ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In goat kids, choosing the appropriate age to administer the first dose of goat pox disease (GTP) vaccine requires knowing when maternal antibody decline concentrations. OBJECTIVE: Determine the persistence of maternal antibodies against goat pox virus (GTPV) in goat kids. ANIMALS: Twenty Saanen goat kids from birth to 120 days old. METHODS: In 2 groups, including: control (receiving colostrum from nonvaccinated does) and treatment (receiving colostrum from vaccinated does). On zero, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 42, 56, 70, 100 and 120 days after the birth, virus neutralization test was used to measure the serum concentration of antibodies against GTPV. RESULTS: At the age of 56 days, the first seronegative goat kids (n = 2) were recorded in the treatment group. At the age of 120 days, all the goat kids in the treatment group were seronegative. The average virus neutralization index (VNI) of the goat kids became negative at the age of 100 to 120 days. All goat kids in the control group were negative at all times. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: One hundred to 120 days of the age seems to be the time to administer the first GTP vaccine in the goat kids with passive immunity against goat pox.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Hearing loss is a common sensory impairment in children that affects quality of life and development. Early intervention, such as hearing aids and communication therapies, can help children overcome these challenges and lessen the impact on their development. The objective of this study was to identify specific patient demographic factors correlated with the prevalence of pediatric conductive hearing loss. STUDY DESIGN: The study utilized the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality which collects inpatient information from hospitals for patients under 21 years old. We included all patients discharged in 2016 diagnosed with conductive hearing loss, and excluded neonatal patients discharged within 28 days of birth. METHODS: Statistical analyses were performed using R Studio and IBM SPSS Statistics. Weighted odds ratios were calculated for conductive hearing loss in relation to race and income, and a multivariate regression analysis examined associations between demographic variables and race categories in conductive hearing loss. RESULTS: The prevalence of conductive hearing loss (CHL) in pediatric patients in 2016 was 51.62 cases per 100,000 patients. Non-Hispanic White patients had the highest prevalence, while Black patients had the highest likelihood of CHL compared to the overall population. Lower income levels were associated with a decreased probability of CHL diagnosis. After adjusting for age, sex, hospital region, insurance, and income on multivariate analysis, White and Black patients were less likely to be diagnosed with CHL. Furthermore, patients in specific income quartiles also had lower CHL likelihood compared to the general population. CONCLUSION: While Black patients had a higher likelihood of being diagnosed with CHL than the general population, socioeconomic factors such as income greatly influenced the likelihood of CHL diagnosis. Other significant factors included income, region of the country, sex, and age. Further research is needed to better understand and address healthcare disparities related to pediatric hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the associations between pediatric adverse events (PAEs) and both hospital and patient characteristics within the inpatient hospital setting, specifically focusing on Neonatal Blood Stream Infection (NBSI) as defined by pediatric quality indicators (PDIs) from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). This research aims to answer questions regarding the relationship between hospital characteristics and patient demographics with the occurrence of NBSI. METHODS: This study utilized discharge data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Kids' Inpatient Databases (KID) for the year 2019. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were employed to analyze patient-level encounters of NBSIs. The analysis examined various factors including hospital size, location, and teaching status, as well as patient-specific variables such as gender, age, race, service lines, payment sources, and major operating room procedures. RESULTS: The results indicate that Public and Private not-for-profit hospitals showed significantly lower odds of experiencing NBSIs when compared to Private investor-owned hospitals, as did smaller, rural, and nonteaching hospitals when compared to large hospitals. Additionally, individual factors such as gender, age, race, service lines, payment sources, and types of major operating room procedures were found to have varying levels of significance in relation to NBSI. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides important insights into PAEs within the inpatient hospital setting, particularly focusing on NBSIs within the PDI framework. The findings highlight critical areas for the development of evidence-based interventions and guidelines, which are essential for clinicians and policymakers. Ultimately, this study contributes to the understanding and improvement of pediatric patient safety by emphasizing the necessity for targeted strategies to mitigate the risk of NBSI.

BACKGROUND: It is proven that B vitamins through promote a wide range of metabolic pathways in animals as cofactors improve animal performance. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to investigate the impacts of maternal B complex vitamin injection on performance and plasma parameters in goats and their offspring, as well as the faeces status of newborn kids. METHODS: In this research, the pregnant goats (3 years old) were randomly divided into two groups: the control group (without B complex vitamin injection) and the B complex vitamin group (5 mL B complex vitamin injection per animal). The animals were injected with 5 mL B complex vitamin twice during the transition period (5 weeks pre- and 5 weeks post-kidding). The goats during the transition period and kids on days 10, 20 and 30 were weighed. Feed intake by goats and consumption of milk and starter in kids were recorded daily. The dry matter digestibility by kids was tested by collecting samples of faeces and feed for 5 days in the last week. Chemical analysis was determined using the AOAC method. The kids' faeces were prepared daily during the study. The blood samples of goats and newborn kids were taken 7 days after kidding. Then, levels of B group vitamin, as well as concentrations of liver enzymes, thyroid hormones and immunological parameters, were determined in plasma of goat and their offspring. In addition, concentrations of glucose and insulin were measured in goat plasma (Asadi et al., 2024). RESULTS: According to results, the performances of goats and their offspring, as well as kids' faeces status, were improved by maternal B complex vitamin injection (p < 0.0001). The levels of cobalamin, pyridoxine, thiamine, folic acid, nicotinic, pantothenic and unconjugated pteridine increased in the plasma of goats and their kids in the B complex vitamin group compared with the control group during the transition period (p < 0.0001). Injection of maternal B complex vitamin raised the plasma levels of triiodothyronine and tetraiodothyronine, immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M in goats and their offspring (p < 0.0001). Higher levels of glucose and lower levels of insulin were determined in the goats injected with B complex vitamin (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that maternal B complex vitamin injection is required for the improvement of performance, health status and the blood plasma parameters in pregnant goats and their kids.

ABSTRACT

We present the optical characterization of two-scale hierarchical phased-array antenna kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) for millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths. Our KIDs have a lumped-element architecture with parallel plate capacitors and aluminum inductors. The incoming light is received with a hierarchical phased array of slot dipole antennas, split into 4 frequency bands (between 125 GHz and 365 GHz) with on-chip lumped-element band-pass filters, and routed to different KIDs using microstriplines. Individual pixels detect light for the 3 higher-frequency bands (190-365 GHz), and the signals from four individual pixels are coherently summed to create a larger pixel detecting light for the lowest frequency band (125-175 GHz). The spectral response of the band-pass filters was measured using Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTS), the far-field beam pattern of the phased-array antennas was obtained using an infrared source mounted on a 2-axis translating stage, and the optical efficiency of the KIDs was characterized by observing loads at 294 K and 77 K. We report on the results of these three measurements.

ABSTRACT

In French dairy goat systems, kids are generally separated from their mother does shortly after birth. The main drivers of this practice are related to health-especially the prevention of the Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Virus (CAEV) transmission-and economics. However, the separation of young ruminants from their does is being increasingly questioned by society and has raised concerns about the satisfaction of their behavioral needs. Some farmers choose to leave their female kids with their does. The aims of this study were to understand their motivations for leaving kids with their does, to describe how kids are reared in this case and how farmers perceive different aspects of the impacts of this practice. Individual semi-structured interviews were carried out with 40 farmers who had implemented the kids-with-does practice for at least one year. Compared with the national database describing the French population of dairy goat farmers, the characteristics of the interviewed farmers differed from those of the general population. They were younger and had done longer studies. Their farms were smaller, mainly with rare breeds and milk was mainly processed on-farm under an organic certification system. They chose to implement this practice for different reasons: ethical considerations, improving integration of kids within the herd, saving time and increasing comfort at work or improving the kids' growth, welfare, and health. The doe-kid rearing contact practices varied greatly between farms, with some kids staying with their does from a period of 45 d to never being separated; furthermore, some kids remained with their does all day, while others remained together part of the day or for a limited time, and daily contact evolved over time. Overall, farmers were satisfied as the benefits quoted were coherent with their motivations to implement this rearing practice. Most have decided to continue the practice, though usually with changes. However, as 40% of them had only 3 years or less of experience of doe-kid rearing, some had not sufficient hindsight into long-term issues such as the transmission of CAEV. It is crucial to tackle challenges associated with this practice, i.e., potentially wild kids, health issues, and economic consequences stemming from a reduction in marketable milk.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the extent of extraskeletal manifestations along with inpatient outcomes and complications associated with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study utilized the Kids' Inpatient Database as a part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project to investigate inpatient hospital outcomes and management in patients with OI from 1997 through 2016. Data regarding hospital characteristics, cost of treatment, inpatient outcomes, and procedures were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: There were 7291 admissions that listed OI as a diagnosis in the Kids' Inpatient Database from 1997 through 2016. Unexpectedly, more than one-third of all admissions in these children with OI presented with an extraskeletal manifestation. The rate of major complications was 3.85%. The rate of minor complications was 19.4%, most commonly respiratory problems. The mortality rate was 18.2% in the neonatal period and 1.0% in all other admissions. Total charges of hospital stay increased over the years. CONCLUSIONS: We identified a striking prevalence of extraskeletal manifestations in OI along with inpatient outcomes and complications associated with OI, of which respiratory complications were predominant. We observed a significant financial burden for patients with OI and identified additional risks for financial crisis, in addition to disparities in care identified among socioeconomic groups. These data contribute to a more holistic understanding of OI from diagnosis to management.

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Compreender as percepções de Agentes Comunitários de Saúde sobre violência doméstica contra crianças e adolescentes. Métodos: Estudo descritivo, exploratório, de abordagem qualitativa, realizado no município de Iguatu, Ceará, Brasil, com 68 agentes comunitários de saúde no ano de 2018, por meio de grupos focais. Os dados foram organizados em temáticas e interpretados de acordo com a literatura pertinente, utilizando a "Análise categorial de conteúdo". Resultados: Os participantes compreendem que a violência contra os menores perpassa a física, abrangendo a violência verbal e psicológica, sentindo-se desamparados na atuação a violência doméstica contra crianças e adolescentes, não reconhecendo o apoio das instituições de saúde e assistência social, focando-se no Conselho Tutelar. Ainda, sentem medo de represálias e reconhecem a fragilidade no trato ético dos casos de violência, com possível quebra de sigilo, entendendo que o enfrentamento da violência se faz com a abordagem da família, não apenas do menor. Conclusão: Evidenciou-se nas percepções dificuldades interventivas e o receio de represálias, comprometendo as atividades profissionais, gerando a subnotificação e a não intervenção efetiva dos casos de violência conta crianças e adolescentes. Objective: To understand the perceptions of community health agents about domestic violence against children and adolescents. Methods: Descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach, carried out in the city of Iguatu, Ceará, Brazil, with 68 community health workers in 2018, through focus groups. Data were organized into themes and interpreted according to the relevant literature, using the "Category analysis of content". Results: Participants understand that violence against minors permeates the physical, covering verbal and psychological violence, feeling helpless in acting on domestic violence against children and adolescents, not recognizing the support of health and social assistance institutions, focusing on them. if in the Guardianship Council. Still, they are afraid of reprisals and recognize the fragility in the ethical treatment of cases of violence, with possible breach of confidentiality, understanding that the confrontation of violence is done with the approach of the family, not just the minor. Conclusion: Interventional difficulties and fear of reprisals were evidenced in the perceptions, compromising professional activities, generating underreporting and non-effective intervention in cases of violence against children and adolescents. Resultados: Los participantes comprenden que la violencia contra los menores traspasa lo físico, abarcando la violencia verbal y psicológica, sintiéndose impotentes al actuar sobre la violencia intrafamiliar contra los niños, niñas y adolescentes, desconociendo el apoyo de las instituciones de salud y asistencia social, enfocándose en ellos si en el Consejo de Tutela. Aún así, temen represalias y reconocen la fragilidad en el tratamiento ético de los casos de violencia, con posible ruptura de la confidencialidad, entendiendo que el enfrentamiento a la violencia se hace con el enfoque de la familia, no sólo del menor. Conclusión: Se evidenciaron dificultades intervencionistas y temor a represalias en las percepciones, comprometiendo las actividades profesionales, generando subregistro y no intervención efectiva en casos de violencia contra niños y adolescentes. ABSTRACT

Classifying kid carcasses according to their fatness and conformation scores guides producers toward higher quality and income-generating production methods and determines the ideal slaughter time. This study aimed to determine the effects of Colomer-Rocher fatness and conformation classes on carcass and meat quality characteristics in goat kids. A total of 102 male kid carcasses were used in the study. Carcasses were divided into fatness (1-, 1, 1+, 2-) and conformation (P-, P, P+; O-) classes according to the Colomer-Rocher classification, and these groups were accepted as the experimental group. Hierarchical clustering analysis divided the kid carcasses into 5 clusters using certain carcass characteristics. Differences between clusters in most of the carcass characteristics were significant. The difference between the cluster groups in terms of meat colour and sensory characteristics was also significant. Fatness and conformation classes significantly affected most characteristics except kidney knob and channel fat (KKCF) percentages and carcass joints percentages. The Colomer-Rocher conformation classification was found to be more discriminatory in terms of meat quality than the fatness classification.

ABSTRACT

Until recently, no disease-specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL) questionnaire existed for pediatric traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). In this revalidation study, the psychometric properties and the validity of the 35-item QOLIBRI-KID/ADO questionnaire in its final German version were examined in 300 children and adolescents. It is the first self-reported TBI-specific tool for measuring pediatric HRQoL in individuals aged between 8 and 17 years. The six-factor model fits the data adequately. The questionnaire's internal consistency was excellent for the total score and satisfactory to excellent for the scale scores. Intraclass correlations indicated good test-retest reliability, and the measure's construct validity was supported by the overlap between the QOLBRI-KID/ADO and the PedsQL, which measures generic HRQoL. The discriminant validity tests showed that older children and girls reported a significantly lower HRQoL than comparison groups, and this was also true of children who were anxious or depressed, or who suffered from post-concussion symptoms, replicating the results of the questionnaire's first developmental study. Our results suggest that the QOLIBRI-KID/ADO is a reliable and valid multidimensional tool that can be used together with the adult version in clinical contexts and research to measure disease-specific HRQoL after pediatric TBI throughout a person's life. This may help improve care, treatment, daily functioning, and HRQoL after TBI.

In this study, the effect of intaking hydrogen-rich water (HRW) on the metabolic profile of Gurcu goats during the peripartum period and the survival/growth performance of kids were evaluated. Twenty-three pregnant goats were divided into two groups 21-23 days before the due date. Group 1 (G1, n = 10) was given HRW from day 21 before delivery until day 21 after delivery. Group 2 (G2, n = 13) served as the control. Blood samples were weekly taken from 21 days before delivery until 21 days after delivery. Hydrogen-rich water increased serum glucose concentration on the delivery day more than in G2 (P = 0.016). Hydrogen-rich water decreased serum total cholesterol (P = 0.02) and creatinine (P = 0.05) concentration at delivery. Group effect and time effect were significant in triglyceride (P < 0.001, P = 0.001, respectively) and albumin (P < 0.001, P = 0.002, respectively) concentration. Aspartate transaminase decreased towards the delivery day in G1 (P < 0.05). Serum non-esterified fatty acids concentration was lower in G1 than in G2, but there was no significant differences (P > 0.05). Beta-hydroxybutyric acid concentration an increased in both groups during the prepartum period, although there was no significance (P > 0.05). Hydrogen-rich water did not affect the birth weight and growth performance of the kids (P > 0.05), but it increased their survival rates and overall health, although there was no significance (P > 0.05). In conclusion, HRW may have an impact on the metabolic profiles during the peripartum period and have a positive effect on lipid profiles. Additionally, intaking HRW to goats during the peripartum period may improve the health and survival of kids and reduce their mortality.

Korean Native Black Goats deliver mainly during the cold season. However, in winter, there is a high risk of stunted growth and mortality for their newborns. Therefore, we conducted this study to develop a KNBG parturition detection system that detects and provides managers with early notification of the signs of parturition. The KNBG parturition detection system consists of triaxial accelerometers, gateways, a server, and parturition detection alarm terminals. Then, two different data, the labor and non-labor data, were acquired and a Decision Tree algorithm was used to classify them. After classifying the labor and non-labor states, the sum of the labor status data was multiplied by the activity count value to enhance the classification accuracy. Finally, the Labor Pain Index (LPI) was derived. Based on the LPI, the optimal processing time window was determined to be 10 min, and the threshold value for labor classification was determined to be 14 240.92. The parturition detection rate was 82.4%, with 14 out of 17 parturitions successfully detected, and the average parturition detection time was 90.6 min before the actual parturition time of the first kid. The KNBG parturition detection system is expected to reduce the risk of stunted growth and mortality due to hypothermia in KNBG kids by detecting parturition 90.6 min before the parturition of the first kid, with a success rate of 82.4%, enabling parturition nursing.

In dairy goat kids, weaning is often associated with poor growth leading to a decline in welfare and performance; however, little is known about optimal weaning practices. This study aimed to determine the optimal weaning age for dairy goat kids to maximize outcome measures of welfare related to growth, feed intake, and behavior. Thirty-six newborn female Alpine kids were blocked by weight and birth date, paired with a similar male companion and randomly allocated to one of the three weaning age treatments: 6 (6W), 8 (8W), and 10 wk (10W). Kids had ad libitum access to acidified milk replacer refilled twice daily, concentrates, hay, and water. Milk consumption was measured daily, and concentrate consumption, weekly. Ten behaviors were live observed on days -8, -4, 0, 6, and 12 relative to weaning (i.e., weaning day = 0). Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to assess differences from baseline between the 6W, 8W, and 10W treatments. Post hoc analysis using the Dwass, Steel, Critchlow-Fligner (DSCF) multiple comparison analysis was used to evaluate pairwise treatment differences based on two-sample Wilcoxon comparisons. Kids weaned at 10 wk had the greatest increase compared to baseline in concentrate consumption (P = 0.0160), and greatest decrease compared to baseline in vocalization (P = 0.0008) while both 8- and 10- wk kid's groups had the greatest increase compared to baseline in self-grooming time (P < 0.0001), and cross-sucking time (P = 0.0006). Kids weaned at 6 wk of age were found to have the smallest increase compared to baseline in concentrate consumption (P = 0.0160) and self-grooming time (P < 0.0001), and the greatest increase compared to baseline in allogrooming time (P = 0.0032) and in redirected behaviors aimed towards the environment (biting and licking time [P = 0.0173]; displacement at the nipple frequency [P = 0.0236]). No negative impact of weaning on growth of either group was identified. Overall, our results tend towards a higher degree of discomfort behaviors (allogrooming, biting/licking, displacement, and vocalizations) in kids weaned earlier compared to later weaning, while kids weaned later showed higher levels of positive behaviors (lying time and self-grooming).


In dairy goat kids, there is limited literature available on weaning management practices, despite this period being one of the most stressful events for kids and being associated with measures of poor welfare. This study aimed to compare weaning of dairy goat kids at 6-, 8-, and 10-wk of age to maximize outcome measures of welfare related to growth, feed intake, and behavior. Kids weaned at 10 wk of age had the greatest increase in concentrate consumption and decrease in vocalization. Both 8- and 10-wk kids had the greatest increase in self-grooming and cross-sucking. Kids weaned at 6-wk of age had the smallest increase in concentrate consumption, greatest decrease in self-grooming, and greatest increase in allogrooming and redirected behaviors aimed towards the environment. No negative impact of weaning on growth was identified. Our results showed a higher degree of discomfort behaviors in kids weaned earlier compared to later weaning at 8- or 10-wk. Despite similar levels of discomfort behaviors for kids weaned at later ages, vocalization difference was greatest for kids weaned at 8 wk of age. Kids weaned at later ages seem to cope better with the transition to solid feed compared to kids weaned at an early age.

Pediatric health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as a measure of subjective wellbeing and functioning has received increasing attention over the past decade. HRQoL in children and adolescents following pediatric traumatic brain injury (pTBI) has been poorly studied, and performing adequate measurements in this population is challenging. This study compares child/adolescent and parent reports of HRQoL following pTBI using the newly developed Quality of Life after Brain Injury in Children and Adolescents (QOLIBRI-KID/ADO) questionnaire. Three hundred dyads of 8-17-year-old children/adolescents and their parents were included in the study. The parent-child agreement, estimated using intraclass correlation coefficients and Cohen's κ, displayed poor to moderate concordance. Approximately two-fifths of parents (39.3%) tended to report lower HRQoL for their children/adolescents on the total QOLIBRI-KID/ADO score. At the same time, about one-fifth (21.3%) reported higher HRQoL Total scores for their children/adolescents. The best agreement for parents rating adolescents (aged 13-17 years) was found in terms of the Total score and the Cognition and Self scale scores. To date, parent-reported HRQoL has been the preferred choice in pediatric research after TBI. However, with a parent-child disagreement of approximately 60%, our results highlight the importance of considering self-reports for children/adolescents capable of answering or completing the HRQoL measures.

ABSTRACT

Objetivo:Analizar la percepción de los pacientes sobre la humanización de los cuidados de enfermería en una unidad de hemodiálisis.Material y Método: Estudio descriptivo transversal, realizado en 2023 en la unidad de hemodiálisis del Hospital Universitario de Jaén. Se utilizó el cuestionario PCHE 3ªversión (32 ítems, escala Likert 1-4), obteniéndose una puntuación sobre percepción global del cuidado humanizado y 3 puntuaciones correspondientes a las dimensiones: “Cualidades del hacer de enfermería”, “Apertura a la comunicación para proporcionar educación para la salud a la persona” y “Priorizar el sujeto de cuidado”. También se recogieron las variables sexo, edad y tiempo en hemodiálisis. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo, y se comparó la puntuación global y de las 3 dimensiones con la variable sexo (U-Mann-Whitney) y con las otras variables (Rho-Spearman). Resultados: Se analizaron 38 cuestionarios, 57,9% hombres, edad media: 65,2±15,28años, mediana tiempo en hemodiálisis: 42 (P25:8-P75:96) meses. Alpha de Cronbach del cuestionario: 0,919. Un 73,7% calificó como “siempre” la percepción global del cuidado humanizado, y un 5,3% “nunca”. Analizando las respuestas “siempre” y “nunca” en cada dimensión, encontramos: “Comunicación” (63,2% vs 5,3%), “Priorizar al paciente” (63,2% vs 5,3%) y “Cualidades del hacer” (84,2% vs 5,3%). Los pacientes con >1 año en hemodiálisis presentaron peor puntuación total PCHE (p=0,03), también encontramos correlación entre “tiempo en diálisis” y la dimensión “Cualidades del hacer” (Rho-Spearman:-0,346; p=0,039).Conclusiones: La percepción por parte de los pacientes en hemodiálisis sobre el cuidado humanizado de enfermería ha sido buena, identificándose áreas de mejora en la comunicación y priorización del paciente (AU)

ABSTRACT

Sodium monensin is the most frequently used ionophore as a growth promoter in ruminant diets. It has numerous benefits; however its toxic effects have also been observed in several animal species. Naturally occurring cases have not yet been reported in goats. This study describes an outbreak of accidental poisoning, characterizing its clinical, laboratory and pathological findings. Thirty-seven of 40 Anglo Nubian goat kids became intoxicated after receiving a diet that was erroneously supplemented with sodium monensin. They ingested an estimated toxic dose between 25 and 39 mg/kg BW. Clinical evolution was monitored (n = 27), followed by serum creatine kinase (CK) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities measurements, and blood gas analysis. Postmortem examinations were performed between 1 and 8 days of evolution (n = 14). Clinical signs began 5 h after ingestion and included reticuloruminal hypomotility, lethargy, anorexia, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmia, wet cough, pulmonary and tracheal crackles, and serous nasal discharge. The morbidity and lethality rates were 92.5 and 62.1%, respectively. CK and AST activities increased, reaching median values of 10,860 and 1596 U/L, respectively; the hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis was mild. The lesions were characterized by degeneration and necrosis of the cardiac and skeletal muscles, pulmonary congestion and edema, and passive liver congestion. The kids essentially developed cardiomyopathy with left and right congestive heart failures. Unlike in other ruminant species, skeletal muscle functional disability was infrequent. It can be concluded that monensin is toxic to goats and should be used with caution in their diet.

ABSTRACT

Acute demyelinating leucoencephalomyelitis was the most conspicuous microscopic change in the brain and spinal cord of kids infected with caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV). TUNEL positivity and labelling of anti-bax and anti-caspases-3, -8 and -9 were found in a distinct population of glial cells, mainly at the edges of the demyelinated plaques and perivascular areas and, to a lesser extent, in neurons. Double labelling revealed that most of these apoptotic cells in the demyelinated plaques were astrocytes and a few were oligodendroglia. In contrast, expression of bcl-2, an anti-apoptotic protein, was found mainly in neurons of the brainstem and cerebellum and motor neurons of the spinal cord, but was restricted in glial cells. These results suggest that apoptosis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of CAE demyelinating encephalitis.

ABSTRACT

Goats are an excellent animal model for research on some physiological and pathophysiological processes in humans. The search for supplements that prevent homeostasis disorders and strengthen the immune system is necessary to reduce the risk of many diseases in both humans and animals. The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of supplementation with a mixture of dried extracts of Curcuma longa and Rosmarinus officinalis on the expression of acute-phase protein (SAA, HP, CRP, LALBA, AGP, CP, FGA, FGB, and FGG), cathelicidin (BAC5, BAC7.5, BAC3.4, MAP28, MAP34, and HEPC), beta-defensin-1 (GBD1, DEFB1), and beta-defensin-2, and cytolytic protein (LIZ and LF) genes in the livers of young castrated bucks of the Polish White Improved breed. The higher expression of LF in the control group suggests that it is important for the first line of hepatic immune defense and its expression is downregulated by the mixture of turmeric and rosemary extracts; thus, the spice-herb mixture mutes its activity. The lower expression of FGB and the higher expression of BAC5 genes in the livers of healthy, young castrated bucks who were administered the supplement suggest the silencing effects of the mixture on the acute-phase response and the stimulating effect on the antimicrobial activity of the immune system.

BACKGROUND: Ichthyoses are a rare group of keratinization disorders characterized by scaling of the skin due to an impaired barrier function. Few studies have addressed ear involvement in patients with ichthyosis, although it is a probably underestimated aspect of the disease. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to provide an overview of the otological manifestations in ichthyosis and propose specific treatment options. METHODS: Articles were collected using PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. A total of 53 articles were included in this literature review. RESULTS: The most common ear problem in patients with ichthyosis is scale accumulation in the ear canals, which can lead to conductive hearing loss and increases the risk of ear infections. Furthermore, some types of ichthyosis are associated with outer ear malformations. Lastly, sensorineural hearing loss is common in syndromic forms of ichthyosis. CONCLUSIONS: Otological problems are present in all types of ichthyoses and their treatment is challenging. The involvement of ear, nose, and throat specialists in the routine care of ichthyosis patients is essential for early identification and treatment of these manifestations. More research is needed to provide more insight into the otological problems in ichthyosis and to ameliorate treatment options.

ABSTRACT

Molecules sourced from marine environments hold immense promise for the development of novel therapeutic drugs, owing to their distinctive chemical compositions and valuable medicinal attributes. Notably, Talarolide A and Talaropeptides A-D have gained recent attention as potential candidates for pharmaceutical applications. This study aims to explore the chemical reactivity of Talarolide A and Talaropeptides A-D through the application of molecular modeling and computational chemistry techniques, specifically employing Conceptual Density Functional Theory (CDFT). By investigating their chemical behaviors, the study seeks to contribute to the understanding of the potential pharmacological uses of these marine-derived compounds. The molecular geometry optimizations and frequency calculations were conducted using the Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTBA) method. This was followed by a subsequent round of geometry optimization, frequency analysis, and computation of electronic properties and chemical reactivity descriptors. We employed the MN12SX/Def2TZVP/H2O model chemistry, utilizing the Gaussian 16 program and the SMD solvation model. The analysis of the global reactivity descriptors arising from CDFT was achieved as well as the graphical comparison of the dual descriptor DD revealing the areas of the molecules with more propensity to suffer a nucleophilic or electrophilic attack. Additionally, Molinspiration and SwissTargetPrediction were considered for the calculation of molecular characteristics and predicted biological targets. These include enzymes, nuclear receptors, kinase inhibitors, GPCR ligands, and ion channel modulators. The graphical results show that Talarolide A and the Talaropeptides A-D are likely to behave as protease inhibitors.
