ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The digital transformation in health care requires training nursing and health professionals in the digitally competent use of digital assistive technologies (DAT). The continuing education training "Beratende für digitale Gesundheitsversorgung" ("Consultant for Digital Healthcare") was developed to fill this gap. The effectiveness of the training program will be assessed in this study. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective is to record and measure the participants' learning success. We will assess whether the previously defined teaching intentions, learning objectives, competencies, and participants' expectations have been achieved and whether a transfer of learning occurred. The secondary objective is participant satisfaction and feasibility of the training. The tertiary objective is the successful transfer of DAT by participants in their institutions. METHODS: Approximately 65 nursing and health care professionals will participate in the pilot phase of the further training and evaluation process, which is planned in a mixed methods design in a nonsequential manner. The different methods will be combined in the interpretation of the results to achieve a synaptic view of the training program. We plan to conduct pre-post surveys in the form of participant self-assessments about dealing with DAT and content-related knowledge levels. Exploratory individual interviews will also be conducted to build theory, to examine whether and to what extent competence (cognition) has increased, and whether dealing (affect) with DAT has changed. Furthermore, an interim evaluation within the framework of the Teaching Analysis Poll (TAP) will occur. The knowledge thereby gained will be used to revise and adapt the modules for future courses. To assess the transfer success, the participants create a practical project, which is carried out within the training framework, observed by the lecturers, and subsequently evaluated and adapted. RESULTS: We expect that the learning objectives for the continuing education training will be met. The attendees are expected to increase their level of digital competence in different skills areas: (1) theoretical knowledge, (2) hands-on skills for planning the application and practical use of DAT, (3) reflective skills and applying ethical and legal considerations in their use, (4) applying all that in a structured process of technology implementation within their practical sphere of work. CONCLUSIONS: The aim of this study and appropriate further training program are to educate nursing and health care professionals in the use of DAT, thereby empowering them for a structured change process toward digitally aided care. This focus gives rise to the following research questions: First, how should further training programs be developed, and which focus is appropriate for addressee-appropriate learning goals, course structure, and general curriculum? Second, how should a training program with this specific content and area be evaluated? Third, what are the conditions to offer a continued program? ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Surgical further training faces the challenging task of reconciling technological advancements and patient safety, particularly in the context of the planned hospital reform. Additionally, the generation shift and evolving expectations of Generations Y and Z in the workplace present further challenges. In response to these demands, the Berlin-Brandenburg Surgical Society (Berlin-Brandenburgische Chirurgische Gesellschaft, BCG) initiated a structured discussion and developed a position paper during the Neuhardenberg talks (Neuhardenberger Gespräche). METHODOLOGY: Within the framework of the Neuhardenberg talks, four sessions with keynote presentations and discussions took place. Based on the main discussion points, theses and positions were subsequently formulated and digitally voted on. RESULTS: The results reveal a clear consensus favoring flexible working hours models, earlier specialization options and the integration of external rotations in surgical further training. Regarding talent acquisition and early recruitment of residents, there was a clear consensus supporting the promotion of employee engagement and structured early recruitment of students. There was unanimous agreement on the introduction of training associations as an effective means to ensure high-quality surgical further training. DISCUSSION: One of the central points in the discussions was that high-quality surgical further training will only be achievable within training associations, especially given the impending hospital reform. The BCG plans to develop a modular further training association to make surgical further training in Berlin/Brandenburg fit for the future.

ABSTRACT

Political and scientific discourses repeatedly emphasize the importance of lifelong learning in today's knowledge societies. At the same time, participation in vocational further education (VFE) is still socially stratified: mainly those adults profit who already bring with them better qualifications and more resources. The Corona pandemic has profoundly changed the supply with and the demand for further education in a short period of time, and it is not yet clear-and empirically not sufficiently investigated-how the pandemic has affected participation in VFE and what barriers and opportunities the crisis has brought for different groups of employees. We answer these questions empirically using data from NEPS Start Cohort 6 for a sample of adults, who participated in the NEPS surveys before and during the Corona crisis and were employed shortly before the outbreak of the pandemic. Our results show that the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany was associated with a moderate decline in participation in job-related courses and face-to-face events. The social, occupational, and workplace differences in these forms of participation, which were pronounced before the pandemic, also declined slightly in the wake of the crisis. We conclude that the pandemic has led to a decrease of social inequality of adult education, at least in its first and second wave.

ABSTRACT

During the global COVID pandemic, the importance of professionals in the health care sector has been put in a new light, including pharmacists. In this context, the focus is also on how pharmacists are trained in different countries. Through an exchange of pharmacy teaching staff from a German to a Vietnamese university, the pharmacy education programs in both countries were compared. Aspects such as access to studies, structure of studies, and further training opportunities were considered. Differences and similarities emerged. In both countries, students first acquire basic knowledge and then delve deeper into pharmaceutical content in main studies. There is, expectedly, a great overlap in the content of the courses. Overall, the education at Vietnamese universities seems to be more practice-oriented due to a large number of placements. This also allows a specialization, which can be pursued in Germany with self-interest after graduation. There, the preparation for everyday work in the community pharmacy is separated from the university by a mandatory practical year. For the future, efforts are being made in both countries to strengthen the importance of clinical pharmacy in the curriculum. To this end, the Vietnamese are taking their inspiration from abroad in many cases, including Germany.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study compares Canadian and German healthcare workers employment status and wages based on age, gender, and educational training. The German and Canadian healthcare systems are rarely compared, that if such a comparison between the two countries is available, can provide an insight of health workers employment status and how that might affect the wellbeing of elderly. OBJECTIVES: The study investigates the relation of age, gender and post-basic training with annual employment and income of health care workers in Canada and Germany. METHODS: Secondary data on age, gender, post-basic education training, employment status and average monthly wages/salary was obtained from the German Socioeconomic Panel and the Canadian Survey of Labor and Income Dynamics data. The German dataset comprised 571 healthcare workers, including 219 nurses, 231 elder carers and 121 care assistants. The Canadian dataset comprised 2,580 healthcare workers, including 947 nurses, 493 elder carers and 1,140 care assistants. RESULTS: Primarily, there was a strong relationship between post-basic training and wages for both the Canadian and German samples among elder carers and care assistants. Older healthcare workers (46 years old and above) were generally employed, and age had no predictive power on annual labor earnings. This difference in age was significant among the Canadian than the German nurses. Post-basic training had a significant relation with annual earnings and monthly wages in both the Canadian and German samples. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that the socio-demographics of healthcare workers as age, gender and advanced training are associated with their employment opportunities, financial rewards, and better career opportunities. The relationship between demographic variables helps understand the relation of healthcare workers employment dispositions and how it might improve the quality of life of older people in nursing homes, hospitals and elderly private homes in Canada and Germany.

ABSTRACT

The new M WBO (Musterweiterbildungsordnung) has been developed for 6 years and will be put into force by most LÄK (Landesärztekammern) on 01.07.2020. Future training to become a dermatologist is competency-based. This is to enable observable, successful problem solving in practice. Thus, the acquisition of competence is only dependent on whether the goal has been achieved. New procedures are required to determine achievement of the respective competencies, including annual continuing education interviews, workplace-based examinations, and an eLogbuch (electronic logbook). Minimum inpatient periods will be eliminated in the future. In principle, continuing education can take place entirely on an outpatient basis. The M WBO Dermatology comprises 14 thematic blocks with differentiated description of cognitive and methodological or action competencies. The guideline numbers of dermatological additional training courses have been shifted considerably into the period of basic training. Additional training courses can be acquired while working. Fachlich empfohlene Weiterbildungspläne (FEWP) are the concrete implementation regulations of the M WBO. They are not part of the WBO and can be adapted. In connection with this new approach, numerous questions are currently still open, such as documentation in practice or financing.

ABSTRACT

The notion of lifelong learning is gaining importance, not only in the labor market but also in other areas of modern societies. Previous research finds variation in occupation-related training participation by worker and workplace characteristics, gender, and education. However, evidence on the individual's socio-emotional skills creating favorable conditions for overall further training is scarce. To close this research gap, we analyze the role of personality for further training participation. First, we compare how the Big Five Personality Dimensions relate to different training types by differentiating between non-formal and informal training measures. Second, we investigate how personality traits affect further training chosen for occupational and private reasons separately. Drawing on a sample of 10,559 individuals from the Adult Stage of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), we find that throughout our estimations, openness to experience positively relates to further training participation and is the most important determinant among the Big Five Personality Dimensions. However, the relationship between personality traits and training participation varies according to the training type and the reason for participating in further training. Moreover, we find gender-specific differences in the association between personality traits and lifelong learning. We conclude that personality is an important predictor of lifelong learning decisions.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Although in recent times more research has been done on interactions of metallic dental objects in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiologists are often uncertain whether the objects should be removed or can be retained prior to an impending examination. On the one hand, they want to avoid unnecessary material removal which is associated with costs and potential damage of the dental object. On the other hand, they fear material-induced susceptibility artefacts will impair the diagnostic workup so that examinations will have to be repeated. The lack of information complicates adequate decision making for radiologists. AIM: The aim of this survey was to evaluate the information that is currently available to radiologists regarding orthodontic appliances of the head and neck region in the MRI and determine how to handle these situations in a radiologist's every day routine. Therefore, this study can reveal the need for further research. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The questionnaire was published in the 9/2017 issue of the journal Der Radiologe and sent as an electronic version by the BDR (Professional Association of German Radiologists) to their approximately 1800 members. In addition, the radiological institutes of 55 German university and maximum care clinics were contacted. RESULTS: In all, 74 evaluable responses were received within a period of 16 weeks, representing a response rate of 3.7%. Altogether, the participants rate the risks of a detachment or heating of orthodontic appliances as too high. The interviewed radiologists categorize the available data as insufficient and they almost unanimously (97.3%) demand a declaration requirement for the manufacturers. There is a clear need for further education (78.3%). Intraoral measurement of the magnetic permeability is considered as a useful tool to determine possible interactions with the MRI by 40.5%.

ABSTRACT

The current version of the urology training program will concentrate on the mediation of competences and skills in various fields of action for outpatient urology instead of persisting on the minimum and reference numbers of surgical and diagnostic procedures. However, the following fields of action must be fulfilled: microbiology, andrology and systemic cancer therapy. There is justifiable concern that various institutions will lose their permission for a complete 5year residency program based on the above-mentioned demands since not all institutions have all subspecialties in urology. Those institutions need to define new ways of residency training such as interdisciplinary programs within their own institution between disciplines like pediatric surgery, gynecology and medical oncology. Other options are combined training programs between regional urology departments with different main focuses or training programs between institutions and urologists in private practice. There is an unmet need to improve residency training as well as board examinations by new structures and a reliable curriculum. Based on the changed main focuses of the new version of urology training, we need to discuss the future of residency programs. It might be helpful to discuss two different types of urology training with a common trunk for the first three years followed by a more outpatient-based residency training for the general urologist and a more specialized training for the inpatient urologist to be educated in complex treatment modalities. An open mind to broadening our own horizon, respectful discussion with other departments and the development of common, reliable and interdisciplinary contents represent indispensable prerequisites to realize such an innovative future training program.

ABSTRACT

Demographic change has increased the need for elderly care. Training unemployed workers might be one way to increase the supply of elderly care nurses. This study analyzes the effectiveness of subsidized training for unemployed individuals in the elderly care professions in Germany over 11.5 years. We find that short further training and long retraining courses significantly increase workers' long-term employment. As approximately 25% to 50% of trained nurses have permanent jobs in the care sector, we estimate that approximately 5% of all employed nurses are formerly trained unemployed workers.

ABSTRACT

Background: In the guidelines issued by the Robert Koch Institute, the training and establishing of infection control link nurses (HYG-PFLEGs) as multipliers is stipulated in order to propagate the acceptance and implementation of recommended hygiene measures. To date, there is no standardized format for the further education of these nurses in Germany. Aim: To develop a modular curriculum for HYG-PFLEGs to be trained by infection control nurses. Method: Ward managers (n = 15) and infection control nurses (n = 14) from different hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia were interviewed about the specific requirements for curricula for infection control link nurses. Four focus group interviews were carried out between October 2012 and January 2013. The tape recordings were transcribed and analysed according to Mayring's content analysis. Results: HYG-PFLEGs were regarded as an indispensable entity for controlling the flow of information between the wards and hygiene teams in hospitals. A core curriculum adjustable for differing institutions should contain a high share of hygiene-related contents, pedagogical-didactical, and psychological competencies as well as practical forms of education. Conclusions: Within the context of the implementation of complex interventions these results provide a basis for the development and implementation of a modular curriculum for infection control link nurses.

ABSTRACT

The development of creativity in the training of professionals Background: The specialized literature increasingly reflects the social demand existing at the world level of professionals with a higher development of their abilities as regards creativity, communication, motivation, group work, leadership and management, among others. For this reason, the number of sociopsychological trainings conducted as a modality of professional self-improvement has been increased since the 1980s. Objectives: To make a general synthesis of the concept of "sociopsychological training" as well as to show the results of its application in several enterprises of the Ministry of the Iron and Steel Industry (SIME, in Spanish). Results: It was confirmed that the sociopsychological training on creativity develops the creative attitude of its participants, increase the resistance to the closedown and the originality of those taking part in the training course.
