ABSTRACT

Solanum capsicoides, commonly known as red soda apple, is a little-studied species with phytotherapeutic characteristics of interest to the pharmaceutical industry. However, little is known about its agronomic characteristics. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect of light, different temperatures, and substrates on the germination of S. capsicoides seeds. The study consisted of two experiments: Experiment I - Germination of S. capsicoides seeds under different wavelengths. The seeds were kept on Petri dishes covered with Germitest™ paper moistened with distilled water and exposed to the monochromatic, red, far-red, and dark wavelengths. The experiment was performed in a completely randomized design with four replications of 25 seeds. Experiment II - Germination of S. capsicoides seeds on different substrates and at different temperatures. The seeds were distributed according to six substrates: paper roll, on paper, between sand, on sand, on soil + sand + manure, and between soil + sand + manure. The seeds were also subjected to the constant temperatures of 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C and the alternate temperatures of 20-30, 20-35, 25-30, and 25-35 °C, characterizing a 6 x 8 factorial arrangement. Germination rate, germination speed index, and mean germination time were evaluated. Red soda apple seeds are classified as positive photoblastic, with the highest germination rate occurring at the temperature of 20-35 °C combined with on paper, paper roll, on sand, and between sand substrates.

ABSTRACT

Flooding is one of the most hazardous natural disasters and a major stress constraint to rice production throughout the world, which results in huge economic losses. The frequency and duration of flooding is predicted to increase in near future as a result of global climate change. Breeding of flooding tolerance in rice is a challenging task because of the complexity of the component traits, screening technique, environmental factors and genetic interactions. A great progress has been made during last two decades to find out the flooding tolerance mechanism in rice. An important breakthrough in submergence research was achieved by the identification of major quantitative trait locus (QTL) SUB1 in rice chromosomes that acts as the primary contributor for tolerance. This enabled the use of marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC) to transfer SUB1 QTL into popular varieties which showed yield advantages in flood prone areas. However, SUB1 varieties are not always tolerant to stagnant flooding and flooding during germination stage. So, gene pyramiding approach can be used by combining several important traits to develop new breeding rice lines that confer tolerances to different types of flooding. This review highlights the important germplasm/genetic resources of rice to different types of flooding stress. A brief discussion on the genes and genetic mechanism in rice exhibited to different types of flooding tolerance was discussed for the development of flood tolerant rice variety. Further research on developing multiple stresses tolerant rice can be achieved by combining SUB1 with other tolerance traits/genes for wider adaptation in the rain-fed rice ecosystems.

ABSTRACT

Malting potential of two rice cultivar i.e. low (12.5%) (LR) and normal (20.2%) amylose paddy (NR) were evaluated under different germination conditions (25-40°C for 120h). Based on malting potential, 30 and 35°C germination temperatures were found suitable. Enzymes (amylolytic and α-amylase) activity increased at both temperatures for LR and NR whereas NR exhibited higher activity. NR malted rice showed higher starch degradation (64 and 74 times) when compared to LR (58 and 62 times) at 30 and 35°C respectively leading to formation of reducing sugar and lowering of viscosity. During germination of LR and NR significant morphological and structural changes were observed as evident from pin-holes and eroded surface in micrographs, decreased % crystallinity and FTIR peaks. Outcome of present study concluded that the amylose amylopectin ratio played an important role during germination and NR paddy was found more suitable for malting at 30 and 35°C.

ABSTRACT

Cumulative germination of coffee has a longitudinal behavior mathematically characterized by a sigmoidal model. In the seed germination evaluation, the study of the germination curve may contribute to better understanding of this process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the goodness of fit of Logistic and Gompertz models, with independent and first-order autoregressive errors structure, AR (1), in the description of coffee (Coffea arabica L.) line Catuai vermelho IAC 99 germination, at five different potential germination. The data used were from an experiment conducted in 2011 at the Seed Analysis Laboratory of the Federal University of Lavras. The Logistic and Gompertz nonlinear models were appropriately adjusted to the percentage germination data. The Gompertz model with first-order autoregressive errors structure was the best to describe the germination process.
