ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the HerbValo method in comparison to conventional field measurement techniques as a tool for estimating the herbage utilization and dry matter (DM) intake by grazing dairy cows under subtropical conditions. It was carried out during 18 months in a commercial farm of Southern Brazil. The herbage utilization was estimated monthly in two to four randomly selected paddocks (total n = 40) using the rising-plate meter or the double-sampling technique. In parallel, the herbage utilization was estimated by the HerbValo method, which is based on simple descriptions of the herd, supplements, pasture and grazing management. Values of herbage utilization estimated by field techniques were linearly (P < 0.01) related to those estimated by HerbValo, with no effect of pasture type (tropical vs. temperate) on the origin or on the slope of the regression (slope = 0.97; origin = -0.1; R2 = 0.81; rsd = 0.17 t DM/ha). At cow × day level, values of herbage intake estimated by field techniques were also linearly related to those estimated by HerbValo (P < 0.01; R2 = 0.82; rsd = 1.30 kg DM/cow/day). A negative linear relationship (P < 0.01) between herbage and supplement intake was obtained for both field (slope = -1.06; R2 = 0.72; rsd = 1.64) and HerbValo (slope = -0.92; R2 = 0.82; rsd = 1.08) approaches. Herbage utilization and intake by a dairy herd in a subtropical grazing-based system can be reliably estimated by the HerbValo method with the advantage of not requiring direct field pasture measurements.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the structure of vegetation and the performance of rearing heifers and cull cows in Campos grasslands managed in the rotational stocking method with first-last stocking in the spring-summer period. The treatments were different rest intervals of 402 and 252 degrees-day, which favor the growth of different functional groups of grasses. A completely randomized block design with two treatments and three repetitions was used. The test animals were 24 heifers in the "first" group and 24 cows in the "last" group. In the stratum between tussock grasses, sward heights greater than 0.16 m were predominant in both treatments, it was 1.3 times more frequent in the 402 DD treatment compared to the 252 DD treatment. Average stocking rate was 22% higher in the 252 DD treatment. Although, no differences were observed for the average daily gain of heifers (0.227 kg.day-1) and cows (0.336 kg.day-1) between treatments, the weight gain per area in the experimental period was greater in the 252 DD treatment. Despite the management system with first and last stoking does not provide significant changes in the structure of the pasture, it allowed to achieve satisfactory performance goals in areas of Campos grassland.

ABSTRACT

During the first hours after the allocation of a grazing strip (first grazing session, GS), dairy cows eat most of the daily dry matter (DM) available. There are few studies that analyze how the grazing-down process changes the characteristics of the pasture during the first GS. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of two pre-grazing herbage masses (HM; medium herbage mass (MHM) and high herbage mass (HHM) on the DM disappearance, grazing behavior of dairy cows, and the residual nutritive value of a pasture during the first GS. Two groups of twelve dairy cows were used to evaluate the grazing-down process, during a period of 62 days. The pre-grazing HM modified the bite rate, bite mass, and dry matter intake during the first GS. The pre-grazing HM affected the process of herbage disappearance of the pasture, especially during the first 60 min of the GS. The nutrient selection differential for acid detergent fiber was greater for HHM compared with MHM (0.93 vs. 0.86). In conclusion, pre-grazing HM affects the structural characteristics and the residual nutritive value of the pasture. The grazing process in the first GS was modified by the HM, affecting the defoliation and the DM disappearance rate of the pasture.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the pasture performance of different cultivars of perennial ryegrass, two "high sugar" and two standard cultivars, under two contrasting agronomic managements (aimed at either decreasing or increasing water soluble carbohydrates concentration), and their effects on the grazing preference of dairy cows. Eight treatments arising from the factorial combination of four cultivars and two managements were randomly applied to 31-m2 plots in three blocks. Pasture dry matter production and growth rate were measured for one year. Three grazing assessments were performed to establish the grazing preferences of six dairy cows in spring, summer and autumn. High sugar cultivars produced less dry matter per hectare than the standard cultivars. Cows consumed more grass and harvested a greater proportion of the pasture under the agronomic management aimed at decreasing sugar concentration, i.e., with a greater nitrogen fertilization rate and under a more frequent defoliation regime, which could be explained by the greater crude protein concentration achieved under this management. The results suggest that the genetic selection for greater levels of sugars was at the expense of herbage yield, and that cows preferred to graze herbage with a greater crude protein level instead of a greater sugar concentration.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the hypothesis that mixed sequential grazing of dairy cows and breeding ewes is beneficial. During the seasons of spring-summer 2013 and autumn-winter 2013-2014, 12 (spring-summer) and 16 (autumn-winter) Holstein Friesian cows and 24 gestating (spring-summer) and lactating (autumn-winter) Pelibuey ewes grazed on six (spring-summer) and nine (autumn-winter) paddocks of alfalfa and orchard grass mixed pastures. The treatments "single species cow grazing" (CowG) and "mixed sequential grazing with ewes as followers of cows" (MixG) were evaluated, under a completely randomized design with two replicates per paddock. Herbage mass on offer (HO) and residual herbage mass (RH) were estimated by cutting samples. The estimate of herbage intake (HI) of cows was based on the use of internal and external markers; the apparent HI of ewes was calculated as the difference between HO (RH of cows) and RH. Even though HO was higher in CowG, the HI of cows was higher in MixG during spring-summer and similar in both treatments during autumn-winter, implying that in MixG the effects on the cows HI of higher alfalfa proportion and herbage accumulation rate evolving from lower residual herbage mass in the previous cycle counteracted that of a higher HO in CowG. The HI of ewes was sufficient to enable satisfactory performance as breeding ewes. Thus, the benefits of mixed sequential grazing arose from higher herbage accumulation, positive changes in botanical composition, and the achievement of sheep production without negative effects on the herbage intake of cows.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to evaluate the production and morphological components of Tanzania grass (Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania), fertilized with nitrogen at the times of the year, under intermittent grazing. Was used a randomized blocks with split plot with four replications and the treatments: zero, 150, 300 and 450 kg of N.ha-1.year-1 and seasons of the year: fall, winter and spring 2008 and summer of 2008/09. The largest accumulation of dry matter per cutting was obtained at higher N and in spring and summer. The fertilizer N, especially at high doses, provides the highest percentage of leaf and stem + sheath, but with reduction in the percentage of dead material. Regardless of N, higher percentages of leaf and smaller dead material were obtained in spring and summer. The highest percentage of stem + sheath was obtained mainly in summer and autumn. High doses of N associated with shorter intervals grazing encourage greater production of Tanzania grass under intermittent stocking.

ABSTRACT

The design experimental used was completely randomized with two replications. Three tester Nellore (Bos indicus) young bulls per pasture with N level of 100kg ha-1, and four tester Nellore young bulls per pasture of the other N levels, with 300kg initial weight grazed continuously from 10 November 2001 to 15 April 2002. Sward height levels at experimental pastures were maintaining at 60cm with adjusting of stocking rate. The herbage mass, green leaf mass, green herbage mass, and culm mass, increased linearly as the N fertilization increased. Negatively linear relationship was found between the N fertilization and leaf/culm ratio. The culm proportion increased and dead material decreased on sward structure with increased N levels applied at pasture. There were no effects of N levels on green leaf proportion at sward structure. N applications in Tanzania grass pastures change sward characteristics. The agronomic efficiency of N defined in terms of dry matter (DM) accumulation/kg of N applied decreased with the increase of N levels.

ABSTRACT

The variation in available forage mass is frequently observed in grazing experiments, conducted with fixed forage allowance. For better forage mass control, a new method is proposed to adjust stocking rate, based on forage mass and forage allowance, dry matter (DM) accumulation rate, herbage intake rate, and forage susceptible to refusal and lost parameters. This method was used in Departamento de Zootecnia, UFSM, in a pearl millet grazing experiment with different nitrogen levels (0, 150, 300, 450 and 600kg ha-1), intending to maintain a forage DM mass close to 2500kg ha-1 during the experimental period. The DM accumulation rate was evaluated every 28 days in grazing exclusion cages. The forage susceptible to be refused, evaluated in fixed quadrats, represented 33 to 57% of forage mass, being dependent on nitrogen levels and stocking rate. The used method was efficient in maintaining the intended forage mass, indicating its potential use in experiments aiming better control of the variables involved in plant-animal interface.
