ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analyze and compare the current Spanish and Chilean regulations regarding occupational risk prevention, regarding the existence of specific indications that protect the occupational health and safety of people over 55 years of age. METHOD: Qualitative study in which a documentary content analysis was carried out using ATLAS/ti. The sample was 88 regulatory documents on occupational risk prevention for Spain and Chile. The guidance of the European Agency for Safety at Work (EU-OSHA) regarding age-critical risks was followed. RESULTS: In global terms, 21.9% of the total Spanish documents analyzed show the explicit presence of considerations on aging, while for Chile this occurs in 9%. Both countries mention indications regarding ergonomic risks and noise. Shift work and psychosocial risks are considered only in Spain, while extreme temperatures, vibrations and geographical altitude appear exclusively in Chilean regulations. Neither country refers to issues inherent to working women (care responsibilities, menopause). CONCLUSIONS: The Spanish regulations present a greater presence of indications on aging compared to the Chilean one. However, development in this area is insufficient in both countries. Chile and Spain have guides of recommendations, which are not mandatory, and their application is voluntary. This suggests that the prevention of occupational risks has a great pending challenge with people over 55 years of age.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To determine the presence of negative stereotypes of old age in new medical intern residents (MIR) of the Community of Madrid. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey study of first year MIRs was carried out anonymously during the process of registration at the Madrid College of Physicians between 25/03 and 26/05 of 2023. The Questionnaire of Negative Stereotypes towards Old Age (CENVE) and the Let's Fight All Together Against Ageism (LTJCE) survey were used. RESULTS: A total of 829 new MIRs were included, with a mean age of 26.0 (standard deviation [SD]=3.5) years. According to the LTJCE survey, 29.1% consider that in general older people are similar to each other; 47.5%, that deterioration of health in old age is inevitable, 26.8% that old age begins at 60 years; 30.5%, that age per se is a determinant when making clinical decisions and 31.0%, that aging is an obstacle that we must overcome in order to lead a healthy life. The mean total score of the CENVE scale (range 15-60) was 28.3 (SD=7.0) and the means of the different factors (range 5-20) were 8.6 (SD=2.8) for health; 9.8 (SD=2.6) for motivational-social; 10.0 (SD=2.7) for character-personality. CONCLUSIONS: Most new MIRs do not present old age-related stereotypes.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

Ageism levels were determined and associations with other variables were analyzed. A logistic regression model explored ageism’ associated factors. Results Two hundred and sixty-three students participated. Most had low or very low levels of ageism (83.3%). The most ageist students showed higher hostile sexism (OR=1.07; p<.01) and higher aging anxiety (OR=1.10; p<.05) than students with high scores in ageism. Graduate students showed protector OR for ageism when compared to postgraduate students (OR=.31; p<.05). Conclusions Higher hostile sexism and aging anxiety are associated with higher ageism in students from the University of Granada. Universities must include in their study plans knowledge about this problem and develop programs aimed at avoiding discrimination in the elderly. (AU)

ABSTRACT

(AU)

ABSTRACT

Population aging constitutes one of the achievements and one of the most important challenges in the development of societies. The main cause of aging is the decrease in the fertility of women and to a lesser extent external emigration, especially of young people. In Cuba, more people die than are born, mainly due to low replacement levels in fertility, a situation aggravated in the years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the negative consequences of population aging, four main ones are identified: health, economic, sociocultural and legal; among the positive ones, there are some reports of cohorts of people who reach advanced ages in better physical and mental condition. The changes that have occurred in the family institution in many societies and the age discrimination of the elderly have serious consequences for the health, well-being and human rights of the elderly. It is considered that there is a lot of information about the "diagnosis" and "prognosis" of population aging, but there is less about effective actions for its "treatment", a complex and difficult aspect to face. Some proposals are presented to mitigate these inevitable demographic changes. The purpose of this communication is to comment on certain aspects of the aging of the Cuban population.

ABSTRACT

The phenomenon of ageism in healthcare is a significant threat to elderly people’s well-being. Thereis a literature gap regarding the topic of ageism among dental professionals in Greece. This study aimsto contribute to filling this gap. A cross-sectional study was conducted using recently validated in Greece15-item ageism 6-point Likert-scale. The scale has been previously validated in the environment of seniordental students. Purposive sampling was used to select participants. A total of 365 dentists responded tothe questionnaire. As to the internal consistency of the scale, Cronbach’s alpha found to be very low (α =0.590) to support the reliability of a total of 15 Likert-type questions (items) of the scale. However, the fac-tor analysis resulted in three factors that achieved high reliability towards validity. The demographic com-parison with these factors and single items revealed statistically significant gender differences in ageism(with males being more ageist than females), and differences related to other socio-demographic factors, which however, were related to factors or items individually. The study revealed that the Greek version ofthe ageism scale for dental students had not further validity and reliability among dentists. However, someitems were distributed into three factors that presented significant validity and reliability. This is of greatimportance for the ongoing research on the topic “ageism in dental healthcare”.(AU)

ABSTRACT

(AU)

The Decade of Healthy Ageing reopens opportunities to invest in age-friendly environments and integrated health and social care systems. The aim of this paper is to analyse these windows of opportunity for Nursing. Healthy ageing implies that older people contribute to society for longer, with opportunities to have good health, and to maintain and develop capabilities, and that it is determined by functional ability, intrinsic capacity and the physical and social environment. This requires integrated, transformative and people-centred health and social systems, rather than systems based on disease. Nursing can contribute by changing the way we think, feel and act about age and ageing, offering integrated and person-centred care, adapting the model of care, with a focus on health promotion and disease prevention, and care for older people by enhancing their capabilities and autonomy, especially in primary care. Fighting against ageism, training nurses in advanced practice competency, improving accessibility, training older people and their families in digital matters, researching on these factors, are opportunities that the Decade of Healthy Ageing Report reopens for Nursing. ABSTRACT

Ageism is a form of abuse which has negative influence on elderly people. Although COVID-19 affects people of all ages, it has increased ageism effects, reducing the access of the elderly to different resources, including health system. Ageism is associated to cost overruns, poorer health and early mortality. From «GdT atención al mayor de semFYC¼ we make a series of proposals to decrease it based on community activities that favour intergenerational relationships and ageing education allowing a correct integration of the elderly on society.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the CRENCO project which was carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic including intergenerational activities shared by students from primary and secondary education and users of two centers for older adults and a day hospital in Catalonia. The effectiveness was assessed in terms of well-being in older adults and on negative stereotypes about the elderly in primary and secondary students. METHODS: Three interventions were carried out in which 32 older persons (9 users of centers for older adults and 23 of a day hospital), 99 primary students and 56 secondary students participated. Participants answered a questionnaire before and after the interventions. Through multilevel linear models for repeated measures, changes in feelings of loneliness, social support, anxiety and depressive symptoms, self-reported health and health-related quality of life were evaluated in older people. In primary and secondary students, changes in age stereotypes were evaluated. RESULTS: Health-related quality of life and self-reported health improved statistically after the interventions in older persons. Users of the day hospital also reported an improvement in social support. Primary school students improved their age stereotypes; no statistically significant changes were detected in secondary students. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study contribute to underlining the importance of intergenerational programs such as the one proposed by CRENCO, capable of improving well-being and providing a more realistic vision of the older adults. Our results suggest that these programs should be implemented during childhood in order to prevent the proliferation of ageist stereotypes in later life stages.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This is a theoretical study that aims to articulate contributions on ageism with the dialogic tetragrammaton of interactions, proposed by Morin, in the context of work in the Family Health Strategy and Primary Health Care. To accomplish this, a symbolic projection of knowledge about ageism was carried out, organized in four acts: order, dispersion, interaction, and reconnection. We concluded that this theoretical exercise can be transmuted to the daily work in health care, and that understanding the existence of the dialogic tetragrammaton, which acts in life simultaneously in antagonistic, concurrent and complementary ways, can stimulate critical, creative and complex thinking in favor of knowledge and practices that take the complexity of ageism into account.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract Ageism is the prejudice or discrimination of older adults, whether through stigmatization or discriminatory practices by society and its institutions. The current covid-19 pandemic context has shown Western society's ageist stance and, consequently, of its protocols on the distribution of health resources, leading to severe negative repercussions to the care of this population. This theoretical essay discusses the manifestations and consequences of ageism in the context of health resource distribution policies during the pandemic, considering the bioethical implications involved in this type of discrimination when considering the principles of justice and human dignity.

ABSTRACT

Ageism is defined as stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination towards people due to their age. The present review analyzed the age-related attitudes, and the responses to them, produced during the COVID-19 pandemic. We searched for publications related to ageism during the COVID-19 pandemic in Pubmed, Medline, and Embase. Fourteen manuscripts were included. The works highlighted the civic and social sense of older adults, their capacity for help community, despite the risk of infection. This attitude contrasted with her vulnerability to illness and ageism. Specific interventions are necessary to support older adults during the pandemic, guaranteeing financial support, protection in the residential environment, access to information, and solving barriers to accessing health services. Likewise, chronological age should not be an independent criterion for clinical decision making.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic affects various age groups differently, with most deaths concentrated among the older population and those with previous health conditions. This has led to a greater presence of older people in the agenda setting of all the media. This article aims to analyse these discourses and representations related to older people as presented in the headlines of publications disseminated in 2national newspapers (ABC and El País) during the most critical phase of the pandemic in Spain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An analysis was made of 501 headlines related to older people and the COVID-19 pandemic (380 from ABC, and 121 from El País) from the perspective of the Critical Discourse Studies (Van Dijk, 2003), as well as carrying out a content analysis. RESULTS: 71.4% of the headlines represented the Older adults were represented unfavourably in 71.4% of the headlines, with them being presented as a homogeneous group and associating them with deaths, deficiencies in residential care, or extreme vulnerability. The presence of certain potentially derogatory or improper terms (elderly, grandparents) was consistent with this negative representation. CONCLUSIONS: In light of these results, it is discussed to what extent the COVID-19 pandemic may reinforce an ageist narrative of the older people, based on frailty, decline, and dependency, which may justify discriminatory practices directed at this sector of the population.

ABSTRACT

This research aims to show that the implementation of intergenerational salience at a social level can affect the work context, particularly in hospitals. Participants were 50 voluntary nurses (25 juniors, 25 seniors) working in French hospitals. RepMut Methodology, based on the theories of social categorization and self-categorization, highlights the mutual representations of group relations and allows measurement of the biases of perception and evaluation. The results support the idea that junior/senior self-categorization plays an important role in structuring work relations. Both groups express in-group homogeneity, but also contrast and values consistent with their social group membership. We discuss the benefit of differentiating the levels of analysis in order to acquire an understanding of diversity and its associated effects.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Negative stereotypes towards ageing and the old age may negatively influence relationships and working with older people. The CENVE (Negative Stereotypes Towards Ageing) questionnaire is a validated Spanish tool designed to evaluate these stereotypes, but there are no evidence about its factorial structure with young people and adults. This factorial structure of CENVE is analysed in non-elderly subjects, and its relationship with various sociodemographic and experience-related indicators is also examined. METHOD: A total of 350 young people and adults completed the CENVE. Information on demographics, specialised academic training in aging, and level of contact with elderly people were also provided. An analysis was performed on the factorial structure of the questionnaire and its relationship with socio-demographic and experiential indicators. RESULTS: The analyses performed did not confirm the original structure in 3 sub-scales, suggesting an alternative one-dimensional structure. It also suggested the existence of different ageist stereotypes associated with the socio-demographic profile of non-elderly subjects (particularly related to educational level). Less conclusive results were obtained regarding former experience and level of information on aging. CONCLUSIONS: CENVE is a useful tool for evaluating ageism, but in the present article a one-dimensional correction is suggested for the non-elderly population.
