ABSTRACT

Background: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is distinguished by left ventricle (LV) dilation accompanied by systolic dysfunction. However, some studies suggested also a high prevalence of LV diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), similar to a general cohort of heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (LVEF). The bulk of evidence, mostly arising from basic studies, suggests a causative link between cardiac fibrosis (CF) and LVDD. However, still, there remains a scarcity of data on LVDD and CF. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the association between CF and LVDD in DCM patients. Methods: The study population was composed of 102 DCM patients. Replacement CF was evaluated qualitatively (late gadolinium enhancement - LGE) and quantitively (LGE extent); interstitial cardiac fibrosis was assessed via extracellular volume (ECV). Based on echocardiography patients were divided into normal and elevated left atrial pressure (nLAP, eLAP) groups. Results: 42 % of patients had eLAP. They displayed higher troponin and NT-proBNP. Both groups did not differ in terms of LGE presence and extent; however, eLAP patients had larger ECV: 30.1 ± 5.6 % vs. 27.8 ± 3.9 %, p = 0.03. Moreover, ECV itself was found to be an independent predictor of LVDD (OR = 0.901; 95 %CI 0.810-0.999; p = 0.047; normalised for LVEF and RVOT diameter). Conclusions: More than two-in-five DCM patients had at least moderate LVDD. The mere presence or extent of replacement cardiac fibrosis is similar in patients with nLAP and eLAP. On the other hand, interstitial cardiac fibrosis is more pronounced in those with a higher grade of LVDD. ECV was found to be an independent predictor of LVDD in DCM.

ABSTRACT

The identification of ventricular premature complexes during a cardiological evaluation necessitates the implementation of diagnostic processes aimed at discerning the clinical context that may predispose individuals to a high risk of sudden cardiac death. Epidemiological studies reveal that ventricular premature beats occur in approximately 75% of healthy (or seemingly healthy) individuals, as long as there is no evidence of underlying structural heart disease, such as benign idiopathic ventricular extrasystole originating from the right and left ventricular outflow tracts. In the real world, however, ventricular ectopic beats with morphologies very similar to seemingly benign occurrences are not uncommon. They are notable in subjects exhibiting rapid and complex repetitive forms during exercise testing and Holter electrocardiogram. Additionally, these subjects may display more or less extensive scarring signs on cardiac magnetic resonance and may have a family history of cardiomyopathy and/or sudden cardiac death. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to critically analyse the process of evaluating premature ventricular complexes, which is crucial for accurate risk stratification. The latter cannot overlook some inevitable elements, including morphology, origin, complexity, and the associated clinical setting (absence or presence of structural heart disease).

ABSTRACT

Purpose To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effect of enzyme replacement therapy on cardiac MRI parameters in patients with Fabry disease. Materials and Methods A systematic literature search was conducted from January 1, 2000, through January 1, 2024, in PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. Study outcomes were changes in the following parameters: (a) left ventricular wall mass (LVM), measured in grams; (b) LVM indexed to body mass index, measured in grams per meters squared; (c) maximum left ventricular wall thickness (MLVWT), measured in millimeters; (d) late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) extent, measured in percentage of LVM; and (e) native T1 mapping, measured in milliseconds. A random-effects meta-analysis of the pooled mean differences between baseline and follow-up parameters was conducted. The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022336223). Results The final analysis included 11 studies of a total of 445 patients with Fabry disease (mean age ± SD, 41 years ± 11; 277 male, 168 female). Between baseline and follow-up cardiac MRI, the following did not change: T1 mapping (mean difference, 6 msec [95% CI: -2, 15]; two studies, 70 patients, I2 = 88%) and LVM indexed (mean difference, -1 g/m2 [95% CI: -6, 3]; four studies, 290 patients, I2 = 81%). The following measures minimally decreased: LVM (mean difference, -18 g [95% CI: -33, -3]; seven studies, 107 patients, I2 = 96%) and MLVWT (mean difference, -1 mm [95% CI: -2, -0.02]; six studies, 151 patients, I2 = 90%). LGE extent increased (mean difference, 1% [95% CI: 1, 1]; three studies, 114 patients, I2 = 85%). Conclusion In patients with Fabry disease, enzyme replacement therapy was associated with stabilization of LVM, MLVWT, and T1 mapping values, whereas LGE extent mildly increased. ABSTRACT

This study examined the influence of growth temperature and dopant concentration on the properties of Gd- and Ni-doped zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs). ZnO seed layers were deposited on glass substrates using a sol-gel and dip-coating approach. Gd- and Ni-doped ZnO NRs were hydrothermally grown on the seed layers at different temperatures such as 75, 90, and 105°C for a constant growth time of 5 h. The crystal structure, optical, surface morphology views, and electrical properties of the NRs were extensively investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-visible spectroscopy, and four probe experimental methods. The XRD analysis confirmed the successful substitution of Zn2+ ions by Gd3+ and Ni2+ within the ZnO main matrices. The reordering of hexagonal structures with varied electronegativity, ionic radius dimensions, and valence electron states of Gd and Ni dopants affected seriously the fundamental characteristic features of NRs. The SEM images showed that the ZnO NRs grown at 90°C possessed a more favorable surface morphology and well-defined hexagonal shape compared with those grown at other growth temperatures. Higher dopant concentration led to an increase in NR diameter but a decrease in density depending on the increase in the space between the NRs. Additionally, the optical transmittance was found to generally enhance with increasing dopant concentration. The results obtained highlighted the interplay between growth temperature, dopant type and concentration in tailoring the structural, morphological, and optical properties of Gd- and Ni-doped ZnO NRs, paving the way for the development of optimized nanomaterials for various applications. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The XRD analysis confirmed the successful substitution of Zn2+ ions by Gd3+ and Ni2+ within the ZnO main matrices. ABSTRACT

Standardized MR imaging protocols are important for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the appropriate use of MR imaging in routine clinical practice. Advances in using MR imaging to establish an earlier diagnosis of MS, safety concerns regarding intravenous gadolinium-based contrast agents, and the value of spinal cord MR imaging for diagnostic, prognostic, and monitoring purposes suggest a changing role of MR imaging for the management and care of MS patients. The MR imaging protocol emphasizes 3 dimensional acquisitions for optimal comparison over time.

ABSTRACT

Cancer is a major worldwide public health problem. Although there have already been astonishing advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment, the scientific community continues to make huge efforts to develop new methods to treat cancer. The main objective of this work is to prepare, using a green sol-gel method with coconut water powder (CWP), a new nanocomposite with a mixture of Gd3Fe5O12 and ZnFe2O4, which has never been synthesized previously. Therefore, we carried out a structural (DTA-TG and X-ray diffraction), morphological (SEM), and magnetic (VSM and hyperthermia) characterization of the prepared samples. The prepared nanocomposite denoted a saturation magnetization of 11.56 emu/g at room temperature with a ferromagnetic behavior and with a specific absorption rate (SAR) value of 0.5 ± 0.2 (W/g). Regarding cytotoxicity, for concentrations < 10 mg/mL, it does not appear to be toxic. Although the obtained results were interesting, the high particle size was identified as a problem for the use of this nanocomposite.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To verify the usefulness of a deep learning model for determining the presence or absence of contrast-enhanced myocardium in late gadolinium-enhancement images in cardiac MRI. METHODS: We used 174 late gadolinium-enhancement myocardial short-axis images obtained from contrast-enhanced cardiac MRI performed using a 3.0T MRI system at the University of Tokyo Hospital. Of these, 144 images were used for training, extracting a region of interest targeting the heart, scaling signal intensity, and data augmentation were performed to obtain 3312 training images. The interpretation report of two cardiology specialists of our hospital was used as the correct label. A learning model was constructed using a convolutional neural network and applied to 30 test data. In all cases, the acquired mean age was 56.4±12.1 years, and the male-to-female ratio was 1 : 0.82. RESULTS: Before and after data augmentation, sensitivity remained consistent at 93.3%, specificity improved from 0.0% to 100.0%, and accuracy improved from 46.7% to 96.7%. CONCLUSION: The prediction accuracy of the deep learning model developed in this research is high, suggesting its high usefulness.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) increases stroke and mortality in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Cardiac MRI (CMR) is increasingly used to detect late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) as a reliable indicator of left ventricular fibrosis, a potential predisposing factor of AF. Our research explored the correlation between left ventricular LGE and AF prevalence in HCM. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 351 HCM patients who underwent CMR. LGE percentages (0%, 1-5%, 6-14%, ≥15%) on CMR were compared with AF prevalence in HCM patients. Demographic, comorbidity, and imaging data were analyzed using appropriate univariate and multivariate analyses assessing for significant differences in AF prevalence. The predetermined significance level was p < 0.05. RESULTS: CMR demonstrated increased LGE in those with AF (p = 0.004). Increased LGE correlated with increased AF rates: 27.6% (0% LGE), 38.5% (1-5% LGE), 44.4% (6-14% LGE), and 54.7% (≥15% LGE) (p = 0.101, p = 0.043, p = 0.002, respectively, vs. 0% LGE). Adjusted for age, differences persisted and were most evident for LGE >15% (p = 0.001). Multivariate analysis, factoring age, gender, BMI, RVSP, and LVEF, supported LGE (odds ratio of 1.20, p = 0.036) and LAVI (odds ratio 1.05, 1.02-1.07, p < 0.001) as predictive markers for AF prevalence. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests a correlation between ventricular LGE and AF in patients with HCM. LGE exceeding 15% was associated with a significant increase in AF prevalence. These patients may require more frequent AF monitoring.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Right ventricular (RV) fibrosis represents both adaptive and maladaptive responses to the overloaded RV condition. Its role in pulmonary hypertension (PH) associated with secundum atrial septal defect (ASD), which is the most common adult congenital heart disease (CHD), remains poorly understood. Methods: We enrolled 65 participants aged ≥18 years old with uncorrected secundum ASD who had undergone clinically indicated right heart catheterization (RHC), divided into the non-PH group (n = 7), PH group (n = 42), and Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) group (n = 16). We conducted cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) studies with late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) imaging, native T1 mapping, and extracellular volume (ECV) measurement to evaluate the extent and clinical correlates of RV fibrosis. Results: LGE was present in 94% of the population and 86% of the non-PH group, mostly located at the right ventricular insertion point (RVIP) regions. LGE in the septal and inferior RV region was predominantly observed in the ES group compared to the other groups (p = 0.031 and p < 0.001, respectively). The mean LGE scores in the ES and PH groups were significantly higher than those in the non-PH group (3.38 ± 0.96 vs. 2.74 ± 1.04 vs. 1.57 ± 0.79; p = 0.001). The ES and PH groups had significantly higher degrees of interstitial RV fibrosis compared to those in the non-PH group, indicated by native T1 (1,199.9 ± 68.9 ms vs. 1,131.4 ± 47.8 ms vs. 1,105.4 ± 44.0 ms; p < 0.001) and ECV (43.6 ± 6.6% vs. 39.5 ± 4.9% vs. 39.4 ± 5.8%; p = 0.037). Additionally, native T1 significantly correlated with pulmonary vascular resistance (r = 0.708, p < 0.001), RV ejection fraction (r = -0.468, p < 0.001) and peripheral oxygen saturation (r = -0.410, p = 0.001). Conclusion: In patients with uncorrected secundum ASD, RV fibrosis may occur before the development of PH and progressively intensify alongside the progression of PH severity. A higher degree of RV fibrosis, derived from CMR imaging, correlates with worse hemodynamics, RV dysfunction, and poorer clinical conditions.

As the demand for rare earth elements (REEs) continues to surge in diverse industrial and medical domains, the ecological consequences of their ubiquitous presence have garnered heightened attention. Among the REEs, gadolinium (Gd), commonly used in medical imaging contrast agents, has emerged as a pivotal concern due to its inadvertent introduction into marine ecosystems via wastewater release. This study delves into the complex ecotoxicological implications of Gd contamination, focusing on its impact on the embryonic development and sperm functionality of Mytilus galloprovincialis. The findings from this study underscore the potential hazards posed by this rare element, offering a critical perspective on the ecological risks associated with Gd. Notably, this exploratory work reveals that Gd exerts a significant embryotoxic effect at elevated concentrations, with an observed half maximal effective concentration (EC50) value of 0.026 mg/L. Additionally, Gd exposure leads to a considerable reduction in sperm motility and alters sperm morfo-kinetic parameters, especially at a concentration of 5.6 mg/L. The results highlight a dose-dependent relationship between Gd exposure and the prevalence of specific malformation types in Mytilus embryos, further providing crucial insights into the potential risks imposed by this rare earth element.

Herein, we report a case of myocarditis in a 27-year-old male with long-term follow-up using longitudinal peak systolic strain (LPSS) measurements with transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). On admission, a predominant decrease was observed in the LPSS in the posterolateral segments of the TTE. After a period of two weeks, the values of the LPSS observed in the posterolateral segments were still slightly reduced, which is consistent with the LGE results in CMR. After a duration of 16 months, an improvement was noted in the LPSS and LGE results in all the segments. Moreover, a time-phase discrepancy was observed in the segmental longitudinal strain curve for a period of two weeks from the onset of myocarditis. However, an improvement in the discrepancy was detected after 16 months. Learning objective: Longitudinal peak systolic strain (LPSS) on transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) has predominantly focused on diagnosing the acute phase of myocarditis. Herein, LPSS was evaluated not only in the acute phase but also in the chronic phase. Furthermore, the relationship between the results of segmental LPSS and late gadolinium enhancement was documented. We would like to emphasize the usefulness of LPSS on TTE both for identifying myocarditis and as a tool for the long-term follow-up of patients.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of 3D NerveVIEW sequence with gadolinium contrast on the visualization of pelvic nerves and their branches compared to that without contrast. Methods: Participants were scanned twice using 3D NerveVIEW sequence with and without gadolinium contrast to acquire pelvic nerve images. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and contrast ratio of the nerves were calculated and compared to determine the quality of images. To subjectively assess, using a 3-point scale, branch nerves critical to therapeutic decision-making, including the pelvic splanchnic nerve and pelvic plexus, the superior gluteal nerve, and the pudendal nerve. Results: In the 32 eligible participants after using contrast, the CNRs of the images of nerve-to-bone and nerve-to-vessel significantly increased (p < 0.05). The CR of the images with contrast of all nerve-to-surrounding tissues (i.e., bone, muscle, blood vessels, and fat) were also found significantly higher (p < 0.05). The assessment of observers also shows higher scores for images with contrast compared to images without contrast. Conclusion: The 3D NerveVIEW sequence combined with gadolinium contrast improved vascular suppression, increased the contrast between pelvic nerves and surrounding tissue, and enhanced the visualization of nerves and their branches. This study may be helpful for the technically challenging preoperative planning of pelvic diseases surgery.

As a developing radiation treatment for tumors, neutron capture therapy (NCT) has less side effects and a higher efficacy than conventional radiation therapy. Drugs with specific isotopes are indispensable counterparts of NCT, as they are the indespensable part of the neutron capture reaction. Since the creation of the first and second generations of boron-containing reagents, NCT has significantly advanced. Notwithstanding, the extant NCT medications, predominantly comprised of small molecule boron medicines, have encountered challenges such monofunctionality, inadequate targeting of tumors, and hypermetabolism. There is an urgent need to promote the research and development of new types of NCT drugs. Bio-nanomaterials can be introduced into the realm of NCT, and nanotechnology can give conventional medications richer functionality and significant adaptability. This can complement the advantages of each other and is expected to develop more new drugs with less toxicity, low side effects, better tumor targeting, and high biocompatibility. In this review, we summarized the research progress of nano-drugs in NCT based on the different types and sources of isotopes used, and introduced the attempts and efforts made by relevant researchers in combining nanomaterials with NCT, hoping to provide pivotal references for promoting the development of the field of tumor radiotherapy.

ABSTRACT

To establish clinical prediction models of vessels encapsulating tumor clusters (VETC) pattern using preoperative contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid magnetic resonance imaging (EOB-MRI) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A total of 111 resected HCC lesions from 101 patients were included. Preoperative imaging features of CEUS and EOB-MRI, postoperative recurrence, and survival information were collected from medical records. The best subset regression and multivariable Cox regression were used to select variables to establish the prediction model. The VETC-positive group had a statistically lower survival rate than the VETC-negative group. The selected variables were peritumoral enhancement in the arterial phase (AP), hepatobiliary phase (HBP) on EOB-MRI, intratumoral branching enhancement in the AP of CEUS, intratumoral hypoenhancement in the portal phase of CEUS, incomplete capsule, and tumor size. A nomogram was developed. High and low nomogram scores with a cutoff value of 168 points showed different recurrence-free survival rates and overall survival rates. The area under the curve (AUC) and accuracy were 0.804 and 0.820, respectively, indicating good discrimination. Decision curve analysis showed a good clinical net benefit (threshold probability > 5%), while the Hosmer-Lemeshow test yielded excellent calibration (P = 0.6759). The AUC of the nomogram model combining EOB-MRI and CEUS was higher than that of the models with EOB-MRI factors only (0.767) and CEUS factors only (0.7). The nomogram verified by bootstrapping showed AUC and calibration curves similar to those of the nomogram model. The Prediction model based on CEUS and EOB-MRI is effective for preoperative noninvasive diagnosis of VETC.

Background: Myocardial segmental motion is associated with cardiovascular pathology, often assessed through myocardial strain features. The stability of the motion can be influenced by myocardial fibrosis. This research aimed to explore the complexity metrics (CM) of myocardial segmental motion curves, observe their correlation with late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) transmural extension (TE), and assess diagnostic efficacy combined with segmental strains in different TE segments. Methods: We included 42 myocardial infarction patients, dividing images into 672 myocardial segments (208 remote, 384 viable, and 80 unviable segments based on TE). Radial and circumferential segmental strain, along with CM for motion curves, were extracted. Correlation between CM and LGE, as well as the potential distinguishing role of CM, was evaluated using Pearson correlation, univariate linear regression (F-test), multivariate regression analysis (T-test), area under curve (AUC), machine learning models, and DeLong test. Results: All CMs showed significant linear correlation with TE (P < 0.001). Six CMs were correlated with TE (r > 0.3), with radial frequency drift (FD) displayed the strongest correlation (r = 0.496, P < 0.001). Radial and circumferential FD significantly differed in higher TE myocardium than in remote segments (P < 0.05). Radial FD had practical diagnostic efficacy (remote vs. unviable AUC = 0.89, viable vs. unviable AUC = 0.77, remote vs. viable AUC = 0.65). Combining CM with segmental strain features boosted diagnostic efficacy than models using only segmental strain features (DeLong test, P < 0.05). Conclusions: The CM of myocardial motion curves has been associated with LGE infarction, and combining CM with strain features improves the diagnosis of different myocardial LGE infarction degrees.

Activated guided irradiation by X-ray (AGuIX) nanoparticles are gadolinium-based agents that have the dual benefit of mimicking the effects of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent used in a clinical routine and enhancing the radiotherapeutic activity of conventional X-rays (for cancer treatment). This "theragnostic" action is explained on the one hand by the paramagnetic properties of gadolinium and on the other hand by the generation of high densities of secondary radiation following the interaction of ionizing radiation and high-Z atoms, which leads to enhanced radiation dose deposits within the tumors where the nanoparticles accumulate. Here, we report the results of a phase I trial that aimed to assess the safety and determine the optimal dose of AGuIX nanoparticles in combination with chemoradiation and brachytherapy in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer. AGuIX nanoparticles were administered intravenously and appropriately accumulated within tumors on a dose-dependent manner, as assessed by T1-weighted MRI, with a rapid urinary clearance of uncaught nanoparticles. We show that the observed tumor accumulation of the compounds can support precise delineation of functional target volumes at the time of brachytherapy based on gadolinium enhancement. AGuIX nanoparticles combined with chemoradiation appeared well tolerated among the 12 patients treated, with no dose-limiting toxicity observed. Treatment yielded excellent local control, with all patients achieving complete remission of the primary tumor. One patient had a distant tumor recurrence. These results demonstrate the clinical feasibility of using theranostic nanoparticles to augment the accuracy of MRI-based treatments while focally enhancing the radiation activity in tumors.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To evaluate different cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) parameters for the differentiation of light chain amyloidosis (AL) and transthyretin-related amyloidosis (ATTR). METHODS AND RESULTS: In total, 75 patients, 53 with cardiac amyloidosis (20 patients with AL (66±12 years, 14 males [70%]) and 33 patients with ATTR (78±5 years, 28 males [88%])) were retrospectively analyzed regarding CMR parameters such as T1 and T2 mapping, extracellular volume (ECV), and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) distribution patterns, and myocardial strain, and compared to a control cohort with other causes of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH; 22 patients (53±16 years, 17 males [85%])). One way-ANOVA and receiver operating characteristic analysis were used for statistical analysis. ECV was the single best parameter to differentiate between cardiac amyloidosis and controls (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.97, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 0.89-0.99, p<.0001, cutoff: >30%). T2 mapping was the best single parameter to differentiate between AL and ATTR amyloidosis (AL: 63±4 ms, ATTR: 58±2 ms, p<.001, AUC: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.74-0.94, cutoff: >61 ms). Subendocardial LGE was predominantly observed in AL patients (10/20 [50%] vs. 5/33 [15%]; p=.002). Transmural LGE was predominantly observed in ATTR patients (23/33 [70%] vs. 2/20 [10%]; p<.001). The diagnostic performance of T2 mapping to differentiate between AL and ATTR amyloidosis was further increased with the inclusion of LGE patterns (AUC: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.86-0.99]; p=.05). CONCLUSION: ECV differentiates cardiac amyloidosis from other causes of LVH. T2 mapping combined with LGE differentiates AL from ATTR amyloidosis with high accuracy on a patient level.

ABSTRACT

Adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration is known to be the only cryogenic refrigeration technology that can achieve ultralow temperatures (≪1 K) at gravity-free conditions. The key indexes to evaluate the performance of magnetic refrigerants are their magnetic entropy changes (-ΔSm) and magnetic ordering temperature (T0). Although, based on the factors affecting the -ΔSm of magnetic refrigerants, one has been able to judge if a magnetic refrigerant has a large -ΔSm, how to accurately predict their T0 remains a huge challenge due to the fact that the T0 of magnetic refrigerants is related to not only magnetic exchange but also single-ion anisotropy and magnetic dipole interaction. Here, we, taking GdCO3F (1), Gd(HCOO)F2, Gd2(SO4)3·8H2O, GdF3, Gd(HCOO)3 and Gd(OH)3 as examples, demonstrate that the T0 of magnetic refrigerants with very weak magnetic interactions and small anisotropy can be accurately predicted by integrating mean-field approximation with quantum Monte Carlo simulations, providing an effective method for predicting the T0 of ultralow-temperature magnetic refrigerants. Thus, the present work lays a solid foundation for the rational design and preparation of ultralow-temperature magnetic refrigerants in the future.

ABSTRACT

Anthropogenic gadolinium from MRI contrast agents has been detected in surface waters worldwide. It is released with the treated effluents of wastewater treatment plants, similar to other wastewater-derived substances (WWDS) such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products. We determined concentrations of the rare earth elements in tap water from Berlin, Germany, using an automated preconcentration procedure that is both time- and cost-efficient. Anthropogenic gadolinium concentrations in Berlin's tap water increased on average 30-fold between 2009 and 2021. However, the tap water composition responded quickly to the reduced number of MRI scans during the COVID-19 pandemic, and some districts show a decrease from 2016 to 2021. Since climate change causes groundwater levels to decline in many regions, this needs to be mitigated by artificial groundwater recharge with surface water. This will inevitably lead to an increase in WWDS in potable water, which can be cost-efficiently monitored using anthropogenic gadolinium as tracer.
