ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: As technology continues to advance, it is important to understand how website-based tools can support quality improvement. Website-based tools refer to resources such as toolkits that users can access and use autonomously through a dedicated website. This review examined how website-based tools can support healthcare professionals with quality improvement, including the optimal processes used to develop tools and the elements of an effective tool. METHODS: A systematic search of seven databases was conducted to include articles published between January 2012 and January 2024. Articles were included if they were peer reviewed, written in English, based in health settings and reported the development or evaluation of a quality improvement website-based tool for professionals. A narrative synthesis was conducted using NVivo. Risk of bias was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. All papers were independently screened and coded by two authors using a six-phase conceptual framework by Braun and Clarke. RESULTS: Eighteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Themes identified were tool development processes, quality improvement mechanisms and barriers and facilitators to tool usage. Digitalising existing quality improvement processes (n = 7), identifying gaps in practice (n = 6), and contributing to professional development (n = 3) were common quality improvement aims. Tools were associated with reported enhancement of accuracy and efficiency in clinical tasks, improvement in adherence to guidelines, facilitation of reflective practice and provision of tailored feedback for continuous quality improvement. Common features were educational resources (n = 7) and assisting the user to assess current practices against standards/recommendations (n = 6), which supported professionals in achieving better clinical outcomes, increased professional satisfaction and streamlined workflow in various settings. Studies reported facilitators to tool usage including relevance to practice, accessibility and facilitating multidisciplinary action, making these tools practical and time-efficient for healthcare. However, barriers such as being time consuming, irrelevant to practice, difficult to use and lack of organisational engagement were reported. Almost all tools were co-developed with stakeholders. The co-design approaches varied, reflecting different levels of stakeholder engagement and adoption of co-design methodologies. It is noted that the quality of included studies was low. CONCLUSIONS: These findings offer valuable insights for future development of quality improvement website-based tools in healthcare. Recommendations include ensuring tools are co-developed with healthcare professionals, focusing on practical usability and addressing common barriers to enhance engagement and effectiveness in improving healthcare quality. Randomised controlled trials are warranted to provide objective evidence of tool efficacy. ABSTRACT

Introduction Peripheral intravenous (IV) administration sets are a source of infection that increases morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. In this quality improvement project, we aimed to enhance compliance with peripheral IV hub disinfection at anesthesia induction to follow the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) safe medication injection guidelines. Methods This study was conducted in the main operating suite of the University of Miami's principal hospital between June and October 2023. Audits of scrubbing device utilization by the anesthesiology team and focus groups were conducted before and after two educational interventions. Educational efforts focused on increasing compliance with peripheral IV disinfection using scrubbing devices.  Results Mean use per case, inferred from the number of devices dispensed, nearly doubled from 0.44 (95% CI, 0.37 to 0.59) to 0.82 (95% CI, 0.77 to 0.88) (P < 0.0001). Implications regarding steps to further enhance compliance are discussed. Conclusions Through a simple educational program, scrubbing device utilization increased significantly from baseline.

ABSTRACT

We report a rare case involving improved hearing after surgery for a jugular foramen schwannoma despite the lack of response during the preoperative auditory brainstem response (ABR) test. A left jugular foramen tumor was diagnosed in a 79-year-old man with hearing loss. No response was observed during the preoperative ABR test. However, his hearing improved after surgery using the lateral suboccipital approach. Following Gamma Knife radiation to the residual tumor post-surgery, the ABR test detected V waves. The hearing of patients with cerebellopontine angle tumors can improve even when there is no response during the preoperative ABR test.

ABSTRACT

Path planning is an crucial research area in robotics. Compared to other path planning algorithms, the Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm possesses both search and random sampling properties, and thus has more potential to generate high-quality paths that can balance the global optimum and local optimum. This paper reviews the research on RRT-based improved algorithms from 2021 to 2023, including theoretical improvements and application implementations. At the theoretical level, branching strategy improvement, sampling strategy improvement, post-processing improvement, and model-driven RRT are highlighted, at the application level, application scenarios of RRT under welding robots, assembly robots, search and rescue robots, surgical robots, free-floating space robots, and inspection robots are detailed, and finally, many challenges faced by RRT at both the theoretical and application levels are summarized. This review suggests that although RRT-based improved algorithms has advantages in large-scale scenarios, real-time performance, and uncertain environments, and some strategies that are difficult to be quantitatively described can be designed based on model-driven RRT, RRT-based improved algorithms still suffer from the problems of difficult to design the hyper-parameters and weak generalization, and in the practical application level, the reliability and accuracy of the hardware such as controllers, actuators, sensors, communication, power supply and data acquisition efficiency all pose challenges to the long-term stability of RRT in large-scale unstructured scenarios. As a part of autonomous robots, the upper limit of RRT path planning performance also depends on the robot localization and scene modeling performance, and there are still architectural and strategic choices in multi-robot collaboration, in addition to the ethics and morality that has to be faced. To address the above issues, I believe that multi-type robot collaboration, human-robot collaboration, real-time path planning, self-tuning of hyper-parameters, task- or application-scene oriented algorithms and hardware design, and path planning in highly dynamic environments are future trends.

ABSTRACT

This study provides sequence datasets of endophytic and rhizobacteria of jute using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The plant samples were first surface sterilized and DNA of the bacteria from soil and jute roots and stem was extracted using Quick-DNA™ Fungal/Bacterial Miniprep Kit. The purified DNA was amplified and subjected to polymerase chain reaction using forward and reverse primers. The PCR products were sequenced on Applied Biosystems ABI 3500XL Genetic Analyser (Applied Biosystems, ThermoFisher Scientific). The sequences were analyzed using BioEdit version 7.2.5 and then BLAST on NCBI. The identifiable bacteria include the rhizobacteria, Citrobacter fruendii RZS23 (accession number: CP024673.1), endophytic bacteria, Bacillus cereus EDR23 (accession number: LN890242.1), and Morganella morganii EDS23 (accession number: KR094121.1). The plant growth-promoting traits exhibited by these bacteria suggest their future exploration as bioinoculants.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Patients undergoing gynecologic cancer surgery at our centre are recommended up to 28 days of enoxaparin for extended post-operative thromboprophylaxis (EP). Baseline survey revealed 92% patient adherence, but highlighted negative effects on patient experience due to the injectable route of administration. We aimed to improve patient experience by reducing pain and bruising by 50%, increasing adherence by 5%, and reducing out-of-pocket cost after introducing apixaban as an oral alternative for EP. METHODS: In this interrupted time series quality improvement study, gynecologic cancer patients were offered a choice between apixaban (2.5 mg orally twice daily) or enoxaparin (40 mg subcutaneously once daily) at time of discharge. A multidisciplinary team informed project design, implementation, and evaluation. Process interventions included standardized orders, patient and care team education programs. Telephone survey at 1 and 6 weeks and chart audit informed outcome, process, and balancing measures. RESULTS: From August to October 2022, 127 consecutive patients were included. Apixaban was chosen by 84%. Survey response rate was 74%. Patients who chose apixaban reported significantly reduced pain, bruising, increased confidence with administration, and less negative impact of the medication (p < 0.0001 for all). Adherence was unchanged (92%). The proportion of patients paying less than $125 (apixaban cost threshold) increased from 45% to 91%. There was no difference in bleeding and no VTE events. CONCLUSIONS: Introduction of apixaban for EP was associated with significant improvement in patient-reported quality measures and reduced financial toxicity with no effect on adherence or balancing measures. Apixaban is the preferred anticoagulant for EP at our centre.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Timeliness of care is an important healthcare outcome measure. The objective of this study was to explore patient perspectives on the timeliness of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment at accredited breast cancer centers. METHODS: In this qualitative study, 1 hour virtual interviews were conducted with participants 18-75 years old who were diagnosed and treated for stage 0-III breast cancer at a National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers facility from 2018 to 2022. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes of participant experiences. RESULTS: Twenty-eight participants were interviewed. Two thematic domains were identified: etiologies of expedited or delayed care and the impact of delayed or expedited care on patients. Within these domains, multiple themes emerged. For etiologies of expedited or delayed care, participants discussed (1) the effect of scheduling appointments, (2) the COVID-19 pandemic, (3) dissatisfaction with the timeline for various parts of the diagnostic workup, and (4) delays related to patient factors, including socioeconomic status. For the impact of expedited or delayed care, patients discussed (1) the emotional and mental impact of waiting, (2) the importance of communication and clear expectations, and (3) the impact of electronic health portals. Patients desired each care interval (e.g., the time from mammogram to breast biopsy) to be approximately 7 days, with longer intervals sometimes preferred prior to surgery. CONCLUSION: These patient interviews identify areas of delay and provide patient-centered, actionable items to improve the timeliness of breast cancer care.

ABSTRACT

Background: Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a difficult clinicopathologic diagnosis to make and to treat. Delays in identification and appropriate treatment can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Objectives: To use electronic health alert interventions to improve provider diagnosis and management of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia through guideline-based, accurate care delivery. Methods: This quality improvement initiative developed 3 electronic health record-based interventions at our 750-bed academic medical center to improve the initial management of suspected HIT between 2018 and 2021: 1. an interruptive alert to recommend discontinuation of active heparin products when signing a heparin-platelet factor 4 test (PF4) order, 2. integrated 4T score calculation in the heparin-PF4 test order, and 3. interruptive alert suggesting not to order heparin-PF4 tests when the 4T score is <4. Changes in practice were assessed over defined time periods pre and post each intervention. Results: Intervention 1 resulted in heparin discontinuation in more patients, with 65% (191 heparin orders/293 heparin-PF4 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay tests) of cases continuing heparin prealert and only 54% (127 heparin orders/235 heparin-PF4 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay tests) postinterruptive alert (95% CI 2.3-19.9; P = .015). Intervention 2 increased appropriate heparin-PF4 test ordering from 40.4% (110/272) preintervention to 79.1% (246/311) (95% CI 30.9-46.4; P < .00001) postintervention, with inappropriate PF4 ordering defined as testing when 4T score was <4. Intervention 3 did not lead to reduction in heparin-PF4 testing in the control group (96 inappropriate orders/402 total orders, 24%) compared to the randomized alert group (56 inappropriate orders/298 total orders; 19%) (95% CI -1.2 to 11.5; P = .13). Conclusion: Implementation of unique electronic health record interventions, including both diagnostic and management interventions, led to improved guideline-based, accurate care delivery with 4T score calculation and cessation of heparin for patients with suspected HIT.

Background Trauma is regarded as randomly occurring, but patterns exist for trauma volume which are useful in staffing guidelines and resource allocation. Literature on trauma admissions volume has been centered around geographically/climatically diverse centers and has often not considered many different temporal factors at once. Additionally, studies on trauma volume and staffing centered around rural or southern Trauma 1 centers were largely absent in the literature. Based on this, a study on our Trauma 1 center was deemed appropriate. Objective The objective of this study was to determine significant trends in trauma admissions and use this information to assess current staffing. This assessment was conducted through a retrospective analysis of patients admitted to the emergency department at our center. Methodology The retrospective data analysis study was conducted using data obtained locally and then subsequently uploaded onto the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB). Patients included all trauma activations and consults to the trauma team above the age of 18. We analyzed the data by season, day, and time of admission to identify trends. Chi-square analysis was used to establish significance in comparing groups (day of the week, hour of day, and season of the year). Factors such as Injury Severity Score (ISS), Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and length of stay (hospital days) were used to determine patterns of trauma severity. Results A total of 15,418 patients (8,307 males, 7,111 females) were analyzed in the dataset. The mean ISS was 8.14, and the mean GCS was 14.22. Weekends had significantly greater trauma volume than weekdays (P < 0.05). Motor vehicle collision (MVC), motorcycle, bicycle, and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) traumas were all significantly greater in summer. Bicycle and ATV trauma were significantly lowest in winter (P < 0.05). Admissions began to rise at 7 am and peaked at 5 pm. ISS, GCS, and hospital days did not significantly differ based on all groups assessed. Variation in trauma peak time across days of the week was insignificant. Our study discovered key findings in the form of increased trauma patient volume in summer, weekends, and between the hours of 1 and 9 pm. Our project found that the current staffing presents a mismatch in terms of addressing periods of high trauma. Staffing is lower on weekends, and there are conflicting administrative tasks scheduled during peak trauma hours (1-7 pm). This could be addressed by adjusting shift schedules to align better with periods of high trauma, such as increasing the workforce on weekends and decreasing it on weekdays. During summer months, adding additional float shift staff may help to better address the peak trauma volume. Conclusions Currently, there is evidence to suggest that high trauma times correspond with times of low staffing. Based on our study, there was evidence to show that low staffing periods corresponded with high trauma times. This volume-to-staffing mismatch may contribute to underlying problems such as long wait times, overworked providers, and ED overcrowding. Future studies may choose to focus on quality differences and wait times, aiming to quantify the effect of the mismatch of resources on patient volume.

OBJECTIVES: To explore hepatitis C risk, knowledge, and stigma among individuals who inject substances in South Central Indiana. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study design was employed using a community-based participatory research approach. The community partner was a grassroots harm reduction organization. SAMPLE: Participants in this study were at least 18 years of age, current residents of Indiana, and self-identified as injection substance users (n = 179). MEASUREMENTS: The survey measured hepatitis C risk, knowledge, and stigma, as well as differences in hepatitis C risk scores among key demographic characteristics. RESULTS: Most participants identified as male (n = 106, 59%), White (n = 139, 78%), and straight (n = 143, 80%). People of color reported lower hepatitis C knowledge than White participants. Women had significantly lower hepatitis C knowledge compared with men. LGBTQ participants reported increased hepatitis C risk compared with straight participants. Increased frequency of substance use was associated with decreased stigma. Unhoused participants demonstrated significantly lower hepatitis C knowledge compared with housing-secure participants. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings increase understanding that knowledge and risk around hepatitis C are associated with demographic characteristics. Results underscore the need for tailored public health interventions to increase hepatitis C knowledge, reduce stigma, and improve testing and treatment among vulnerable populations.

ABSTRACT

KEY MESSAGE: This comprehensive review underscores the application of genome editing in plant reproductive biology, including recent advances and challenges associated with it. Genome editing (GE) is a powerful technology that has the potential to accelerate crop improvement by enabling efficient, precise, and rapid engineering of plant genomes. Over the last decade, this technology has rapidly evolved from the use of meganucleases (homing endonucleases), zinc-finger nucleases, transcription activator-like effector nucleases to the use of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein (CRISPR/Cas), which has emerged as a popular GE tool in recent times and has been extensively used in several organisms, including plants. GE has been successfully employed in several crops to improve plant reproductive traits. Improving crop reproductive traits is essential for crop yields and securing the world's food supplies. In this review, we discuss the application of GE in various aspects of plant reproductive biology, including its potential application in haploid induction, apomixis, parthenocarpy, development of male sterile lines, and the regulation of self-incompatibility. We also discuss current challenges and future prospects of this technology for crop improvement, focusing on plant reproduction.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Young people receiving cancer treatment in the South Thames Children's, Teenagers' and Young Adults' Cancer Operational Delivery Network usually receive care across two or more NHS trusts, meaning transition into adult services can be challenging. AIM: To develop a planned, co-ordinated approach to transition across the network that meets National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance recommendations for transition and the cancer service specifications. METHODS: A 2-year, nurse-led quality improvement (QI) project, using the principles of experience-based co-design. OUTCOMES: The QI project resulted in the development of six key principles of practice; refining and testing of a benchmarking tool; initiatives to facilitate first transition conversations; and the launch of an information hub. CONCLUSION: Robust QI processes, cross-network collaboration and wide stakeholder involvement required significant resource, but enabled deeper understanding of existing pathways and processes, facilitated the establishment of meaningful objectives, and enabled the testing of interventions to ensure the project outcomes met the needs of all stakeholders.

ABSTRACT

14-3-3 proteins, ubiquitously present in eukaryotic cells, are regulatory proteins involved in a plethora of cellular processes. In plants, they have been studied in the context of metabolism, development, and stress responses. Recent studies have highlighted the pivotal role of 14-3-3 proteins in regulating plant immunity. The ability of 14-3-3 proteins to modulate immune responses is primarily attributed to their function as interaction hubs, mediating protein-protein interactions and thereby regulating the activity and overall function of their binding partners. Here, we shed light on how 14-3-3 proteins contribute to plant defense mechanisms, the implications of their interactions with components of plant immunity cascades, and the potential for leveraging this knowledge for crop improvement strategies.

BACKGROUND: Beta-lactam antibiotics are widely used in the intensive care unit due to their favorable effectiveness and safety profiles. Beta-lactams given to patients with sepsis must be delivered as soon as possible after infection recognition (early), treat the suspected organism (appropriate), and at a dose that eradicates the infection (adequate). Early and appropriate antibiotic delivery occurs in >90% of patients, but less than half of patients with sepsis achieve adequate antibiotic exposure. This project aimed to address this quality gap and improve beta-lactam adequacy using the DMAIC Lean Six Sigma quality improvement framework. METHODS: A multidisciplinary steering committee was formed and completed a stakeholder analysis to define the gap in practice. An Ishikawa cause and effect (Fishbone) diagram was used to identify the root causes and an impact/effort grid facilitated prioritization of interventions. An intervention which included bundled education with the use of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM; i.e., drug level testing) was projected to have the highest impact relative to the amount of effort and selected to address beta-lactam inadequacy in the critically ill. RESULTS: The education and TDM intervention were deployed through a Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycle. In the three months after 'go-live,' 54 episodes of beta-lactam TDM occurred in 41 unique ICU patients. The primary quality metric of beta-lactam adequacy was achieved in 94% of individuals after the intervention. 94% of clinicians gauged the education provided as sufficient. The primary counterbalance of antimicrobial days of therapy, a core antimicrobial stewardship metric, was unchanged over time (favorable result; p=0.73). CONCLUSIONS: Application of the DMAIC Lean Six Sigma quality improvement framework effectively improved beta-lactam adequacy in critically ill patients. The approach taken in this quality improvement project is widely generalizable to other drugs, drug classes, or settings to increase the adequacy of drug exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Despite a demonstrated high accuracy and reported successful implementations, radiographer preliminary image evaluation (PIE) has been slow and infrequent in its rollout across Australia. A key barrier reported to hamper radiographer PIE service implementation is lack of adequate time to review radiographs and provide an accurate interpretation. This study sought to conduct a correlational analysis between radiographer imaging workload and PIE service accuracy. METHODS: A total of 45,373 exams and 1152 PIE comments evenly distributed each month from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022, were reviewed. PIE comments were assessed for consistency with the radiologist's report. The imaging workload (average exams completed per hour) was separated into three, eight-hour 'shifts' based on time of imaging. Correlational analysis was performed using linear regression models and assessed for normality using the Shapiro-Wilks test. RESULTS: The study reported no significant linear association between increasing average workload and reduced service accuracy (P = 0.136). It was however noted that when the average workload increased beyond 7 exams/hour, average service accuracy for PIE was always below 85%. CONCLUSION: This study has demonstrated that, although perceived, there is no statistically significant correlation between x-ray imaging workload and radiographer PIE service accuracy. Consideration of this correlation to be a significant barrier to participation in such a service was not reported at this site.

ABSTRACT

The authors examined the feasibility and impact of a therapist-driven outreach program on depression outcomes in a primary care clinic. Patients with a diagnosis of depression but missing a 1-year follow-up Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) screening were rescreened via telephone. Eligible patients (N=241) were contacted, and implementation rates and outcomes, along with feasibility, were assessed. Of the patients contacted, 47% indicated a depression response (reduction in PHQ-9 score of ≥50%), and 33% met remission criteria (PHQ-9 score <5). PHQ-9 scores decreased by approximately 7 points (p<0.001). This project may have helped to improve depression symptoms and remission rates for patients of the clinic and to facilitate patient reengagement with treatment.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the mechanism underlying the flavor improvement observed during fermentation of a pea protein-based beverage using Lactobacillus johnsonii NCC533. A combination of sensomics and sensoproteomics approach revealed that the fermentation process enriched or generated well-known basic taste ingredients, such as amino acids, nucleotides, organic acids, and dipeptides, besides six new taste-active peptide sequences that enhance kokumi and umami notes. The six new umami and kokumi enhancing peptides, with human recognition thresholds ranging from 0.046 to 0.555 mM, are produced through the degradation of Pisum sativum's storage protein. Our findings suggest that compounds derived from fermentation enhance umami and kokumi sensations and reduce bitterness, thus improving the overall flavor perception of pea proteins. In addition, the analysis of intraspecific variations in the proteolytic activity of L. johnsonii and the genome-peptidome correlation analysis performed in this study point at cell-wall-bound proteinases such as PrtP and PrtM as the key genes necessary to initiate the flavor improving proteolytic cascade. This study provides valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the flavor improvement of pea protein during fermentation and identifies potential future research directions. The results highlight the importance of combining fermentation and senso(proteo)mics techniques in developing tastier and more palatable plant-based protein products.

Introduction: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a substantial healthcare burden in low- and middle- income countries. "Clean Cut" is a checklist-based infection prevention and control (IPC) program intended to improve compliance to peri-operative IPC standards. We aim to study the short-term and long-term impact of its implementation in a tertiary care cancer referral center. Methods: This was a single institute, prospective interventional study. Patients undergoing elective head-neck surgical procedures were included. The "Clean Cut" program consisting of surveillance, audits, and IPC training was implemented for 6 months, after which there was no active oversight. Post-intervention (T2) and 1-year follow-up (T3) data regarding compliance to core IPC practices and SSI rates were compared with baseline (T1). Results: One hundred eighty six patients were included with 50 (26.9%), 86 (46.2%), and 50 (26.9%) patients at T1, T2, and T3, respectively. At baseline, teams complied with a mean of 3.56 of the six critical components of infection control processes which rose to 4.66 (p < 0.001) at T2, but decreased to 4.02 at T3 (p = 0.053). The SSI rate at baseline decreased significantly after Clean Cut implementation [16 (32%) vs. 12 (13.95%), p = 0.012], but returned to baseline levels after 1 year [17 (34%), p = 0.006]. Conclusion: Implementation of the "Clean Cut" program increases compliance to infection control processes and reduces SSI rates in the short term. Without continuing oversight, these rates return to baseline values after 1 year.

ABSTRACT

Twisted trunks are not uncommon in trees, but their effects on tree growth are still unclear. Among coniferous tree species, the phenomenon of trunk distortion is more prominent in Pinus yunnanensis. To expand the germplasm of genetic resources, we selected families with excellent phenotypic traits to provide material for advanced generation breeding. The progeny test containing 93 superior families (3240 trees) was used as the research material. Phenotypic measurements and estimated genetic parameters (family heritability, realistic gain and genetic gain) were performed at 9, 15, and 18 years of age, respectively. The genetic evaluation yielded the following results (1) The intra-family variance component of plant height (PH) was greater than that of the inter-family, while the inter-family variance components of other traits (diameter at breast height (DBH), crown diameter (CD), height under branches (HUB), degree of stem-straightness (DS)) were greater than that of the intra-family, indicating that there was abundant variation among families and potential for selection. (2) At half rotation period (18 years old), there was a significant correlation among the traits. The proportion of trees with twisted trunks (level 1-3 straightness) reached 48%. The DS significantly affected growth traits, among which PH and DBH were the most affected. The volume loss rate caused by twisted trunk was 18.06-56.75%, implying that trunk distortion could not be completely eliminated after an artificial selection. (3) The influence of tree shape, crown width, and trunk on volume increased, and the early-late correlation between PH, DBH and volume was extremely significant. The range of phenotypic coefficient of variation, genetic variation coefficient and family heritability of growth traits (PH, DBH, and volume) were 44.29-127.13%, 22.88-60.87%, and 0.79-0.83, respectively. (4) A total of 21 superior families were selected by the method of membership function combined with independent selection. Compared with the mid-term selection (18 years old), the accuracy of early selection (9 years old) reached 77.5%. The selected families' genetic gain and realistic gain range were 5.79-19.82% and 7.12-24.27%, respectively. This study can provide some useful reference for the breeding of coniferous species.

ABSTRACT

Genome editing is a promising technique that has been broadly utilized for basic gene function studies and trait improvements. Simultaneously, the exponential growth of computational power and big data now promote the application of machine learning for biological research. In this regard, machine learning shows great potential in the refinement of genome editing systems and crop improvement. Here, we review the advances of machine learning to genome editing optimization, with emphasis placed on editing efficiency and specificity enhancement. Additionally, we demonstrate how machine learning bridges genome editing and crop breeding, by accurate key site detection and guide RNA design. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and prospects of these two techniques in crop improvement. By integrating advanced genome editing techniques with machine learning, progress in crop breeding will be further accelerated in the future.
