ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Access to reliable and accurate digital health web-based resources is crucial. However, the lack of dedicated search engines for non-English languages, such as French, is a significant obstacle in this field. Thus, we developed and implemented a multilingual, multiterminology semantic search engine called Catalog and Index of Digital Health Teaching Resources (CIDHR). CIDHR is freely accessible to everyone, with a focus on French-speaking resources. CIDHR has been initiated to provide validated, high-quality content tailored to the specific needs of each user profile, be it students or professionals. OBJECTIVE: This study's primary aim in developing and implementing the CIDHR is to improve knowledge sharing and spreading in digital health and health informatics and expand the health-related educational community, primarily French speaking but also in other languages. We intend to support the continuous development of initial (ie, bachelor level), advanced (ie, master and doctoral levels), and continuing training (ie, professionals and postgraduate levels) in digital health for health and social work fields. The main objective is to describe the development and implementation of CIDHR. The hypothesis guiding this research is that controlled vocabularies dedicated to medical informatics and digital health, such as the Medical Informatics Multilingual Ontology (MIMO) and the concepts structuring the French National Referential on Digital Health (FNRDH), to index digital health teaching and learning resources, are effectively increasing the availability and accessibility of these resources to medical students and other health care professionals. METHODS: First, resource identification is processed by medical librarians from websites and scientific sources preselected and validated by domain experts and surveyed every week. Then, based on MIMO and FNRDH, the educational resources are indexed for each related knowledge domain. The same resources are also tagged with relevant academic and professional experience levels. Afterward, the indexed resources are shared with the digital health teaching and learning community. The last step consists of assessing CIDHR by obtaining informal feedback from users. RESULTS: Resource identification and evaluation processes were executed by a dedicated team of medical librarians, aiming to collect and curate an extensive collection of digital health teaching and learning resources. The resources that successfully passed the evaluation process were promptly included in CIDHR. These resources were diligently indexed (with MIMO and FNRDH) and tagged for the study field and degree level. By October 2023, a total of 371 indexed resources were available on a dedicated portal. CONCLUSIONS: CIDHR is a multilingual digital health education semantic search engine and platform that aims to increase the accessibility of educational resources to the broader health care-related community. It focuses on making resources "findable," "accessible," "interoperable," and "reusable" by using a one-stop shop portal approach. CIDHR has and will have an essential role in increasing digital health literacy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Assessment of pain in people with intellectual disability (PWID) is a difficult clinical task. Poor knowledge and confidence in assessing pain in PWID result in underestimation and undertreatment. Available resources for healthcare personnel and caregivers on pain assessment in PWID are still very limited. The aim of the study was to measure the level of knowledge and confidence in assessing pain in PWID of health and education personnel at Istituto Serafico, before and after training. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The Istituto Serafico is a neuro-rehabilitation center caring for people with complex disabilities. Nurses, rehabilitation therapists, social health workers (SHW) and educators were invited to participate in a 4-hours theoretical and practical training. Participants were assessed through a knowledge and confidence questionnaire on pain assessment in PWID, administered before and after the training. RESULTS: 123 participants attended both the theoretical and practical sessions. Median age was 43 years (range 23-67); 89 were females and 34 males. They were 10 (8%) nurses, 9 (7%) rehabilitation therapists, 77 (63%) SHW, 27 (22%) educators. Only 7 (6%) participants (5 nurses and 2 SHW) declared to have previously received formation on pain. Participants who felt "quite confident" in assessing pain increased from 28% to 73% after the training. The median score to the 24 knowledge questions raised from 15/24 correct answers (range 6-22, 62.5%) in the pre-test to 21/24 (range 11-24, 87.5%) in the post-tests (p=0.001) Conclusions: The study highlights the great need of education programs for health and educational personnel working with PWID on pain assessment and the potential to improve knowledge and confidence through theoretical and practical training. A greater awareness of pain causes, clinical manifestations and consequences of untreated pain, could improve patient care, quality of life and rehabilitation goals.

ABSTRACT

ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) has entered higher education and there is a need to determine how to use it effectively. This descriptive study compared the ability of GPT-3.5 and teachers to answer questions from dental students and construct detailed intended learning outcomes. When analyzed according to a Likert scale, we found that GPT-3.5 answered the questions from dental students in a similar or even more elaborate way compared to the answers that had previously been provided by a teacher. GPT-3.5 was also asked to construct detailed intended learning outcomes for a course in microbial pathogenesis, and when these were analyzed according to a Likert scale they were, to a large degree, found irrelevant. Since students are using GPT-3.5, it is important that instructors learn how to make the best use of it both to be able to advise students and to benefit from its potential.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of the availability of a health professional on the beliefs, attitudes, and work feelings of teaching staff when facing the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a two-phase study: In the first one, the Delphi technique was used to update an instrument used by the authors in a previous investigation in 2020. The second phase was a cross-sectional, descriptive, and comparative study, carried out through an electronic questionnaire distributed among the teaching staff of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (Spain), during the first two months of the 2021/22 academic year, in the midst of the fifth wave of COVID-19. Data were analyzed using Pearson's chi-squared test and the linear trend test. The reasons for advantages were analyzed and the dimensions of the questionnaire were compared between the groups studied (with or without a healthcare professional in the center). Out of 640 teachers in the study, 14.7% (n = 94) stated that they had a reference professional with health training in their educational center (a school nurse) for the management of possible cases of COVID-19. Significant differences were found in five of the nine dimensions studied between the groups of teachers analyzed. Teachers who had a health professional, specifically a nurse, during the pandemic indicated that they felt safer in their educational center, as they perceived that they had more personal protective equipment (OR = 2.03, [95% CI: 1.23-3.35]; p = 0.006). They were also more committed (OR = 1.89, [95% CI: 1.04-3.46]; p = 0.038) with their educational work and assumed more obligations (OR = 1.87, [95% CI: 1.01-3.44]; p = 0.045) and risks (OR = 2.82, [95% CI: 1.13-7.07]; p = 0.027). In addition, they presented fewer feelings of burnout (OR = 0.63, [95% CI: 0.41-0.98]; p = 0.041). These results indicate that having nurses in educational centers improves teachers' ability to cope with a pandemic situation.

ABSTRACT

Purpose Body image encompasses body-related self-perceptions and personal attitudes. Dissatisfaction with body image during the early stages of adolescence is negatively related to self-esteem and other health problems. A few publications focused on positive body image and directly related to the experiences and interactions of adolescents themselves. To explore positive body image in adolescents and describe the familial and educational factors that contribute to its development. Methods A qualitative study was conducted. Purposive sampling was used, and 9 adolescents, 6 families, and 8 teachers participated in semi-structured interviews, which were then theme analyzed. Results Self-care, body acceptance, confronting messages that attack body image, and the influence of social media have been identified as emerging themes in adolescents' positive body image experiences. Therefore, the pubertal period, family values, fostering, and educational actions as well as media literacy were identified as factors promoting self-esteem and positive body image in the family and educational environment. Conclusions Their parents also expressed aspects such as those that contribute to the development of healthy self-esteem, confidence, and positive body image. Alternatively, the teachers indicated educational activities to work on self-image and self-esteem when faced with situations of concern in the classroom.

ABSTRACT

Objective : To know the job satisfaction in the Dental Surgeon academics from the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Zaragoza, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, during 2019. Methods : Observational, prolective, cross-sectional, descriptive study. The study population consisted of 123 academics, to whom a 20-item questionnaire was applied with responses on the Likert scale (Cronbach's α 0.845). Results : Of the total number of respondents, 45% (55) were male, 55% (68) were female, with a mean age of 36.5 (± 9.6) years. 48% (59) of the academics are satisfied with the teaching work they do, in contrast, 25% (31) are very dissatisfied. Among the factors that influence dissatisfaction, the following was found: The workload, especially those who have a mixed shift, the little support that the institution gives to study a postgraduate course, the stress that comes with the responsibility of supervising students in the area clinic in patient care. Dissatisfaction occurs in a higher proportion in academics aged ≥ 50 years. Conclusions : The referred factors that influence dissatisfaction are: low salary, inadequate facilities to teach classes, lack of support for training by the institution, non-recognition of the work done. It is striking that, in the Dental Surgeon degree where teamwork is of the utmost importance, this does not occur or occurs very rarely.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recording the attendance of students is an important affair for schools, colleges, and universities. It is required to be compliant with the regulations set by the board or universities, as it helps to calculate cumulative attendance to determine the eligibility of a student for university examinations. Furthermore, it is crucial for the administration to have a record of who is on campus in case of an emergency. However, literature on various attendance methods that are in practice around the world is scarce. Hence, this review aimed to conduct a systematic literature review to find the current methods of recording attendance in a classroom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant literature was searched in PubMed using the keywords "attendance," "method," and "classroom," and cross-references were also checked. Gray literature was also searched. The studies were screened for their content to determine their relevance to this review. A total of eight articles were included in the final systematic review. RESULTS: The literature suggests that the methods of recording attendance in a classroom can be broadly divided into three categories: teacher-led, student-led, and automated methods. In teacher-led methods, the teacher takes the responsibility of recording the attendance by actively implementing the method, and students respond (e.g., roll call by a teacher). In the student-led methods, the students take the responsibility to record attendance, while the teacher may act as a facilitator (e.g., signing in on a paper circulated among students). The newly introduced automated method requires little intervention from the teacher or students (e.g., radio-frequency identification (RFID)-based attendance). CONCLUSION: This review discusses the attendance recording methods in a classroom and explores the characteristics of these methods, along with their major advantages and disadvantages. Prospective teachers can gain insight into these methods and adopt suitable ones appropriate for their classrooms after assessing their suitability using the evaluation method suggested in this review.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background Education professionals have shared changes in the work process due to the incorporation of technological innovations and the scenario of the precariousness of work relationships. Objective To describe injuries and incapacity for work among Brazilian teaching professionals. Method The study analyzed all illness/diseases of compulsory notification and work-related disability in the group of teaching professionals (CBO 23 and CBO 33) from 2007 to 2016, based on notifications from the Notifiable Diseases Information System - SINAN. Results The descriptive analysis highlighted a higher frequency of serious accidents, accidents with biological material, Repetitive Strain Injury/Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (RSI/WMSD), and exogenous intoxication and mental disorder. Temporal evolution of morbidity indicators was recorded for each condition of interest and stratification by disability. Disabilities in this category are related to serious accidents, RSI/WMSD, and mental disorders, predominantly in females, in addition to conditioning factors in the work context. Conclusion We identified differences between empirical research and disease surveillance in the analyzed category. Worker health surveillance should be reinforced for a proper dimensioning of diseases to reflect the health/disease process, thus facilitating an early diagnosis and supporting prevention actions for workers.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: The AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19 is a current issue as it is one of the most widely available vaccines in the world to deal with this disease. However, it presents clinical manifestations, likewise other vaccine, that range from mild to severe, presenting differently in each inoculated person and that, on certain occasions, generate mistrust due to its short-term adverse effects. Objective: To determine the clinical manifestations after inoculation with the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19. Methods: A descriptive study with a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach was carried out in the Emilio Lorenzo Stehle School in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas-Ecuador, with a population of 23 teachers who participated with their informed consent. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire which consisted of seven questions formulated according to the research variables. Results: The clinical manifestations after vaccination with AstraZeneca with the highest incidence were muscle pain, headache and fever. It is worth mentioning that there are people who did not have any symptom. In addition, a point of concern in a minimum percentage is the severity of the clinical manifestations that were mostly treated with paracetamol. Conclusions: The manifestations were of mild intensity, mainly in female teachers, with symptoms lasting up to three days, especially using paracetamol to alleviate discomfort.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

From a social-critical community perspective, in this study, we make visible the practices of resistance and/or reproduction to the Chilean neoliberal educational system that are deployed in a collaborative workspace for teachers in science. We resorted tocritical ethnography, de-ployed in the techniques of: participant observation, semi-structured interview and discussion group. Through a qualitative analysis of content, two axes are identified to address the prac-tices deployed in the collaborative workspace: organizational practices and pedagogical prac-tices. Teachers identify that the educational system that contextualizes their work prevents collaborative practices from being expressed and predominant in the space, given that their evaluative demands oppress them, distancing them from the activities that are developed in the collaborative space. We conclude that the practices of reproduction and resistance coexist in the group’s evolution, establishing themselves as an apparent dichotomy that forces them to “reproduce in order to resist”. ABSTRACT

This review aims to define the 4 types of the metaverse and to explain the potential and limitations of its educational applications. The metaverse roadmap categorizes the metaverse into 4 types: augmented reality, lifelogging, mirror world, and virtual reality. An example of the application of augmented reality in medical education would be an augmented reality T-shirt that allows students to examine the inside of the human body as an anatomy lab. Furthermore, a research team in a hospital in Seoul developed a spinal surgery platform that applied augmented reality technology. The potential of the metaverse as a new educational environment is suggested to be as follows: a space for new social communication; a higher degree of freedom to create and share; and the provision of new experiences and high immersion through virtualization. Some of its limitations may be weaker social connections and the possibility of privacy impingement; the commission of various crimes due to the virtual space and anonymity of the metaverse; and maladaptation to the real world for students whose identity has not been established. The metaverse is predicted to change our daily life and economy beyond the realm of games and entertainment. The metaverse has infinite potential as a new social communication space. The following future tasks are suggested for the educational use of the metaverse: first, teachers should carefully analyze how students understand the metaverse; second, teachers should design classes for students to solve problems or perform projects cooperatively and creatively; third, educational metaverse platforms should be developed that prevent misuse of student data.

ABSTRACT

Universities have a number of human resources policies and procedures and, despite being described and standardized, they often rely on academics with a low level of knowledge of people management. Objective: To identify the needed skills and actions that academics with management responsibilities in a public university should have, with respect to labor disengagement processes. Methodology: We used a qualitative approach, grounded theory, in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 academic faculty in managerial positions. Intentional sampling was used for the selection of participants. The interviews were conducted through the Meet platform. Participation was voluntary and informed consent was obtained. Results: the respondents indicated they lack sufficient information regarding the processes to execute the procedures, in addition to a need for greater systematization of the process by the institution. Contract termination was not specified as one of their responsibilities. Conclusions: there is a lack of a systematic on boarding process, feedback or termination processes when academic services are no longer needed, which causes emotional problems in managers(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the degree to which newly appointed medical faculty members at the Catholic University of Korea are aware of Harden and Crosby's 12 educational roles and to identify their preferred educational roles. A 12-item survey questionnaire was distributed to 110 participants, and 100 responses were included in the analysis. The respondents gave the highest score to "clinical or practical teacher" and the lowest score to "curriculum planner" for their current personal competencies. For their preferred personal future competencies, they assigned the highest score to "on the job role model" and the lowest score to "student assessor." They gave almost equally high values to all 12 roles. However, individual faculty members had different preferences for educational roles. Accordingly, medical schools need to plan and implement customized faculty development programs, and efforts to provide appropriate educational roles according to individual faculty members' preferences are needed.

ABSTRACT

The first interprofessional course that included students in the 8 undergraduate health programs at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile was implemented in 2015. For the 700 students, 35 teachers were trained as facilitators. The use of several strategies to train facilitators in interprofessional health education, such as working in small groups, role-playing, case analysis, personal development workshops with experts' participation, teamwork skills, feedback, videos, and reading articles, proved to be helpful. Facilitators highlighted the use of syllabi as a fundamental tool for teaching and coordination. This guide describes the experience of interprofessional health education teacher training from 2015 to 2019, highlighting the following lessons learned: the importance of support from university authorities, raising faculty awareness about interprofessional health education and collaborative practice, creating a teachers' coordination team including representatives from all health programs, and ongoing monitoring and feedback from participants.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Education scholarship requires peer reviewers. For novice scholars, reviewing is an important developmental activity that cultivates deeper participation in the scholarship community. Yet getting started with reviewing is challenging for those not involved with the educational scholarship community. Beyond scientific expertise, reviewers must have a mentoring mindset, skills in providing constructive feedback, and knowledge of common ethical challenges associated with producing and evaluating scholarship. Methods: Our workshop introduced novice health professions educators to peer reviewing. It included four stimulus presentations about the peer reviewer's mindset and skills, followed by reinforcement activities. The workshop could be adapted to variously sized groups. An 8:1 ratio of participants to facilitators was ideal for activities. Topics covered included considerations before accepting an invitation, the review process, the good citizen approach to reviewing, and reviewer ethics. The session concluded with suggestions for continued development of peer reviewer competencies. The workshop was evaluated using a custom survey. Results: Throughout 2019 and early 2020, 58 health professions educators and trainees participated in the workshop across varied venues. Evaluations were obtained from 33 participants (57%). Nearly all rated the workshop as high quality and valuable to peer reviewer preparation. Most (26 of 33; 75%) gained confidence about their qualifications to serve as reviewers. Eighty percent (28 of 33) believed they could recognize ethical dilemmas. Discussion: This workshop provided a springboard for peer reviewing health professions education scholarship. Participants generally praised the experience for introducing them to the world of peer review and preparing them for it.
