan "Aysén, Life Reserve." The representation that was made of central-southern Chile in the 50' and 60' as a deforested and degraded land was the justification for promoting a new form of land occupation: the monoculture forest, designed and executed by a specific law. Forty years on from the passing of this law, the plantations of central-southern Chile have undergone a process of naturalization. In this case, the exaltation of nature has been permanent (before and after the changes doing by this law). The only thing that changes is the definition of nature, which ended up including forest plantations. That is, discourses influence perceptions and these lead to new practices in the study area and beyond. In Patagonia-Aysén, by the other side, there has been a marked shift in the rhetoric surrounding land. This has been particularly noticeable in the case of government bodies and private ecotourism companies, which have constructed an imaginary in line with a new model of economic development for the area. In a break with tradition, both the public and private sectors are beginning to shift their investment away from agricultural and livestock exploitation and toward ecotourism and conservation projects. In both cases, we analyse the manner in which transformations in perceptions and representations of landscape bring about new forms of land use, and how new focuses of value and social interest, forged within wider environmental discourses, have brought with them unexpected social consequences, like depopulation, economic transformations, cultural changes, etc. Thus, the aim of this work is to expose and discuss the reality and scope of new green discourses and their influence on the perception of natural landscapes in the Chilean neoliberal context.

The biodiversity crisis we live in, marked by high extinction rates, requires well-planned conservation efforts. To overcome this issue, red lists of threatened species are recognized as the main objective approach for evaluating the conservation status of species and therefore guiding conservation priorities. This work focuses on the Myriapoda (Chilopoda and Diplopoda) species listed in the Brazilian red list of fauna to enable discussion of the practical implications of red lists for conservation. Almost all myriapods assessed are endemic to Brazil (99 %) and 73 % are known from subterranean habitats only. Despite of 33 % being recorded from protected areas (PAs), downgrading, degazettement or downsizing of PAs and intense and unregulated ecotourism represent great threats. The PAs network in Brazil tends to fail in conserving myriapod species. The number of data deficient species (42 %) states the need of investing in ecological and taxonomic studies about the group, in order to fill in important knowledge gaps in species assessments nationally and globally. In this work we show that there is a lack of communication between national and global agencies concerning red lists, which results in a significant loss for science and for conservation. Despite investing in national and state red lists, individual countries must take the final step of submitting its data to IUCN global database, as significant international funding is available for IUCN red listed species conservation. Being one of the most diverse countries in the world, and facing the biggest cuts ever on national science funding, losing these important funding opportunities is a huge loss for Brazilian biodiversity conservation and for science. This study raises awareness on subterranean habitats conservation, due to its high endemism and fragility. Since the first edition of the Brazilian Red List in 1968, centipedes are now included for the first time, and millipedes for the second time. The presence of these myriapods in the list brings attention to the group, which usually receives little or no attention in conservation programs and environmental impact assessments. Rather than a specific case for Myriapoda and for Brazil, the points discussed here can be related to arthropods and the tropics, as the most biodiverse countries are emerging economies facing similar challenges in PAs network management, species extinction risks and science funding.

Nature-based tourism is gaining extensive popularity, increasing the intensity and frequency of human-wildlife contacts. As a consequence, behavioral and physiological alterations were observed in most exposed animals. However, while the majority of these studies investigated the effects of punctual exposure to tourists, the consequences of constant exposition to humans in the wild remains overlooked. This is an important gap considering the exponential interest for recreational outdoor activities. To infer long-term effects of intensive tourism, we capitalized on Odontostilbe pequira, a short-lived sedentary Tetra fish who spends its life close to humans, on which it feeds on dead skin. Hence, those fish are constantly exposed to tourists throughout their lifecycle. Here we provide an integrated picture of the whole phenomenon by investigating, for the first time, the expression of genes involved in stress response and neurogenesis, as well as behavioral and hormonal responses of animals consistently exposed to tourists. Gene expression of the mineralocorticoid (and cortisol) receptor (mr) and the neurogenic differentiation factor (NeuroD) were significantly higher in fish sampled in the touristic zone compared to those sampled in the control zone. Additionally, after a simulated stress in artificial and controlled conditions, those fish previously exposed to visitors produced more cortisol and presented increased behavioral signs of stress compared to their non-exposed conspecifics. Overall, nature-based tourism appeared to shift selection pressures, favoring a sensitive phenotype that does not thrive under natural conditions. The ecological implications of this change in coping style remain, nevertheless, an open question.

ABSTRACT: The study aimed to investigate Leishmania infection in a population of dogs (92 animals) in a fishing area of Bonito Municipality, and evaluate comparatively the serological methods used, immunoenzymatic assay (ELISA), indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT), and rapid Dual Path-Platform test (DPP®). Blood and aspirate of bone marrow samples were used and parasitological investigation was also performed, such as parasite isolation in Neal, Novy, Nicolle (NNN) medium culture, Woo technique, Giemsa stained smears and specific identification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). IFAT revealed 56/92 seropositive, the ELISA 8/92 and the DPP®41/92. Regarding the agreement between the serological tests by the Kappa index, there was a slight agreement between ELISA/IFAT and ELISA/DPP®, and fair agreement in IFAT/DPP®. The NNN culture was positive in three out of 21 dogs, and identified by PCR as Leishmania infantum chagasi. No samples were positive by the Woo technique. Our results showed low agreements between the serological tests recommended by the Brazilian Ministry of Heath, and it is necessary to associate other diagnostic techniques, such as parasitological tests and PCR, to increase the sensitivity for canine visceral leishmaniosis diagnosis, mainly regarding asymptomatic dogs in endemic areas.


RESUMO: O estudo teve como objetivo verificar a infecção por Leishmania em uma população de cães (n=92 animais) de uma área de turismo de pesca no município de Bonito e avaliar comparativamente os métodos sorológicos utilizados, ensaio imunoenzimático (ELISA), reação de imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI) e teste rápido de plataforma dupla (DPP®). Testes parasitológicos também foram realizados, como o isolamento do parasita em meio de cultura Neal, Novy, Nicolle, técnica de Woo, esfregaços em lâminas coradas com Giemsa e identificação específica pela reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR). A RIFI revelou sorologia positiva de 56/92, ELISA 8/92 e DPP®41/92. Quanto à concordância entre os testes sorológicos pelo índice Kappa, houve um ligeiro acordo entre ELISA/RIFI e ELISA/DPP®, e uma concordância razoável entre RIFI/DPP®. A cultura NNN foi positiva em três cães, e identificada por PCR como Leishmania infantum chagasi. Nenhuma amostra foi positiva pela técnica de Woo. Nossos resultados mostraram baixas concordâncias entre os testes sorológicos recomendados pelo Ministério da Saúde, sendo necessário associar a outras técnicas de diagnóstico, como testes parasitológicos e PCR, para aumentar a sensibilidade ao diagnóstico de leishmaniose visceral canina, principalmente, com relação aos cães assintomáticos em áreas endêmicas.

ABSTRACT

The literature on community-based environmental management is very extensive and the discussion of the pros and cons is continuing. Presented here is an example of a successful interaction between university-based entomologists and a local rural community, detailing the change in the attitude of the town of Millbank, Jamaica, from a Giant Swallowtail Butterfly collecting site to a model for community protection of a species and its environment. A review of some of the research work on community-based conservation efforts is included. These linkages take a considerable time to establish and the efforts spent by scientific personnel, governmental representatives and eco-tourists are itemized to emphasize how specific conservation activities have inspired confidence in the local community, thus engendering trust and mutual respect between the two groups. Reviews of the developed legislative support from both international and state entities also must be in place, and these are included in chronological detail as much as possible. Finally, a review of the long-term funding of educational and other local programs providing a level of stability to the conservation effort, until the local community can take over the protection of the species and/or habitat, is provided. Of utmost importance is a comprehensive educational campaign to not only sensitize the community, but the larger society, so that there can be buy-in from all stakeholders.

ABSTRACT

Recording the nycthemeral rhythm of sand flies allows the evaluation of the daily activity in different ecotypes, the period of greatest activity, and their degree of anthropophily. We investigated the fauna and the rhythm of sand fly activity in an ecotourism region in Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) state, Brazil. Sand flies were captured monthly, using a Shannon trap for 24 h periods between July 2012 and June 2014. We collected 1,815 sand flies, in which Lutzomyia whitmani (=Nyssomyia whitmani, sensu Galati) and Lutzomyia longipalpis were the most abundant species during the dry season, with activity from 5 p.m.-7 a.m. and 6 p.m.-5 a.m., respectively. Both species require particular attention as vectors of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum in several regions of Brazil, including MS. However, Lutzomyia dispar was more anthropophilic, and was most active between January and March, from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. Lutzomyia misionensis (=Pintomyia misionensis, sensu Galati) was present throughout both years, active from 4 p.m. to 5 a.m. Other species were active from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. Due to intense tourism in the months that coincide with a high number of vectors for leishmaniases in Piraputanga, it is essential to determine vector-monitoring strategies in the area by investigating sand fly rhythm while not neglecting other periods of the year when the insects are present.
