ABSTRACT

Background: Investigating the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) treatment on cardiovascular function and aortic lipid profiles in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) constitutes the foundational focus of this study. The overarching goal is to comprehensively elucidate the alterations brought about by EA treatment and to assess its potential as an alternative therapy for hypertension. Methods: Consecutive EA treatments were administered to SHR, and the effects on systolic blood pressure, cardiac function, and hypertension-related neuronal signals were assessed. Aortic lipid profiles in vehicle-treated SHR and EA-treated SHR groups were analyzed using mass spectrometry-based lipid profiling. Additionally, the expression of Cers2 and GNPAT, enzymes involved in the synthesis of specific aortic lipids, was examined. Results: The study demonstrated that consecutive EA treatments restored systolic blood pressure, improved cardiovascular function, and normalized hypertension-related neuronal signals in SHR. Analysis of the aortic lipid profiles revealed distinct differences between the vehicle-treated SHR group and the EA-treated SHR group. Specifically, EA treatment significantly altered the levels of aortic sphingomyelin and phospholipids, including very long-chain fatty acyl-ceramides and ether phosphatidylcholines. These changes in aortic lipid profiles correlated significantly with systolic blood pressure and cardiac function indicators. Furthermore, EA treatment significantly altered the expression of Cers2 and GNPAT. Conclusions: The findings suggest that EA may influence cardiovascular functions and aortic lipid profiles in SHR.

ABSTRACT

Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease triggered by a novel bunyavirus (SFTSV). Characterized by fever, thrombocytopenia, leukocytopenia, and multiple organ dysfunction manifestations, its primary mode of transmission is through tick bites. Despite the critical role of lipid metabolism in viral infections, the role of lipids in SFTS remains unclear. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 602 patients with SFTS treated at the Shandong Public Health Clinical Center from January 2021 to December 2023. Based on the endpoint events, patients were classified into survival (S) and death (D) groups. The S group was further classified into non-critical (non-C) and critical (C) groups based on symptoms. All patients were followed up for at least 28 days after admission. Propensity score matching, multivariable logistic regression, survival analysis, time trend analysis, and mediation analysis were conducted to assess the association between LDL-C levels and prognosis in SFTS. Results: The serum LDL-C levels on admission were significantly lower in the D and C groups than in the S and non-C groups. The logistic regression models indicated a potential association between LDL-C levels and a poor prognosis in SFTS. The restricted cubic spline showed a unidirectional trend between LDL-C levels and mortality, with a cutoff value of 1.59 mmol/L. The survival analysis revealed higher and earlier mortality in the low-LDL-C group than in the high-LDL-C group. The trends over 28 days post-admission showed that the serum LDL-C levels gradually increased in SFTS, with a favorable prognosis. Finally, the mediation analysis indicated that low LDL-C levels are associated with mortality through poor hepatic, cardiac, and coagulation functions. Conclusion: Low LDL-C levels are potentially associated with a poor prognosis in SFTS.

ABSTRACT

Metabolic syndrome poses a significant health concern, particularly among postmenopausal women who are vulnerable to its adverse effects. Emerging evidence suggests a potential role of vitamin D in mitigating metabolic syndrome risk factors, prompting interest in its supplementation as a therapeutic intervention. This comprehensive review examines the impact of vitamin D supplementation on metabolic syndrome variables in postmenopausal women. Through a systematic synthesis of existing literature, we assess the evidence supporting the beneficial effects of vitamin D on insulin sensitivity, lipid profiles, and inflammation markers in this population. While findings suggest potential benefits, uncertainties remain regarding optimal dosage and duration of supplementation. Implications for clinical practice underscore the importance of assessing vitamin D status and considering supplementation as part of a comprehensive approach to metabolic health management. Furthermore, public health initiatives promoting adequate vitamin D intake may help mitigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and associated complications. However, further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms, establish optimal supplementation protocols, and explore potential interactions with other nutrients or medications. Long-term randomized controlled trials are needed to evaluate the sustained effects of vitamin D supplementation on metabolic health outcomes in postmenopausal women.

ABSTRACT

Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) is responsible for a spectrum of nosocomial/antibiotic-associated gastrointestinal diseases that are increasing in global incidence and mortality rates. The C. difficile pathogenesis is due to toxin A and B (TcdA/TcdB), both causing cytopathic and cytotoxic effects and inflammation. Recently, we demonstrated that TcdB induces cytopathic and cytotoxic (apoptosis and necrosis) effects in enteric glial cells (EGCs) in a dose/time-dependent manner and described the underlying signaling. Despite the role played by lipids in host processes activated by pathogens, to counter infection and/or induce cell death, to date no studies have investigated lipid changes induced by TcdB/TcdA. Here, we evaluated the modification of lipid composition in our in vitro model of TcdB infection. Apoptosis, cell cycle, cell viability, and lipidomic profiles were evaluated in EGCs treated for 24 h with two concentrations of TcdB (0.1 ng/mL; 10 ng/mL). In EGCs treated with the highest concentration of TcdB, not only an increased content of total lipids was observed, but also lipidome changes, allowing the separation of TcdB-treated cells and controls into different clusters. The statistical analyses also allowed us to ascertain which lipid classes and lipid molecular species determine the clusterization. Changes in lipid species containing inositol as polar head and plasmalogen phosphatidylethanolamine emerged as key indicators of altered lipid metabolism in TcdB-treated EGCs. These results not only provide a picture of the phospholipid profile changes but also give information regarding the lipid metabolism pathways altered by TcdB, and this might represent an important step for developing strategies against C. difficile infection.

BACKGROUND: Obesity has become a prevalent issue worldwide, leading to various complications such as hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems. Statins, as FDA approved anti-hyperlipidemic drugs, still pose some concerns upon their administration. Recently, researchers have looked for natural products as an alternative to manage hyperlipidemia and obesity. AIM: This work aimed to study the hypolipidemic effect of Lepidium sativum garden cress (GC) from different preparations; orally administered seeds, and hydrogel, in comparison to atorvastatin. METHODS: GC hydrogel was prepared from the GC aqueous extract and pharmaceutically evaluated for its pH, spreadability, seeds content, homogeneity, rheology, and in vitro release. The rat's body weight, blood glucose levels, total lipid profile, and liver biomarkers were evaluated on obese rats for one month. In addition, the histopathology study was also performed. RESULTS: GC hydrogel had acceptable pharmaceutical properties and showed a sustained release performance over 24 h. Oral and topical GC significantly reduced the lipid profiles, blood sugar and ALT, AST levels more than the negative control group and comparable to atorvastatin. It was found that oral GC showed a significant effect on the percentage decrease in the rat's body weight than the applied hydrogel. Histopathology study revealed a better outcome in the histological structure of pancreas and liver compared with rats feed on high fat diet post-treatment for one month. CONCLUSION: GC orally administered, or topically applied hydrogel could be a promising, safe alternative formulation to atorvastatin in managing hyperlipidemia and normalizing body weight of obese rats.

ABSTRACT

Comprehensive lipid and volatile compound analyses were performed with squids collected from four varied geographical locations to discriminate the regional characteristics. A total of 1442 lipid molecules and 110 volatiles were detected in the squid muscle samples. There were significant differences in the lipid profiles between Argentine squid (Illex argentinus, AGT), North Pacific Ocean squid (Ommastrephes Bartram, NPO), Equatorial squid (Dosidicus gigas, EQ), and Peruvian squid (Dosidicus gigas, PR) muscle. Phosphatidylcholines (14.64%), triacylglycerols (12.42%), and ceramides (10.97%) were the main lipid components. The contents of polyunsaturated fatty acid in phospholipids and in glycerolipids were 30.35-52.05% and 18.11-25.15%, respectively. The volatiles in squids exhibited significant regional variation; 1-pentanol and 1-octanol, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and terpinen-4-ol, 2,7-ethyl-1-hexanol, 3-methy-1-butanol and 2-propyl-1-pentanol were identified as characteristic flavor compounds in AGT, NPO, EQ, and PR, respectively. Sphingomyelin, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and ceramide were strongly correlated with volatiles in squid muscle. Our study is a reference for the lipid nutritional value and flavor compounds of squids.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: People with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are highly susceptible to the development of cardiovascular diseases. Previous studies have suggested that the application of vitamin D may offer potential benefits in improving lipid profiles, but these effects remain controversial. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis focused on the effects of vitamin D supplementation on serum lipid profiles in people with T2D. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effects of vitamin D supplementation on lipid profiles and published before September 19th, 2023, were identified in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. This review protocol was registered in the PROSPERO (CRD42023461136). The random-effects model was employed to estimate unstandardized mean differences (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The quality of studies was assessed by the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool 2. Results: Overall, 20 RCTs involving 1711 participants were included. Results indicated that vitamin D supplementation significantly improves serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (MD: 1.63 mg/dL, 95% CI: 0.19 to 3.08, P = 0.03), and triglyceride (TG) levels (MD: -8.56 mg/dL, 95% CI: -15.23 to -1.89, P = 0.01). However, vitamin D supplementation failed to improve low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels and total cholesterol (TC) levels. Subgroup analyses and meta-regressions suggested that higher doses of vitamin D supplementation and shorter duration of intervention were more likely to have favorable effects on lipid profiles. Moreover, participants with lower baseline BMI and higher serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels exhibited greater improvements in lipid profiles following vitamin D supplementation. Conclusions: This meta-analysis highlighted the effects of vitamin D supplementation on improving serum HDL and TG levels while not exhibiting significant improvements in LDL and TC levels. ABSTRACT

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are widely used tubular-structured nanomaterials (NMs), but their cardiovascular effects are not clear. This study compared the effects of MWCNTs and HNTs on lipid profiles in mouse plasma and gene expression profiles in aortas and hearts. Mice were intravenously injected with 50 µg NMs, once a day, for 5 days. Then, the plasma was collected for lipidomics analysis, and aortas and hearts were collected for RNA-sequencing analysis. While MWCNTs or HNTs did not induce obvious pathological changes in aortas or hearts, the lipid profiles in mouse plasma were altered. Further analysis revealed that MWCNTs more effectively upregulated sphingolipids and sterol lipids, whereas HNTs more effectively upregulated glycerophospholipids and fatty acyls. Consistently, RNA-sequencing data indicated that MWCNTs and HNTs altered signaling pathways related with lipid synthesis and metabolism, as well as those related with endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes and autophagy, more significantly in aortas than in hearts. We further verified the changes of proteins involved in autophagic lipolysis, that MWCNTs were more effectively to suppress the autophagic biomarker LC3, whereas HNTs were more effectively to affect lipid metabolism proteins. These results may provide novel understanding about the influences of MWCNTs and HNTs on lipid profiles and lipid signaling pathways in cardiovascular systems. Importantly, previous studies considered HNTs as biocompatible materials, but the results from this study suggested that both MWCNTs and HNTs were capable to affect lipid profiles and autophagic lipolysis pathways in cardiovascular systems, although their exact influences were different.

BACKGROUND: Recently, Serum vitamin D (Vit. D) levels evaluation and the use of Vit. D supplements have increased substantially. There is no specific guideline for the duration of Vit. D supplementation, so yet Vit. D supplementation duration has remained a critical and controversial issue. This study aimed to determine the vit. D supplementation duration to reach an adequate or optimal Vit. D status and its effect on lipid profile. METHODS: In this longitudinal study, 345 women with different status of Vit. D levels were enrolled and followed up for one year. Eligible participants received 50,000 IU Vit. D3 (cholecalciferol) once a month for 12 consecutive months. The serum Vit. D levels and lipid profiles were measured at baseline, 3rd, 6th, and 12th months after the intervention. Participants were categorized based on Vit. D level at baseline into deficiency (< 20 ng/mL), inadequate (20-30 ng/mL), and adequate (> 30 ng/mL) groups, and the data were compared at different times between the three groups. RESULTS: Three deficiency (n = 73), inadequate (n = 138) and adequate (n = 134) groups of participants were followed. In all participants the average amount of Vit. D level changes were 8 ng/mL after one year of supplementation. The mean changes of serum Vit. D level in 6th and 12th months vs. 3th month was as below: In deficiency group: 4.08 ± 0.85 and 10.01 ± 1.02 ng/mL; (p < 0.001), in inadequate group: 3.07 ± 0.59 and 7.26 ± 0.78 ng/mL; (p = 0.001) and in adequate group: 2.02 ± 0.88 and 6.44 ± 1.005 ng/ml; (p = 0.001). Lipid profiles were improved in three groups. So, the mean changes of lipid profiles at the end of the study comparing with the baseline were: -5.86 ± 2.09, -7.22 ± 1.43 and - 6.17 ± 1.72 (mg/dl) for LDL (p < 0.05); -12.24 ± 3.08, -13.64 ± 3.21 and - 17.81 ± 2.94 (mg/dl) for cholesterol (p < 0.05) in deficiency, inadequate and adequate groups, respectively. For triglyceride, the mean changes were - 13.24 ± 5.78 and - 15.85 ± 7.49 (mg/dl) in deficiency and adequate groups, respectively (p < 0.05). Although the triglyceride decreased in the inadequate group at the end of the study but this difference was not significant (p = 0.67). CONCLUSION: Taking of 50,000 IU Vit. D 3 monthly for 12 months resulted in reaching its level to adequate level in both deficiency and insufficient groups; however, in the adequate group its level did not reach above than 50 ng/mL. Therefore, 50,000 IU Vit. D3 supplementation monthly for one year can have beneficial effects on lipid profiles and there is no risk of toxicity in healthy women.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although studies have assessed the association of metals and bisphenols with lipid metabolism, the observed results have been controversial, and limited knowledge exists about the combined and interactive effects of metals and bisphenols exposure on lipid metabolism. METHODS: Plasma metals and serum bisphenols concentrations were evaluated in 888 participants. Multiple linear regression and logistic regression models were conducted to assess individual associations of 18 metals and 3 bisphenols with 5 lipid profiles and dyslipidemia risk, respectively. The dose-response relationships of targeted contaminants with lipid profiles and dyslipidemia risk were captured by applying a restriction cubic spline (RCS) function. The bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model was used to assess the overall effects of metals and bisphenols mixture on lipid profiles and dyslipidemia risk. The interactive effects of targeted contaminants on interested outcomes were explored by constructing an interaction model. RESULTS: Single-contaminant analyses revealed that exposure to iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), strontium (Sr), and tin (Sn) was associated with elevated lipid levels. Cobalt (Co) showed a negative association with high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol AF (BPAF) were associated with decreased HDL-C levels, with nonlinear associations observed. Vanadium (V), lead (Pb), and silver (Ag) displayed U-shaped dose-response relationships with most lipid profiles. Multi-contaminant analyses indicated positive trends between contaminants mixture and total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C). The interaction analyses showed that Se-Fe exhibited synergistic effects on LDL-C and non-HDL-C, and Se-Sn showed a synergistic effect on HDL-C. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggested that exposure to metals and bisphenols was associated with changes in lipid levels, and demonstrated their combined and interactive effects.

BACKGROUND: Lack of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids during the period of maternity drastically lowers the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) level in the brain of offspring and studies have demonstrated that different molecular forms of DHA are beneficial to brain development. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of short-term supplementation with DHA-enriched phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) on DHA levels in the liver and brain of congenital n-3-deficient mice. RESULTS: Dietary supplementation with DHA significantly changed the fatty acid composition of various phospholipid molecules in the cerebral cortex and liver while DHA-enriched phospholipid was more effective than DHA triglyceride (TG) in increasing brain and liver DHA. Both DHA-PS and DHA-PC could effectively increase the DHA levels, but DHA in the PS form was superior to PC in the contribution of DHA content in the brain ether-linked PC (ePC) and liver lyso-phosphatidylcholine molecular species. DHA-PC showed more significant effects on the increase of DHA in liver TG, PC, ePC, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and PE plasmalogen (pPE) molecular species and decreasing the arachidonic acid level in liver PC plasmalogen, ePC, PE and pPE molecular species compared with DHA-PS. CONCLUSION: The effect of dietary interventions with different molecular forms of DHA for brain and liver lipid profiles is different, which may provide theoretical guidance for dietary supplementation of DHA for people. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Epidemiological evidence indicates that exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is associated with certain metabolic diseases. However, the relationship between PAHs and serum lipid profiles in exposed subjects remain unknown. Herein, the associations of multiple (8) urinary hydroxylated PAHs (OH-PAHs) in workers of coking (n = 655) and non-ferrous smelting (n = 614) industries with serum lipid levels (marking lipid metabolism) were examined. Multivariable linear regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression, and quantile g-computation were used. Most urinary OH-PAHs were significantly higher (p < 0.001) in coking workers than in non-ferrous smelting workers. In workers of both industries, OH-PAH exposure was associated with elevated levels of serum total cholesterol, total triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein, as well as reduced high-density lipoprotein levels. Specifically, urinary 4-hydroxyphenanthrene was significantly positively associated with serum total cholesterol, total triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein levels in non-ferrous smelting workers; however, the completely opposite association of 4-hydroxyphenanthrene with these lipid levels was observed in coking workers. The results of this pioneering examination suggest that exposure to OH-PAHs may contribute to dyslipidemia in coking and non-ferrous smelting workers, and distinct patterns of change were observed. Further prospective studies involving larger sample sizes are needed to further validate the findings.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia with high morbidity and mortality implications. Several studies have described a paradoxical inverse relationship between serum cholesterol and the risk of AF, but it remains unknown whether remnant cholesterol (RC) is associated with AF incidence. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to prospectively investigate the association between RC and AF. METHODS: A total of 392,783 participants free of AF at baseline from the UK Biobank were included for the analysis. Cox proportional hazards model, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity analyses were used to evaluate the independent association between RC levels and the risk of new-onset AF. Furthermore, we performed a discordance analysis by using the median cutoff points of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and RC. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 12.8 years (interquartile range 12.0-13.6 years), a total of 23,558 participants experienced incident AF. Compared with the highest RC level, the lower RC level was associated with an increased risk of AF incidence (quartile 1 vs quartile 4: hazard ratio 1.396; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.343-1.452). The results remained robust across a series of sensitivity analyses. In the discordance analyses, a significantly higher risk of AF was observed in participants with discordant low RC/high LDL-C levels than in those with concordant high RC/LDL-C levels. In the low LDL-C group, RC reduction even contributed to an additional 15.8% increased rate of incident AF (low RC/low LDL-C: hazard ratio 1.303; 95% CI 1.260-1.348 vs high RC/low LDL-C: hazard ratio 1.125; 95% CI 1.079-1.172). CONCLUSION: Low RC levels were associated with an increased risk of incident AF independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors.

Studies investigating the effects of flaxseed oil on lipid profiles, weight loss, and inflammatory markers have produced inconsistent results. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to explore the impact of flaxseed oil on these parameters in hemodialysis patients. The study protocol was registered online (PROSPERO number: CRD42023484076). The meta-analyses showed a significant decrease in triglyceride (TG) levels (WMD = -85.78 mg/dL, 95% CI: -155.24 to -16.32, I2 = 98.32%) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (WMD = -2.66 mg/L, 95% CI: -4.07 to -1.24, I2 = 92.26%) following consumption of flaxseed oil. Subgroup analyses revealed significant changes in LDL-C, HDL-C, and TC levels only in trials utilizing a dosage higher than 10 g per day and using ground flaxseed oil. Based on the results, flaxseed oil improves CRP and TG levels, and higher doses positively affect lipid profiles. However, it has no significant effect on anthropometric measures.

ABSTRACT

Background/Objectives: Lipid metabolism plays an important role in maternal health and fetal development. There is a gap in the knowledge of how lipid metabolism changes during pregnancy for Black women who are at a higher risk of adverse outcomes. We hypothesized that the comprehensive lipidome profiles would show variation across pregnancy indicative of requirements during gestation and fetal development. Methods: Black women were recruited at prenatal clinics. Plasma samples were collected at 8-18 weeks (T1), 22-29 weeks (T2), and 30-36 weeks (T3) of pregnancy. Samples from 64 women who had term births (≥37 weeks gestation) were subjected to "shotgun" Orbitrap mass spectrometry. Mixed-effects models were used to quantify systematic changes and dimensionality reduction models were used to visualize patterns and identify reliable lipid signatures. Results: Total lipids and major lipid classes showed significant increases with the progression of pregnancy. Phospholipids and glycerolipids exhibited a gradual increase from T1 to T2 to T3, while sphingolipids and total sterol lipids displayed a more pronounced increase from T2 to T3. Acylcarnitines, hydroxy acylcarnitines, and Lyso phospholipid levels significantly decreased from T1 to T3. A deviation was that non-esterified fatty acids decreased from T1 to T2 and increased again from T2 to T3, suggestive of a potential role for these lipids during the later stages of pregnancy. The fatty acids showing this trend included key fatty acids-non-esterified Linoleic acid, Arachidonic acid, Alpha-linolenic acid, Eicosapentaenoic acid, Docosapentaenoic acid, and Docosahexaenoic acid. Conclusions: Mapping lipid patterns and identifying lipid signatures would help develop intervention strategies to reduce perinatal health disparities among pregnant Black women.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to cigarette smoke introduces a large amount of nicotine into the bloodstream through the lungs. So, smoking can be a risk factor for many diseases. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of active and passive cigarette smoke on the blood lipid profile and dyslipidemia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 5052 individuals who participated in the recruitment phase of the Shahedieh cohort study. A logistic regression model was used to investigate the relationship between smoking exposure status and lipid profiles. RESULTS: The prevalence of abnormal low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), abnormal HDL-C, abnormal total cholesterol (TC), abnormal triglyceride (TG), and dyslipidemia were 254 (5.00%), 562 (11.10%), 470 (9.30%), 1008 (20.00%), and 1527 (30.20%), respectively. Adjusting for confounders, it was observed that current smokers had higher odds of having abnormal HDL-C [OR (95% CI), 2.90 (2.28-3.69)], abnormal TG [OR (95% CI), 1.71 (1.38-2.13)] and dyslipidemia [OR (95% CI), 1.86 (1.53-2.25)]. Ex-smokers also had greater odds of abnormal HDL-C [OR (95% CI), 1.51 (1.06-2.16)] compared to non-smokers who were not exposed to cigarette smoke. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicated that current smokers had higher TG and lower HDL. So, necessary measures should be taken to reduce smoking. The findings also showed that the prevalence of abnormal TG and HDL in ex-smokers was lower than in current smokers. Therefore, the existence of incentive policies to quit smoking seems necessary.

ABSTRACT

This research investigates the gender-specific associations of uroguanylin levels with various health-related parameters in Iraqi adults. The results revealed significant differences between genders in food style preferences and waist circumference (WC) risk. Notably, uroguanylin exhibited distinct correlations with low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), body mass index (BMI), and WC in females and males, indicating potential gender-specific effects on lipid metabolism, glucose regulation, and adiposity. A total of 140 Iraqi adults (73 females and 67 males) were recruited into the study. Physical activity levels, food style preferences, WC risk, and BMI subgroups, were compared between genders. Additionally, participants' characteristics, including age, height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and uroguanylin concentrations, were analyzed. Significant gender differences were observed in food style preferences, with a higher proportion of males preferring fast food, with a greater percentage of females classified as having a high risk, females exhibited lower height and weight compared to males. HbA1c levels were significantly lower in females, whereas high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were significantly higher in females than in males. Uroguanylin concentrations were also significantly lower in females compared to males. Uroguanylin shows a moderately negative correlation with LDL cholesterol in females but not in males. Furthermore, a strong negative association between uroguanylin and HbA1c in females indicated improved glycemic control with higher uroguanylin levels, whereas an opposite trend was observed in males. No significant association was observed between uroguanylin and BMI in females, a significant positive correlation was found in males. For WC, a weak negative correlation was noted in females, whereas a moderately negative correlation was observed in males. These contrasting correlations imply potential gender-specific effects of uroguanylin on adiposity and body fat distribution.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Probiotic administration is a promising therapy for improving conditions in NAFLD patients. This network meta-analysis aimed to compare and estimate the relative effects of probiotic interventions and identify the optimal probiotic species for the treatment of NAFLD (Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease) patients. METHODS: The PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched from inception to 29 January 2024 to identify RCTs that were published in English. The GRADE framework was used to assess the quality of evidence contributing to each network estimate. RESULTS: A total of 35 RCTs involving 2212 NAFLD patients were included in the analysis. For primary outcomes, Lactobacillus + Bifidobacterium + Streptococcus exhibited the highest probability of being the finest probiotic combination in terms of enhancing acceptability as well as reducing AST (SMD: -1.95 95% CI: -2.90, -0.99), ALT (SMD = -1.67, 95% CI: -2.48, -0.85), and GGT levels (SMD = -2.17, 95% CI: -3.27, -1.06). In terms of the secondary outcomes, Lactobacillus + Bifidobacterium + Streptococcus was also the best probiotic combination for reducing BMI (SMD = -0.45, 95% CI: -0.86, -0.04), LDL levels (SMD = -0.45, 95% CI: -0.87, -0.02), TC levels (SMD = -1.09, 95% CI: -1.89, -0.29), and TNF-α levels (SMD = -1.73, 95% CI: -2.72, -0.74). CONCLUSION: This network meta-analysis revealed that Lactobacillus + Bifidobacterium + Streptococcus may be the most effective probiotic combination for the treatment of liver enzymes, lipid profiles, and inflammation factors. These findings can be used to guide the development of a probiotics-based treatment guideline for NAFLD since there are few direct comparisons between different therapies.

OBJECTIVE: Atherosclerotic carotid artery stenosis is a significant contributor to ischemic strokes, and carotid artery stenting (CAS) has emerged as a pivotal treatment option. However, in-stent restenosis (ISR) remains a concern, impacting the long-term patency of CAS. This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of non-traditional lipid profiles, including the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), in ISR development. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study involved patients presenting at a tertiary healthcare facility with severe carotid artery disease between 2016 and 2020 who subsequently underwent CAS. A total of 719 patients were included in the study. The study cohort was divided into ISR and non-ISR groups based on restenosis presence, confirmed by angiography following ultrasonographic follow-up assessments. Non-traditional lipid indices, such as AIP, atherogenic index (AI), and lipoprotein combined index (LCI), were evaluated along with traditional risk factors. RESULTS: During a 24-month follow-up, ISR occurred in 4.03% of patients. To determine the predictors of restenosis, three different models were constructed in multivariate analysis for non-traditional lipid indices. Multivariate analysis revealed AIP as a robust independent predictor of ISR (OR: 4.83 (CI 95 % 3.05-6.63, p < .001). Notably, AIP demonstrated superior predictive accuracy compared to AI and LCI, with a higher Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.971. CONCLUSION: Non-traditional lipid profiles, especially AIP, were found to be associated with an increased risk of ISR and may serve as predictors of ISR in patients undergoing CAS.

Children with perinatally acquired human immunodeficiency virus (PHIV) are growing into adulthood with HIV and treatment-associated comorbidities, such as dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. HIV is identified as independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The hypothesis behind increased CVD risk associated with HIV includes vascular inflammation, dyslipidemia and combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) metabolomic toxicity. To investigate differences in lipid profiles and pathophysiological mechanisms of CVD risk in adolescents with PHIV, we compared the plasma lipidome of PHIV adolescents and HIV-negative controls. We additionally investigated the influence of current cART regimens and increased lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) levels on the plasma lipidome. We included 20 PHIV-infected adolescents and 20 HIV-negative controls matched for age, sex, ethnic origin and socio-economic status. Plasma lipidome was measured using Thermo Scientific Ultimate 3000 binary high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-mass spectrometry. We evaluated the plasma lipidome in PHIV adolescents using different cART regimens (including those known to be associated with lipid alterations). The median age was 17.5 years (15.5-20.7) and 16.5 years (15.7-19.8) for PHIV adolescents and controls, respectively. Of PHIV adolescents, 45% used a non-nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI)-based (25%) or protease inhibitor (PI)-based (20%) cART regimen. In this pilot study, we observed no significant differences between lipidomic profiles between PHIV adolescents and controls. We observed no differences in the plasma lipidome in participants with increased versus normal Lp(a) levels. Different cART regimens appear to influence chain length differences in the plasma lipidome of PHIV adolescents; however, the significance and causality of this observation remains undetermined. Further research on the influence of cART on lipid composition could further identify these alterations.
