ABSTRACT

This 328-page book titled "Reimagining Nigeria's Educational System: Improving Academic Performance Through High Stakes Standardized Testing" discusses the beginnings of the Nigerian educational systems, its current challenges, and the possibility of improving its performance through high stakes standardized testing. The author, Professor Joseph A. Balogun, is a Nigerian-American academic, and a retired Professor of Physiotherapy at Chicago State University, USA. He previously lectured at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ife-Ife, Southwest Nigeria and has had a distinguished academic career spanning over forty years. He introduces the book by reminiscing on the glorious education system of Nigeria in the 1970s and 1980s. This is followed by the discussion of the current dismal state of the Nigerian educational systems where the best Nigerian Universities barely appear among the ten best universities in Africa.

ABSTRACT

Educational institutions and educators are significant in children's lives, and they have a crucial role in implementing policies, practices, and sexual education to enhance children's safety. Such policies and practices should be based on the voices of CSA survivors. This study explored child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors' viewpoints on their past experiences with educators and the educational system. A qualitative thematic approach was used to analyze 61 written testimonies collected in 2020-2021 by the Israeli Independent Public Inquiry on CSA. Two interrelated themes arose: (1) CSA survivors' retrospective perspectives of educators and the educational system's responses to signs of their CSA, described as ranging from abusive to life-saving. Specifically, they shared three types of responses: (a) harmful and hurtful; (b) dismissive and ignoring; and (c) accepting and attending. (2) The second theme described the survivors' messages to educators to promote constructive change. The survivors conveyed expectations that educators should play a central role in CSA prevention, detection, and intervention and, specifically, the need for educators to receive professional training, provide beneficial sexual education, and identify and respond to CSA. The findings promoted moving beyond individual-level interventions to focus on improving educational institutional and organizational cultures related to CSA in both national and international contexts.

ABSTRACT

This paper takes a terminological approach to the concept of high intellectual abilities, highlighting the distinctive aspects of the way it is addressed in the Portuguese educational context. It outlines the existing conceptual differentiation in the field of higher abilities, emphasizing how the main characteristics are described and including the strengths and weaknesses of current teaching and learning processes in Portugal. As we will show, educational work with these students in Portuguese schools is characterized by unequal regulation compared to other educational needs, by an imbalance of educational processes aimed at these gifted students, and by clear underdiagnosis that sometimes leads to them being ignored in the classroom, with the consequent harm that this can cause to their overall development and to their academic and professional careers. The paper emphasizes the importance of teacher training in Portugal as an aspect that could be key to reversing, as far as possible, this gap in educational processes-which currently include educational inclusion for all their students as part of the key action principles in the Portuguese educational system.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the experiences of minority stress and resilience among LGBTQ+ students in educational settings and identifies critical contributors to their well-being. To highlight the unique educational experiences of LGBTQ+ participants a qualitative research strategy was employed. We conducted narrative interviews with 27 LGBTQ+ people aged 17 to 41 who are or have been enrolled in primary, secondary or tertiary education in Slovenia. The results indicate that minority stress is a significant in their educational experiences, with various deleterious effects. The testimonies of our respondents indicate, albeit to a lesser extent, that the education system can enhance the resilience of LGBTQ+ youth and mitigate the negative impacts of minority stress. This study confirms prior research on minority stress effects on LGBTQ+ individuals. It asserts that LGBTQ+ youth experience minority stress within the education system, while emphasizing that certain aspects of resilience can significantly mitigate these negative effects. As social support emerged as a significant factor in our study, it would be reasonable to investigate how school personnel can enhance LGBT youths' resilience in the future. Additionally, it would be beneficial to investigate how the support of peers and (chosen) families influences the school experiences of LGBTQ+ students.

ABSTRACT

The process of becoming a public teacher in Spain requires a long period of preparation. This long period of preparation has an impact on the psychosocial environment of the candidates. Differences have been observed in the psychosocial area according to gender in pre-service teachers. This research aims to study the relationship between the study hours per day, stress, burnout syndrome and resilience according to gender and to study the differences in the effects according to gender using multigroup equation modeling. A multigroup structural equation analysis has been proposed according to the gender of the participants. Parametric tests were used for the descriptive analysis of the results. The sample consists of 4117 participants, 1363 males and 2754 females. The instruments used to collect the data were a self-made questionnaire, Perceived Stress Questionnaire, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory. All the instruments have been validated and adapted to the sample. The data reveal that there are variations in the effects of the variables according to the gender of the participants. In conclusion, it is affirmed that gender is a very important factor in coping with the competitive examination process for state-public-teaching institutions, as well as in avoiding the appearance of disruptive states generated by this preparation process.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate how teaching practices in the Italian inclusive education system align with the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which is aimed at providing access to education for all students, including those with disabilities. In line with Article 2 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which requires states to promote Universal Design (UD) in all aspects of life, including education, this research examines the extent to which the Italian education system meets this requirement. The study involved teachers who participated in a course on inclusive education. The research was conducted in three phases, including the introduction of UDL, identification of teachers' perceptions and initial reactions to UDL, compilation of a questionnaire related to UDL checkpoints, and a focus group discussion on teachers' attitudes towards UDL and the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the classroom. The analysis focused on the first UDL principle, "Provide Multiple Means of Representation," which emphasizes the need to present information in an accessible way to learners with disabilities. The findings revealed that despite not having previous training on UDL, teachers in the Italian inclusive education system use ICTs in their daily teaching practices to make knowledge accessible, which is in line with the UDL principles. However, the study also highlighted a lack of awareness and reflection on the use of ICTs in teaching, suggesting the need for specific training to enhance inclusive practices. This study contributes to the ongoing dialogue on inclusive education in Italy and highlights the importance of promoting UD principles in education to ensure that all learners, regardless of their abilities, have equal access to education. Furthermore, it underscores the significance of providing adequate training and support to teachers to facilitate inclusive practices and improve learning outcomes for all students.

ABSTRACT

There is no systematic geriatric supply service and active geriatric wards are very rarely found in Hungary. That is why these wards need to be established in every leading county hospital as a regional system. The reasons for this lack are that active geriatric wards do not exist in the financing agreements, and, on the other hand, there is no sufficient number of geriatric specialists to fulfil the minimum personal conditions of a geriatric ward. The hospitals do not operate geriatric wards in lack of specialists, hence management pathways cannot be built in the system, therefore, no colleagues choose this subspecialty. Undoubtedly, the educational system does not support the training of geriatricians and, as a consequence of European Union regulations, secondary geriatrician subspecialization is not supported any more. The situation is extremely disadvantageous, most of the hospitals do not realize the importance of geriatrics, hence they do not work on establishing a care pathway between active care (internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, neurology, etc.), active geriatrics and chronic care. There is no geriatric outpatient service, daytime hospital system, their existence and operation are contingent. Finally, no geriatric consultant system (mobile, county, territorial) has been established. Orv Hetil. 2023; 164(23): 891-893.

ABSTRACT

All children, including those living with disabilities, have the right to be provided with Inclusive Education (IE) together with appropriate support in scholarly settings. A key factor for educational inclusion is peers' attitudes towards disabilities, which impact disabled students' social participation and learning. Physical Education (PE) classes represent an opportunity for students with disabilities to get psychological, social, health, and educational benefits. This study aimed to assess Spanish students' attitudes regarding their peers with disabilities during PE lessons and to explore possible differences between gender, school location, and age group. The sample consisted of 1437 students from public schools in Extremadura (Spain) from the primary and secondary stages. Participants completed the Attitude towards Students with Disabilities in Physical Education (EAADEF-EP) Questionnaire. The Mann-Whitney U test was carried out to establish differences in scores according to sex, school location, age group, and correlations between age and item scores using the Spearman's Rho test. The results displayed significant differences in the total and item scores considering sex and centre location, with good reliability values (Cronbach's alpha = 0.86). The EAADEF-EP Questionnaire has proven to be a quick, easy, and inexpensive tool to assess attitudes. Girls and participants whose school was in a rural setting had better attitudes towards inclusion. This study's results highlight the importance of carrying out educational actions and programs to improve students' attitudes towards their peers with disabilities considering the influences of the studied variables.

ABSTRACT

The quality of a country's education system is both an indicator of its present level of development and a predictor of future economic advancement. This study intended to explore the impact of the "expanding power and strengthening counties" reform on the supply of basic public education resources. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used to analyze the panel data of 114 counties in Sichuan Province from 2005 to 2017, including 78 counties with expanded powers. The study found that the "expanded power strong counties (EPSC)" had a significant positive impact on the supply level of funding resources measured by per capita public education expenditure. The time effect of the EPSC on the supply of teacher resources for county public education was manifested as a sharp increase in the supply level in the three years before the reform. The supply level tended to be stable after four years of reform. The economic resources supply level was relatively stable in the first three years and rose sharply after four years. There was a downward trend after the reform for 8 years. The structural effect has shown a more significant incentive effect on the supply of public education resources to strong and weak counties. But compared with the weak counties with lower economic development levels, the strong counties with higher economic development levels have a more noticeable effect of their decentralization reform on improving the supply level of public education resources.

ABSTRACT

Education quality has become an important issue and has received considerable attention around the world, especially due to its relevant repercussions on the socio-economical development of society. In recent years, many nations have realized the need for a highly skilled workforce to thrive in the emerging knowledge-based economy. They have consequently adopted strategies to identify the lines of action to improve the education quality. In response to the government's efforts to improve the education quality in Colombia, this study examines the current perceptions of the education system from the perspective of key local stakeholders. Therefore, we used a survey that contained open-ended questions to collect information about the limitations and difficulties of the education process for several groups of participants. The collected answers were categorized into a variety of topics using a Latent Dirichlet Allocation based model. Consequently, the students', teachers' and parents' answers were analyzed separately to obtain a general landscape of the perceptions of the education system. Evaluation metrics, such as topic coherence, were quantitatively analyzed to assess the modelling performance. In addition, a methodology for the hyper-parameters setting and the final topic labelling was presented. The results suggest that topic modelling strategies are a viable alternative to identify strategic lines of action and to obtain a macro-perspective of the perceptions of the education system.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study compares the challenges of the nursing educational system in Iran and Turkey at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. levels. DESIGN: A narrative review. DATA SOURCES: A comprehensive computer-based search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, ISI web of knowledge, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and Science direct databases, without time limit, until May 2022. Finally, 31 article were finally included in the study. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines were used. RESULTS: Some challenges of the nursing educational system were common to the two countries such as: problems in the student enrollment system, the need to add courses to improve critical thinking skills and problem solving and creativity, lack of part-time courses for postgraduate and doctoral students, lack of attention to training community health students, employment of students in hospitals without assessment of clinical skills, lack of job opportunities for PhD students in hospitals. In Turkey, compared to Iran, there are strengths in the nursing educational system, including: have an accreditation program, giving importance to the discussion of research and evidence-based care in undergraduate and strengthening the clinical skills of doctoral students. CONCLUSIONS: Iranian policymakers can use the strengths of the Turkish nursing education system, which is close to Iran in terms of context, to help improve this education system. Given the many challenges the two countries face in this regard, we suggest that by comparing and modeling the nursing education system of leading countries in this field such, both Iran and Turkey take effective steps to grow and improve the nursing education system.

ABSTRACT

Since the success of any educational system is tied to the teachers' professional commitment, discovering the determinants of this construct seems vital. In line with this, a huge number of inquiries have evaluated the effects of personal, contextual, and professional variables on teachers' professional commitment. However, the impacts of job satisfaction and collective efficacy have remained unclear. Against this backdrop, the current review article seeks to theoretically explain the impacts of these constructs on EFL teachers' professional commitment using the available documents. The review findings illuminated that EFL teachers' professional commitment heavily relies on their job satisfaction and collective efficacy beliefs. The implications for educational principals and teacher educators are finally discussed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although the need for justice and the elimination of injustice (or discrimination) is now a universally accepted principle, discrimination is still an unpleasant experience for many nursing students. This study aimed to explain the experiences of nursing students of educational discrimination and find out the main factors that cause this feeling. METHODS: This is a qualitative study conducted in the nursing faculty of Shahr-e-Kord and the Iran university of medical science (IUMS) in Iran. Twelve nursing students were selected by purposeful sampling method and data were collected through face-to-face and in-depth interviews with semi-structured questions. All interviews were analyzed according to the content analysis method. RESULTS: Three main themes and ten subcategories appeared. Extracted themes include: "inappropriate behavior of nursing professors (or instructors) " with 3 subcategories (1- discriminatory behavior by nursing professors (or instructors), 2- lack of sufficient self-confidence in nursing professors and transferring it to the student, and 3- the educator role in motivating or eliminating motivation); "Strict rules" with 3 subcategories (1- inequality in implementation of rights and rules among students of different disciplines, 2- differences in compliance with laws and regulations, and 3- nurses are being strictly monitored), and " Lack of nursing professional independence " with 4 subcategories (1- lack of authority, 2- lack of supportive organizations for nurses, 3- lack of proper social status of nursing in society, and 4- the high authority and power of physicians over other disciplines). CONCLUSIONS: In our study, it was shown that nursing students feel the most discrimination in front of medical students. Feelings of discrimination reduce self-confidence in nursing students. Therefore, nursing educators and professors must think of a solution, or at least they should not cause this feeling in them through inappropriate behavior and discriminatory speech and words.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken to contain it have had a disproportionate impact on families with young children, especially with disabilities. This study examined factors associated with burden and growth among parents of young children in Israel, while comparing parents of children with and without disabilities. We hypothesized that the association between family functioning, informal social support, and perceived adequacy of educational services and burden and growth would be moderated by disabilities. An online questionnaire was completed by 675 parents of young children, 95 of them with disability. The moderating effect of disability on burden and growth was examined using PROCESS. Compared to parents of children without disabilities, greater burden was found among parents of children with disabilities, but levels of growth were similar. External support was lacking for both parent groups. Educational services were perceived as severely inadequate. Lower perceived adequate educational services were associated with greater burden. On the other hand, higher levels of family functioning (i.e., family cohesion and adaptability) and greater adequacy of educational services were associated with growth. The results show that while burden was greater for parents of children with disabilities, growth during the COVID-19 period was possible for parents of both groups. The findings also pointed to the importance of the family system for sustaining the wellbeing of its members in lockdown situations. Put together, the findings highlight the importance of planning for such national and global emergencies.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: This study investigated gender and educational differences in trends in schoolwork pressure between 2001 and 2017 in nationally representative samples of Dutch adolescents in secondary education. METHODS: Data from five surveys of the Dutch Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study were used. RESULTS: Across the surveys, an increase in perceived schoolwork pressure was observed. Girls and adolescents enrolled in the higher educational levels reported higher levels of perceived schoolwork pressure and the strongest increase in schoolwork pressure over time. Especially for girls, there was a stronger increase in schoolwork pressure for those enrolled in higher educational tracks. CONCLUSIONS: Increases in schoolwork pressure over time were stronger among Dutch girls and students in the higher educational levels. Over time, schoolwork pressure increased most among girls in the highest educational levels. Explanations and implications for these results are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Considering the high rates of mortality and incarceration among young black Brazilians, the poor, and the periphery residents, we present this transdisciplinary research that sought to qualify the events, transitions, and ruptures that mark their trajectories, analysing their life cycle to unveil its links, movements, and risk factors. We started with the survey of Planos Individuais de Atendimento (Individual Care Plans - PIA) of adolescents in compliance with a socio-educational measure, and later with an active search for these subjects, to apply a questionnaire and invite them to tell their life stories by using the methodology of Narrative Memoir. From a case analysis, which reveals the universal potential of each singular life, we analyzed four axes identified from the young man's own discourse, namely: State violence, adolescence, mortality, and wager. In contrast to the precariousness and the lack of support in their lives, risking death, a determined wager, in the form of an unsavory cooperation, may create possible way outs.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The Every Student Succeeds Act supports personalized learning (PL) to close achievement gaps of diverse K-12 learners in the United States. Implementing PL into a classroom entails a paradigm change of the educational system. However, it is demanding to transform traditional practice into a personalized one under the pressure of the annual standardized testing while it is unclear which PL approaches are more likely to result in better academic outcomes than others. Using national survey data of ELA teachers in identified learner-centered schools, this study compared high and low-performing learner-centered schools (determined by their standardized test results) in terms of their use of five PL features (personalized learning plan, competency-based student progress, criterion-referenced assessment, project- or problem-based learning, and multi-year mentoring) and their use of technology for the four functions of planning, learning, assessment, and recordkeeping. Generally, teachers in high-performing schools implemented PL more thoroughly and utilized technology for more functions than those in low-performing schools. Teachers in high-performing schools more frequently considered career goals when creating personal learning plans, shared the project outcomes with the community, and assessed non-academic outcomes. They stayed longer with the same students and developed close relationships with more students. Also, they more frequently used technology for sharing resources and reported having a more powerful technology system than those in low-performing schools. This study informs educators, administrators, and researchers of which PL approaches and technology uses are more likely to result in better academic outcomes measured by standardized assessments.

ABSTRACT

This article analyzes health mediation among equals as an educational strategy against risk behaviors in young people from both the educational and associative systems in Seville (Spain), based on qualitative research, with the aim of assessing and comparing its impact in those areas. To this end, interviews with 49 professionals and 427 adolescents were conducted in discussion groups. Results acknowledge mediation as individual or group intervention accepted by young people as advice and information on health issues and conflict resolution, but also as a method for data collection in order to obtain a community health diagnosis. The educational system implements this strategy, but in associations it seems to work better, particularly in the psycho-emotional and sexual spheres. Unfortunately, intervention programs are usually discontinuous due to lack of resources and territorial variability.
