ABSTRACT

Female homoeroticism in early imperial China has received minimal scholarly attention. This article purposes to investigate lesbianism in the Western Han dynasty, taking into consideration both the literary and archaeological material. I first offer a succinct rundown of the ancient terminology of male homosexuality, principally in an effort to underline the classical Chinese language's absence of a precise vocabulary to describe lesbian attachments. Next, I turn to the transmitted textual sources, analysing the two extant records of love between women in order to gauge something of the nature and permissibility of female homoerotic relationships. The final section of this essay is dedicated to mortuary objects, namely the moulded bronze phalli and other sexual training tools disentombed from Western Han gravesites. When properly contextualised, the excavated dildos can be interpreted as having been used by concubines, both within same-sex partnerships and in the course of pornographic displays staged for their master's enjoyment.

ABSTRACT

Despite the modern association of ancient Amazons and Diana's huntresses with lesbianism, scholarly accounts of these groups as they appear in ancient Greek and Roman literature have rarely adverted to any hints of homoeroticism. This article re-examines several narratives concerning Amazons and huntresses in Latin literature (including Camilla in Vergil's Aeneid and Phaedra in Seneca's eponymous tragedy) from the perspective of queer kinship and female homosociality, demonstrating the ways in which these characters subvert traditional norms of kinship and femininity, replacing patriarchal control with female sodality, often imaged as a "sister" relationship. It suggests that, even if we do not interpret these intense homosocial bonds as erotic, we can nonetheless perceive a more radical rejection of social norms that transcends genital sexuality and merits the label of "queerness", insofar as queerness can be defined as a resistance to normativity.

ABSTRACT

African American sculptor Richmond Barthé (1901-1989) conjoined issues of sexuality and race in works that foreground the aesthetic worth of Black bodies. While exposing Western figuration practices that exclude Black people from artistic visibility, Barthé also targeted the African American distaste for the explicit treatment of nudity. Barthé's androgynous sculptures have by now become the trademark of his art, but Barthésian scholarship still neglects the significance of a small group of statues, which de-emphasize the aura of same-sex desire, in order to explore the intricacies of corporeal ambisexuality. In view of his homoerotic depictions and the presence of the hermaphrodite at the core of his disruption of the sexual dichotomy, the frequent assumption that Barthé remained "closeted all his life" does not stand critical scrutiny. Instead of taking refuge in the sexual closet, Barthé debunked the man/woman binary as the foremost epistemic construct that prompts the societal need for sexual self-misrepresentations.

ABSTRACT

This article investigates the ostensibly paradoxical relationship that exists between the theme of excessive love, as suggested by the title of Abhishek Chaubey's film Dedh Ishqiya (2014), and the actual representation of it in the movie, which is not only restrained and disproportionate, but is also looked at with suspicion and contempt. It examines the logic of this seeming contradiction through the other two related themes that Chaubey's chef-d'œuvre foregrounds, namely that of intelligence and female desire. The quest for financial autonomy that the female protagonists of the movie are involved in-a necessary pre-condition for leading independent lives-is so inextricably intertwined with manipulation, dexterity, and subterfuge, that any overt expression of homoerotic female desire can only jeopardize their existing possibilities of self-aggrandizement. The heteronormative arrangements of Begum Para's palace thus constitute the elaborate mise en scène, behind which female desire is enacted through a politics of intelligence, resourcefulness, discretion, and anonymity. Through this strategic negotiation, which is also a tactical necessity, the female protagonists are not only able to con the con men in the movie, but also imagine alternative subject positions that recognize the need for both pragmatism and expediency as well as deconstructing heteropatriarchal economies of desire.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article had as its aim to investigate the ambiguity related to the (in) visibility of female homoparental experiences in the Brazilian scenario, since situations in which prejudice is revealed with cruelty are accompanied by circumstances in which women have overcome discrimination assuming their affective-sexual orientations and their project of being mothers. We interviewed four women who assume themselves as lesbians and have children. Open interviews were used as a tool to collect data. The interview analysis identified that the female homoeroticism lives a paradoxical moment in relation to the human rights of LGBT population: at the same time as the indexes of violence that these subjects have to face significantly increase – revealing the desire to make the family, marital and sexual diversities invisible –, several achievements are met and a fuzzy public debate regarding the different ways of loving and existing is happening....(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract The article is about the representations of the male homoerotic practices among users of two virtual environments: the UOL chat rooms and the social network Manhunt. We can perceive a tension between a model based on the heterosexual matrix, that aligns top to male and bottom to female and another that seeks to affirm masculinity, regardless of sexual position, trying to erase the effeminacy of whom holds the bottom position in sex. However, interviews with some of the users and personal experiences, as well as postings of the participants in which they debate the homoerotic online market, demonstrate how the classifications game is situational and oscillating: my point is that speech transit on the network and in "real" life does not allow us to plaster the categories; the performativities unfolding in the virtual world are always incomplete and open to breaks and displacements.

ABSTRACT

This paper problematizes cartography as a methodological possibility on research about sexualities. Bringing together some gender studies and queer perspectives and the cartographic thinking proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, it attempts to stress common grounds among these approaches. After an introduction that aims to approximate such strands, it presents some fieldwork notes of a research that aimed to cartography ways of stylizations of the homoeroticism in the old age among men in a bar in the city of Florianópolis (SC, Brazil). The text also emphasizes the effects of/on the researcher’s body (of affecting and being affected) during the process of inhabiting such sociability territory.

ABSTRACT

Although Sappho was revered as the greatest woman poet of all time by the Greeks, in later antiquity and the Middle Ages, her love of women was considered shameful and overshadowed her excellent reputation. She was also called a prostitute, and fictional accounts of her affairs with men further "tarnished" her reputation. Dual representations of Sappho existed within two centuries of her death. On the one hand, she was a role model for other poets to follow in their quest for fame, on the other she was the quintessential representation of female vice, which, at least by the Roman period, brought her infamy. Late antique and medieval Christian authors inherited this latter view, and vilified Sappho's sexuality, while church authorities, at least according to legend, had her works publicly burned. In the initial stages of the Renaissance, then, the humanist desire to reconnect with the pagan past had to proceed in the context of late medieval Christianity. Sappho's homoeroticism was erased, ultimately, in order that her skill could be lauded to fight misogyny. Hence, the humanists "rehabilitated" Sappho's virtue in a Christian context where same-sex love was considered an "unmentionable" vice. In order to argue that women were smart and capable, the humanists needed Sappho. She was perhaps the most famous, and most skilled, woman who had ever lived, and her example was used in an attempt to improve the lot of women in the early Renaissance.

ABSTRACT

This article seeks to understand the process of LGBT identity construction in a sample of sixteen participants. It concludes that the Pérez model is comprehensive but not exhaustive, and that LGBT identity can strengthen individual self-concept and may generate small-scale social changes.

ABSTRACT

This paper revisits narratives heard during a master's research project on experiences of homoerotism by older men. Emphasis is placed on processes of resistance and subjectivity in relation to the hegemonic models that provide the contours of old age and homosexuality. Avoiding the fatalism of abjection usually attributed to older homosexuals, it is argued that the older gay subject inhabits the border of a discursive regime which establishes, on the one hand, a field of legitimacy and; on the other hand, a zone of unintelligibility, a constitutive outside. This discursive border zone (performatized by the materiality of the body) does not necessarily constitute an abject life, but incites cracks through which desire may potentially acquire expression. In that sense, the narratives pointed out towards a possible ethics of aging, one from which subjects may lead and (re)invent life, body, and desire.

ABSTRACT

This article is about representations of body, gender and sexuality in explicitly "romantic paid love" scenes involving older men and young male prostitutes or sex workers in a gay bar in Porto Alegre, Brazil. These experiences of sociability allowed us to produce an analysis of the intersectionality between gender and age. The scenes presented here help us to understand some of the power relationships involved in forms of regulation which interweaves "marks and abilities" of the body, race, "sexual orientation", social class and masculinity, in a context of openly monetized social relations. Based on an ethnographic approach, this work indicates that, while the subjects involved in these power games have no intention of producing a critique of the rule in question, the scenes performed in these spaces of sociability help us to understand heteronormativity, as well as homonormativity as discursive regimes.
