ABSTRACT

The development of peroxidase mimic nanocatalysts is relevant for oxidation reactions in biosensing, environmental monitoring and green chemical processes. Several nanomaterials have been proposed as peroxidase mimic, the majority of which consists of noble metals and oxide nanoparticles (NPs). Yet, there is still limited information about how the change in the composition influences their catalytic activity. Here, the peroxidase mimic behaviour of gold NPs is compared to a traditional nanoalloy as Au-Ag and to the Au-Fe and the Au-Co nanoalloys, which were not tested before as oxidation catalysis. Since the alloys of gold with iron and cobalt are thermodynamically unstable, laser ablation in liquid (LAL) is exploited for the synthesis of these NPs. Using LAL, no chemical stabilizers or capping agents are present on the NPs surface, allowing the evaluation of the oxidation behaviour as a function of the alloy composition. The results point to the importance of surface gold atoms in the catalytic process, but also indicate the possibility of obtaining active nanocatalysts with a lower content of Au by alloying it with iron, which is earth-abundant, non-toxic and low cost. Overall, Au nanoalloys are worth consideration as a more sustainable alternative to pure Au nanocatalysts for oxidation reactions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Keloids cannot be effectively treated using monotherapy regimens. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ablation (a novel needle-assisted electrocoagulation technique) combined with pharmacotherapy (corticosteroid and 5-fluorouracil [5-FU] injections) in removing keloids and to investigate the underlying biological mechanisms. METHODS: The effects of energy consumption and duration of needle-assisted electrocoagulation on the ablation zone were tested in porcine liver tissue, which simulates human skin. The regulatory effects of ablation combined with pharmacotherapy on collagen deposition, cell proliferation, and angiogenesis were analyzed in a keloid-bearing nude mouse model in vivo. In a clinical trial involving six patients with keloids, the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) and Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) scores were graded before treatment and 1 month after one cycle of ablation combined with corticosteroid and 5-FU therapy. RESULTS: Higher energy consumption and longer duration of electrocoagulation resulted in a larger ablation zone and higher surface temperature. Ablation combined with pharmacotherapy significantly reduced keloid volume in nude mice, upregulated MMP-1 and MMP-3, downregulated COL I and COL III, and inhibited angiogenesis and proliferation. This combination also significantly reduced the VSS and POSAS scores in patients with keloids after treatment without any obvious adverse events. CONCLUSION: Our findings show that electroablation combined with pharmacotherapy effectively reduces keloid volume by inhibiting collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation. Thus, this novel combination may serve as a safe therapeutic approach for keloid removal.

Experimental systems allowing aerosol exposure (AE) of cell cultures at the air-liquid-interface (ALI) are increasingly being used to assess the toxicity of inhaled contaminants as they are more biomimetic than standard methods using submerged cultures, however, they require detailed characterisation before use. An AE-ALI system combining aerosol generation with a CULTEX® exposure chamber was characterised with respect to particle deposition and the cellular effects of filtered air (typical control) exposures. The effect of system parameters (electrostatic precipitator voltage, air flowrate to cells and insert size) on deposition efficiency and spatial distribution were investigated using ICP-MS and laser ablation ICP-MS, for an aerosol of CeO2 nanoparticles. Deposition varied with conditions, but appropriate choice of operating parameters produced broadly uniform deposition at suitable levels. The impact of air exposure duration on alveolar cells (A549) and primary small airway epithelial cells (SAECs) was explored with respect to LDH release and expression of selected genes. Results indicated that air exposures could have a significant impact on cells (e.g., cytotoxicity and expression of genes, including CXCL1, HMOX1, and SPP1) at relatively short durations (from 10 mins) and that SAECs were more sensitive. These findings indicate that detailed system characterisation is essential to ensure meaningful results.

ABSTRACT

Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) offer promising methods for disinfection by generating radical species like hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anion radicals, and hydroxy peroxyl, which can induce oxidative stress and deactivate bacterial cells. Photocatalysis, a subset of AOPs, activates a semiconductor using specific electromagnetic wavelengths. A novel material, Cu/Cu2O/CuO nanoparticles (NPs), was synthesized via a laser ablation protocol (using a 1064 nm wavelength laser with water as a solvent, with energy ranges of 25, 50, and 80 mJ for 10 min). The target was sintered from 100 °C to 800 °C at rates of 1.6, 1.1, and 1 °C/min. The composite phases of Cu, CuO, and Cu2O showed enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible-light excitation at 368 nm. The size of Cu/Cu2O/CuO NPs facilitates penetration into microorganisms, thereby improving the disinfection effect. This study contributes to synthesizing mixed copper oxides and exploring their activation as photocatalysts for cleaner surfaces. The electronic and electrochemical properties have potential applications in other fields, such as capacitor materials. The laser ablation method allowed for modification of the band gap absorption and enhancement of the catalytic properties in Cu/Cu2O/CuO NPs compared to precursors. The disinfection of E. coli with Cu/Cu2O/CuO systems serves as a case study demonstrating the methodology's versatility for various applications, including disinfection against different microorganisms, both Gram-positive and Gram-negative.

ABSTRACT

Nickel(Ni)-containing materials have been widely used in a wide range of medical applications, including orthopaedics. Despite their excellent properties, there is still a problem with the release of nickel ions into the patient's body, which can cause changes in the behaviour of surrounding cells and tissues. This study aims to evaluate the effects of Ni on bone cells with an emphasis on the determination of Ni localization in cellular compartments in time. For these purposes, one of the most suitable models for studying the effects induced by metal implants was used-the patient's osteoarthritic cells. Thanks to this it was possible to simulate the pathophysiological conditions in the patient's body, as well as to evaluate the response of the cells which come into direct contact with the material after the implantation of the joint replacement. The largest differences in cell viability, proliferation and cell cycle changes occurred between Ni 0.5 mM and 1 mM concentrations. Time-dependent localization of Ni in cells showed that there is a continuous transport of Ni ions between the nucleus and the cytoplasm, as well as between the cell and the environment. Moreover, osteoarthritic osteoblasts showed faster changes in concentration and ability to accumulate more Ni, especially in the nucleus, than physiological osteoblasts. The differences in Ni accumulation process explains the higher sensitivity of patient osteoblasts to Ni and may be crucial in further studies of implant-derived cytotoxic effects.

ABSTRACT

The performance and long-term durability of dental implants hinge on the quality of bone integration and their resistance to bacteria. This research aims to introduce a surface modification strategy for zirconia implants utilizing femtosecond laser ablation techniques, exploring their impact on osteoblast cell behavior and bacterial performance, as well as the integral factors influencing the soft tissue quality surrounding dental implants. Ultrafast lasers were employed to craft nanoscale groove geometries on zirconia surfaces, with thorough analyses conducted using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and water contact angle measurements. The study evaluated the response of human fetal osteoblastic cell lines to textured zirconia ceramics by assessing alkaline phosphatase activity, collagen I, and interleukin 1ßsecretion over a 7 day period. Additionally, the antibacterial behavior of the textured surfaces was investigated usingFusobacterium nucleatum, a common culprit in infections associated with dental implants. Ciprofloxacin (CIP), a widely used antibacterial antibiotic, was loaded onto zirconia ceramic surfaces. The results of this study unveiled a substantial reduction in bacterial adhesion on textured zirconia surfaces. The fine biocompatibility of these surfaces was confirmed through the MTT assay and observations of cell morphology. Moreover, the human fetal osteoblastic cell line exhibited extensive spreading and secreted elevated levels of collagen I and interleukin 1ßin the modified samples. Drug release evaluations demonstrated sustained CIP release through a diffusion mechanism, showcasing excellent antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria, includingStreptococcus mutans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, andEscherichia coli.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Transperineal laser ablation (TPLA) is a new minimally-invasive surgical treatment for patients with benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). We report the perioperative and mid-term functional results of the first 100 consecutively patients undergoing TPLA at our institution. METHODS: Clinical data from consecutive patients undergoing TPLA at our institution from April 2021 to July 2023 were prospectively collected. Primary endpoints were the postoperative changes in IPSS, QoL and MSHQ 3-item questionnaires and in Qmax and post-void residual volume (PVR). RESULTS: Overall, 100 consecutive patients underwent the procedure. Median age and prostate volume were 66 (IQR 60-75) years and 50 (IQR 40-70) ml, respectively. In the cohort, 14 (14%) patients had an indwelling catheter and 81 (81%) were under oral BPO therapy at the time of TPLA. Baseline median Qmax (ml/s) and PVR (ml) were 9.1 (IQR 6.9-12) and 90 (IQR 50-150), respectively, while median IPSS and QoL were 18 (IQR 15-23) and 4 (IQR 3-4). At all the follow-up timepoints, the evaluated outcomes on both symptoms and functional parameters showed a statistically significant improvement (p < 0.001). Antegrade ejaculation was preserved in all sexually active patients. No postoperative Clavien-Dindo > 2 complications were recorded. CONCLUSIONS: TPLA represents a safe option for selected well-informed patients swith LUTS due to BPO. Our prospective study confirms the feasibility and favorable perioperative and functional outcomes in a real-world cohort with heterogenous prostate volumes and patient characteristics.

<b>Indroduction:</b> Hemorrhoids often cause pain, and achieving painless outcomes through surgery is challenging. Hemorrhoidal Laser Ablation, a method for treating severe hemorrhoids, has limited documentation in clinical trials.</br> <br><b>Aim:</b> This retrospective study aimed to present our experience with Hemorrhoidal Laser Ablation in symptomatic grade II, III, and IV internal hemorrhoids and evaluate the efficacy and safety of this relatively recent technique.</br> <br><b>Material and methods:</b> The cohort included 138 patients with symptomatic hemorrhoids who underwent Hemorrhoidal Laser Ablation at three different medical centers in 2017-2022. Patients were treated with a 1470 nm diode laser. Data were collected on clinical and perioperative characteristics and outcomes.</br> <br><b>Results:</b> No evidence of intraoperative complications occurred. There was no rectal tenesmus or alteration of defecation habits. Early mild postoperative symptoms were observed for an average of one week after the operation. The plateau of symptom resolution and downgrading of hemorrhoid size reached approximately six months post-procedure. The short- -term recurrence rate was 0.8% within roughly a month after the laser surgery, while the long-term recurrence rate was 5% over up to five years of follow-up. The overall satisfaction rate was 95% with symptomatic relief.</br> <br><b>Conclusions:</b> Hemorrhoidal Laser Ablation is a painless outpatient technique that does not require general anesthesia. It is an easy-to-perform, convenient, safe, and efficient modality in reducing symptoms and complications of grades II, III, and IV internal hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoidal Laser Ablation limits postoperative discomfort and allows the patient to return to daily routines quickly.</br>.

BACKGROUND: Recent biological studies have demonstrated that changes can occur in the cellular genome and proteome due to variations in cell volume. Therefore, it is imperative to take cell volume into account when analyzing a target protein. This consideration becomes especially critical in experimental models involving cells subjected to different treatments. Failure to consider cell volume could obscure the studied biological phenomena or lead to erroneous conclusions. However, quantitative imaging of proteins within cells by LA-ICP-MS is limited by the lack of methods that provide the protein concentration (protein mass over cell volume) rather than just protein mass within individual cells. RESULTS: The combination of a metal tagged immunoprobe with ruthenium red (RR) labelling enables the simultaneous analysis of a specific protein and the cell volume in each cell analyzed by LA-ICP-(Q)MS. The results indicate that the CYP1B1 concentration exhibits a quasi-normally distribution in control ARPE-19 cells, whereas AAPH-treated cells reveal the presence of two distinct cell groups, responding and non-responding cells to an in vitro induced oxidative stress. The labelling of the membrane with RR and the measurement of Ru mass in each cell by LA-ICP-MS offers higher precision compared to manually delimitation of the cell perimeter and eliminates the risk of biased information, which can be prone to inter-observer variability. The proposed procedure is fast and minimizes errors in cell area assignment and offers the possibility to carry out a faster data treatment approach if just relative volumes are compared, which can be advantageous for specific applications. SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY: This work presents an innovative strategy to directly study the distribution and concentration of proteins within individual cells by LA-ICP-MS. This method employs ruthenium red as a cell volume marker and Au nanoclusters (AuNCs) tagged immunoprobes to label the protein of interest. Furthermore, the proposed labelling strategy enables rapid data processing, allowing for the calculation of relative concentrations and thus facilitating the comparison across large datasets. As a proof-of-concept, the concentration of the CYP1B1 protein was quantified in ARPE-19 cells under both control and oxidative stress conditions.

ABSTRACT

Silver nanoparticles are used in laser mass spectrometry to replace organic matrices. Thanks to their unique properties, they enable effective desorption/ionization of samples of various polarities and ionization abilities. This review presents new methods for the synthesis of monoisotopic silver nanoparticles and the use of targets coated with these nanoparticles for qualitative and quantitative analyses of various small-molecule compounds. Additionally, the results of progress in the application of AgNPs for metabolomics analyses were presented.

ABSTRACT

Iron-based superconductors are under study for their potential for high-field applications due to their excellent superconducting properties such as low structural anisotropy, large upper critical fields and low field dependence of the critical current density. Between them, Fe(Se,Te) is simple to be synthesized and can be fabricated as a coated conductor through laser ablation on simple metallic templates. In order to make all the steps simple and fast, we have applied the spark plasma sintering technique to synthesize bulk Fe(Se,Te) to obtain quite dense polycrystals in a very short time. The resulting polycrystals are very well connected and show excellent superconducting properties, with a critical temperature onset of about 16 K. In addition, when used as targets for pulsed laser ablation, good thin films are obtained with a critical current density above 105 A cm-2 up to 16 T.

ABSTRACT

While nano-crystalline diamond (NCD) is a promising engineering composite material for its unique mechanical properties, achieving the ultrahigh surface quality of NCD-based components through conventional grinding and polishing is challenging due to its exceptional hardness and brittleness. In the present work, we experimentally investigate the nanosecond laser ablation-induced graphitization characteristics of NCD, which provides a critical pretreatment method of NCD for realizing its superlative surface finish. Specifically, systematic experimental investigations of the nanosecond pulsed laser ablation of NCD are carried out, in which the characteristics of graphitization are qualitatively characterized by the Raman spectroscopy detection of the ablated area of the microhole and microgroove. Subsequently, the influence of laser processing parameters on the degree and morphological characteristics of graphitization is evaluated based on experimental data and related interpretation, from which optimized parameters for maximizing the graphitization of NCD are then identified. The findings reported in the current work provide guidance for promoting the machinability of NCD via laser irradiation-induced surface modification.

ABSTRACT

We sought to assess the efficacy and safety of endovenous laser ablation utilizing a 980 nm device versus a 1470 nm device in the treatment of lower limb venous insufficiency. We performed a systematic review adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 statement. A research on PubMed, Scopus and Web of science for articles published by January 2024 was conducted. The primary endpoint was great saphenous vein (GSV) and truncal vein occlusion. Eleven studies encompassing 3061 patients and 3193 truncal veins, were included. The 1470 nm device demonstrated superior truncal vein and GSV occlusion outcomes compared to the 980 nm device at the early, one-year, and medium to long-term follow-up intervals. Odds ratios (OR) were 2.79(95%CI:1.31-5.94), 2.22(95%CI:1.21-4.07), and 2.02(95%CI:1.24-3.29) for truncal veins and 2.54(95%CI:1.119-5.41), 2.06(95%CI:1.07-3.95) and 2.04(95%CI:1.25-3.33) for GSV, across the respective intervals. While both devices demonstrated minimal, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), endovenous heat-induced thrombosis (EHIT) ≥ 2, and burn estimates, the 1470 nm device exhibited improved paresthesia, risk ratio (RR), 0.51(95%CI:0.34-0.77) and pain outcomes, standardized mean difference (SMD), -0.62(95%CI:-0.99to-0.25). Subgroup analysis displayed enhanced occlusion outcomes with the 1470 nm device for the six-month and one-year intervals, irrespective of fiber type. Radial fibers were associated with improved paresthesia outcomes (ß=-0.9520,p = 0.03). This review emphasized the enhanced efficacy of the 1470 nm device over the 980 nm device, regardless of fiber type. Radial fibers showed promise for improved paresthesia outcomes, suggesting similar safety profiles for both systems. Conclusive remarks on pain outcomes were impeded by data limitations.

Background/Objective: With the rapid advancement in surgical technologies, new workflows for mandibular reconstruction are constantly being evaluated. Cutting guides are extensively employed for defining osteotomy planes but are prone to errors during fabrication and positioning. A virtually defined osteotomy plane and drilling holes in robotic surgery minimize potential sources of error and yield highly accurate outcomes. Methods: Ten mandibular replicas were evaluated after cutting-guided saw osteotomy and robot-guided laser osteotomy following reconstruction with patient-specific implants. The descriptive data analysis summarizes the mean, standard deviation (SD), median, minimum, maximum, and root mean square (RMS) values of the surface comparison for 3D printed models regarding trueness and precision. Results: The saw group had a median trueness RMS value of 2.0 mm (SD ± 1.7) and a precision of 1.6 mm (SD ± 1.4). The laser group had a median trueness RMS value of 1.2 mm (SD ± 1.1) and an equal precision of 1.6 mm (SD ± 1.4). These results indicate that robot-guided laser osteotomies have a comparable accuracy to cutting-guided saw osteotomies, even though there was a lack of statistical significance. Conclusions: Despite the limited sample size, this digital high-tech procedure has been shown to be potentially equivalent to the conventional osteotomy method. Robotic surgery and laser osteotomy offers enormous advantages, as they enable the seamless integration of precise virtual preoperative planning and exact execution in the human body, eliminating the need for surgical guides in the future.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative blood transfer between twins during laser surgery for twin-twin transfusion syndrome can vary by surgical technique and has been proposed to explain differences in donor twin survival. OBJECTIVE: This trial compared donor twin survival with 2 laser techniques: the sequential technique, in which the arteriovenous communications from the volume-depleted donor to the volume-overloaded recipient are laser-occluded before those from recipient to donor, and the selective technique, in which the occlusion of the vascular communications is performed in no particular order. STUDY DESIGN: A single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial was conducted in which twin-twin transfusion syndrome patients were randomized to sequential vs selective laser surgery. Nested within the trial, a second trial randomized patients with superficial anastomoses (arterioarterial and venovenous) to ablation of these connections first (before ablating the arteriovenous anastomoses) vs last. The primary outcome measure was donor twin survival at birth. RESULTS: A total of 642 patients were randomized. Overall donor twin survival was similar between the 2 groups (274 of 320 [85.6%] vs 271 of 322 [84.2%]; odds ratio, 1.12 [95% confidence interval, 0.73-1.73]; P=.605). Superficial anastomoses occurred in 177 of 642 cases (27.6%). Donor survival was lower in the superficial anastomosis group vs those with only arteriovenous communications (125 of 177 [70.6%] vs 420 of 465 [90.3%]; adjusted odds ratio, 0.33 [95% confidence interval, 0.20-0.54]; P<.001). In cases with superficial anastomoses, donor survival was independent of the timing of ablation or surgical technique. The postoperative mean middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity was lower in the sequential vs selective group (1.00±0.30 vs 1.06±0.30 multiples of the median; P=.003). Post hoc analyses showed 2 factors that were associated with poor overall donor twin survival: the presence or absence of donor twin preoperative critical abnormal Doppler parameters and the presence or absence of arterioarterial anastomoses. Depending on these factors, 4 categories of patients resulted: (1) Category 1 (347 of 642 [54%]), no donor twin critical abnormal Doppler + no arterioarterial anastomoses: donor twin survival was 91.2% in the sequential and 93.8% in the selective groups; (2) Category 2 (143 of 642 [22%]), critical abnormal Doppler present + no arterioarterial anastomoses: donor survival was 89.9% vs 75.7%; (3) Category 3 (73 of 642 [11%]), no critical abnormal Doppler + arterioarterial anastomoses present: donor survival was 94.7% vs 74.3%; and (4) Category 4 (79 of 642 [12%]), critical abnormal Doppler present + arterioarterial anastomoses present: donor survival was 47.6% vs 64.9%. CONCLUSION: Donor twin survival did not differ between the sequential vs selective laser techniques and did not differ if superficial anastomoses were ablated first vs last. The donor twin's postoperative middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity was improved with the sequential vs the selective approach. Post hoc analyses suggest that donor twin survival may be associated with the choice of laser technique according to high-risk factors. Further study is needed to determine whether using these categories to guide the choice of surgical technique will improve outcomes.

Background: The risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after endovenous ablation of varicose veins varies in the literature. Little is known about the characteristics of this complication and associated factors. This study aimed: 1) to study the occurrence of DVT after ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) alone or combined with endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) for lower-limb varicose veins; 2) to identify factors associated with DVT. Patients and methods: The study included all outpatients aged 18 years or older who underwent UGFS and EVLA or UGFS alone at the University Hospital of Zurich between 2011 and 2015. Data were extracted from the hospital electronic medical record. Patients were surveyed about their level of pain after the procedure and their level of satisfaction with the procedure. Duplex ultrasound was used to assess the deep venous system 7-10 days and 6-8 months after the procedure. Regression analysis was used to examine the association of patient and procedure characteristics with the development of DVT. Results: A total of 334 patients (561 procedures performed in 393 different sessions) were included: 73% of the patients underwent combined UGFS and EVLA and 27% underwent UGFS alone. DVT occurred in 24 (7.2%) patients, of whom 88% underwent combined procedures and 17% underwent interventions involving both the great and small saphenous veins on the same session. DVT occurred in 8.2% of patients receiving thromboprophylaxis and in 9.5% of patients not receiving thromboprophylaxis. DVT occurred in 5.2% of women and 11.9% of men. No factors associated with a diagnosis of DVT after intervention were identified. Pain and satisfaction levels did not differ between patients with and without DVT. Conclusions: This study adds to the knowledge of the risk of DVT following UGFS alone or combined with EVLA. Further studies are needed to revise thromboprophylaxis.

ABSTRACT

Direct, rapid and highly sensitive detection of heavy metals in rice is essential to ensure food safety. In this research, a combination of laser ablation and microwave plasma torch optical emission spectrometry (LA-MPT-OES) was proposed. Based on the optimal observation positions, a high sensitivity and direct determination of Cd, Hg, Pb and Cr in rice were realized. The limits of detection (LOD) were 0.97, 0.12, 0.61 and 0.15 µg/kg, respectively, which were reduced by one order of magnitude compared to the optimal observation height. In addition, the LOD was reduced by one to two orders of magnitude compared with the techniques that require sample pre-treatment. Moreover, the results of the Certified Reference Materials and real samples were in agreement with the reference values with a relative error in the range of 0.28% âˆ¼ 14.16%. The results demonstrated that LA-MPT-OES could be a promising tool to detect heavy metals in rice.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) complicates approximately 10%-15% of all monochorionic twin pregnancies. The aim of this review was to evaluate the placental architectural characteristics within TTTS twins following laser and elucidate their impact on fetal outcomes and operative success. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five databases were searched from inception to August 2023. Studies detailing post-delivery placental analysis within TTTS twins post-laser were included. Studies were categorized into two main groups: (1) residual anastomoses following laser and (2) abnormal cord insertion: either velamentous and/or marginal or proximate. The primary outcome was to determine the proportion of TTTS placentas with residual anastomoses and abnormal cord insertions post-laser. Secondary outcomes included assessing residual anastomoses on post-laser fetal outcomes and assessing the relationship between abnormal cord insertion and TTTS development. Study bias was critiqued using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklists and Cochrane risk of bias tool. Random-effects meta-analysis was used, and results were reported as pooled proportions or odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). PROSPERO registration: CRD42023476875. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies, comprising 4013 monochorionic twins, were included for analysis. The proportion of TTTS placentas with residual anastomoses following laser was 24% (95% CI, 0.12-0.41), with a mean and standard deviation of 4.03 ± 2.95 anastomoses per placenta. Post-laser residual anastomoses were significantly associated with intrauterine fetal death (OR, 2.38 [95% CI, 1.33-4.26]), neonatal death (OR, 3.37 [95% CI, 1.65-6.88]), recurrent TTTS (OR, 24.33 [95% CI, 6.64-89.12]), and twin anemia polycythemia sequence (OR, 13.54 [95% CI, 6.36-28.85]). Combined abnormal cord (velamentous and marginal), velamentous cord, and marginal cord insertions within one or both twins following laser were reported at rates of 49% (95% CI, 0.39-0.59), 27% (95% CI, 0.18-0.38), and 28% (95% CI, 0.21-0.36), respectively. Combined, velamentous and marginal cord insertions were not significantly associated with TTTS twins requiring laser (p = 0.72, p = 0.38, and p = 0.71, respectively) versus non-TTTS monochorionic twins. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review to conjointly explore outcomes of residual anastomoses and abnormal cord insertions within TTTS twins following laser. A large prospective study is necessitated to assess the relationship between abnormal cord insertion and residual anastomoses development post-laser.

ABSTRACT

Sampling thin tissue sections with cellular precision can be accomplished using laser ablation microsampling for mass spectrometry analysis. In this work, the use of a pulsed mid-infrared (IR) laser for selecting small regions of interest (ROI) in tissue sections for offline liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is described. The laser is focused onto the tissue section, which is rastered as the laser is fired. The ablated tissue is captured in a microwell array and processed in situ through reduction, alkylation, and digestion with a low liquid volume workflow. The resulting peptides from areas as small as 0.01 mm2 containing 5 ng of protein are analyzed for protein identification and quantification using offline LC-MS/MS.

ABSTRACT

Background: The majority of patients of lung cancer have already lost the chance of surgery at the time of diagnosis. Percutaneous local thermal ablation is a precise minimally invasive technique and a viable alternative to surgical treatment. Compared with radiofrequency ablation and microwave ablation, percutaneous laser ablation for the treatment of lung tumors is less commonly used and reported, especially for primary lung cancer. Case presentation: A 63-year-old male patient with mixed pulmonary nodules selected computed tomography-guided electromagnetic navigation system for percutaneous biopsy and laser ablation therapy. The puncture point was determined through Computed tomography scanning, along with the placement of the electromagnetic navigation system locators. After rapid on-site evaluation and pathological examination of the puncture tissue specimen, the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma was confirmed. A 980-nanometer wavelength semiconductor laser fiber was inserted into the appropriate position guided by the electromagnetic navigation system. Subsequently, a power of 7 watt was applied to ablate the tumor for 30 seconds, then pause for 60 seconds before repeating the procedure. Positron emission tomography-Computed tomography examination was performed 1 month after operation, suggesting complete response of the tumor. Conclusion: Here, we present a case of percutaneous laser ablation treatment for primary lung cancer guided by computed tomography-electromagnetic navigation system. As a more precise, shorter duration, impedance-independent, safe and effective minimally invasive thermal ablation method, it is expected to gain wider application and become a novel alternative for surgical treatment.
