ABSTRACT

Leishmania parasites cause a spectrum of diseases termed leishmaniasis, which manifests in two main clinical forms, cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. Leishmania promastigotes transit from proliferative exponential to quiescent stationary phases inside the insect vector, a relevant step that recapitulates early molecular events of metacyclogenesis. During the insect blood meal of the mammalian hosts, the released parasites interact initially with the skin, an event marked by temperature changes. Deep knowledge on the molecular events activated during Leishmania-host interactions in each step is crucial to develop better therapies and to understand the pathogenesis. In this study, the proteomes of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis (La), Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis (Lb), and Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum (syn L. L. chagasi) (Lc) were analyzed using quantitative proteomics to uncover the proteome modulation in three different conditions related to growth phases and temperature shifts: 1) exponential phase (Exp); 2) stationary phase (Sta25) and; 3) stationary phase subjected to heat stress (Sta34). Functional validations were performed using orthogonal techniques, focusing on α-tubulin, gp63 and heat shock proteins (HSPs). Species-specific and condition-specific modulation highlights the plasticity of the Leishmania proteome, showing that pathways related to metabolism and cytoskeleton are significantly modulated from exponential to stationary growth phases, while protein folding, unfolded protein binding, signaling and microtubule-based movement were differentially altered during temperature shifts. This study provides an in-depth proteome analysis of three Leishmania spp., and contributes compelling evidence of the molecular alterations of these parasites in conditions mimicking the interaction of the parasites with the insect vector and vertebrate hosts. SIGNIFICANCE: Leishmaniasis disease manifests in two main clinical forms according to the infecting Leishmania species and host immune responses, cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. In Brazil, cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is associated with L. braziliensis and L. amazonensis, while visceral leishmaniasis, also called kala-azar, is caused by L. infantum. Leishmania parasites remodel their proteomes during growth phase transition and changes in their mileu imposed by the host, including temperature. In this study, we performed a quantitative mass spectrometry-based proteomics to compare the proteome of three New world Leishmania species, L. amazonensis (La), L. braziliensis (Lb) and L. infantum (syn L. chagasi) (Lc) in three conditions: a) exponential phase at 25 °C (Exp); b) stationary phase at 25 °C (Sta25) and; c) stationary phase subjected to temperature stress at 34 °C (Sta34). This study provides an in-depth proteome analysis of three Leishmania spp. with varying pathophysiological outcomes, and contributes compelling evidence of the molecular alterations of these parasites in conditions mimicking the interaction of the parasites with the insect vector and vertebrate hosts.

ABSTRACT

El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar el desempeño deportivo de la delegación chilena en los Juegos Panamericanos celebrados entre los años 1951 y 2023, haciendo uso de datos retrospectivos y proyectivos a través de series temporales de tiempo. Para esto se empleó un diseño cuantitativo, no experimental y longitudinal de tendencias y un método de suavización exponencial simple, que utiliza promedios históricos y que permite realizar una predicción o comportamiento futuro basado en una media ponderada de los valores actuales y de los pasados. A partir de los resultados obtenidos, fue posible concluir que, en las últimas décadas, la ubicación de Chile en el ranking de los Juegos Panamericanos se ha estabilizado en torno a un onceavo lugar, posición pronosticada para Santiago 2023. Manteniéndose condiciones similares, el desempeño deportivo general y específico no tendría un quiebre exponencial de la tendencia y los resultados no resultan favorables, específicamente en lo que respecta a la obtención de medallas de oro y la posición general de la delegación.


The objective of this paper is to analyze the sports performance of the Chilean delegation in the Pan American Games held between 1951 and 2023, using retrospective and projective data through time series. For this purpose, a quantitative, non-experimental and longitudinal design of trends and a simple exponential smoothing method was used, which uses historical averages and allows a prediction or future behavior based on a weighted average of current and past values. From the results obtained, it was possible to conclude that, in recent decades, Chile's position in the Pan American Games ranking has stabilized around eleventh place, a position predicted for Santiago 2023. Maintaining similar conditions, the general and specific sporting performance would not have an exponential break in the trend and the results are not favorable, specifically in terms of obtaining gold medals and the overall position of the delegation.


O objetivo deste artigo é analisar o desempenho esportivo da delegação chilena nos Jogos Pan-Americanos realizados entre 1951 e 2023, usando dados retrospectivos e projetivos por meio de séries temporais. Para isso, foi utilizado um desenho quantitativo, não experimental e longitudinal de tendências e um método de suavização exponencial simples, que utiliza médias históricas e permite uma previsão do comportamento futuro com base em uma média ponderada dos valores atuais e passados. Com base nos resultados obtidos, foi possível concluir que, nas últimas décadas, a posição do Chile no ranking dos Jogos Pan-Americanos se estabilizou em torno do 11º lugar, posição prevista para Santiago 2023. Mantendo-se condições semelhantes, o desempenho esportivo geral e específico não teria uma quebra exponencial na tendência e os resultados não são favoráveis, especificamente em termos de conquista de medalhas de ouro e posição geral da delegação.

ABSTRACT

Ignoring the presence of dependent censoring in data analysis can lead to biased estimates, for example, not considering the effect of abandonment of the tuberculosis treatment may influence inferences about the cure probability. In order to assess the relationship between cure and abandonment outcomes, we propose a copula Bayesian approach. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to introduce a Bayesian survival regression model, capable of taking into account the dependent censoring in the adjustment. So, this proposed approach is based on Clayton's copula, to provide the relation between survival and dependent censoring times. In addition, the Weibull and the piecewise exponential marginal distributions are considered in order to fit the times. A simulation study is carried out to perform comparisons between different scenarios of dependence, different specifications of prior distributions, and comparisons with the maximum likelihood inference. Finally, we apply the proposed approach to a tuberculosis treatment adherence dataset of an HIV cohort from Alvorada-RS, Brazil. Results show that cure and abandonment outcomes are negatively correlated, that is, as long as the chance of abandoning the treatment increases, the chance of tuberculosis cure decreases.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to describe the morphology and estimate live weight from body measurements of Socorro Island Merino lambs. A group of Socorro Island Merino lambs was recorded from birth to year for live weight, rump width, rump length, withers height, body length, cannon bone perimeter, and chest girth, width, and depth. The effect of the lamb type on body measurements and live weight was analyzed using ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to estimate the relationship between body measurements and live weight, multiple linear regressions were fitted to obtain prediction equations of live weight from the body measurements and finally, chest girth was used to generate prediction equations using linear and exponential models. At birth and at year, differences were observed in body measurements, especially those related to the thoracic region, with crossbred males showing the highest values. Live weight was correlated with almost all the body measurements, with the highest coefficients observed with chest girth, chest width, and chest depth. Live weight can be accurately predicted from multiple regression equations using several body measurements, but using only chest girth (CG) as a predictor, the exponential equation W0-365 = 0.9142 exp(0.0462 CG) showed the best accuracy.

ABSTRACT

Currently, managing a group of satellites or robot manipulators requires coordinating their motion and work in a cooperative way to complete complex tasks. The attitude motion coordination and synchronization problems are challenging since attitude motion evolves in non-Euclidean spaces. Moreover, the equation of motions of the rigid body are highly nonlinear. This paper studies the attitude synchronization problem of a group of fully actuated rigid bodies over a directed communication topology. To design the synchronization control law, we exploit the cascade structure of the rigid body's kinematic and dynamic models. First, we propose a kinematic control law that induces attitude synchronization. As a second step, an angular velocity-tracking control law is designed for the dynamic subsystem. We use the exponential coordinates of rotation to describe the body's attitude. Such coordinates are a natural and minimal parametrization of rotation matrices which almost describe every rotation on the Special Orthogonal group SO(3). We provide simulation results to show the performance of the proposed synchronization controller.

ABSTRACT

The research on which we report in this paper was framed within the socioepistemological theory and dealt with the fundamental role of variational practices in the understanding of COVID-19 pandemic graphs. Given the proliferation of mathematical graphs related to the pandemic in the media, we proposed to analyse the variational practices in use in the interpretation of graphs of exponential behaviour that a Chilean newscast of high rating used to inform the population about the pandemic in Chile. For this purpose, a thematic analysis intertwined with documentary analysis techniques was carried out, in order to describe the types of graphs shown in the newscast, and a variational reference system was studied to analyse the use of variational practices. To obtain our results, the types of graphs most frequently shown in the newscast at the beginning of the pandemic were identified and the use of the variational practices of comparison, seriation and prediction in such graphs was analysed. In conclusion, the need is discussed for the conceptual evolution of the exponential function to be accompanied by a pragmatic evolution in school that favours the use and development of variational practices in the student body.

ABSTRACT

The description of the genetic potential is the first step to estimating amino acid requirements and the ideal amino acid relation (IAAR). The aim of this study was to estimate the parameters that describe the daily maximum theoretical nitrogen retention (NRmaxT, mg/BWkg0.67), daily nitrogen maintenance requirement (NMR, mg/BWkg0.67), protein quality (b), dietary efficiency of the limiting amino acid (bc-1) and determine the lysine requirement and the IAAR for Japanese quail breeders. Two nitrogen balance assays were performed, one assay using 49 quails distributed in seven treatments (protein levels between 70.1 and 350.3 g/kg) and seven replicates and other assay to determine the IAAR by the use of bc-1, 12 treatments and 10 replicate, with a control diet (CD) and 11 treatments that had limited essential amino acids by providing only 60% of the CD. The values obtained for NRmaxT, NMR, b and bc-1 were 3386.61, 0.000486 and 0.000101, respectively. The daily intake of Lys was 291 mg/bird day. Lys was set at 100% for determining the IAAR: 87, 67, 21, 117, 96, 66, 142, 39, and 133 for Met + Cys, Thr, Trp, Arg, Val, Ile, Leu, His, and Phr + Tyr, respectively, for Japanese quail breeders.

ABSTRACT

In this work we obtain new lower and upper optimal bounds for general (exponential) indices of a graph. In the same direction, we show new inequalities involving some well-known topological indices like the generalized atom-bound connectivity index $ ABC_\alpha $ and the generalized second Zagreb index $ M_2^\alpha $. Moreover, we solve some extremal problems for their corresponding exponential indices ($ e^{ABC_\alpha} $ and $ e^{M_2^{\alpha}} $).

ABSTRACT

Many countries are suffering from the COVID19 pandemic. The number of confirmed cases, recovered, and deaths are of concern to the countries having a high number of infected patients. Forecasting these parameters is a crucial way to control the spread of the disease and struggle with the pandemic. This study aimed at forecasting the number of cases and deaths in KSA using time-series and well-known statistical forecasting techniques including Exponential Smoothing and Linear Regression. The study is extended to forecast the number of cases in the main countries such that the US, Spain, and Brazil (having a large number of contamination) to validate the proposed models (Drift, SES, Holt, and ETS). The forecast results were validated using four evaluation measures. The results showed that the proposed ETS (resp. Drift) model is efficient to forecast the number of cases (resp. deaths). The comparison study, using the number of cases in KSA, showed that ETS (with RMSE reaching 18.44) outperforms the state-of-the art studies (with RMSE equal to 107.54). The proposed forecasting model can be used as a benchmark to tackle this pandemic in any country.

ABSTRACT

Worldwide, COVID-19 coronavirus disease is spreading rapidly in a second and third wave of infections. In this context of increasing infections, it is critical to know the probability of a specific number of cases being reported. We collated data on new daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 breakouts in: Argentina, Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Spain, U.K., and the United States, from the 20th of January, 2020 to 28th of August 2021. A selected sample of almost ten thousand data is used to validate the proposed models. Generalized Extreme-Value Distribution Type 1-Gumbel and Exponential (1, 2 parameters) models were introduced to analyze the probability of new daily confirmed cases. The data presented in this document for each country provide the daily probability of rate incidence. In addition, the frequencies of historical events expressed as a return period in days of the complete data set is provided.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the effect of an Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge on the digestible lysine (Lys) requirement for growing pigs, a nitrogen (N) balance assay was performed. Seventy-two castrated male pigs (19 ± 1.49 kg body weight [BW]) were allocated in a 2 × 6 factorial design composed of two immune activation states (control and LPS-challenged) and six dietary treatments with N levels of 0.94, 1.69, 2.09, 3.04, 3.23, and 3.97% N, as fed, where Lys was limiting, with six replicates and one pig per unit. The challenge consisted of an initial LPS dose of 30 µg/kg BW via intramuscular (IM) injection and a subsequent dose of 33.6 µg/kg BW after 48 h. The experimental period lasted 11 d and was composed of a 7-d adaptation and a subsequent 4-d sampling period in which N intake (NI), N excretion (NEX), and N deposition (ND) were evaluated. Inflammatory mediators and rectal temperature were assessed during the 4-d collection period. A three-way interaction (N levels × LPS challenge × time, P < 0.05) for IgG was observed. Additionally, two-way interactions (challenge × time, P < 0.05) were verified for IgA, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, haptoglobin, α-1-acid glycoprotein, total protein, and rectal temperature; and (N levels × time, P < 0.05) for transferrin, albumin, haptoglobin, total protein, and rectal temperature. LPS-challenged pigs showed lower (P < 0.05) feed intake. A two-way interaction (N levels × LPS challenge, P < 0.05) was observed for NI, NEX, and ND, with a clear dose-response (P < 0.05). LPS-challenged pigs showed lower NI and ND at 2.09% N and 1.69 to 3.97% N (P < 0.05), respectively, and higher NEX at 3.23% N (P < 0.05). The parameters obtained by a nonlinear model (N maintenance requirement, NMR and theoretical maximum N deposition, NDmaxT) were 152.9 and 197.1 mg/BWkg0.75/d for NMR, and 3,524.7 and 2,077.8 mg/BWkg0.75/d for NDmaxT, for control and LPS-challenged pigs, respectively. The estimated digestible Lys requirements were 1,994.83 and 949.16 mg/BWkg0.75/d for control and LPS-challenged pigs, respectively. The daily digestible Lys intakes required to achieve 0.68 and 0.54 times the NRmaxT value were 18.12 and 8.62 g/d, respectively, and the optimal dietary digestible Lys concentration may change depending on the feed intake levels. Based on the derived model parameters obtained in the N balance trial with lower cost and time, it was possible to differentiate the digestible Lys requirement for swine under challenging conditions.

ABSTRACT

In this article, we discuss an extension of the classical negative binomial cure rate model with piecewise exponential distribution of the time to event for concurrent causes, which enables the modeling of monotonic and non-monotonic hazard functions (ie, the shape of the hazard function is not assumed as in traditional parametric models). This approach produces a flexible cure rate model, depending on the choice of time partition. We discuss local influence on this negative binomial power piecewise exponential model. We report on Monte Carlo simulation studies and application of the model to real melanoma and leukemia datasets.

<b>Background and Objective:</b> Forage production in the tropics is generally asymmetrically distributed. Hence the need to use more complex models, especially when multiple comparisons are made and there are very large deviations from normality. The objective of this research is to fit a Generalized Additive Model for Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) model on accumulated dry matter data from <i>Brachiaria brizantha</i> using a model selection algorithm. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> A Box-Cox Power Exponential (BCPE) distribution was adjusted on the dry matter from <i>Brachiaria brizantha</i> data implementing GAMLSS in R (programming language). The accumulated dry matter data for <i>B. brizantha</i> were obtained from a study carried out on a farm in the state of Portuguesa, Venezuela. The explanatory covariate x was the interval between cuts (21, 28, 35 and 42 days). <b>Results:</b> The dependent variable (dry matter) exhibited both skewness and kurtosis. GAMLSS allowed flexible modeling of both the distribution of the dry matter yield from <i>B. brizantha</i> and the dependence of all the parameters of the distribution on intervals between cuttings. For the dry matter yield from <i>B. brizantha</i>, which exhibited skewness and leptokurtosis, the BCPE distribution, provided the best fit. <b>Conclusion:</b> The interval between cuttings showed an effect that is reflected in the average yield of dry matter from <i>B. brizantha</i>. The interval between cuts affected the skewness and the kurtosis of the distribution.

ABSTRACT

The confinement of atoms in impenetrable spherical boxes at the Hartree-Fock level was evaluated using a non-uniform fixed-grid variational method defined by a q-exponential. Applications from He to Ne in the ground state and some of them in excited states demonstrated that the method depends essentially on the boundary conditions to produce results as accurate as those reported in the literature with a relatively low number of integration points. An expression was defined for the virial theorem for atoms confined by spherical boxes and the confinement effect on the virial ratio evaluated. The results showed that the confinement of atoms results in much more significant changes to the kinetic than to the potential energy.

RESUMEN La aplicación de espectroscopia de impedancia eléctrica (EIE), es una técnica que se utiliza para monitorear, detectar y cuantificar microorganismos de interés biotecnológico, con la medición de parámetros eléctricos de respuesta rápida de un medio inoculado a temperatura y agitación constante mediante electrodos sumergidos. Realizando una comparación del modelo de crecimiento y el recuento en placa con los parámetros eléctricos de respuesta, se puede dar una correlación para romper la barrera tecnológica entre la microbiología clásica y los métodos rápidos de detección. La comparación de ambas técnicas fue realizada para determinar el máximo crecimiento de Lactobacillus casei (L. casei) ATCC 393. Se encontró que tras la inoculación, después de 24 h en condiciones microaerofílicas (37 °C), el máximo crecimiento microbiano fue registrado por medio de la EIE, mediante los parámetros -Z- (29,1057) y Deg-Deg0 (24,555°). En contraste con la técnica de conteo en placa, el crecimiento máximo se estimó a las 9 h. Los datos experimentales obtenidos mediante la EIE fueron ajustados por un circuito RC en serie, posteriormente, las curvas generadas fueron ajustadas a los modelos de crecimiento de Gompertz y Boltzman. Usando la técnica de EIE, la impedancia del medio resultó el parámetro más eficiente para la estimación del pico máximo exponencial de crecimiento de L. casei. Se demostró que la EIE constituye una alternativa para la detección rápida de la concentración microbiana en procesos de producción de biomasa para la elaboración de productos alimenticios probióticos.


ABSTRACT The application of electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a technique used to monitor, detect and quantify microorganisms of biotechnological interest, with the measurement of electrical parameters of rapid response of a medium inoculated at temperature and constant agitation by submerged electrodes. By making a comparison of the growth model and the plate count with the electrical response parameters, a correlation can be made to break the technological barrier between classical microbiology and rapid detection methods. The comparison of both techniques was performed to determine the maximum growth of Lactobacillus casei (L. casei) ATCC 393. It was found that after inoculation, after 24 h under microaerophilic conditions (37 °C), the maximum microbial growth was recorded by medium of the EIE, using the parameters -Z- (29,1057) and Deg-Deg0 (24,555°). In contrast to the plate count technique, maximum growth was estimated at 9 h. The experimental data obtained through the EIE were adjusted by a series RC circuit; later, the generated curves were adjusted to the growth models of Gompertz and Boltzman. Using the EIE technique, the impedance of the medium was the most efficient parameter for the estimation of the maximum exponential growth peak of L. casei. It was demonstrated that the EIE constitutes an alternative for the rapid detection of the microbial concentration in biomass production processes for the elaboration of probiotic food products.

One of the most fundamental questions in the field of neuroscience is the emergence of synchronous behaviour in the brain, such as phase, anti-phase, and shift-phase synchronisation. In this work, we investigate how the connectivity between brain areas can influence the phase angle and the neuronal synchronisation. To do this, we consider brain areas connected by means of excitatory and inhibitory synapses, in which the neuron dynamics is given by the adaptive exponential integrate-and-fire model. Our simulations suggest that excitatory and inhibitory connections from one area to another play a crucial role in the emergence of these types of synchronisation. Thus, in the case of unidirectional interaction, we observe that the phase angles of the neurons in the receiver area depend on the excitatory and inhibitory synapses which arrive from the sender area. Moreover, when the neurons in the sender area are synchronised, the phase angle variability of the receiver area can be reduced for some conductance values between the areas. For bidirectional interactions, we find that phase and anti-phase synchronisation can emerge due to excitatory and inhibitory connections. We also verify, for a strong inhibitory-to-excitatory interaction, the existence of silent neuronal activities, namely a large number of excitatory neurons that remain in silence for a long time.

From a physical/dynamical system perspective, the potential well represents the proportional mass of points that escape the neighbourhood of a given point. In the last 20 years, several works have shown the importance of this quantity to obtain precise approximations for several recurrence time distributions in mixing stochastic processes and dynamical systems. Besides providing a review of the different scaling factors used in the literature in recurrence times, the present work contributes two new results: (1) For ϕ-mixing and ψ-mixing processes, we give a new exponential approximation for hitting and return times using the potential well as the scaling parameter. ABSTRACT

In longitudinal studies, repeated measures are collected over time and hence they tend to be serially correlated. These studies are commonly analyzed using linear mixed models (LMMs), and in this article we consider an extension of the skew-normal/independent LMM, where the error term has a dependence structure, such as damped exponential correlation or autoregressive correlation of order p. The proposed model provides flexibility in capturing the effects of skewness and heavy tails simultaneously when continuous repeated measures are serially correlated. For this robust model, we present an efficient EM-type algorithm for parameters estimation via maximum likelihood and the observed information matrix is derived analytically to account for standard errors. The methodology is illustrated through an application to schizophrenia data and some simulation studies. The proposed algorithm and methods are implemented in the new R package skewlmm.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to develop prediction equations for the body weight of Pelibuey ewes from body measurements comparing linear vs nonlinear models. A subsample of 197 ewes was scored for body weight (BW), rump length (RL), rump width (RW), height at withers (HW), chest girth (CG), chest width (CW), chest depth (CD), cannon bone perimeter (CP), and body length (BL). Pearson's correlation analysis was performed on a sub-data set from 197 ewes to estimate the relationship between body weight and body measurements. Multiple linear regressions were fitted to obtain prediction equations of body weight from the eight body measurements, and prediction equations were obtained from the body measurement that showed the highest correlation with body weight using five nonlinear models allometric, saturation growth, exponential, and incomplete gamma. Data from an independent subsample of 196 ewes was used to validate the equation with the best goodness of fit using linear regression analysis. CG was the body measurement that showed the highest correlation with BW, and based on multiple stepwise regression, in the equation BW = - 60.622 + 1.233CG explained 79% of the body weight variation. Moreover, BW prediction was more accurate when other measurements such CW, BL, and RW were added to the model generating to the equation BW = - 68.875 + 0.845CG + 0.866CW + 0.195BL + 0.601RW (R2 = 0.85, MSE = 15.51). In the case of nonlinear models, incomplete gamma and exponential models generated the equations with the best goodness of fit and precision: BW = 0.077CG1.108exp(0.016CG) (R2 = 0.82, MSE = 18.64) and BW = 3.5759exp(0.0292CG) (R2 = 0.82, MSE = 18.65) respectively.

ABSTRACT

We define the odd log-logistic exponential Gaussian regression with two systematic components, which extends the heteroscedastic Gaussian regression and it is suitable for bimodal data quite common in the agriculture area. We estimate the parameters by the method of maximum likelihood. Some simulations indicate that the maximum-likelihood estimators are accurate. The model assumptions are checked through case deletion and quantile residuals. The usefulness of the new regression model is illustrated by means of three real data sets in different areas of agriculture, where the data present bimodality.
