ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The human being in the course of evolution has changed the perception of food, leaving aside the consumption of meat and its derivatives due to ethical and moral factors, where it is known that diet has great relevance in general health, being a factor of risk for the appearance of various diseases, which is why saliva has been used as a diagnostic tool. To describe and compare the Mediterranean Diet index according to salivary pH in female dentistry students between 20 and 30 years old. Comparative cross-sectional descriptive study. Seventeen adult women selected by non-probabilistic criteria participated in the Dentistry career, who were evaluated in their Mediterranean Diet index and salivary pH. Student's T test for independent samples and Mann-Whitney U test were applied to compare characteristics between groups based on salivary pH. There are significant differences between groups for the frequency of consumption of whole grains (p = 0.026), lean meats (p = 0.021) and salivary pH (p < 0.001). There is a predominance towards low adherence to a Mediterranean diet, with significant differences in the frequency of consumption of whole grains and lean meats, the consumption of these being an indicator of oral risk determined by pH.

ABSTRACT

Due to their low friction index, hip arthroplasties with metal-metal (M-M) friction torque have been an attractive option in young patients with high functional demand, currently they have suffered a decrease in their use due to the complications of some models and physiological reactions adverse reactions related to the elevation of metal ions in the blood. Our objective is to review the patients with M-M pair operated in our centre, correlating the ion level with the position of the acetabular component and with the size of the head. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective review of 166 M-M hip prostheses operated between 2002 and 2011. Sixty five ruled out for different causes (death, loss of follow-up, no current ion control, no radiography or others), leaving a sample of 101 patients to be analysed. Follow-up time, cup inclination angle, blood ion level, Harris Hip Score (HHS), and complications were recorded. RESULTS: One hundred and one patients (25 women and 76 men), 55 years of average age (between 26 and 70), of these 8 were surface prostheses and 93 total prostheses. The mean follow-up time was 10 years (between 5 and 17 years). The mean head diameter was 46.25 (between 38 and 56). The mean inclination of the butts was 45.7° (between 26° and 71°). The correlation force between the verticality of the cup and the increase in ions is moderate r=0.31 for Cr and slight r=0.25 for Co. The correlation force between head size and ion increase is weak and inverse r=-0.14 for Cr and r=0.1 for Co. Five patients (4.9%) required revision (2 [1%] due to increased ions with pseudotumor). The mean time to revision was 6.5 years in which the ions increased. The mean HHS was 94.01 (between 55.8 and 100). In the review of patients, we found 3 with a significant increase in ions who had not followed controls, all 3 had an HHS of 100. The angles of the acetabular components were 69°, 60° and 48° and the diameter of the head was 48.42 and 48mm, respectively. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: M-M prostheses have been a valid option in patients with high functional demand. A bi-annual analytical follow-up is recommended, since in our case we have detected 3 patients with HHS 100 who presented unacceptable elevation of cobalt >20µm/l (according to SECCA) of the ions and 4 with very abnormal elevation of cobalt ≥10µm/l (according to SECCA), all of them with cup orientation angles >50°. With our review we can conclude that there is a moderate correlation between the verticality of the acetabular component and the increase in blood ions and that the follow-up of this patient with angles >50° is essential.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

Nowadays, antibiotics remain the cornerstone in the treatment of bacterial infections. However, in recent decades, bacteria have developed defense mechanisms that make them highly resistant to the existing antibiotics, leaving us vulnerable to infection. The World Health Organization warns that bacterial resistance constitutes a serious threat to humanity at global level and that there is an urgent need of developing new antibacterial agents. Nanotechnology has entered into this scenario by providing novel tools for the treatment of numerous pathologies, highlighting cancer. Nanomedicine brings up the opportunity to address different diseases using drug nanocarriers that can be specifically directed to the therapeutic target, increasing the efficacy of the treatment and reducing the side effects. This entrance speech focuses on mesoporous silica nanoparticles, whose unique properties and enormous versatility allow the design of multiple nanosystems to treat bacterial infections. Its ability to specifically target bacteria and/or biofilm, release different drugs in a controlled manner and/or in a smart fashion, i.e. in response to certain stimuli, and incorporate therapeutic cations for combined therapies, envision the development of advanced nanoformulations that could revolutionize the fight against bacterial infection. ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Mini-implants are metallic devices that are temporarily fixed to the bone and are used to achieve a wide variety of orthodontic movements. Today, they have become an important device that helps the orthodontist in all stages of treatment. The mini-implants are made with joints of different metals, so they are exposed to the corrosion process in the oral cavity. The release of ions can cause adverse physiological effects, including cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, and allergenic effects. This article seeks to review the corrosion of orthodontic mini-implants. The literature reports that the corrosion of mini-implants contributes to inflammation, which is a factor that influences the loss of these devices and the release of metal ions is one of its main causes. Additionally, corrosion can produce perforations and loss of thickness of the metal, which reduces the mechanical resistance and increases the risk of fracture.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Camphenol Plus is a chlorophenolic derivative commonly used as an intra - duct medication for pulporadicular treatments in Dentistry. Scientific reports about the use of this medication on the role of potassium ion channels in the contractile dynamics of induced arterial smooth muscle are low. Objective: To determine the role of potassium ion channels in the contractile dynamics of Camphenol Plus - induced arterial smooth muscle. Method: A preclinical experimental investigation was performed at the "Oscar Langerdorff" Institute of Physiology, Rostock University Medical Center, Rostock, Germany, between October and December 2018. A total of 30 aortic rings obtained from 10 Wistar rats (n=10) were used. The biological preparations were placed in an organ bath and preactivated with Krebs solution concentrated in potassium ions, afterwards it was recorded the tension developed by the vascular smooth muscle after applying the Camphenol Plus solutions in different time intervals. The Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon test were applied. Results: The 31.4% of vascular smooth muscle was relaxed by the effect of Camphenol Plus after preactivation with Krebs solution concentrated in potassium ions. The greatest decrease in vascular tone occurred between the first and third minutes after the use of the drug solutions prepared at 7 %. Conclusions: The in vitro vasorelaxant effect produced by the Camphenol Plus medication on arterial smooth muscle is mediated by the potassium ion channels sensitive to voltage, calcium and the adenosine triphosphate of the vascular endothelium and sarcolemma.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Dental caries is a disease caused by the interaction of several factors, including diet, since the development of the biological environment that promotes cariogenic bacterial metabolism often depends on it. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of caries in preschool children from Huaura, Peru, and to confirm if there is an association between their salivary pH and body mass index (BMI) and the level of knowledge about oral health of one of their parents. Materials and methods: A non-experimental, correlational, and cross-sectional study was conducted in 126 preschoolers equally distributed in 3 age groups (3, 4, and 5 years old). The association between the presence of caries and the variables considered was determined by means of the chi-square test of independence, with a confidence level of 95% and a type I error of 5%. In addition, a multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate the probability of caries development in relation to each risk factor. Results: The prevalence of caries was 80.2% (95%CI:73.2-87.2); furthermore, salivary pH (p=0.012) and the level of parental knowledge (p<0.001) were significantly associated with caries occurrence. Regarding the multiple regression analysis, an OR=0.12 (95%CI:0.02-0.63) was obtained for pH and an OR=0.50 (95%CI:0.35-0.74) for the level of parental knowledge in relation to the probability of caries development. Conclusion: The level of parental knowledge about oral health and high salivary pH levels of preschoolers were protective factors against caries development in the study population. On the other hand, no association was found between BMI and the presence of caries in 5-year-old preschoolers.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The effect of an arginine gel on pH and salivary flow was evaluated after fourteen days of use in women with mild demineralization. A controlled pilot clinical trial was established in which 20 women aged 18-23 years, systemically healthy and with at least one dental organ with demineralization ICDAS 3 were included, two groups: Group A / without arginine (N = 10) and Group B / with arginine (N = 10). A clinical evaluation was carried out, and a sample of unstimulated saliva was taken to determine the pH and the measurement of salivary flow at the beginning and 15 days after using the gel. Statistical analysis was performed with the GraphPad Prism version 8 program. A p <0.05 was considered statistically significant. In both groups, salivary pH was maintained close to neutrality without statistically significant differences, and salivary flow remained at normal values after using the hydrogel for 14 days, although statistically significant differences were observed in the intergroup comparison. Using a gel with arginine for 14 days kept the neutral pH and salivary flow at normal levels without statistically significant differences from the control group.

ABSTRACT

Abstract At INFN-LNL (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare- Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro) SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species), a new facility for the production of radioactive ion beams is being constructed at INFN-LNL (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare - Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro). Radioactive ion beams of neutron-rich nuclei with high purity, in the range of mass between 80 and 160 amu, will be produced by nuclear reactions induced by 40 MeV protons from a cyclotron. The goal of the ISOLPHARM project is to provide a feasibility study for an innovative technology for the production of extremely very high specific activity beta emitting radionuclides as radiopharmaceutical precursors. The ISOL method, adopted in the ISOLPHARM project (a branch of the SPES project), gives the possibility of obtaining pure isobaric beams. In this way, no isotopic contaminations will be present in the beam and afterwards in a proper trapping substrate. The ground-breaking idea of the ISOLPHARM method was granted an International patent (INFN).

ABSTRACT

Abstract 20. Conventional glass ionomer cements are used as dental provisional restorative materials, which present several advantages such as adhesion to the tooth mineral phase among others. On the other hand, the knowledge about biological property of glass ionomers shows various approaches and results. In this work, it was studied the in vitro biological response of human gingival fibroblasts in contact with commercial cements of glass ionomer: Mirafil® and Ionglass® and with their extracts, according to ISO 10993. The extracts of the cements, in which the cells were cultured, were adjusted at different concentrations ranging 0.1% to 100%. The cellular metabolic activity of gingival fibroblasts was measured using the Alamar Blue® reagent. The results showed a significant effect on the cellular metabolic activity correlated with the concentration of liberated ions (Al³+ and Ca²+) for both ionomers, as well as the pH variations of the culture media. This could mean that the cellular metabolic activity is substantially influenced by ions and pH of the cell culture.

ABSTRACT

Summary The study of heavy ion nuclear reactionis an important tool to observe and disentangle different and competing mechanisms, which may arise in the different energy regimes. In particular, at relatively low bombarding energy, it is quite interesting the comparison between pre-equilibrium and thermal emission of light charged particles from hot nuclear systems [1-6]. Indeed, the nuclear structure of the interacting partners can be strongly correlated to the dynamics, especially at energies close to the Coulomb barrier, and this effect emerges when some nucleons or clusters of nucleons are either emitted or captured. In particular, a major attention has been devoted, in the last years, to the possible observation of cluster structure effects in the competing nuclear reaction mechanisms, especially when fast processes are involved. At this purpose, the four reactions 16O+30Si at 111 MeV, 16O+30Si at 128 MeV, 18O+28Si at 126 MeV, 19F+27Al at 133 MeV have been measured to study the onset of pre-equilibrium in an energy range where, for central collisions, complete fusion is expected to be the predominant mode. Experimental data were collected using the GARFIELD + RCo array [7], fully equipped with digital electronics at the LegnaroNational Laboratories. The comparison between experimental data and different model predictions have been performed: in particular, both dynamical models based either on Stochastic Mean Field (TWINGO) or Anti-symmetrized Molecular Dynamics and fully statistical models (GEMINI++) have been considered. Simulated events are filtered through a software replica of the apparatus, to take into account all possible distortions of the experimental distributions due to the finite size of the apparatus.

ABSTRACT

Abstract NUMEN proposes cross sections measurements of Heavy-Ion double charge exchange reactions as an innovative tool to access the nuclear matrix elements, entering the expression of the life time of Neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). A key aspect of the projectis the use at INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) of the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) for the acceleration of the required high resolution and low emittance heavy-ion beams and of MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer for the detection of the ejectiles. The experimental measurements of double charge exchange reactions induced by heavy ions present a number of challenging aspects, since such reactions are characterized by very low cross sections. First experimental results give encouraging indication on the capability to access quantitative information towards the determination of the Nuclear Matrix Elements for 0νββ decay.

ABSTRACT

Summary SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) is the INFN project for a Nuclear Physics facility for the production of Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs). It is in advanced construction in Legnaro, with several technological innovations and challenges foreseen, comprehensive of new achievements and improvements. SPES will provide mostly neutron-rich exotic beams, derived by the fission fragments (up to 1013fiss/s) produced in the interaction of an intense proton beam (200 μA) on a direct UCx target. Several other targets will be developed, in order to provide users a large beam selection. The expected SPES beam intensities, their quality and, finally, their maximum energies (up to 11 MeV/n for A=130) will permit to perform forefront research in nuclear structure and nuclear dynamics, studying a region of the nuclear chart far from stability. This goal will be reached by coordinating the developments on the accelerator complex and those of up-to-date experimental set-ups.
