ABSTRACT

This article explores an example of person-centred care: the work of so-called renal care coordinators. The empirical basis of the article consists of qualitative interviews with renal care coordinators, alongside participant observations of their patient interactions. During the analyses of the empirical material, I found that that one of the coordinators' most fundamental ambitions is to get to know who the patient is. This is also a central tenet of person-centred care. The aim of the article is not only to argue for the plausibility of this tenet, but also, and more importantly, to highlight and explore its implications in the context of healthcare, through the example of renal care coordination. By drawing on the philosophy of Hannah Arendt, the article shows that the disclosure of who the patient is that takes place in person-centred care requires speech and action, which are modes of human activity that initiate processes characterized by unpredictability, uncertainty, and irreversibility. This unpredictability, uncertainty, and irreversibility, found to be inherent in person-centred care, is then discussed in relation to the pursuit of certainty characterizing contemporary evidence-based medicine. At the end of the article the conclusion is drawn that, if healthcare is to be person-centred, it must find ways of accommodating the contradictory pursuits of certainty and uncertainty found in evidence-based medicine and person-centred care respectively.

ABSTRACT

This article examines a population-based opportunistic screening practice for cognitive impairment that takes place at a hospital in Sweden. At the hospital, there is a routine in place that stipulates that all patients over the age of 65 who are admitted to the ward will be offered testing for cognitive impairment, unless they have been tested within the last six months or have been diagnosed with any form of cognitive impairment. However, our analysis shows that this routine is not universally and mechanically applied. Rather, the health care professionals have developed and use an ethico-political judgment, concerning, for example, whom to test, when to offer the tests, and how to explain and perform them. This article explores the role and practice of this form of judgment, emphasising its political and ethical nature. The analysis is based on qualitative interviews with professionals and patients, and draws on the theories of Aristotle and Hannah Arendt.

ABSTRACT

This article is a critique of the notion of post-truth. Drawing on the work of Hannah Arendt, I argue that the epistemological crisis suggested by the notion of post-truth is epiphenomenal to a more general crisis of authority, a crisis that is poorly understood in the literature. I also argue that revisiting Arendt's account of authority can help us elucidate the vexed dynamics of authority in modern society, as well as the dynamics behind its current crisis. The post-truth situation is a loss of authority that is political before it presents as epistemological. Effectively addressing this situation, I conclude, is a much more challenging and complex proposition than what is suggested in the literature on post-truth.

O presente artigo propõe tematizar as abordagens dos pensadores Hannah Arendt e Michel Foucault sobre a origem da politicidade e os pressupostos historiográficos jacentes em suas respectivas teorias políticas (ventiladas pela análise preambular do paradigma do nascimento e da vida). Nesse afã, procura relacionar os diferentes enfoques sugeridos com certas possibilidades de resistência política aventadas pelos mesmos autores. Em consequência, resulta avistar condições de possibilidade para (re) pensar a problemática do poder político pela maneira como se pensa a temática da história e as possíveis temporalidades inerentes a ela. Importa, em outras palavras, enxergar qual a relação que uma determinada noção histórica de origem política tem com a maneira de se pensar determinados fenômenos jurídico-políticos e seus modos de agenciamento. This article seeks to thematicize the approaches of the thinkers Hannah Arendt and Michel Foucault to the origin of politicalness and the historiographic assumptions underlying their respective political theories (vented by a prefatory analysis of the paradigm of birth and life). We seek to relate the different approaches with the certain possibilities of political resistance put forward by these authors, identifying opportunities to (re)think the problem of political power based on ways of thinking about history and its inherent temporalities. In other words, it is important to see the relationship between a given historical notion of political origin and the way of thinking about given legal-political phenomena and their modes of agency. El presente artículo propone plantear como temas los abordajes de los pensadores Hannah Arendt y Michel Foucault sobre el origen de la politicidad y las presuposiciones historiográficas yacentes en sus respectivas teorías políticas (mostradas a partir del análisis previo del paradigma del nacimiento y de la vida). En ese afán, se busca relacionar los diferentes enfoques sugeridos con ciertas posibilidades de resistencia política para (re)pensar la problemática del poder político a partir de la manera como se piensa la temática de la historia y las posibles temporalidades inherentes a ella; lo que importa, en otras palabras, el ver cuál es la relación que una determinada noción histórica de origen político tiene con la manera de pensar determinados fenómenos jurídico-políticos y sus modos de gestión. ABSTRACT

Um dos grandes desafios do campo da Saúde Coletiva tem sido encontrar estratégias de realização de estudos qualitativos sem furtar-se do rigor metodológico. A utilização de abordagens narrativas como ferramenta de pesquisa se constituiu como uma aposta para auxiliar na compreensão da experiência humana frente aos complexos processos de saúde-adoecimento. Neste artigo, assumimos o desafio de aproximar o pensamento filosófico de Hannah Arendt ao campo da Saúde Coletiva, refletindo sobre a formação em Saúde e tendo como base a ideia da pluralidade humana. No fim, abriremos chaves para a concepção arendtiana de "narrativa" que pode servir, ao mesmo tempo, como referencial epistemológico e metodológico para pesquisa qualitativa em Saúde Coletiva, em especial, sobre processos formativos em Saúde. Identifying qualitative methods that ensure methodological rigor is a major challenge in the field of public health. The use of narrative approaches as a research tool can help understand human experience in the face of complex health and disease processes. This article applies the philosophical thinking of Hannah Arendt to the field of public health, reflecting on health education and training based on the idea of human plurality. We provide insights into the Arendtian concept of "narrative", which can also serve as an epistemological and methodological frame of reference for qualitative research in the field of public health, especially for studies investigating health education and training. Uno de los grandes desafíos del campo de la Salud Colectiva ha sido encontrar estrategias de realización de estudios cualitativos, sin dejar de lado el rigor metodológico. La utilización de abordajes narrativos como herramienta de investigación se constituyó como una apuesta para auxiliar en la comprensión de la experiencia humana frente a los complejos procesos de salud-enfermedad. En este artículo asumimos el desafío de aproximar el pensamiento filosófico de Hannah Arendt al campo de la Salud Colectiva, reflexionando sobre la formación en salud y teniendo como base la idea de la pluralidad humana. Al final, abriremos claves para la concepción arendtiana de "narrativa" que puede servir, al mismo tiempo, como factor de referencia epistemológico y metodológico para la investigación cualitativa en Salud Colectiva, en especial sobre procesos formativos en salud. ABSTRACT

O presente trabalho, a partir da interface Educação e Psicanálise, em interlocução com alguns pressupostos filosóficos, sobretudo no que concerne às teorizações de Hannah Arendt e Gert Biesta, pretende discutir algumas hipóteses acerca da atual primazia da aprendizagem e do suposto protagonismo do aluno, com o consequente apagamento do lugar do professor e do ensino. Com o reducionismo do direito constitucional à educação em direito à aprendizagem, sob a influência de organizações internacionais, como a OCDE, marcadas por uma lógica neoliberal, algumas políticas públicas obedecem à lógica de eficiência do mundo empresarial. Com metas mensuráveis, focadas em resultados, a complexidade do fenômeno educativo se reduz à performance e ao desempenho. Nessa perspectiva, quaisquer percalços na empreitada educativa são entendidos como um problema de gestão. Entretanto, como uma tarefa eminentemente humana, a Educação convive, paradoxalmente, com a impossibilidade de sua realização, visto que nunca alcança a totalidade da sua intenção, sempre não-toda. A tensão estrutural relativa ao enigmático (des)encontro entre o novo e o instituído obriga a educação a lidar continuamente com o mal-estar. Defende-se que a educação é um bem comum que se efetiva em um campo eminentemente relacional e, portanto, tenso, imprevisível, artesanal, avesso a determinações generalistas e, seguindo a tradição freudiana, impossível.


This work, based on the interface Education and Psychoanalysis, in dialogue with some philosophical assumptions, especially with regard to the theories of Hannah Arendt and Gert Biesta, intends to discuss some hypotheses about the current primacy of learning and the supposed role of the student, with the consequent deletion of the place of the teacher and teaching. With the reduction of the constitutional right to education in the right to learning, under the influence of international organizations, such as the OECD, marked by a neoliberal logic, some public policies obey the logic of efficiency in the business world. With measurable goals, focused on results, the complexity of the educational phenomenon is reduced to performance. In this perspective, any obstacles in the educational endeavor are understood as a management problem. However, as an eminently human task, Education lives, paradoxically, with the impossibility of its realization, since it never reaches the totality of its intention, always not-all. The structural tension related to the enigmatic (dis) encounter between the new and the instituted forces education to continually deal with malaise. It is argued that education is a common good that takes place in an eminently relational field and, therefore, tense, unpredictable, artisanal, averse to generalist determinations and, following Freudian tradition, impossible.


El presente trabajo, basado en la interfaz Educación y Psicoanálisis, en diálogo con algunos supuestos filosóficos, especialmente en lo que respecta a las teorías de Hannah Arendt y Gert Biesta, pretende discutir algunas hipótesis sobre la primacía actual del aprendizaje y el supuesto protagonismo del alumno, con la consecuente supresión del lugar del profesor y la docencia. Con la reducción del derecho constitucional a la educación en el derecho al aprendizaje, bajo la influencia de organismos internacionales, como la OCDE, marcada por una lógica neoliberal, algunas políticas públicas obedecen a la lógica de la eficiencia del mundo empresarial. Con metas medibles, enfocadas a resultados, la complejidad del fenómeno educativo se reduce a desempeño. En esta perspectiva, cualquier obstáculo en el quehacer educativo se entiende como un problema de gestión. Sin embargo, como tarea eminentemente humana, la Educación vive, paradójicamente, con la imposibilidad de su realización, ya que nunca alcanza la totalidad de su intención, siempre no-toda. La tensión estructural relacionada con el enigmático (des)encuentro entre lo nuevo y lo instituido obliga a la educación a lidiar continuamente con el malestar. Se argumenta que la educación es un bien común que se desarrolla en un campo eminentemente relacional y, por tanto, tenso, impredecible, artesanal, contrario a las determinaciones generalistas y, siguiendo la tradición freudiana, imposible.

Este artigo propõe-se a refletir sobre possíveis entrelaçamentos da prática de danças com a política na interface com certas cosmovisões. Situando-se na área da Psicologia Social, a partir de uma abordagem crítica, discute-se a relação da dança com os paradigmas da ciência, a saber, paradigmas liberal capitalista, coletivista- totalitário e comunitário-solidário. Especificamente, sob o referencial de noção de política de Hannah Arendt, enfocaram-se as danças circulares como potênciapolítica. Conclui-se que as experiências das danças circulares movimentam possibilidades de visões de mundo, inventando formas de vivenciar a política, as danças e o mundo, uma vez que a política proposta por Arendt é produzida em conjunto, na pluralidade.


This article proposes to reflect on possible interlacing of the practice of dances with the politics in the interface with certain worldviews. Situated in the area of Social Psychology, from a critical approach, it discusses the relation between dance and science paradigms as well as capitalist liberal, collectivist-totalitarian and communitary-solidary paradigms. Specifically with Hannah Arendt's notion of politics, the article focused on circular dances as a political power. Once the politics proposed by Hannah Arendt is jointly produced in plurality, it is concluded that the experiences of circular dances form possibilities of worldviews by inventing ways of experiencing politics, dances and the world.


Este artículo se propone reflexionar sobre posibles entrelazamientos de la práctica de danzas con la política en la interfaz con ciertas cosmovisiones. Situándose en el área de la Psicología Social, a partir de un enfoque crítico, se discute la relación de la danza con los paradigmas de la ciencia: paradigmas liberal capitalista, colectivista- totalitario y comunitario-solidario. Específicamente, bajo el referencial de noción de política de Hannah Arendt, se enfocó las danzas circulares como potencia política. Se concluye que las experiencias de las danzas circulares mueven posibilidades de visiones de mundo, inventando formas de vivir la política, las danzas y el mundo, una vez que la política propuesta por Arendt se produce en conjunto, en la pluralidad.


Cet article présente quelques remarques sur l'éventuelle imbrication de la pratique de la danse avec de la politique et des interfaces avec certaines visions du monde (visions du cosmos). À partir des études de la psychologie sociale dans une approche critique, on discute la relation entre la danse et les paradigmes de la science, à savoir le paradigme capitaliste libéral, le collectiviste-totalitaire et le communautaire-solidaire. De façon plus précise, l'article prend la notion de politique d'Hannah Arendt pour analyser les danses circulaires comme des potentielles politiques. On défend que les expériences des danses circulaires mettent en mouvement les possibilités de visions du monde et créent des façons de vivre ensemble de la politique, les danses et les mondes, compte tenu que la politique proposée par Arendt est produite toujours ensemble, dans sa propre pluralité.

ABSTRACT

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an innovative educational approach that dates back to the 1960s. However, the twenty-first century goal of sustainable education poses a challenge to PBL, especially as it relates to isolation. Here we discuss the underlying issue of isolation in three respects. First, the information-processing model of PBL depends on generalized skills, whereas real life problem-solving skills involve context-bound cognitive processes. Second, in all models of PBL, the focus on knowledge acquisition for a specific problem improves performance but separates education from the world at large. Third, the existing culture of measurement strengthens the aforementioned isolating effects. In response, we introduce a conceptual approach based on Hannah Arendt's technical notion of 'world'. We make suggestions to meet the criteria of sustainable education by reconnecting PBL to our shared world, and emphasizing a responsibility for this shared world.

Interest in the political relevance of the emotions is growing rapidly. In light of this, Hannah Arendt's claim that the emotions are apolitical has come under renewed fire. But many critics have misunderstood her views on the relationship between individuals, emotions and the political. This paper addresses this issue by reconstructing the conceptual framework through which Arendt understands the emotions. Arendt often describes the heart - where the emotions reside - as a place of darkness. I begin by tracing this metaphor through her work to demonstrate that it is meant to convey the inherently uncertain nature of emotions rather than a devaluation of them. I proceed to challenge the notion that Arendt adopts the Enlightenment dichotomy between reason and emotion. In fact, she rejects both as a basis for politics. However, she does identify some constructive roles for the emotions. I argue that fear is intrinsically connected to courage - the principal political virtue - in Arendt's philosophy. In light of my discussion, I then reinterpret the role of compassion and pity in On Revolution, concluding that Arendt's insights can help us avoid the potential pitfalls of the contemporary project to recuperate the emotions in politics.

ABSTRACT

Filamentous fungi are fascinating microorganisms. One of the reasons why it is so worthwhile to take a closer look at them is their capacity to produce secondary metabolites. Some of these substances have the potential to be of great use for mankind, such as it was the case with penicillin and its discovery in 1928. Almost a century later, the situation in healthcare could possibly turn back to the state before the development of the first antibiotics. Due to an overuse of antibiotics we are facing a surge of multiresistant bacteria that are not inhibited by any of the currently known drugs. That was part of the background why a European research project was launched in October 2013, titled "Quantitative Biology for Fungal Secondary Metabolite Producers", or "QuantFung". Fifteen young scientists embarked on a new phase in their career, moving to new work environments within Europe and dedicating their work lives intensively to the quest for useful secondary metabolites. After 4 years, the QuantFung project concluded in October this year. In this commentary, we aim to convey what it means to work in this field of fungal biotechnology and how important it is to improve the efficiency of the research therein. We introduce five out of the fifteen fellows at length and let them have their say about the adventure of science, euphoric moments, prospects and doubts. We also raise questions about the current state of research in academia, something the QuantFung fellows experienced first-hand. Being a scientist often goes beyond earning money to make one's living. This is why we also reflect on aspects of the meaning of work in our western society, where production for profit's sake is a main driver. For that we refer to one of the most distinguished thinkers of the twentieth century, to Hannah Arendt.

This article presents considerations concerning the relationship between the self and the world, or between ethics and politics, in Hannah Arendt’s theory. The purpose is to analyze the author’s statement that the educator would undertake responsibility for the world by presenting it to the child. The hypothesis posed here is that education, this act of engagement with the world, can be sustained as an articulation between politics and ethics in Hannah Arendt’s theory.

ABSTRACT

One of the most important phenomena in the intellectual history of the 20th century was the exodus of the European mind, the emigration of persons, ideas, techniques, and institutions in the vast areas of social, human, and natural sciences, as well as in literature and the visual arts. Among these exiled intellectuals, psychoanalysts formed a special group. This paper examines the major lines of the emigration of psychoanalysts from the countries of issue to the countries of reception. It focuses, in particular on Hungarian analysts and analytic candidates who left their country of birth in two waves, first after the failure of revolutions in 1918/19 for Berlin, and then after 1938, to escape the Nazis. The paper comments on the existential situation of émigré psychoanalysts in light of Hannah Arendt's writings on refugees.

A reflexão, junto à classe trabalhadora, sobre questões relacionadas à saúde no ambiente de trabalho, visando à criticidade e às ações que resultem no enfrentamento de seus problemas é um importante instrumento de mudança da realidade. O objetivo desta pesquisa exploratória é identificar elementos pertinentes aos conceitos arendtianos (labor, trabalho e ação) presentes no discurso de trabalhadores do setor de transportes participantes de um projeto de extensão universitária. A abordagem é qualitativa e a metodologia consiste em relato autobiográfico. As histórias dos trabalhadores foram gravadas em DVD e posteriormente transcritas. Para a análise, optou-se pela definição de categorias a priori (labor, trabalho e ação), uma vez que o marco teórico era a obra de Hannah Arendt. Como resultado, foram encontrados: insegurança alimentar, doenças crônicas não transmissíveis relacionadas ao conceito de labor; riscos ergonômicos e distúrbios psíquicos relacionados ao trabalho; e participação coletiva e inclusão digital como elementos da ação. Concluiu-se que conhecer, compreender e discutir essas três categorias para o incremento da reflexão acerca da saúde do trabalhador pode ser importante, uma vez que todas elas foram expressas nos relatos de vida, mostrando sua permanência e relevância na história de todos e de cada um...


Reflection, along with the working class, on health-related issues at the workplace, aiming at criticality and actions that result in facing its problems, is a significant instrument to change reality. The purpose of this exploratory research is identifying relevant elements with regard to Arendt’s concepts (labor, work, and action) observed in the discourse of workers from the transportation sector participating in a university outreach project. The approach is qualitative and the methodology is autobiographical account. Workers’ histories were recorded on DVD and then transcribed. For the analysis, we chose to define a priori categories (labor, work, and action), since the theoretical framework was Hannah Arendt’s work. As a result, we found: food insecurity, chronic noncommunicable diseases related to the concept of labor; ergonomic hazards and psychic disorders related to work; and collective participation and digital inclusion as elements of action. It was concluded that knowing, understanding, and discussing these three categories in order to increase the reflection on occupational health may be important, since all of them were expressed in life accounts, showing their permanence and relevance in the history of everybody and each one...

We attempt to brisk up traditional ethical thinking against the background of urgent questions concerning the Internet. By revisiting the perspective of cosmopolitanism that was inspired by Kant’s thesis of a universal rationality, reflecting upon Hanna Arendt’s critical analysis of moral claims and political outcome, and building on Capurro’s “net ethics”, we introduce a perspective aiming at an intercultural understanding that might guide our actions in global politics in times of the so called digital era. The article advances the idea by Hannah Arendt that a concrete example as such has moral relevance and therefore makes a case to foster this approach using “best practices” as explicit examples to follow.


Este artículo deriva de un proyecto de investigación mayor sobre Internet, Constitucionalismo Global y Ética. En él intentamos avivar el pensamiento ético tradicional a la luz de preguntas urgentes relativas a Internet. Pasamos revista a la perspectiva del cosmopolitismo, reflexionando sobre el análisis crítico de aseveraciones morales y los resultados politicos, y, finalmente, construyendo sobre la “net ethics” de Capurro, presentamos una perspectiva que apunta a un entendimiento intercultural capaz de guiar nuestras acciones en la política global en tiempos de la denominada “era digital”. El artículo utiliza de idea de Hannah Arendt que afirma que un ejemplo concreto, como tal, tiene relevancia moral y, por ende, propone este enfoque relativo a las “mejores prácticas” como un ejemplo explícito a seguir.

O objetivo deste artigo é relatar uma pesquisa sobre as histórias de vida e as memórias dos habitantes de um pequeno povoado, situado na região leste de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Utilizando a "história oral" como estratégia metodológica e tendo como referência teórica o pensamento de Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin e Mikhail Bakhtin, os conceitos história, memória e narrativa são aqui analisados a partir das práticas discursivas entre a pesquisadora e os habitantes do Córrego dos Januários. Os resultados deste trabalho contribuem para a compreensão da ação e do discurso dos homens como condição do exercício da ética e da política na vida prática e, consequentemente, colocam em destaque a importância da experiência singular e a presença única de cada pessoa no mundo. A revelação da pergunta "quem és?", apresentada por Hanna Arendt em sua obra A condição humana, é aqui analisada a partir dos relatos das histórias de vida dos sujeitos envolvidos.


The purpose of this article is reporting a research on stories of the life and memories of the inhabitants of a small village in the east region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Using as methodological strategy the "oral story-telling", and as theoretical references the works and studies by Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin and Mikhail Bakhtin, the concepts history, memory and narrative are here analyzed based on the discursive practices between the researcher and the inhabitants of Córrego dos Januários. The results of this work contribute to the comprehension of action and discourse of men as a condition to the exercise of ethics and politics in practical life and, consequently, bring out the importance of singular experience and the unique presence of each and every person in the world. The disclosure of the question "Who are you", introduced by Hannah Arendt in her work The Human Condition, is here analyzed from the point of view of the life stories of the individuals involved.

ABSTRACT

O presente artigo analisa as categorias de corpo e vida no pensamento de Hannah Arendt no contexto da crítica que a autora faz ao cientificismo moderno. Partindo da apresentação de alguns aspectos centrais da crítica arendtiana, passa-se a discutir em que medida essa crítica pode ser útil na discussão contemporânea acerca do biologismo e do mundo biotecnológico. Finalmente, tenta-se mostrar a radicalidade do pensamento da autora sobre o corpo e vida na sua relação com o conceito de corpo e vida da medicina tradicional chinesa.


This paper analyzes the categories of body and life in Hannah Arendt's thought in the context of criticism that the author makes of modern scientific approach. From the presentation of some core aspects of Arendt's criticism, it discusses to what extent this criticism can be useful in contemporary discussion of biological and biotechnological world. Finally, it tries to show the radical thinking of the author about life in the body and its relationship to the concept of body and life of traditional Chinese medicine.
