ABSTRACT

Intersectionality, a theory for understanding women's health issue. Intersectionality offers the possibility of holistic analyzes to understand and act on women's health issue. It facilitates the exploration of the different dimensions of social inequalities in health, which are both at the level of institutions and of the individual experiences of people who live at the intersection of multiple dimensions of domination and power.

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of cancer can create or increase social inequalities, particularly because of its consequences on employment. The first results of a large French prospective cohort on the return to work of women after breast cancer show the importance of the support of these patients by health professionals, and in particular by nurses.

ABSTRACT

For several decades, the 1918-20 global influenza outbreak has been called "the forgotten pandemic." Although recent scholarly and public interest in the pandemic has complicated the narrative of forgetting, the label has stuck. Highlighting historical evidence of influenza's long-term impact upon survivors, family, and community in Canada, the flu stories presented here, diverse in form and content, verify that a key question in pandemic influenza history is not whether the pandemic was forgotten or remembered, but by whom, and in what ways, it has been suppressed - or foregrounded. By moving beyond the classic epidemic plot line, with beginning, middle, and end, historians can find new methodologies and evidence with which to more fully understand the influenza pandemic's unfolding intersection with colonialism, war, social inequality, and labour struggles in the 20th century.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This paper analyzes the effect of family background on earnings from labor and on returns to education in Brazil, comparing results from white and black workers. We estimate earnings equations using cross-sectional data from the 1996 and 2014 National Household Sample Survey (Pnad/IBGE); parents' education is used as a proxy for family background. Our findings show that having a university degree significantly increases labor earnings, but less so for the blacks. Although the diploma effect and the racial wage gap decreased over the 1996-2014 period, there was no decrease in the influence of family background on individuals' performance in the job market.

ABSTRACT

The health service, which came into effect in September 2018, concerns all health-care students. Nursing students were among the first to get involved in nursing fields in a variety of settings where the population could get involved in raising awareness of healthy behaviours. A group of nursing students from a school in Île-de-France attests to their involvement in this innovation.

ABSTRACT

Emergency departments play an essential role with regard to social inequalities. However, in the current context, this role is not evident in the studies carried out into this sector of activity. This is due to the lack of relevance of the indicators used, such as the waiting time, which serve the hidden objective of increasing the productivity of emergency departments.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to carry out an integrative literature review, in the light of the Political Psychology of Public Policies, regarding the existing academic production on the intersectorial dimension of Public Policies of Social Assistance with schooling. As sources of data, there are summaries of theses and dissertations from the University of São Paulo and the Pontifical Catolic University of São Paulo, Scielo and Google Academic publications. Political Psychology brings in its praxis the rescue of human dignity. The review identified the main contributions of the theme to the Public Policy area, the problematization of institutional networks and the proposal of a dialogue between two areas that are not very articulated in the actions. It is worth noting that, as unexplored possibilities, there are studies that deal with this articulation to address educational inequality in a qualitative and not only quantitative way, as well as studies that discuss the networks generated by the Capitalist State in its intimate relationship between public and private.

ABSTRACT

The presence of social inequalities in health requires a multi-faceted intervention, focusing on the social determinants as well as the provision of care and prevention strategies. Regional health agencies have important levers at their disposal, as illustrated by the example of the Île-de-France region.

ABSTRACT

The main factors of social inequalities in health lie outside the healthcare system. In a context centred on curative care, the influence of social determinants on people's health is a challenge facing nursing care and highlights the need to reinforce cross-sector action.

ABSTRACT

Inequalities in health stem from social mechanisms which for the most part operate outside the health care sector. By being aware of these inequalities and understanding them from the perspective of a gradient of resources, health professionals can intervene to improve equality in this field.

ABSTRACT

Health is dependent on the living conditions and the socioeconomic environment of populations. The healthcare system tends to underestimate these aspects and thereby maintain, and even aggravate, the resulting social inequalities in health. It is essential that this situation is improved by adopting a global and interdisciplinary vision of healthcare and its social determinants.

ABSTRACT

A study was carried out of patients with type 2 diabetes following a hospital therapeutic education programme. The results show that the transfer of self-management and adaptation competencies must take into consideration patients' social differentiation. They bring into question the assumption of the individual's autonomy. In this context, the professional position of the caregivers is essential in order to provide patients with the best support possible.

ABSTRACT

The first phase of interventional research in the health of populations is the development of its conceptual basis. Programme logic models are used to describe the way in which the results should be generated. The programme theory is used to develop intermediary objectives and to increase the chances of success of public health actions. This approach requires the coproduction of knowledge between researchers and partners. The teams can benefit from the application of evaluation to the theory in order to clarify the results obtained.

ABSTRACT

The authors propose a reflection on psychoanalytic practices under the open sky. According to this paper, those practices may enable psychoanalysts (and their psychoanalytic listening) to reach those individuals who are usually marginalized, or even ignored in their invisibility - an invisibility which arises from a social and economic system that excludes people. The authors show a relation between intolerance and the concept of abjection as they discuss the issue of intolerance. This paper emphasizes the importance of an apparatus, in the psychoanalytic institution, that puts psychoanalysts in touch with the reality in which they live.

ABSTRACT

This article analyzes socio-occupational mobility in the Brazilian urban work market in 1988 and 1996 from the perspective of success, by sex and color. Achieving success is a dimension created to describe the types of individual movements, whereby those who rise, fall, or remain in the same position can perform successful or unsuccessful movements, depending on their point of departure. The overall mobility and success rates are presented for men, women, blacks, and whites, analyzing the effects of innate characteristics (age, sex, and color), acquired traits (schooling, first occupation, and entry into the work market), and social origins (paternal and maternal schooling and paternal stratum) on the odds of achieving success.
