ABSTRACT

This study aimed to assess and evaluate the prevalence and methodological quality of systematic reviews (SRs) published in major Korean medical journals (KMJs). The top 15 journals with the highest Korean Medical Citation Index, published between 2018 to 2021, were selected. We assessed the methodological quality of SRs using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR 2). In total, 126 SRs were included, with an average of 32 SRs being reported annually. The overall prevalence of SRs in KMJs was 2.8%, with an increase from 2.6% in 2018 to 3.4% in 2021. Overall, the methodological quality of SRs was low (9.5% low, 90.5% critically low). More than 80% of the studies adhered to critical domain items such as a comprehensive literature search and risk of bias assessment, but for items such as protocol registration and listing excluded studies and the justification for exclusion, the adherence rate was less than 15%. While the number of SRs in KMJs steadily increased, the overall confidence in the methodological quality was low to critically low. Therefore, in order to provide the best evidence for decision-making in clinical and public health areas, editors, reviewers, and authors need to pay more attention to improving the quality of SRs.

ABSTRACT

Graduate students complete papers for course requirements, doctor of nursing practice and master's projects, and doctoral dissertations. The valuable information contained in these school papers may be appropriate for publication in professional journals. Graduate students must learn the key differences between school paper and journal article styles. Using this critical information, students can revise their school papers in journal style and achieve a successful publication that contributes to the literature and, ultimately, to the care of patients and their families.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of this article is to present a description and analysis of the scientific production in Epidemiology of the Journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva since its creation in 1996. The titles and abstracts of all articles published in three periods (1996 to 2002, 2011 and 2019) were read and those related to Epidemiology were analyzed. These publications were classified according to the thematic area, study design, sampling method and sample size, and place of origin of the first author. The percentage of epidemiological articles published in the journal jumped from 12.8% in the first period to 31.0% in 2011, and to 55.3% in 2019. The most studied topics were chronic non-communicable diseases (20.3%), nutritional epidemiology (12.2%) and evaluation of health systems, policies, programs and services (10.9%). Descriptive/cross-sectional studies, conducted among adults and from the Southeast region, predominated. The results indicate the need for greater participation of cohort studies, case-control and clinical trials in the scope of the journal's publications, in addition to articles that use more sophisticated statistical methods and well-defined theoretical models, which may contribute in a more relevant way to prevention and control of health problems.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Medical professionals have access to a broad range of resources to address clinical information needs. While much attention is given to new sources of data such as those available on the internet, it is less clear how clinicians choose between peer-reviewed research literature and other publication-based sources. This analysis distinguishes between possible drivers of publication type preference (namely, practice setting, advanced training, professional development experiences). Dentists enrolled in the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) are the population for this study. Theories of human and intellectual capital and institutional logics theory are used to understand how advanced training and other clinical experiences may explain the choices that dentists make when faced with clinical questions. METHODS: An online questionnaire was implemented with general dentists in the US National Dental PBRN. A series of logistic and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression models were used to explain the use of peer-reviewed and other publications. Measures of knowledge-based human capital distinctions (advanced clinical training and research engagement, advanced professional status, personal motivation for professional advancement) were used to explain preferences for research literature as a clinical resource. RESULTS: General dentists with advanced training, as well as those with a skill advancement motivation, show a preference for peer-reviewed materials. General dentists who have been practicing longer tend to favor other dental publications, preferring those sources as a resource when faced with clinical challenges. Human capital and professional motivation distinguish the information preferences among general dentists. Further, these factors explain more variance in use of peer-reviewed materials than practice setting does. Few differences by demographic groups were evident. CONCLUSIONS: Results point to a distinct variation in the general dentistry professional community. Advanced training among general dentists, as well as the types of procedures typically conducted in their practice, distinguishes their information preferences from other general dentists, including those with more years of clinical experience.

ABSTRACT

The FSBI Small Research Grants scheme has been running for 25 years, after its initiation during the Society's 25th Anniversary in 1992, while the Wyn Wheeler Grant for retired researchers was started during the 40th Anniversary year. Over this time some £560 000 has been awarded to researchers and it is argued that this has made a disproportionately positive contribution on fish research and researchers as evidenced by journal articles produced as a result of initial FSBI funding and the career trajectories of some recipients. These grants also reflect the international reach of the Society, and the increasing involvement of female researchers in fish research.

ABSTRACT

Endpoints are the cornerstone of clinical trial design and are the critical elements for evaluating the success of a clinical study. Endpoints are communicated in clinical protocols, study reports, study registration and result posting sites, as well as publications. It is, therefore, important that endpoints are presented consistently, correctly, and completely. The FDAAA Final Rule expectations of describing endpoints in specific terms provides a way to keep this consistency across all documents.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACTIntroduction:The medical congresses are an efficient way, although restricted, to expose the scientific production of a particular specialty. However, the number of complete articles published resulting from papers presented at congresses and published as abstracts is much lower than the number of papers presented during the meetings. Objective:Scale the number of complete articles published and indexed in online databases, from 2012 to January 2015, originally presented at the 28th Congresso Brasileiro de Patologia (28th Brazilian Congress of Pathology) and the 28th Congreso de la Sociedad Latinoamericana de Patología (28th Latin American Society of Pathology Congress).Material and method:In the meetings mentioned 701 papers were presented and their abstracts published in the congresses annals. An observational retrospective study was conducted consulting the following biomedical databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and US National Library of Medicine on the National Institutes of Health (PubMed), with the help of the Google search engine, based on the article title and the list of authors. Results:From 701 studies analyzed, 635 (90.6%) were from Brazilian institutions, 60 (8.6%) from foreign institutions, and six (0.8%) did not identified their home institutions. There were found 63 (8.8%) complete articles published and indexed to consulted databases. International journals were the destination of 38 (60.3%) publications. Conclusion:The number of complete articles published in Pathology area arising from the papers presented in the studied meetings in the first three years after the meetings is relatively small. This number is low compared with other international conferences; however, it is higher than some Brazilian medical congresses analyzed in similar studies.

ABSTRACT

Dissemination of full-article references in connection with medical information responses from pharmaceutical industry medical information departments (PIMID) has both copyright and Physician Payments Sunshine Act (PPSA) compliance requirements. A complex of data must be aggregated from multiple databases, which presents a challenge in efficiently distributing articles and reporting the metrics. Using contemporary programming methods that any PIMID can duplicate and that is described herein, the authors developed a web-based tool (Reprints Tracking Reporter [RTR©]) to meet this need. Information is compiled from an inquiry management database (IRMS®) and library bibliographic database (Quosa®) and matched to the physician National Provider Identifier number per the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System database. RTR identified 2179 unique references from all of the response letters and then matched their copyright status. Several report formats allow for tracking distribution by article, customer, or state and generating Item/Transfer of Value aggregate spend reports on a periodic basis. A notable trend has been decreased article requests from physicians after informing them of the PPSA reporting requirement.

ABSTRACT

While preparation of a journal article for submission may often include informal review by colleagues, an article is not accepted for publication until it has been formally peer reviewed. Peer review is the process whereby journal editors ask expert reviewers to examine the work submitted and prepare a report on its suitability for publication. Two or more revisions of the article may be required following peer review, with the author reworking the article in the light of feedback received on each occasion. This can be challenging for some authors, but used well, it offers a chance to improve the work to the required standard of the journal, and help the author present a more precise and coherent account of the arguments. The extent to which the author responds to the critical commentary of peer reviewers is important, because this may determine whether or not the article is published. This article explores the aims of peer reviewers and recommends ways in which authors can respond to the feedback provided.

ABSTRACT

Primary pediatric medical care is as mainstream as any major cultural practice in the USA. Thus, publishing behavior analytic papers that pertain to problems that present in pediatric settings in pediatric medical journals is one route to mainstream relevance. With sufficient numbers of such papers, it could even lead to prominence. This article describes examples of publishing in pediatric journals and some lessons I learned from the experience. For example, (1) all child behavior problems that present in pediatric settings are of social importance but most are high-frequency, low-intensity problems that are not necessarily exotic or representative of serious pathology, and they usually respond to straightforward behavioral applications; (2) it is usually best to use a "colloquialized version of learning theory" when writing for and speaking to pediatric providers (and the families for whom they provide care); (3) pediatricians often have limited knowledge about behavior analytic research designs; and (4) when submissions are rejected by pediatric journals, the rejection can be exploited as an opportunity to educate pediatric editors and reviewers.

ABSTRACT

This article describes publishing outside behavior analysis, letters to editors, and columns, as well as communicating outside the box with editors, authors, and journalists. Publishing can occur in a wide range of journals (e.g., Consciousness and Cognition), in-house publications of professional associations (e.g., Association for Psychological Science's Observer), general science publications (e.g., American Scientist, The Scientist), publications in service to professions (e.g., The Chronicle of Higher Education), general interest and specialized magazines (e.g., Atlantic Monthly, Skeptical Inquirer), and newspapers (e.g., Los Angeles Times). Communicating with editors, authors, and journalists includes, for instance, formal correspondence with editors and personal correspondence with authors and journalists outside the box about misunderstandings, commonalities, and complementarities of their work with respect to ours. The consequences of publishing and communicating are often unforeseen and fortuitous, many of which can never occur by remaining in the box.
