ABSTRACT

The microwave and millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging technology is gaining increasing interest for food inspection. It allows for noninvasive, contactless, and fast scanning capabilities, while being cost-efficient and safe to human. This review paper introduces the fundamentals in the interaction of electromagnetic wave with food materials and the current MMW sensing and imaging systems used for foods. Then we present emerging technologies in MMW imaging for inspecting food quality and safety, aiming to meet the modern food industry's demand. According to the most recent technological advancements, it is expected that high-performance antenna, ultrawide bandwidth signal generation, nano-scale semiconductor technologies, radio frequency identification with inductance-capacitance resonator, and machine learning could significantly enhance the capabilities of MMW imaging systems for food inspection.

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in major disruptions to the food service industry and regulatory food inspections. The objective of this study was to conduct an interrupted time series analysis to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food safety inspection trends in Toronto, Canada. Inspection data for restaurants and take-out establishments were obtained from 2017 to 2022 and summarized as weekly counts of inspections, pass ratings, and total infractions. Bayesian segmented regression was conducted to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on weekly infraction and inspection pass rates. On average, a 0.31-point lower weekly infraction rate (95% credible interval [CI]: 0.23, 0.40) and a 2.0% higher probability of passing inspections (95% CI: 1.1%, 3.0%) were predicted in the pandemic period compared to prepandemic. Models predicted lower infraction rates and higher pass rates immediately following the pandemic, with additional variability compared to the prepandemic period, that were regressing back toward pre-pandemic levels in 2022. Seasonal effects were also identified, with infraction rates highest in April and pass rates lowest in August. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an initial positive effect on food safety outcomes in restaurants and take-out food establishments in Toronto, but this effect appears to be temporary. This finding could be due to the beneficial impact of COVID-19 protection measures in these establishments or other factors such as less volume of customers. Additional research is needed to investigate causes of the identified differences as well as seasonal and long-term inspection trends postpandemic. Results can inform future food safety inspection planning, outreach, and pandemic preparedness.

ABSTRACT

A self-developed portable electronic nose and its classification model were designed to detect and differentiate minor mechanical damage to strawberries. The electronic nose utilises four metal oxide sensors and four electrochemical sensors specifically calibrated for strawberry detection. The selected strawberries were subjected to simulated damage using an H2Q-C air bath oscillator at varying speeds and then stored at 4°C to mimic real-life mechanical damage scenarios. Multiple feature extraction methods have been proposed and combined with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) dimensionality reduction for comparative modelling. Following validation with various models such as SVM, KNN, LDA, naive Bayes, and subspace ensemble, the Grid Search-optimised SVM (GS-SVM) method achieved the highest classification accuracy of 0.84 for assessing the degree of strawberry damage. Additionally, the Feature Extraction ensemble classifier achieved the highest classification accuracy (0.89 in determining the time interval of strawberry damage). This experiment demonstrated the feasibility of the self-developed electronic nose for detecting minor mechanical damage in strawberries.

ABSTRACT

Accurate species identification, especially in the fishery sector, is critical for ensuring food safety, consumer protection and to prevent economic losses. In this study, a total of 93 individual frozen-thawed cuttlefish samples from four different species (S. officinalis, S. bertheloti, S. aculeata, and Sepiella inermis) were collected from two wholesale fish plants in Chioggia, Italy. Species identification was carried out by inspection through morphological features using dichotomic keys and then through near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) measurements. The NIRS data were collected using a handled-portable spectrophotometer, and the spectral range scanned was from 900-1680 nm. The collected spectra were processed using principal component analysis for unsupervised analysis and a support vector machine for supervised analysis to evaluate the species identification capability. The results showed that NIRS classification had a high overall accuracy of 93% in identifying the cuttlefish species. This finding highlights the robustness and effectiveness of spectral analysis as a tool for species identification, even in complex spatial contexts. The findings emphasize the potential of NIRS as a valuable tool in the field of fishery product authentication, offering a rapid and eco-friendly approach to species identification in the post-processing stages.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Food inspection covers a broad range of topics, including nutrient analysis, food pollutants, food auxiliary materials, additives, and food sensory identification. The foundation of diverse subjects like food science, nutrition, health research, and the food industry, as well as the desired reference for drafting trade and food legislation, makes food inspection highly significant. Because of their high efficiency, sensitivity, and accuracy, instrumental analysis methods have gradually replaced conventional analytical methods as the primary means of food hygiene inspection. SCOPE AND APPROACH: Metabolomics-based analysis technology, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (CE-MS), has become a widely used analytics platform. This research provides a bird's eye view of the application and future of metabolomics-related technologies in food inspection. KEY FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS: We have provided a summary of the features and the application range of various metabolomics techniques, the strengths and weaknesses of different metabolomics platforms, and their implementation in specific inspection procedures. These procedures encompass the identification of endogenous metabolites, the detection of exogenous toxins and food additives, analysis of metabolite alterations during processing and storage, as well as the recognition of food adulteration. Despite the widespread utilization and significant contributions of metabolomics-based food inspection technologies, numerous challenges persist as the food industry advances and technology continues to improve. Thus, we anticipate addressing these potential issues in the future.

ABSTRACT

Identificar irregularidades em restaurantes pode auxiliar a minimizar riscos de contaminação. O objetivo desse estudo foi analisar as irregularidades registradas em inspeções sanitárias de restaurantes e similares em Curitiba, Brasil, entre 2005 a 2017. A descrição das irregularidades foi organizada seguindo as categorias e os itens da legislação de Boas Práticas (BP) para serviços de alimentação do Brasil e as cinco chaves para uma alimentação mais segura, definidas pela Organização Mundial da Saúde. Do total de 4.098 registros, houve a descrição de 8.327 irregularidades. Em relação às BP, houve a prevalência da descrição de irregularidades nos anos de 2005, 2006 e 2013, e das categorias: edificações, instalações, equipamentos, móveis e utensílios (42,80%); preparação do alimento (11,54%); documentação e registro (9,92%) e matéria-prima, ingredientes e embalagens (9,06%). Em relação às cinco chaves para uma alimentação mais segura, apenas 3.209 (38,53%) descrições correspondiam a esse tema, com destaque a: manter a limpeza (40,70%) e usar água e matérias-primas seguras (34,71%). Houve uma tendência decrescente na descrição das irregularidades no período estudado, porém ainda é um desafio implementar as BP em restaurantes e similares no Brasil, o que pode favorecer a ocorrência de doenças e aumentar o risco à saúde da população.


Identifying irregularities in restaurants can help minimize contamination risks. The objective of this study was to analyze the irregularities recorded in sanitary inspections of restaurants and similar establishments in Curitiba, Brazil, between 2005 and 2017. The description of the irregularities was categorized following the items and criteria outlined in the Good Practices (GP) legislation for food services of Brazil and the Five Keys to Safer Food, defined by the World Health Organization. Out of the total of 4,098 records, 8,327 irregularities were documented. Concerning GP, there was a prevalence of irregularities described in the years 2005, 2006 and 2013, mainly in the following categories: buildings, installations, equipment, furniture and utensils (42.80%); food preparation (11.54%); documentation and registration (9.92%) and raw materials, ingredients and packaging (9.06%). Regarding the Five Keys to Safer Food, only 3,209 (38.53%) corresponded to this theme, with particular emphasis on maintaining cleanliness (40.70%) and using safe water and raw materials (34.71 %). The study observed a declining trend in the description of irregularities over the study period. However, the successful implementation of GP in restaurants and similar establishments in Brazil remains a challenge, potentially favoring the occurrence of foodborne diseases and increasing the risk to public health.

ABSTRACT

Staphylococcal enterotoxin C (SEC) is an enterotoxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause intestinal diseases. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a sensitive detection method for SEC to ensure food safety and prevent foodborne diseases in humans. A field-effect transistor (FET) based on high-purity carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was used as a transducer, and a nucleic acid aptamer with high affinity was used for recognition to capture the target. The results indicated that the biosensor achieved an ultra-low theoretical detection limit of 1.25 fg/mL in PBS, and its good specificity was verified by detecting target analogs. Three typical food homogenates were used as the solution to be measured to verify that the biosensor had a swift response time (within 5 min after sample addition). An additional study with a more significant basa fish sample response also showed excellent sensitivity (theoretical detection limit of 8.15 fg/mL) and a stable detection ratio. In summary, this CNT-FET biosensor enabled the label-free, ultra-sensitive, and fast detection of SEC in complex samples. The FET biosensors could be further used as a universal biosensor platform for the ultrasensitive detection of multiple biological toxic pollutants, thus considerably stopping the spread of harmful substances.

ABSTRACT

Microwave imaging has been recently proposed as alternative technology for in-line inspection of packaged products in the food industry, thanks to its non-invasiveness and the low-cost of the equipment. In this framework, simple and effective detection/imaging strategies, able to reveal the presence of foreign bodies that may have contaminated the product during the packaging stage, are needed to allow real-time and reliable detection, thus avoiding delays along the production line and limiting occurrence of false detections (either negative or positive). In this work, a novel detection/imaging approach meeting these requirements is presented. The approach performs the detection/imaging of the contaminant by exploiting the symmetries usually characterizing the food items. Such symmetries are broken by the presence of foreign bodies, thereby determining a differential signal that can be processed to reveal their presence. In so doing, the approach does not require the prior measurement of a reference, defect-free, item. With respect to the quite common case of homogeneous food packaged in circular plastic/glass jars, numerical analyses are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Official food control is intended to ensure food safety in the food business. In Finland, inspections of food service are performed using a 4-point risk-based grading system. This study compared routine inspection results of outbreak and nonoutbreak establishments in restaurants and institutional catering to investigate whether certain inspection results were associated with the occurrence of foodborne outbreaks. Also a more specific sample of outbreak establishments was defined using strength of evidence registered for each outbreak. Grade distributions of specific inspected items were compared separately. No significant differences were seen in restaurants but in institutional catering significantly poorer inspection results (p < 0.05) were detected in items concerning the order and cleanliness of facilities, surfaces and equipment in outbreak establishments. Effective correction of noncompliances in cleanliness of the food handling environment and equipment and constant maintenance of a favourable situation is essential in ensuring a high level of consumer safety in food service.

ABSTRACT

In the food industry, there is a growing demand for cost-effective methods for the inline inspection of food items able to non-invasively detect small foreign bodies that may have contaminated the product during the production process. Microwave imaging may be a valid alternative to the existing technologies, thanks to its inherently low-cost and its capability of sensing low-density contaminants. In this paper, a simple microwave imaging system specifically designed to enable the inspection of a large variety of food products is presented. The system consists of two circularly loaded antipodal Vivaldi antennas with a very large operative band, from 1 to 15 GHz, thus allowing a suitable spatial resolution for different food products, from mostly fatty to high water-content foods. The antennas are arranged in such a way as to collect a signal that can be used to exploit a recently proposed real-time microwave imaging strategy, leveraging the inherent symmetries that usually characterize food items. The system is experimentally characterized, and the achieved results compare favorably with the design specifications and numerical simulations. Relying on these positive results, the first experimental proof of the effectiveness of the entire system is presented confirming its efficacy.

ABSTRACT

Reliable methods are always greatly desired for the practice of food inspection. Currently, most food inspection techniques are mainly dependent on the identification of special components, which neglect the combination effects of different components and often lead to biased results. By using Chinese liquors as an example, we developed a new food identification method based on the combination of machine learning with GC × GC/TOF-MS. The sample preparation methods SPME and LLE were compared and optimized for producing repeatable and high-quality data. Then, two machine learning algorithms were tried, and the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm was finally chosen for its better performance. It is shown that the method performs well in identifying both the geographical origins and flavor types of Chinese liquors, with high accuracies of 91.86% and 97.67%, respectively. It is also reasonable to propose that combining machine learning with advanced chromatography could be used for other foods with complex components.

ABSTRACT

(1) Background: Several agencies in the United States play a primary role in ensuring food safety, yet foodborne illnesses result in about 3000 deaths and cost more than USD 15.6 billion each year. The study objectives included analyzing local health departments' (LHDs) level of engagement in food safety and other related services, and LHDs' characteristics associated with those services. (2) Methods: We used data from 1496 LHDs that participated in the 2019 National Profile of Local Health Departments Survey, administered to all 2459 LHDs in the United States. Logistic regression analyses were performed to model multiple dichotomous variables. (3) Results: An estimated 78.9% of LHDs performed food safety inspections, 78.3% provided food safety education, 40.7% provided food processing inspections, and 48.4% engaged in policy and advocacy. The odds for LHDs to directly provide preventive nutrition services were 20 times higher if the LHDs had one or more nutritionists on staff (Adjusted Odds Ratio or AOR = 20.0; Confidence Interval, CI = 12.4−32.2) compared with LHDs with no nutritionists. Other LHD characteristics significantly associated with the provision of nutrition services (p < 0.05) included population size, state governance (rather than local), and LHD having at least one registered, licensed, practical, or vocational nurse. The odds of providing food processing services were lower for locally governed than state-governed LHDs (AOR = 0.5; CI = 0.4−0.7). The odds of performing food safety inspections varied by LHD's population size, whether a nutritionist was on staff, whether it was state-governed (vs. locally), and whether it completed a community health assessment (CHA) within 5 years. (4) Conclusions: LHDs play a critical role in ensuring safe food for Americans, yet variations exist in their performance based on their specific characteristics. Adequate funding and a competent workforce are essential for LHDs to utilize evidence-based practices and engage in policymaking and advocacy concerning food safety.

Introdução: Roedores estão entre as mais importantes pragas do mundo e, quando estes indivíduos ou seus pelos são encontrados nos alimentos, são considerados matérias estranhas indicativas de risco à saúde. Por outro lado, a presença de pelos humanos e dos demais mamíferos é considerada indicativa de falhas das boas práticas. Sendo assim, a caracterização dos pelos dos roedores sinantrópicos e a diferenciação dos pelos das demais espécies de mamíferos mostram-se relevantes e necessárias. Objetivo: Caracterizar os padrões microestruturais dos pelos-guarda das três principais espécies de roedores que infestam ambientes de armazenamento de alimentos e apresentar uma proposta de protocolo para análise tricológica de pelos isolados. Método: Amostras de pelos de roedores das espécies Mus musculus, Rattus rattus e Rattus norvegicus foram coletadas de espécimes colecionados e pelos-guarda íntegros foram selecionados para a preparação de lâminas para observação da microestrutura. No total, 20 pelos-guarda foram analisados para caracterização dos padrões medulares e 91 impressões cuticulares de pelos-guarda foram examinadas para caracterização de padrões cuticulares. Resultados: Observou-se que M. musculus apresentou medula alveolar e cutícula losângica com variações na forma e tamanho das escamas. R. rattus e R. norvegicus apresentaram medula reticulada e cutícula losângica, também com variações. Um protocolo com fluxograma de identificação foi apresentado para a análise dos pelos estudados. Conclusões: Os pelos das espécies de roedores sinantrópicos estudados podem ser diferenciados das demais espécies de mamíferos de interesse sanitário pela presença dos padrões medulares alveolar e reticulado no escudo de pelos-guarda. Para as espécies estudadas, somente o padrão medular do escudo dos pelos-guarda confere caráter diagnóstico.


Introduction: Rodents are among the most important pests in the world and when these individuals or their fur are found in food, they are considered foreign matter indicative of health risk. On the other hand, the presence of human and other mammalian hair is considered indicative of failures in good practices. Thus, the characterization of the hair of synanthropic rodents and its differentiation from other mammal species are relevant and necessary. Objective: To characterize the microstructural patterns of guard hairs of the three main species of rodents that infest food storage environments and to present a proposal for a protocol for the trichological analysis of isolated hairs. Method: Hair samples were plucked from collected specimens of the rodent species Mus musculus, Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus. Intact guard hairs were selected for the preparation of slides for observation of the  microstructure. In total, 20 guard hairs were analyzed for the characterization of medullary patterns and 91 guard hair cuticular impressions were examined for the characterization of cuticular patterns. Results: It was observed that M. musculus presented alveolar medulla and losangic cuticle with variations in the shape and size of the scales. R. rattus and R. norvegicus presented reticulated medulla and losangic cuticle, also with variations. A protocol with an identification fluxogram was presented for the analysis of the studied hairs. Conclusions: The hairs of the studied synanthropic rodent species can be differentiated from other mammalian species of health interest by the presence of alveolar and reticulated medullary patterns in the guard hair shield. For the studied species, only the medullary pattern of the guard hair shield confers a diagnostic character.

O presente trabalho tem como proposta avaliar os riscos e possíveis irregularidades nas padarias do município de Itabela-BA que podem interferir de forma direta ou indireta na saúde da população e mostrar a importância da Vigilância Sanitária municipal para o processo de inspeção e orientação desses estabelecimentos. O estudo foi realizado por meio de uma pesquisa documental na Vigilância Sanitária no município de Itabela/BA. Foi realizado um levantamento de documentos do ano de 2015, que foram analisados criticamente. Constatou-se que as padarias pesquisadas apresentam um déficit em relação à higiene e segurança no processo de manipulação de alimentos, sendo que a presença da Vigilância Sanitária realizando um acompanhamento e orientação dos proprietários e funcionários das padarias é de fundamental importância para oferecer à sociedade Itabelense alimentos adequados para a venda e o consumo


The present study has the proposal to evaluate the risks and possible irregularities in the bakeries of Itabela-BA that can directly or indirectly interfere in the health of the population and demonstrate the importance of municipal Sanitary Surveillance for the inspection and guidance process of these establishments. The study was conducted through a documentary research, carried out at the Sanitary Surveillance in the city of Itabela/BA. A survey of documents was carried out in the year 2015, which was analyzed critically. It was found that the bakeries surveyed have a deficit in relation to hygiene and safety in the food handling process. The presence of the Health Surveillance monitoring and guiding bakery owners and employees is of fundamental importance to offer the Itabelense society suitable products for the sale and consumption

ABSTRACT

In the inspection work involving foodstuffs in food factories, there are cases where people not only visually inspect foodstuffs, but must also physically touch foodstuffs with their hands to find foreign or undesirable objects mixed in the product. To contribute to the automation of the inspection process, this paper proposes a method for detecting foreign objects in food based on differences in hardness using a camera-based tactile image sensor. Because the foreign objects to be detected are often small, the tactile sensor requires a high spatial resolution. In addition, inspection work in food factories requires a sufficient inspection speed. The proposed cylindrical tactile image sensor meets these requirements because it can efficiently acquire high-resolution tactile images with a camera mounted inside while rolling the cylindrical sensor surface over the target object. By analyzing the images obtained from the tactile image sensor, we detected the presence of foreign objects and their locations. By using a reflective membrane-type sensor surface with high sensitivity, small and hard foreign bodies of sub-millimeter size mixed in with soft food were successfully detected. The effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed through experiments to detect shell fragments left on the surface of raw shrimp and bones left in fish fillets.

INTRODUCTION: the health extension service is a package that aims to improve primary healthcare services, mainly in rural areas through an innovative community-based approach that focuses on prevention, healthy living, and basic curative care which is implemented by the health extension workers using the health post as a center of care. Thus, this study aimed to explore the barriers of health extension service utilization in East Gojjam Zone, North West, Ethiopia. METHODS: qualitative study was conducted from Feb 16 to May 30, 2021, on the barriers to health extension service utilization among households in East Gojjam Zone. The data was collected with focus group discussion and in-depth interviews to address our objective. Study participants were selected purposively until the required data was saturated. The data was analyzed under selected themes based on the guide and summarized manually. RESULTS: respondents reported that there were lots of reasons that preclude proper utilization of the health extension packages both in urban and rural households in East Gojjam Zone-like negligence, previous experience, misinterpretation of the health extension packages, the religion they believe, unavailability of water continuously, wrongly utilization of the packages rather than their purpose and the environment they live. CONCLUSION: there are still lots of barriers regarding health extension package utilization in the East Gojjam Zone. Working on households on purpose and utilization of health extension packages in a religiously and culturally acceptable manner is advisable. Further research on reported barriers is needed.

The rapid development of nanomaterials has provided a good theoretical basis and technical support to solve the problems of food safety inspection. The combination of functionalized composite nanomaterials and well-known detection methods is gradually applied to detect hazardous substances, such as chemical residues and toxins, in agricultural food products. This review concentrates on the latest agro-food safety inspection techniques and methodologies constructed with the assistance of new hybrid micro/nanoentities, such as molecular imprinting polymers integrated with quantum dots (MIPs@QDs), molecular imprinting polymers integrated with upconversion luminescent nanoparticles (MIPs@UCNPs), upconversion luminescent nanoparticles combined with metal-organic frameworks (UCNPs@MOFs), magnetic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs@Fe3O4), magnetic covalent-organic frameworks (Fe3O4@COFs), covalent-organic frameworks doped with quantum dots (COFs@QDs), nanobody-involved immunoassay for fast inspection, etc. The presented summary and discussion favor a relevant outlook for further integrating various disciplines, like material science, nanotechnology, and analytical methodology, for addressing new challenges that emerge in agro-food research fields.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The application of optical sensing technology in food adulteration detection has been extensively studied. However, due to the impact of packaging materials on the penetration depth of photons in foods and the interference from the optical properties of the packaging materials themselves, the use of optical sensing technology to detect packaged foods adulteration is still a well-known problem. RESULTS: The line-scan Raman imaging system was used to collect Raman hyperspectral images of adulterated sugars, made by mixing soft sugar and cheap glucose in seven different ratios. With the 0 and 3 mm (optimal offset distance) between line-laser source and scanning line, the Raman hyperspectral images of adulterated sugars covered by packaging plastic were acquired respectively. Using adulterated samples un-covered by packaging plastic as training samples, the Random Forest prediction model was developed, and excellent prediction performance was achieved for adulterated samples un-covered by packaging plastics. Compared with Raman data acquired with 0 mm offset distance, the performance of the prediction model was significantly improved, with 0.957 for coefficient of determination (R2 ), 0.413 for root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP), and 4.846 for residual predictive deviation (RPD), for adulterated samples with plastic packaging acquired with the 3 mm offset distance. CONCLUSIONS: The novel non-destructive method based on spatially offset Raman imaging technology, which can reduce the interference of packaging materials and enhance the signal of internal interesting materials, was proposed for detection of adulterated sugar with plastic packaging. The experiment results show that spatially offset imaging technology provides a candidate method for detecting adulteration of packaged foods. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

Automated fruit inspection using cameras involves the analysis of a collection of views of the same fruit obtained by rotating a fruit while it is transported. Conventionally, each view is analyzed independently. However, in order to get a global score of the fruit quality, it is necessary to match the defects between adjacent views to prevent counting them more than once and assert that the whole surface has been examined. To accomplish this goal, this paper estimates the 3D rotation undergone by the fruit using a single camera. A 3D model of the fruit geometry is needed to estimate the rotation. This paper proposes to model the fruit shape as a 3D spheroid. The spheroid size and pose in each view is estimated from the silhouettes of all views. Once the geometric model has been fitted, a single 3D rotation for each view transition is estimated. Once all rotations have been estimated, it is possible to use them to propagate defects to neighbor views or to even build a topographic map of the whole fruit surface, thus opening the possibility to analyze a single image (the map) instead of a collection of individual views. A large effort was made to make this method as fast as possible. Execution times are under 0.5 ms to estimate each 3D rotation on a standard I7 CPU using a single core.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The present paper reviews the occurrence of neoplasms in swine and presents a case series of 56 tumors submitted to the Slaughterhouse Support Network (Servei de Suport a Escorxadors [SESC] IRTA-CReSA]) from slaughtered pigs from 1998 to 2018 (April) in Catalonia (Spain). The aim of the study was to describe the spectrum of spontaneous neoplastic lesions found in slaughtered pigs and to compare the reported tumor cases with previous published data. Lymphoid neoplasms were characterized and classified using the WHO classification adapted for animals. RESULTS: The most reported neoplasm during this period was lymphoma (28). Within lymphomas, the B-cell type was the most common, being the diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (15/28) the most represented subtype. Other submitted non-lymphoid neoplasms included melanoma (7), nephroblastoma (3), mast cell tumor (2), liposarcoma (2), osteochondromatosis (2), papillary cystadenocarcinoma (1), peripheral nerve sheath tumor (1), lymphoid leukemia (1), fibropapilloma (1), hemangiosarcoma (1), hepatoma (1), histiocytic sarcoma (1), pheochromocytoma (1) and osteosarcoma (1). CONCLUSIONS: The existence of a well-established Slaughterhouse Support Network allowed the compilation of comprehensive data for further epidemiological and pathological studies, particularly about less commonly reported lesions in livestock such as neoplasms in pigs.
