ABSTRACT

Philosopher Judith Butler has influenced how people talk about vulnerable bodies and sees vulnerability as universal, existential, and relational. Being vulnerable is part of the human condition. The main theoretical areas that run across Butler's work; power, knowledge and subjectivity, performativity, and ethics-are of particular relevance to nursing practice. This review aims to explore how Butler's theoretical work is reflected in research literature within a nursing context. We conducted a scoping review guided by Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework. A systematic literature search of CINAHL (EBSCOhost), MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), PsycINFO (Ovid), and Web of Science identified 15 papers. Butler's theoretical work was applied at an individual and social level in research literature within a nursing context. Nurses need to reflect on their clinical practice and role as health professionals in relation to power and performativity in encounters with patients who are marginalized. Nurses' working conditions, recognition, and understanding are strongly influenced by society, and calling nurses heroes undermines their capacity to challenge and resist the hero identity. The healthcare system's impact on patient-nurse encounters challenges patients' and nurses' subjectivity, performativity, and power relations. The review allowed us to describe how Butler's theoretical work can facilitate a reflection on nursing practice which is a prerequisite for caring, ethical relationships, and working conditions within a nursing context. Butler's concepts can provide useful perspectives on how nurses understand, communicate with, and care for patients, as well as a nuanced understanding of the nursing role and power relations and structures.

ABSTRACT

Opioid overdose deaths are a major health issue in Australia and around the world. Programmes to provide opioid consumers with 'take-home' naloxone to reverse overdose exist internationally, but uptake by mainstream health services and consumers remains inconsistent. Researchers have identified a range of important educational, training and logistical impediments to take-home naloxone uptake and distribution, yet they have focused less on the social dynamics that can enhance or limit access, such as stigma. In this article, we also explore impediments to uptake, drawing on qualitative interview data gathered for an Australian research project on take-home naloxone. Mobilising a performative approach to stigma, we argue that overdose and prevention are shaped by the social dynamics of stigma and, as such, responsibility for dealing with overdose, as with take-home naloxone, should also be considered social (i.e. shared among peers, the public, communities and governments). Our interview data illuminate the various ways in which addiction stigma limits the possibilities and capacities of take-home naloxone and overdose prevention. First, we focus on how stigma may impede professional information provision about take-home naloxone by limiting the extent to which it is presented as a matter of interest for all opioid consumers, not just those who consume opioids illicitly. Second, we explore how stigma may limit the scale-up and expansion of programmes and access points. From here, we focus on how stigma co-constitutes the politics of overdose and prevention, rendering take-home naloxone ill-suited to many social settings of overdose. In closing, we point out that stigma is not just a post hoc impediment to access to and use of take-home naloxone but is central to opioid overdose production itself, and to effective prevention. While take-home naloxone is an excellent life-saving initiative, uncritically valorising it may divert attention from broader goals, such as the de-stigmatisation of drug consumption through decriminalisation, and other ambitious attempts to reduce overdose.

ABSTRACT

A proposta deste artigo é apresentar algumas considerações sobre o pensamento da filósofa Judith Butler, suas críticas à teoria de Lacan, bem como alguns contrapontos a seus argumentos críticos, com o objetivo de demarcar os encontros e desencontros de Butler com a psicanálise. Nesse percurso, identificamos que as críticas da autora se restringem ao primeiro ensino lacaniano, não levando em considerações os avanços das fórmulas quânticas da sexuação e a noção de sinthoma, como arranjo singular do falasser com o gozo. Além disso, constatamos também que seu questionamento em relação à psicanálise não impossibilitou que, para pensar o gênero, Butler se servisse do aparato conceitual da metapsicologia freudiana e lacaniana, especialmente da noção de pulsão. Concluímos que as críticas de Butler à psicanálise não precisam ser tomadas como um problema ou um entrave, visto que elas promovem uma exigência frutífera de precisão teórico-clínica, que irrompe na atualidade, para avançarmos no debate sobre as novas ordenações da sexualidade. The purpose of this paper is to present some considerations about the philosopher Judith Butler's thinking, her criticisms of Lacan's theory, as well as some counterpoints to her critical arguments, aiming to demarcate Butler's possible matches and mismatches with psychoanalysis. Within this course, we identified that the author's criticism is restricted to the first lacanian teaching, disregarding the advances of the sexuation formulas and the notion of sinthome, as a singular arrangement of the falasser with the jouissance. Besides that, we verified that her question about psychoanalysis didn't exclude that, to think about gender, Butler would use the conceptual apparatus of Freudian and Lacanian metapsychology, especially the notion of drive. We concluded that Butler's criticism of psychoanalysis does not need to be taken as a problem or an obstacle, since it promotes a fruitful requirement for theoretical and clinical precision that is emerging nowadays to advance in the debate on the new orders of sexuality. El propósito de este artículo es presentar algunas consideraciones sobre el pensamiento de la filósofa Judith Butler, sus críticas a la teoría de Lacan, así como algunos contrapuntos a sus argumentos críticos, para demarcar encuentros y desencuentros de Butler con el psicoanálisis. De esta manera, identificamos que la crítica de la autora se limita a la primera enseñanza lacaniana, sin considerar los avances de las fórmulas cuánticas de sexuación y la noción de sinthoma, como un arreglo singular del falasser con el goce. Además, también notamos que su pregunta sobre el psicoanálisis no impidió que, para pensar sobre el género, Butler utilizara el aparato conceptual de la metapsicología freudiana y lacaniana, especialmente la noción de pulsión. Llegamos a la conclusión de que la crítica de Butler al psicoanálisis no debe ser tomada como un problema o un obstáculo, ya que promueve una fructífera demanda de precisión teórica y clínica que surge hoy para avanzar en el debate sobre los nuevos órdenes de sexualidad. ABSTRACT

A quarter of a century ago, philosopher Judith Butler (1990) called upon society to create "gender trouble" by disrupting the binary view of sex, gender, and sexuality. She argued that gender, rather than being an essential quality following from biological sex, or an inherent identity, is an act which grows out of, reinforces, and is reinforced by, societal norms and creates the illusion of binary sex. Despite the fact that Butler's philosophical approach to understanding gender has many resonances with a large body of gender research being conducted by social psychologists, little theorizing and research within experimental social psychology has drawn directly on Butler's ideas. In this paper, we will discuss how Butler's ideas can add to experimental social psychologists' understanding of gender. We describe the Butler's ideas from Gender Trouble and discuss the ways in which they fit with current conceptualizations of gender in experimental social psychology. We then propose a series of new research questions that arise from this integration of Butler's work and the social psychological literature. Finally, we suggest a number of concrete ways in which experimental social psychologists can incorporate notions of gender performativity and gender trouble into the ways in which they research gender.

ABSTRACT

Opioid overdose deaths are increasing in Australia and around the world. Despite this, measures aimed at reducing these deaths such as safe injecting facilities and take-home naloxone continue to face obstacles to uptake. The reasons for this are manifold, but a key contributor is public discourse on opioid consumption and overdose. In this article we explore this public discourse using Judith Butler's work on 'grievable lives'. The article analyses mainstream newspaper coverage of opioid overdose in Australia to map key articulations of overdose and to consider how public understandings of overdose are shaped. It then goes on to consider ways these understandings might be reshaped, looking at what have been called overdose 'anti-memorials' and a new website Livesofsubstance.org. In concluding we argue that until the lives of opioid consumers come to be considered grievable, the measures known to reduce overdose deaths may struggle to find public support.

ABSTRACT

Objetivamos apresentar as diferentes modalidades em que o sujeito político é abordado ao longo da obra da filósofa norte-americana Judith Butler, e quais são as diferentes modalidades de resistência e subversão. Nesse sentido, dividimos o texto em duas partes: a primeira cuida das obras iniciais de Butler, período em que a autora concebe o gênero a partir da performatividade. A segunda parte trata das obras mais recentes da filósofa, em que problematizou questões como ética, reconhecimento e distribuição de precariedade. Para a autora é possível encontrar agência política mesmo nesses atores frequentemente considerados como "excluídos". Por fim, sublinhamos as recentes apostas da filósofa, que sugere uma política de coalizões.


We aim to present the different modalities in which the political subject is approached throughout the work of the American philosopher Judith Butler, and what are the different modalities of resistance and subversion. In this sense, we divide the text into two parts: the first explains of the initial works of Butler, period in which the author conceives gender from the perspective of performativity. The second part deals with the most recent works of the philosopher, in which she problematized issues such as ethics, recognition and distribution of precariousness. For the author it is possible to find political agency even in those actors often considered as "excluded". Finally, we underline the recent options of the philosopher, who suggests a politics of coalitions.


Objetivamos presentar las diferentes modalidades en que el sujeto político es abordado a lo largo de la obra de la filósofa norteamericana Judith Butler, y cuáles son las diferentes modalidades de resistencia y subversión. En ese sentido, dividimos el texto en dos partes: la primera cuida de las obras iniciales de Butler, período en que la autora concibe el género a partir de la performatividad. La segunda parte trata de las obras más recientes de la filósofa, en que problematizó cuestiones como ética, reconocimiento y distribución de precariedad. Para la autora es posible encontrar agencia política incluso en esos actores frecuentemente considerados como "excluidos". Por último, subrayamos las opciones recientes de la filósofa, que sugiere una política de coaliciones.


Nous visons à présenter les différentes modalités selon lesquelles le sujet politique est abordé dans le travail de la philosophe américaine Judith Butler, et quelles sont les différentes modalités de résistance et de subversion. En ce sens, nous divisons le texte en deux parties: la première traite des travaux initiaux de Butler, au cours desquels l'auteur conçoit le genre à travers le concept de performativité. La deuxième partie traite des travaux les plus récents de la philosophe, dans lesquels il a problématisé des questions telles que l'éthique, la reconnaissance et la distribution de la précarité. Pour l'auteure, il est possible de trouver une agence politique même chez les acteurs souvent considérés comme "exclus". Enfin, nous soulignons les paris récents de la philosophe, qui suggère une politique de coalitions.

ABSTRACT

Much research tends to treat alcohol and other drug 'recovery' as a process of positive identity change and development. In this article, we depart from this dominant approach by examining how the social and material practices of alcohol and other drug treatment are themselves active in the constitution of 'recovery identity'. Using Judith Butler's theorisation of interpellation, we examine the accounts of treatment experiences and practices provided in interviews with people who inject drugs. In contrast to the existing literature, we argue that the 'recovering addict' is a socially produced category rather than a coherent psychological identity. We consider the production of this category in relation to three dynamics identified in the data: (1) the tendency to materialise treatment subjects as both disordered and as 'in control' of these disorders; (2) the production of treatment subjects as enmeshed in suspect social relationships and therefore requiring surveillance as well as social support; and (3) treatment's particular enactment of social context such that it erases stigmatisation and marginalisation and paradoxically performs subjects as entirely individually responsible for relinquishing drug use. These dynamics produce capacities and attributes often ascribed to identity but which are better understood as articulations of epistemological disorder in the state of knowledge about addiction, and its expression in treatment. By way of conclusion, we question the utility of 'recovery identity', conventionally defined, in providing a rationale for treatment.

On the one hand, there is the recognition that affiliation of certain differences under the concept of disability is nothing but a recent “invention” of Western modernity. On the other hand, is the assumption of the consequences of that construction for the people labeled as disabled? We establish dialogue with important contributions of critical theory, addressing concepts as “dividing practices” (Michel Foucault), “materialization” (Judith Butler), “the body multiple “ (Annemarie Mol) and “sociology of absences” (Boaventura de Sousa Santos), this article attempts understand how the notion of disability can be demobilized by insurgents readings of modernity and its hierarchies.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The article traces the response of the hospital chaplain witnessing ungrieved death. Linking grief with cultural recognition, the article analyzes the absence of grief on the occasion of death within outcast social spheres. It then outlines the ways chaplains both participate in the cultural norms that render lives ungrievable and, conversely, in the solidarity of God, who cares for every life and death. The article closes by situating the chaplain as a liminal figure and proposing liminality itself as an opportunity for solidarity.

Este artículo presenta una reflexión filosófica acerca del reconocimiento y la representación de la violencia. Plantea la importancia política de pensar el modo en que determinada experiencia será representada y el marco de referencia en el que se inscribe esta representación. Uno de los objetivos de los feminismos ha sido que se reconozca la violencia de experiencias que previamente no habían sido consideradas violentas, para evitarlas en el futuro. El carácter "violento" de una experiencia no puede darse por sentado y, antes de reconocer su violencia, la misma debió primero ser conocida. Así, la manera en que la situación emerge dentro de un marco de representación específico posibilitaría, o no, el reconocimiento de su violencia.


Este artigo apresenta uma reflexão filosófica sobre o reconhecimento da violência, sua representação e a importância política das operações de pensar em torno do modo com que será representada determinada experiência e no marco de referência em que se inscreve esta representação. Isto não é menor para os feminismos, já que um de seus objetivos foi que se reconhecesse a violência de determinadas experiências que não tinham sido consideradas violentas previamente. Assinalam, assim, o caráter violento de determinada situação para evitá-la no futuro. O fato de que esta indicação seja necessária sugere que o caráter "violento" não pode ser dado por certo e que antes de reconhecer a violência de certa experiência, esta deve primeiro ser conhecida. Assim, a maneira com que esta situação emerge de um marco de representação específico possibilitaria, ou não, o reconhecimento de sua violência.


This article introduces a philosophical reflection about the recognition and representation of violence. It argues for the political importance of thinking about the way an experience is represented, and the frame of reference in which that representation is inscribed. Feminisms have sought recognition for the violence of experiences that had not been considered violent before, in order to avoid them in the future. The "violent" character of an experience cannot be taken for granted, and before its violence is recognized, it must be known. Thus, the way a situation emerges within a specific frame of representation may or may not enable the recognition of its violence

Este artículo indaga aportes sobre la 'heterosexualidad' del feminismo radical lésbico y de la filosofía de Judith Butler. Se exponen los supuestos que subyacen a las categorías de 'cuerpo' e 'identidad', implicadas en los debates sobre la identidad sexual. Se destaca la emergencia de la dimensión política presente en todo análisis de la sexualidad para dar cuenta de las desventajas de anudar a los cuerpos características esenciales en relación con el género y la sexualidad. Se concluye de incluir localizaciones subjetivas no capturadas en las restricciones propias de identidades fijas y monolíticas


Este artigo investiga contribuições sobre a "heterossexualidade" do feminismo-lésbico radical e da filosofia de Judith Butler. Apresentam-se as hipóteses que subjazem às categorias de "corpo" e "identidade" implicadas nos debates sobre a identidade sexual. Destaca-se a emergência da dimensão política presente em toda análise da sexualidade para dar conta das desvantagens de dar aos corpos características essenciais em relação com o gênero e a sexualidade. Conclui-se incluindo localizações subjetivas não apreendidas nas restrições próprias de identidades fixas e monolíticas.


This article discusses contributions on 'heterosexuality' by radical lesbian feminism and by Judith Butler' philosophy. It describes the assumptions underlying the categories of 'body' and 'identity' involved in the debate on sexual identity. It highlights the emergence of the political dimension present in any discussion of sexuality to account for the disadvantages of tying to bodies essential features related to gender and sexuality. The article concludes with a suggestion to include subjective locations uncaptured in the restrictions of fixed and monolithic identities.

Este artigo aproxima as proposições de desconstrução da distinção sexo/gênero tal qual proposta por Judith Butler com as questões apresentadas no filme A pele que habito, do cineasta Pedro Almodóvar. Neste diálogo, o trabalho debate questões como o diagnóstico de disforia de gênero e o problema da essencialização das categorias feminino/masculino e sua binaridade, a partir dos quais tematiza a normatividade de gênero e a autonomia do sujeito diante das normas.


In this article we link the deconstruction of the sex/gender distinction, as proposed by Judith Butler, with issues presented in the film The skin I live in (Spanish, La Piel que Habito) by Pedro Almodovar. We address gender dysforia as a diagnostic category, and the essencialization of the male/female binary, in order to discuss gender normativity and the subject's autonomy regarding social norms.


Este artículo aproxima las proposiciones de deconstrucción de la distinción sexo/ género propuesta por Judith Butler con las cuestiones presentadas en la película La piel que habito, del cineasta Pedro Almodóvar. En este diálogo, el texto debate cuestiones como el diagnóstico de disforia de género y el problema de la esencialización de las categorías femenino/masculino y su binarismo, a partir de los cuales aborda la normatividad de género y la autonomía del sujeto ante las normas.

Este artigo se propõe a uma discussão teórica sobre duas proposições da filósofa Judith Butler: gênero como performance e gênero como paródia. Para isso, recupera o pensamento do filósofo Jacques Derrida e apresenta hipóteses de articulação entre os dois autores, articulações estas que contribuiriam para a compreensão dos argumentos de Butler não "contra" o feminismo, mas como uma problematização dos termos em que as reivindicações emancipatórias da política identitária se instituíram.


Este artículo propone una discusión teórica sobre dos proposiciones de Judith Butler: el género como performance y el género como parodia. Para ello, retoma el pensamiento de Jacques Derrida y presenta hipótesis de articulación entre ambos autores, que contribuirían a la comprensión de los argumentos de Butler no como 'contra' el feminismo sino como una problematización de los términos en que se han instituido las reivindicaciones emancipatorias de la política identitaria.


This article discusses two propositions by philosopher Judith Butler: gender as performance and gender as parody. A retrieval of the works of philosopher Jacques Derrida supports hypotheses on the dialogue between the two authors, which allow for an understanding of Butler's arguments not as 'against' feminism, but as a challenge to the terms by which the emancipatory claims of identity politics have been formulated.

Este artículo considera algunos ejes de la discusión teórica entre Ernesto Laclau y Judith Butler. En particular, se analizan los modos en que estos autores definen las categorías de sujeto y de identidad, preguntándose por las implicancias que los usos de ciertos conceptos del psicoanálisis tienen para esas definiciones. Esta pregunta por los modos de comprender la subjetividad y la identidad se enlaza con una discusión más amplia sobre la trascendencia de ciertas categorías de análisis de lo social y lo cultural. De esta forma, el artículo se enfoca en los contrapuntos teóricos entre los autores sobre categorías tales como universalidad, política e historicidad.


Este artigo considera alguns eixos da discussão teórica entre Ernesto Laclau e Judith Butler. Em particular, analisam-se os modos com que estes autores definem as categorias de sujeito e de identidade, perguntando-se pelas implicâncias que têm para essas definições os usos de certos conceitos da psicanálise. Esta pergunta, voltada para os modos de se compreenderem a subjetividade e a identidade, liga-se a uma discussão mais ampla sobre a transcendência de certas categorias de análise do social e do cultural. Desta forma, o artigo enfoca os contrapontos teóricos entre os autores sobre categorias tais como universalidade, política e historicidade.


This article is a theoretical discussion on subjectivity and identity, as addressed by Judith Butler and Ernesto Laclau. I explore the implications of the use of psychoanalytical concepts for those definitions. The question about subjectivity and identity is linked to the broader discussion about the transcendence or the historicity of categories for the analysis of the social and the cultural. I focus on the theoretical counterpoint among the authors regarding themes such as universality, politics and historicity.

ABSTRACT

O artigo discute a dificuldade de psicanalistas e de demais praticantes de serviços psicológicos em lidar com as diferentes manifestações de gênero e de sexualidade que aparecem na atualidade. Trabalho com a noção de “gênero” da filósofa feminista Judith Butler que coloca perguntas acerca da determinação social do sujeito, da atitude ética do pesquisador e do clínico e, ainda, de uma ação política com vistas à transformação social. Cabe ainda destacar que existe em Butler uma preocupação “epistemológica”, ou seja, revela em seu trabalho que a noção de gênero é intrinsecamente relacionada a uma noção de sujeito. (AU)


This paper discusses the difficulties met by psychoanalysts and other psychological services practitioners, when dealing with new sex and gender roles which have emerged in our society. I am working on feminist philosopher Judith Butler´s notion of gender. This notion poses some interesting questions about the subject´s social determination, the researcher’s and the practitioner’s ethical attitude, and may also provide a new support for a political action towards social transformation. And we can find in Butler an "epistemological" concern with the intrinsic relation between gender and the notion of subject. (AU)
