ABSTRACT

Energy management plan is utilized as an optimum strategy by using solar and wind energies, as a new preliminary implementation. The aim of the study is to create an optimum strategy through an optimization of an energy management system. The study implemented an onsite model, two numerical approaches, and an optimization analysis on a Mediterranean port. Two approaches have been used: solar energy is applied experimentally and numerically, and then wind energy is simulated. An optimization analysis integrated the two approaches together to control their operation. The results showed the installed solar panels provided sufficient generated power for the buildings. Also, the simulated wind arrays showed good behavior with increased power coefficient for the wind turbines, for future implementation. These results were validated using the DesignBuilder software and showed accurate values regarding the experiment for solar panels and CFD simulation. Eventually, a Pareto optimality analysis is applied between the solar and wind energies to reveal an energy management plan. Renewable energy offered energy to support the consumption of the port's buildings.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Environmental pollutions with heavy metals may have toxic effects on human health and development. One of the most detrimental is lead exposure, which may disturb neurodevelopment and linear growth in children. However, data on the effect of lead exposure on nutritional and weight status in children are limited, thus this study aimed to assess the effect of blood lead (Pb) level on nutritional and weight status in preadolescent schoolchildren from the industrialized, mining region in southwestern Poland. METHODS: Our study sample involved N = 709 schoolchildren (402 boys and 307 girls) in the preadolescent developmental period (7-11 years of age for boys and 7-10 years of age for girls). Anthropometric measurements were used to assess nutritional and weight status: body mass index (BMI), mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and skinfolds thicknesses (triceps, subscapular, abdominal and the sum of skinfolds). Blood Pb level was evaluated and divided into two groups: above (>3.7 µg/dL) and below median value (≤3.7 µg/dL). RESULTS: Analysis of covariance (with children's age controlled as a covariate) revealed that children with blood Pb level above median value had significantly lower values of BMI, MUAC and all skinfolds (at least p < 0.01). However, this effect was significant only in boys, whereas in girls differences were non-significant (p > 0.05). The highest effect size of blood Pb level was noted for skinfolds thicknesses (partial η2: 0.015 for the sum of skinfolds). CONCLUSIONS: Nutritional status in children with higher blood Pb level is significantly impaired in preadolescent boys, who appear to be more sensitive to this environmental factor. Our findings indicate a particular need for nutritional and environmental interventions among preadolescent children in regions with higher lead exposure.

ABSTRACT

The recycling of e-waste by the informal sector has brought countries in the Global South raw materials (e.g. metals and plastics), second-hand electronic equipment and components, and economic opportunities in conjunction with appalling environmental pollutions and health problems. Despite the longstanding international and national legislation regulating transnational trade and domestic recycling, informal e-waste economies are still clustering in many Global South countries. This study offers historically and geographically specific explanations of this conundrum, by interrogating the multi-scalar regulatory frameworks in which the informal e-waste economies and their pollutions are embedded, by drawing on China, particularly the former global e-waste hub-Guiyu town, as the case study. We argue that the contested and problematic application of current international and national legislation in regulating e-waste is in part pertaining to the slippery definition of what counts as "e-waste" and its paradoxical nature as both resources and pollutants. At the global scale, trajectories of global e-waste flows are shaped by the multitude of loopholes, contradictions and ambiguous articles left by the Basel Convention and by different countries' disparate attitudes towards the e-waste trade. At the national scale, the ambiguities and contradictions in the Basel Convention have been passed on to and shaped China's national e-waste regulatory frameworks. China's equivocal legislation, paradoxical attitude, and formal enterprises' weak competence contribute to the rise of informal e-waste recycling in Guiyu. Yet, China's e-waste regime has been greatly restructured within the past decade, with formal recycling enterprises playing an increasingly significant role.

ABSTRACT

We analyzed a coal tar polluted aquifer of a former gasworks site in Thuringia (Germany) for the presence and function of aromatic compound-degrading bacteria (ACDB) by 16S rRNA Illumina sequencing, bamA clone library sequencing and cultivation attempts. The relative abundance of ACDB was highest close to the source of contamination. Up to 44% of total 16S rRNA sequences were affiliated to ACDB including genera such as Azoarcus, Georgfuchsia, Rhodoferax, Sulfuritalea (all Betaproteobacteria) and Pelotomaculum (Firmicutes). Sequencing of bamA, a functional gene marker for the anaerobic benzoyl-CoA pathway, allowed further insights into electron-accepting processes in the aquifer: bamA sequences of mainly nitrate-reducing Betaproteobacteria were abundant in all groundwater samples, whereas an additional sulfate-reducing and/or fermenting microbial community (Deltaproteobacteria, Firmicutes) was restricted to a highly contaminated, sulfate-depleted groundwater sampling well. By conducting growth experiments with groundwater as inoculum and nitrate as electron acceptor, organisms related to Azoarcus spp. were identified as key players in the degradation of toluene and ethylbenzene. An organism highly related to Georgfuchsia toluolica G5G6 was enriched with p-xylene, a particularly recalcitrant compound. The anaerobic degradation of p-xylene requires a metabolic trait that was not described for members of the genus Georgfuchsia before. In line with this, we were able to identify a putative 4-methylbenzoyl-CoA reductase gene cluster in the respective enrichment culture, which is possibly involved in the anaerobic degradation of p-xylene.

ABSTRACT

The daily intake levels and trend of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins(PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans(PCDFs), polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs) of general population of several developed countries are reviewed. Based on the data of China, PCDD-Fs levels in Chinese human milk and blood were less than that of other countries, in addition, a daily intake of PCDD-Fs for Chinese general population was estimated in the present paper, the tolerable daily intake of Chinese general population was less than that the World Health Organization proposed.
