ABSTRACT

Freshwater shrimp are a rich species group, with a long and problematic taxonomic history attributed to their wide distribution and similar morphological characteristics. Shrimp diversity and species identification are important cornerstones for fisheries management. However, identification based on morphological characteristics is a difficult task for a nonspecialist. Abundant freshwater shrimp species are distributed in the waters of Henan Province, but investigations of freshwater shrimp are limited in this region, especially concerning molecular features. Here, we combined morphology and DNA barcodes to reveal the species diversity of freshwater shrimp in Henan province. A total of 1,200 freshwater shrimp samples were collected from 46 sampling sites, and 222 samples were chosen for further microscopic examination and molecular delimitation. We used tree-based methods (NJ, ML, and bPTP) and distance-based methods (estimation of the paired genetic distances and ABGD) to delimit species. The results showed that there were nine morphospecies based on morphological characteristics; all could effectively be defined by molecular methods, among which bPTP and ABGD defined 13 and 8 MOTUs, respectively. The estimation of the paired genetic distances of K2P and the p-distances had similar results. Mean K2P distances and p-distances within species were both equal to 1.2%. The maximum intraspecific genetic distances of all species were less than 2%, with the exception of Palaemon modestus and M. maculatum. Various analyses have shown that P. modestus and M. maculatum have a large genetic differentiation, which may indicate the existence of cryptic species. By contrast, DNA barcoding could unambiguously discriminate 13 species and detect cryptic diversity. Our results demonstrate the high efficiency of DNA barcoding to delimit freshwater shrimp diversity and detect the presence of cryptic species.

ABSTRACT

The aquatic risk assessment of pesticides in tropical areas has often been disputed to rely on toxicity data generated from tests performed with temperate species. Given the differences in ecosystem structure between temperate and tropical ecosystems, test species other than those used in temperate regions have been proposed as surrogates for tropical aquatic effect assessments. Freshwater shrimps, for example are important components of tropical freshwater ecosystems, both in terms of their role in ecosystem functioning and their economic value. In the present study, available toxicity data of (tropical and sub-tropical) freshwater shrimps for insecticides and fungicides were compiled and compared with those available for Daphnia magna and other aquatic invertebrates. Freshwater shrimps appeared to be especially sensitive to GABA-gated chloride channel antagonist and sodium channel modulator insecticides. However, shrimp taxa showed a moderate and low sensitivity to acetylcholinesterase inhibiting insecticides and fungicides respectively. Implications for the use of freshwater shrimps in tropical pesticide effect assessments and research needs are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Objective. To determine the fecundity and fertility of Macrobrachium amazonicum (freshwater shrimp) of the Piedemonte llanero. Materials and methods. The animals were caught at a fish farm, in the municipality of Restrepo, Meta, Colombia and transported to the fish station of the Institute of Aquaculture of the University of the Llanos. The body weight (g), and total length (mm) of mature females and the fecundity and fertility (number of eggs and larvae/female, respectively) were determined. The diameter and the length of the eggs were determined to calculate their volume. Results. The fecundity varied from 120 to 549 eggs with an average of 331 ± 93. Regarding fertility, the females showed 287 ± 19 larvae, with an interval between 102 and 703. A highly positive lineal regression (r2 between 0.85 and 0.91) was observed between fecundity and fertility, and body weight and total length (p < 0.001). The egg diameter was 750.7 ± 2.9 µm (range: 500 - 1000 µm) and egg length of 974.2 ± 3.6 µm (525-1200 µm). The egg size was 296.2 ± 9.7 µm3. Conclusions. The determination of fecundity and fertility for Macrobrachium amazonicum in the Piedemonte Llanero was lower to the results obtained in other studies; however, the size of the eggs was higher. The results could infer that the species breeds throughout the year and allows easy handling and farming in captivity.

ABSTRACT

Samples of Macrobrachium potiuna (Müller, 1880) were collected in the Moinhos' River from July 2001 to June 2002. The aim of this study was providing some information about the population structure of this species. In the laboratory, the shrimps were sexed, measured and classified according to developmental stages: mature, immature and sexually undifferentiated. A total of 1162 shrimps was collected, being 52% immature, 46% matures and 2.6% sexually undifferentiated. The immature individuals showed a positive correlation with the water temperature, occurring with greater frequency until 21 ºC. The total length varied from 9.5 to 49.1 mm, with males being the largest ones of the population. The size frequency distribution was characterized by two modes. The sex ratio of 1:1 was observed. A larger number of males was recorded in the spring and ovigerous females in the spring and summer. The juvenile recruitment took place in the autumn, by registering a time lag of four months between the peak of ovigerous females and the entrance of recruits.
