ABSTRACT

Various data types generated in the semiconductor manufacturing process can be used to increase product yield and reduce manufacturing costs. On the other hand, the data generated during the process are collected from various sensors, resulting in diverse units and an imbalanced dataset with a bias towards the majority class. This study evaluated analysis and preprocessing methods for predicting good and defective products using machine learning to increase yield and reduce costs in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The SECOM dataset is used to achieve this, and preprocessing steps are performed, such as missing value handling, dimensionality reduction, resampling to address class imbalances, and scaling. Finally, six machine learning models were evaluated and compared using the geometric mean (GM) and other metrics to assess the combinations of preprocessing methods on imbalanced data. Unlike previous studies, this research proposes methods to reduce the number of features used in machine learning to shorten the training and prediction times. Furthermore, this study prevents data leakage during preprocessing by separating the training and test datasets before analysis and preprocessing. The results showed that applying oversampling methods, excluding KM SMOTE, achieves a more balanced class classification. The combination of SVM, ADASYN, and MaxAbs scaling showed the best performance with an accuracy and GM of 85.14% and 72.95%, respectively, outperforming all other combinations.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcus is a common cause of pneumonia, meningitis, and other serious infections in children. The previous study has proved that the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) has sufficient immunogenicity in children. The data on long-term persistence of immunity will help the follow-up development work of pneumococcal vaccines. METHODS: Children who received the full vaccination course of the tested PCV13 in the previous clinical trial were enrolled again, and these who received other pneumococcal vaccines, or were infected with one or more serotypes of S. pneumoniae corresponding to PCV13 before enrollment were excluded. Participants were divided into four groups by age which is same as that of previous trial. The study lasted for 5 years, during which we measured pneumococcal antibodies of 13 serotypes included in PCV13 at particular points in time. Geometric mean concentrations (GMCs) and seropositive rates (the rate of IgG concentration ≥0.35 µg/mL) of antibodies against 13 serotypes were calculated. RESULTS: For the participants aged 2 months, five years after primary vaccination, except for serotypes 3 and 4, seropositive rates were 100%. GMCs of IgG antibodies against 13 serotypes ranged from 0.733 to 15.160 µg/mL. All of the participants aged 7-11 months had the serotype-specific IgG concentration ≥0.35 µg/mL four years after primary vaccination with the exception of serotypes 3, 4, 6 A and 9 V. IgG GMCs were 0.753-11.031 µg/mL. All participants aged 12-23 months and 2-5 years old had the serotype-specific IgG concentration ≥0.35 µg/mL three or two years after primary vaccination respectively, except for serotype 3. IgG GMCs ranged from 0.815 to 13.111 µg/mL, and 0.684 to 12.282 µg/mL respectively. CONCLUSION: PCV13 was applied to the population aged 2 months and 7 months - 5 years old with a good immune persistence, providing more extensive evidence of long-term efficacy for that vaccine. ABSTRACT

Due to the scheme of fixed-platform beam-steering radar and the space of the blast furnace being subjected to harsh environmental influences, the traditional detection methods of burden surface are limited by geometric distortion, noncoherent clutter, and noise interference, which leads to an increase in the image entropy value and the equivalent number of views, makes the density distribution of burden surface show a diffuse state, and greatly affects the stability and accuracy. In this paper, a new fixed-platform beam-steering radar synthetic aperture radar imaging method (FPBS-SAR) is proposed in the sensory domain of the blast furnace environment. From the perspective of fixed-platform beam-steering radar motion characteristics, the target range-azimuth coupled distance history model under the sub-aperture is established, the azimuthal Doppler variation characteristics of the fixed-platform beam-steering process are analyzed, and the compensation function of the transform domain for geometric disturbance correction is proposed. For noncoherent noise suppression in blast furnaces, the trimmed geometric mean-order-likelihood CFAR method is proposed to take into account the information of burden surface and clutter suppression. To verify the method, point target simulation and imaging for the industrial field measurement data are carried out. The results indicate that geometric distortion is well eliminated, the image entropy value and the equivalent number of views have decreased, and noncoherent noise in blast furnaces is suppressed.

ABSTRACT

Bet-hedging occurs when unreliable environments select for genotypes exhibiting a lower variance in fitness at the cost of a lower mean fitness for each batch of progeny. This means that at the level of the genotype, the production of mostly non-optimal phenotypes may be favored when at least some phenotypes are successful. As extreme unreliable climatic events are increasing because of climate change, it is pertinent to investigate the potential of bet-hedging strategies that allow insects to cope with climate change. Evidence for bet-hedging is scarce in most insects, including parasitoids, but the unique lifestyle and biology of parasitoids leads to the expectation that bet-hedging may occur frequently. Here, we evaluate a range of parasitoid traits for which a bet-hedging strategy could be envisioned even if bet-hedging has not been identified as such yet. Under-identification of bet-hedging in nature could have resulted from a major focus of studies on parasitoid life history evolution and foraging behavior on optimality models, predicting how mean fitness can be maximized. Most environmental factors, however, vary unpredictably. Life history and behavioral adaptations are thus expected to be affected by environmental stochasticity. In this paper, we review different aspects of parasitoid behavior, physiology, and life histories and ask the question whether parasitoid traits could have evolved under selection by environmental stochasticity.

ABSTRACT

The Mu Us Sandy Land is a region characterized by wind-blown sand and soil erosion in northern China. To enhance the soil quality of this area, various organic materials were incorporated into the mixed soil at a volume ratio of 1:2 for feldspathic sandstone to sand. Culture was conducted in the field and under constant temperature conditions in laboratory culture chambers. Four treatments were established in the experiment, each calculated based on weight ratio and controlled (with no organic material added, CK); single application of straw (5% straw, P1); single application of biochar (5% biochar, P2); combined application of biochar and straw (5% biochar + 5% straw, P3). After 90 days of culture, soil samples were collected for analysis of various indicators such as soil aggregate particle size distribution, water stability of soil aggregates, mean weight diameter, mean geometric diameter, and fractal dimension using dry sieving and wet sieving methods. The objective is to establish a scientific basis and provide technical support for addressing the challenges associated with compound soil and implementing rational fertilization measures. The research results indicate that: (1) The quantity of aggregates > 0.25 mm under different treatments follows the order CK < P1 < P2 < P3, and the differences between treatments are significant (P < 0.05); (2) Soil water stability, mean weight diameter (MWD), mean geometric diameter (GMD), and fractal dimension of soil aggregates in compound soil with different organic material additions are superior to the control, and the effect of biochar on improving soil aggregates is better than that of corn straw. The combined application of both significantly improves the effect compared to single applications. In both culture modes, under wet sieving, the P3 treatment shows the highest MWD and GMD of soil aggregates, with an increase ranging from 3.45% to 85% and 4.55% to 38.46%, respectively, compared to other treatments. (3) The trend of fractal dimension among treatments is consistent: P3 < P2 < P1 < CK, and the differences between treatments are significant (P < 0.05). Moreover, there is a good negative correlation linear equation relationship between the fractal dimension (y) and WR > 0.25 (x) of compound soil, with a correlation coefficient of up to 0.9851. In conclusion, the incorporation of organic materials can effectively enhance the proportion of macroaggregates in compound soil consisting of Feldspathic sandstone and sand, thereby improving soil stability and erosion resistance. The optimal outcome is achieved through the combined application of biochar and straw. Indoor culture proves to be more effective than field culture, while wet sieving accurately reflects the structural characteristics of compound soil under both dry and wet sieving treatments.

ABSTRACT

This paper highlights the critical role of pH or proton activity measurements in environmental studies and emphasises the importance of applying proper statistical approaches when handling pH data. This allows for more informed decisions to effectively manage environmental data such as from mining influenced water. Both the pH and {H+} of the same system display different distributions, with pH mostly displaying a normal or bimodal distribution and {H+} showing a lognormal distribution. It is therefore a challenge of whether to use pH or {H+} to compute the mean or measures of central tendency for further environmental statistical analyses. In this study, different statistical techniques were applied to understand the distribution of pH and {H+} from four different mine sites, Metsämonttu in Finland, Felsendome Rabenstein in Germany, Eastrand and Westrand mine water treatment plants in South Africa. Based on the statistical results, the geometric mean can be used to calculate the average of pH if the distribution is unimodal. For a multimodal pH data distribution, peak identifying methods can be applied to extract the mean for each data population and use them for further statistical analyses.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Herbal medicines are occasionally used in combination with conventional antidepressants to mitigate various depression-associated symptoms. However, there is limited information on herb-antidepressant interactions. In this study, we investigated the pharmacokinetic (PK) effects of four herbal medicines (Gami-soyosan, Banhasasim-tang, Ojeok-san, and Bojungikgi-tang) on escitalopram, a commonly used antidepressant. Patients and Methods: In this open-label, fixed-sequence, three-period, crossover study, 18 participants were enrolled and divided into two groups. Each group received a 10 mg oral dose of escitalopram in period 1. Participants took escitalopram once daily and their assigned herbal medicines thrice a day for 7 d in periods 2 (group 1: Gami-soyosan, group 2: Ojeok-san) and 3 (group 1: Banhasasim-tang; group 2: Bojungikgi-tang). The primary endpoints were Cmax,ss and AUCtau,ss of escitalopram. Cmax,ss and AUCtau,ss in period 1 were obtained using nonparametric superposition from single-dose data. The PK endpoints were classified according to the CYP2C19 phenotype. Results: Of 18 participants, 16 completed the study. Systemic exposure to escitalopram resulted in a minor increase in the presence of each herbal medicine. The geometric mean ratios (GMRs, combination with herbal medicines/escitalopram monotherapy) and their 90% confidence intervals (CIs) for Cmax,ss and AUCtau,ss were as follows: Gamisoyosan- 1.1454 (0.9201, 1.4258) and 1.0749 (0.8084, 1.4291), Banhasasim-tang-1.0470 (0.7779, 1.4092) and 1.0465 (0.7035, 1.5568), Ojeok-san-1.1204 (0.8744, 1.4357) and 1.1267 (0.8466, 1.4996), and Bojungikgi-tang-1.1264 (0.8594, 1.4762) and 1.1400 (0.8515, 1.5261), respectively. Furthermore, no significant differences in the GMRs of Cmax,ss and AUCtau,ss were observed across different CYP2C19 phenotypes in any of the groups. Conclusion: The co-administration of escitalopram with Gami-soyosan, Banhasasim-tang, Ojeok-san, or Bojungikgi-tang did not exert significant PK effects on escitalopram. These findings provide valuable insights into the safe use of herbal medicines along with escitalopram.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the interactions between corn particle size (PS) and conditioning temperature (CT) on the performance, carcass traits, intestinal morphology, and immune responses in broilers fed a corn-soybean meal-based diet. A total of 360 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly allocated into six dietary treatments in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement, consisting of two corn PS (finely ground with geometric mean diameter (GMD) of 357 µm (PSF) vs. coarsely ground corn with GMD of 737 µm (PSC), and three CT [unconditioned (CTU), conditioned at 75 °C (CT75) and 90 °C (CT90)]. Birds were accommodated in 30 pens with five replicates and 12 chicks per each pen. There was no interaction between corn PS and CT on the growth performance and immune response of broilers at any growth phases. However, during the starter (0-10 days) period, the average daily weight gain (ADWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of PSF-fed birds were significantly improved compared to those fed PSC (p < 0.05). During the starter (0-10 days) and grower (11-24 days) periods, increasing the conditioning temperature of corn increased the ADWG, while in the starter phase only the CT75 caused a lower FCR (p < 0.05). Broilers fed PSF corn showed the lowest FCR during the finisher (25-42 days) period compared to those fed PSC (p < 0.05). Conditioning corn at 75 °C reduced FCR during the finisher (25-42 days) period compared to the birds fed CTU and CT90 corn (p < 0.05). In whole experimental periods (1-42 days), PSF and CT75 treatment increased the ADWG compared to the PSC and CTU (p < 0.05). The CT75 treatment improved primary total anti-sheep red blood cell (SRBCs) titer (IgT) and IgM and secondary IgT and IgG responses compared to the other experimental groups (CTU and CT90) (p < 0.05). No significant PS × CT interaction was found on the Newcastle disease (ND) antibody titer of broiler chickens (p > 0.05). Feeding CT75 corn reduced duodenum and jejunum relative lengths compared to the birds fed diets containing CTU corn. Significant PS × CT interactions (p < 0.05) were observed for villus height, villus height to crypt depth, crypt depth, muscle thickness, and absorption surface area of the jejunum. The highest carcass yield was observed in the PSF-CT75 group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the use of finely ground corn (PSF) conditioned at 75 °C (CT75) was beneficial to growth performance, development of the digestive tract, jejunum histomorphometry and the immune responses of broilers.

Background: This longitudinal cohort study describes the kinetics in antibody levels after two doses of the bivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in girls (birth cohort 2001) vaccinated in the routine Dutch vaccination program at 12 years of age, up to 7.5 years post-vaccination. Also, the antibody response one month post-vaccination of the first cohort of boys (birth cohort 2012, vaccinated at 10 years of age) eligible for HPV vaccination in the Netherlands is presented. Method: Blood samples and questionnaire data were collected of girls and boys. HPV type-specific antibody concentrations (LU/mL) against HPV16/18/31/33/45/52/58 were assessed using a validated virus-like particle (VLP) multiplex immunoassay. For girls, antibody decays over time were modelled using the modified power-law decay model and the exponential decay model. Results: The Geometric Mean Concentrations (GMCs) remained higher for HPV16/18 than for HPV types 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58 among girls up to 7.5 years post-vaccination. The antibody levels of HPV16 and HPV18 reached plateau values of 482 and 159 LU/mL, respectively. Mathematical modelling showed that the half-life values of HPV16/18 were 2.4- to 4.5-fold higher compared with the half-life values of the other HPV types. Among boys (aged 10 years), the GMC for HPV16 was significantly higher than among girls one month post-vaccination (aged 12 years). Conclusion: The GMCs of all HPV types declined over time, although the GMCs of HPV16/18 remained relatively high up to 7.5 years post-vaccination. The GMCs for HPV16/18 among boys were at least equally high as the GMCs among girls at one month post-vaccination. Further follow-up of the cohort of boys is needed to gain knowledge on long-term immune responses of young boys following bivalent HPV vaccination.

ABSTRACT

This research introduces a revolutionary machinet learning algorithm-based quality estimation and grading system. The suggested work is divided into four main parts: Ppre-processing, neutroscopic model transformation, Feature Extraction, and Grading. The raw images are first pre-processed by following five major stages: read, resize, noise removal, contrast enhancement via CLAHE, and Smoothing via filtering. The pre-processed images are then converted into a neutrosophic domain for more effective mango grading. The image is processed under a new Geometric Mean based neutrosophic approach to transforming it into the neutrosophic domain. Finally, the prediction of TSS for the different chilling conditions is done by Improved Deep Belief Network (IDBN) and based on this; the grading of mango is done automatically as the model is already trained with it. Here, the prediction of TSS is carried out under the consideration of SSC, firmness, and TAC. A comparison between the proposed and traditional methods is carried out to confirm the efficacy of various metrics.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Epirubicin is widely used in many malignancies with good efficacy and tolerability. However, investigations about adverse events (AEs) using real-world information are still insufficient. Methods: We extracted Epirubicin-related reports submitted between the first quarter of 2014 and first quarter of 2023 from FAERS database. Four algorithms were utilized to evaluate whether there was a significant correlation between Epirubicin and AEs. Results: After de-duplicating, a total of 3919 cases were extracted. Among the 3919 cases, we identified 1472 AEs, 253 of which were found to be adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with Epirubicin. We analysed the occurrence of Epirubicin-induced ADRs and found several unexpected significant ADRs, such as hepatic artery stenosis, hepatic artery occlusion, intestinal atresia and so on. Interestingly, we found gait apraxia, a neurological condition, was also significantly associated with Epirubicin. To our knowledge, there haven't studies that have reported an association between gait disorders and the usage of epirubicin. Discussion: Our study identified new unexpected significant ADRs related to Epirubicin, providing new perspectives to the clinical use of Epirubicin.

ABSTRACT

The natural environment fluctuates for virtually every population of organisms. As a result, the fitness of a mutant may vary temporally. While commonly used for summarizing the effect of fluctuating selection on the mutant, geometric mean fitness can be misleading under some circumstances due to the influence of genetic drift. Here, we show by mathematical proof and computer simulation that, with genetic drift, the geometric mean fitness does not accurately reflect the overall effect of fluctuating selection. We propose an alternative measure based on the average expected allele frequency change caused by selection and demonstrate that this measure-effective fitness-better captures the overall effect of fluctuating selection in the presence of drift.

ABSTRACT

The intricate mechanisms of oil thermooxidation and their accurate prediction have long been hampered by the combinatory nature of propagation and termination reactions involving randomly generated radicals. To unravel this complexity, we suggest a two-scale mechanistic description that connects the chemical functions (scale 1) with the molecular carriers of these functions (scale 2). Our method underscores the importance of accounting for cross-reactions between radicals in order to fully comprehend the reactivities in blends. We rigorously tested and validated the proposed two-scale scheme on binary and ternary mixtures of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), yielding three key insights: (1) The abstraction of labile protons hinges on the carrier, defying the conventional focus on hydroperoxyl radical types. (2) Termination reactions between radicals adhere to the geometric mean law, exhibiting symmetric collision ratios. (3) The decomposition of hydroperoxides emerges as a monomolecular process above 80 °C, challenging the established combinatorial paradigm. Applicable across a wide temperature range (80 °C to 200 °C), our findings unlock the production of blends with controlled thermooxidation stability, optimizing the use of vegetable oils across applications: food science, biofuels, and lubricants.

ABSTRACT

Many studies have investigated the positivity rate of hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) after hepatitis B vaccine (HepB) immunization. However, the antibody level, assessed monthly or at more frequent intervals after each of the three doses, particularly within the first year after birth, has not been previously reported. To elucidate the level of antibody formation at various times after vaccination, the current study used the available detection data of HBsAb in hospitalized children to analyze the HBsAb level after immunization combined with their vaccination history. Both the positivity rate and geometric mean concentration (GMC) increased sequentially with immunization doses, reaching their peaks earlier after the third dose than after the first two doses, and the rate of HBsAb positivity was able to reach 100% between 11 and 90 days after completing the three doses of HepB. Within one year after receiving the three doses, the antibody positivity rate and GMC were maintained above 90% and 100 mIU/mL, respectively, and subsequently steadily declined, reaching the lowest value in the 9th and 10th years. The current findings reveal, in more detail, the level of antibody formation at different times following each dose of HepB in hospitalized children, particularly in the age group up to one year after vaccination. For the subjects of this study, we prefer to believe that the proportion of HBsAb non-response should be less than 5% after full immunization with HepB, provided that the appropriate time for blood collection is chosen.

ABSTRACT

In Italy, a sequential pneumococcal vaccination with conjugate vaccine (PCV) and polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) is recommended for individuals aged ≥ 65 years and those at risk for pneumococcal disease (PD) aged ≥ 6 years. The aim of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of the new vaccines, i.e., approved 15-valent and 20-valent PCVs. A published Markov model was adapted to evaluate the lifetime cost-effectiveness of vaccination with PCV15 + PPSV23 versus PCV13 + PPSV23, PCV20 alone, PCV20 + PPSV23, and No Vaccination. Simulated cohorts representing the Italian population, including individuals aged ≥ 65 years, those at risk aged 50-100 years, and those deemed high risk aged 18-100 years were assessed. Outcomes were accrued in terms of incremental PD cases, costs, quality-adjusted life years, life years, and the cost-utility ratio relative to PCV13 + PPSV23. The conservative base case analysis, including vaccine efficacy based on PCV13 data, showed that sequential vaccination with PCV15 or PCV20 in combination with PPSV23 is preferred over sequential vaccination with PCV13 + PPSV23. Especially in the high-risk group, PCV15 + PPSV23 sequential vaccination was dominant over No Vaccination and resulted in an ICUR of €3605 per QALY gained. Including PCV20 + PPSV23 into the comparison resulted in the domination of the PCV15 + PPSV23 and No Vaccination strategies. Additionally, explorative analysis, including the geometric mean titer (GMT) informed vaccine effectiveness (VE) was performed. In the low-risk and high-risk groups, the results of the GMT scenarios showed PCV15 + PPSV23 to be dominant over the other sequential vaccines. These findings suggest that if real-world studies would confirm a difference in vaccine effectiveness of PCV15 and PCV20 versus PCV13 based on GMT ratios, PCV15 + PPSV23 could prove a highly immunogenic and effective vaccination regime for the Italian adult population.

ABSTRACT

The prevention of musculoskeletal injuries and their related welfare and economic impacts represent an immediate priority for the horse racing industry. This prospective pilot study aimed to evaluate a method to quantitatively analyze scintigraphic features of specific anatomical regions of the horse's appendicular skeleton in combination with secondary measures of musculoskeletal metabolism in blood. Twelve horses referred for scintigraphic assessment of lameness were enrolled. Blood samples were collected immediately prior to the administration of radiotracer. Serum concentrations associated with bone turnover were determined for the following biomarkers: C-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen, proteoglycans and sulfated glycosaminoglycans, collagen type II, osteocalcin, and procollagen II C-terminal propeptide. Scintigraphic images underwent radiomic analysis of discrete regions of the distal limbs and these data were correlated to bone turnover markers. Three lame horses demonstrated asymmetrical radiomic abnormalities. The concentration of osteocalcin in the lame horses was significantly higher when compared to the control group, while no significant changes were observed for the other screened serum biomarkers. Findings from the current study provided evidence that radiomic analysis of equine scintigraphy is feasible. This method has the potential to interrogate which serum markers are associated with musculoskeletal injuries.

ABSTRACT

In order to promote sustainable agriculture and ensure food security, it has become more vital to identify the causes of soil pollution in agricultural areas. This study was carried out in order to determine the danger of heavy metal contamination in hazelnut production areas and to take the appropriate actions in accordance with the study's findings. In this context, the main objectives of this study were to (i) determine some physical, chemical, and biological properties and heavy metal concentrations of different soils in intensive hazelnut cultivation areas under humid ecological conditions; (ii) reveal the heavy metal pollution risks of these areas by their enrichment factor, contamination factor, geo-accumulation index, degree of contamination, pollution load index, and potential ecological risk index; (iii) analyze the quality of soils contaminated with heavy metals by their total enzyme activity index and the geometric mean of enzymatic activities; and (iv) explore the correlation between heavy metals and soil enzyme activity indices. According to our results, the average concentrations of heavy metals in the study area ranked as Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Ni > Cu > Co > Pb > Cd. Based on EF, the area was evaluated as between deficiency to low enrichment and moderate enrichment for all elements except for Cd. When the parameters used to assess the risk of heavy metal contamination were evaluated, it was determined that the risk of contamination of other elements in the study area, except Cd, was low. Finally, analyzing the heavy metals and soil enzyme activity indices shows that there is a negative correlation between Ni and GMea and TEI.

In this study, the effects of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) coupled with a catalyzed diesel particulate filter (CDPF) with different catalyst loadings on the power, fuel consumption, gaseous and particulate emissions from a non-road diesel engine were investigated. Results showed that the after-treatment had a negligible effect on the power and fuel consumption. The reduction effect of the DOC on the CO and hydrocarbon (HC) increased with the engine load. Further reductions occurred coupling with the CDPF. Increasing the catalyst loading resulted in a more significant reduction in the HC emissions than CO emissions. The DOC could increase the NO2 proportion to 37.9%, and more NO2 was produced when coupled with the CDPF below 250°C; above 250°C, more NO2 was consumed. The after-treatment could reduce more than 99% of the particle number (PN) and 98% of the particle mass (PM). Further reductions in the PN and PM occurred with a higher CDPF catalyst loading. The DOC had a better reduction effect on the nucleation particles than the accumulation ones, but the trend reversed with the CDPF. The DOC shifted the particle size distribution (PSD) to larger particles with an accumulation particle proportion increasing from 13% to 20%, and the geometric mean diameter (GMD) increased from 18.2 to 26.0 nm. The trend reversed with the CDPF and the accumulation particle proportion declined to less than 10%. A lower catalyst loading on the CDPF led to a higher proportion of nucleation particles and a smaller GMD.

ABSTRACT

Influenza B virus circulates yearly with lower activity than that of influenza A virus in China. During winter 2017 to 2018, a sharp surge of influenza activity dominated by type B/Yamagata lineage virus caused unprecedented medical burden in Beijing. This research aimed to understand the underlying mechanism for this circulation and prepare for epidemics in the future. Sera samples collected from the patients in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 flu seasons were tested for profiling hemagglutinin inhibition (HI) antibodies against both prevailing Victoria and Yamagata lineages of type B influenza viruses. It showed that the seroprevalence against both lineages of the virus in 2017-2018 winter was higher than that in 2016-2017, while no difference of the seroprevalence was observed between the two viruses. Meanwhile, significant elevated geometric mean titer (GMT) against both lineages of influenza B viruses was found in the specimens collected during 2017-2018 flu season than that from 2016 to 2017, suggesting the viruses might undergo antigenic changes. These results also suggested that lower GMT against both type B variants in 2016-2017 might serve as an immunological niche for the dominating of B/Yamagata virus in China during 2017-2018 winter season. Our findings have implication that there was a significantly elevation of HI antibodies to influenza viruses B in 2017-2018 than in 2016-2017. On the other hand, the low level of HI antibodies to both B/Y and B/V in 2016-2017 could contribute to the severe B/Y epidemic in 2017-2018 to some extent.

ABSTRACT

Background: Heterologous prime-boost SARS-CoV-2 vaccination is a widely accepted strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic, which generated a superior immune response than homologous vaccination strategy. Objective: To describe immunogenicity of heterologous prime-boost vaccination with inactivated vaccine, CoronaVac, followed by BNT162b2 and 5-month booster dose with BNT162b2 in healthy Thai adolescents. Methods: Adolescents aged 12-18 years were randomized 1:1:1:1 to receive CoronaVac (SV) followed by BNT162b2 (PZ) 30 or 20 µg at either 3- or 6-week interval (SV3w/PZ30µg, SV3w/PZ20µg, SV6w/PZ30µg or SV6w/PZ20µg). During the Omicron-predominant period, participants were offered a BNT162b2 booster dose 30, 15, or 10 µg. Immunogenicity was determined using IgG antibody against spike-receptor-binding domain of wild type(anti-S-RBD IgG) and surrogate virus neutralization test(sVNT) against Delta variant at 14 days and 5 months after the 2nd dose. Neutralization tests(sVNT and pseudovirus neutralization test; pVNT) against Omicron strain were tested pre- and 14 days post-booster dose. Results: In October 2021, 76 adolescents with a median age of 14.3 years (IQR 12.7-16.0) were enrolled: 20 in SV3w/PZ30µg; 17 in SV3w/PZ20µg; 20 in SV6w/PZ30µg; 19 in SV6w/PZ20µg. At day 14, the geometric mean(GM) of anti-S-RBD IgG in SV3w/PZ30µg was 4713 (95 %CI 4127-5382) binding-antibody unit (BAU)/ml, while geometric mean ratio(GMR) was 1.28 (1.09-1.51) in SV6w/PZ30µg. The GMs of sVNT against Delta variants at day 14 among participants in SV3w/PZ30µg and SV6wk/PZ30µg arm were 95.3 % and 99.7 %inhibition, respectively. At 5 months, GMs of sVNT against Delta variants in SV3w/PZ30µg were significantly declined to 47.8 % but remained at 89.0 % inhibition among SV6w/PZ30µg arm. In April 2022, 52 adolescents received a BNT162b2 booster dose. Proportion of participants with sVNT against Omicron strain > 80 %inhibition was significantly increased from 3.8 % pre-booster to 67 % post-booster. Proportion of participants with pVNT ID50 > 185 was 42 % at 14 days post 2nd dose and 88 % post booster, respectively. Conclusions: Heterologous prime-boost vaccination with CoronaVac followed by BNT162b2 induced high neutralizing titer against SARS-CoV-2 Delta strain. After 5-month interval, booster with BNT162b2 induced high neutralizing titer against Omicron strain.Thai Clinical Trials Registry (thaiclinicaltrials.org): TCTR20210923012.
