ABSTRACT

The analysis of spontaneous tail coiling (STC) in zebrafish embryos is a functional parameter that allows the study of motor development. It has recently gained relevance as a biomarker to assess the neurotoxicity of environmental substances. Its practicability in the laboratory makes it an excellent pedagogical tool for promoting students' inquiry skills. However, the time and cost of materials and facilities limit their usage in undergraduate laboratories. This study presents the design of a computer-based educational module called ZebraSTMe, which is based on a tail coiling assay and aims to improve science process skills in undergraduate students by connecting them to relevant and novel content. We evaluate students' perception of learning, the quality of materials used, and the knowledge gained. Our results show that students perceived an improvement in their statistical analysis, representation, and discussion of experimental data. Additionally, the students evaluated the quality and ease of use of the materials and provided feedback for revision. A thematic analysis of the opinions revealed that the module activities promoted students' reflection on their professional strengths and weaknesses.NEW & NOTEWORTHY ZebraSTMe is a novel computer-based educational module that utilizes spontaneous tail coiling analysis in zebrafish embryos to enhance undergraduate students' scientific inquiry skills. By addressing the challenges of time, cost, and laboratory resources, the module improves students' science process skills and promotes reflection on their professional strengths and weaknesses. The innovative ZebraSTMe exemplifies the potential of integrating cutting-edge research topics into undergraduate education, leading to more engaging and effective learning experiences in physiology and other scientific disciplines.

ABSTRACT

Bioinformatics education can be defined as the teaching and learning of how to use software tools, along with mathematical and statistical analysis, to solve biological problems. Although many resources are available, most students still struggle to understand even the simplest sequence alignment algorithms. Applying visualizations to these topics benefits both lecturers and students. Unfortunately, educational software for visualizing step-bystep processes in the user experience of sequence alignment algorithms is rare. In this article, an educational visualization tool for biological sequence alignment is presented, and the source code is released in order to encourage the collaborative power of open-source software, with the expectation of further contributions from the community in the future. Two different modules are integrated to enable a student to investigate the characteristics of alignment algorithms.

ABSTRACT

The use of Computer Aided Detection (CAD) software has been previously documented as a valuable tool to improve specialist training in Radiology. This research assesses the utility of an educational software tool aimed to train residents in Radiology and other related medical specialties and students from Medicine degree. This in-house developed software, called JORCAD, integrates a CAD system based in Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with annotated cases from radiological image databases. The methodology followed for software validation was expert judgement after completing an interactive learning activity. Participants received a theoretical session and a software usage tutorial and afterwards utilized the application in a dedicated workstation to analyze a series of proposed cases of thorax computed tomography (CT) and mammography. A total of 26 expert participants from the Radiology Department at Salamanca University Hospital (15 specialists and 11 residents) fulfilled the activity and evaluated different aspects through a series of surveys: software usability, case navigation tools, CAD module utility for learning and JORCAD educational capabilities. Participants also graded imaging cases to establish JORCAD usefulness for training radiology residents. According to the statistical analysis of survey results and expert cases scoring, along with their opinions, it can be concluded that JORCAD software is a useful tool for training future specialists. The combination of CAD with annotated cases from validated databases enhances learning, offering a second opinion and changing the usual training paradigm. Including software as JORCAD in residency training programs of Radiology and other medical specialties would have a positive effect on trainees' background knowledge.

ABSTRACT

Design Science Research (DSR) combines quantitative and qualitative approaches for educational research. One of the critical steps of DSR is the evaluation phase. In this phase, the artifact's utility, fitness, and usefulness are noted and reviewed. Since the DSR applied to health science is limited, this paper aims to present the evaluation phase of a study that developed an artifact for training student radiographers in chest pattern recognition. The artifact which is described in detail elsewhere by Mdletshe et al. [1], was developed as a tailor-made solution in medical radiation sciences education (MRSE), using DSR. During the evaluation of the artifact, the System Usability Scale (SUS) was used for the quantitative evaluation of the artifact. Meanwhile, the qualitative approach was performed using a hierarchy of qualitative criteria based on a review of multiple sources. This study demonstrated the DSR key concepts of the evaluation phase applied to health science. The presented case will help to demonstrate the implementation of the evaluation phase in a research project in health sciences (MRSE).

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Background: Bipolar disorder is considered a psychiatric disease without any effective screening questionnaire to monitor and manage Iranian patients. This study aims to implement a researcher-made questionnaire in the form of educational interactive software for better management of patients with bipolar disorder and prevent further complications. Methods: The present cross-sectional study evaluated the efficacy of psychoeducational-interactive-therapeutic software for patients with bipolar disorder, which is a network-based software providing a researcher-made questionnaire in a planned manner. This software can predict the occurrence of future bipolar episodes for each patient by using artificial intelligence algorithms after the occurrence of two mood episodes as the training phase. The patients with bipolar disorder were asked to use the software for a year and their mood episodes were compared before and after using the software. We evaluate the reliability of the questionnaires in the software with internal consistency using alpha Cronbach test and test-retest analysis. Face validity and content validity were also evaluated. Results: The content validity index of the instrument was 93%, and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the whole questionnaire was 0.955. Also, the ICC coefficient for this questionnaire is above 0.70, and the correlation coefficient of the answers in all constructs of the questionnaire is more than 0.8. Thirty male patients with bipolar disorder who experienced four episodes of mood swings per year experienced an average of 2 mood episodes per year following the use of this software. Conclusion: Our Psychoeducational-interactive-therapeutic software is the first Persian language software based on artificial intelligence to monitor clinical symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder, which uses a standard questionnaire to predict the incidence of episodes of depression and mania in these patients.

ABSTRACT

Immunology is a knowledge area of paramount importance in life sciences and health care professional education with diverse applications, as well as for a general public understanding of issues related to vaccination. However, many concepts are complex and difficult to understand based only on conventional classes or static images. The use of tools, such as educational software, may enhance the learning of dynamic molecular phenomena that occur in our bodies. Virtual Immunology is a software that aims to facilitate the learning of certain complex immunology concepts. Herein, we present the "Antigen-antibody interactions" module that was used and evaluated by 127 students and 3 teachers from medical schools from 2 universities, 1 public and 1 private, both in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The pretest/posttest research design was used to assess student learning in a randomized sample. To evaluate user perceptions concerning software quality, 14 statements were analyzed using a Likert scale. Results indicate suitable evaluations from both students and teachers concerning the "Antigen-antibody module" as an auxiliary tool in immunology teaching. The software was well rated as an educational resource since it allows dynamically viewing immunological phenomena. In addition, its ease of use and immunological process visualization were the best-evaluated parameters by the students, who recommended this software module as an auxiliary learning tool. The use of the evaluated software may motivate students and aid in the understanding of immunology-related concepts, becoming a complementary tool that may enhance the teaching-learning process.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The acceleration and availability of digital tools has fundamentally changed the classroom environment, making selecting the correct tools an increasingly important function for instructors. To assist educators seeking to introduce such tools into the classroom, this research describes the acceptance of productivity software as a pharmacy management course and collaboration tool by second-year student pharmacists. METHODS: A mixed methods approach assessed student pharmacists' acceptance and use of a cloud-based, productivity platform. All students were provided with Evernote Business to manage group-based assignments, facilitate team-based projects, and store course materials. Students were surveyed at three time points throughout the semester using a validated instrument based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). Software acceptance and applicability were assessed across time points and structural equation modeling determined UTAUT model fit. Focus groups provided direct student feedback guided by UTAUT. RESULTS: Baseline technology acceptance was lower for Evernote than Blackboard. Effort expectancy and attitudes toward technology improved in three of four items each for Evernote and anxiety toward using the new software declined from baseline. Model fit was not ideal, suggesting similar conditions for acceptance of either platform and performance expectancy may not significantly predict intention to use. Student feedback suggested that acceptance may be improved if software has college-wide buy-in and was required. CONCLUSIONS: Introducing productivity software in the middle of the curriculum is not ideal, but could be impactful if provided earlier, integrated with existing systems, and aligned with observed students' learning needs.

ABSTRACT

Much as it is one of the cornerstones of undergraduate medical studies, students' scientific activity is yet to realize its full potential. The purpose of the study was to develop and validate a digital platform to meet the information needs of students' scientific activity at the University of Medical Sciences of Ciego de Avila, Cuba, from March 2018 to February 2019. The research was structured into three work stages: characterization, design and evaluation. The participants were third-year students majoring in medicine, dentistry, nursing and health technologies. The platform was designed on WordPress templates. Respondents ranked the information received about scientific activity as fair, and a considerable number of them did not have any information about the subject, though most thought such knowledge was necessary. Attendance by respondents to students' scientific meetings and national and international conferences was alarmingly low, as was the publication of their scientific results. The design and implementation of the digital platform make it possible to meet information needs concerning students' scientific activity, though such needs should be evaluated in all the years of the various majors. Generalization of the platform to other higher education institutions may contribute to undergraduate scientific research training in Cuba(AU)
