ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study presents the German version of the Brief Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales (BANPS), which includes an additional subscale for the dimension LUST. The BANPS represents a shortened version of the Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales (ANPS), a self-report instrument to assess individual dispositions toward primary emotional systems as proposed by Jaak Panksepp. Methods: In a large sample (N = 926), the reliability and various facets of validity of the German translation of the BANPS were examined together with the newly included LUST scale. The BANPS-GL was related to the Big Five Inventory (BFI) and Sexual Sensation Seeking Scale (SSSS) and analyzed via confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: Overall, the BANPS-GL exhibited reliabilities ranging from McDonald's ω = 0.70 (CARE) to α = 0.86 (SADNESS) and plausible correlations with external criteria. For CFA a correlated 7-factor model demonstrated good fit [TLI = 0.95; RMSEA = 0.04 (90% CI: 0.04, 0.05); SRMR = 0.06]. A similar fit was demonstrated for a 2-higher-factor model [TLI = 0.93; RMSEA = 0.05 (90% CI: 0.05, 0.06); SRMR = 0.07]. Conclusion: In broad agreement with the results of the original English version, the BANPS-GL showed good reliability and acceptable factorial validity, and overall improved the psychometric properties of the original long form. Finally, the inclusion of the dimension LUST allows for a complete coverage of the primary emotion dispositions as originally conceptualized by Panksepp.

ABSTRACT

Background: In recent years, there have been many studies using the Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales (ANPS) to investigate individual differences in primary emotion traits. However, in contrast to other primary emotion traits proposed by Jaak Panksepp and colleagues, there is a considerable lack of research on the LUST (L) dimension - defined as an individual's capacity to attain sexual desire and satisfaction - a circumstance mainly caused by its exclusion from the ANPS. Therefore, this study aims to take a first step toward the development of a standardized self-rate measurement for the L-disposition. For this purpose, two versions of the L-scales (L-12 and L-5) were developed and evaluated regarding reliability and aspects of validity. Materials and Methods: After a pilot study (N = 204; female: 81%) with an initial 20-item pool item reductions were conducted. This led to the construction of a 12-item (L-12) version and a 5-item version (L-5), which were assessed in a second sample consisting of 371 German-speaking healthy adults (58.50% female) aged 18-69 years (M = 28; SD = 9.75). Aspects of external validity were assessed by investigation of correlations with the ANPS, psychiatric symptoms (Brief Symptom Inventory-18), attachment security (Adult Attachment Scales) and personality functioning (Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnostics Structure Questionnaire). To evaluate structural validity, both L-scales were investigated via confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: Cronbach's α indicated excellent internal consistency regarding L-12 (α = 0.90), while L-5 showed acceptable reliability (α = 0.82). CFA of a bifactor model of the L-12 indicated excellent model fit. Moreover, an excellent model fit was observed regarding a single factor model of L-5. For both scales small to moderate positive correlations were observed with SEEKING, PLAY, and secure attachment, while they exhibited small to moderate negative correlations with SADNESS, insecure attachment, lower personality functioning, and increased psychiatric symptom load. Conclusion: Both newly developed scales exhibit satisfying psychometric properties, indicating high reliability, good structural validity and plausible correlations with external criteria. Hence, this study poses an important step toward the operationalization of the LUST concept. However, more research is needed in particular with respect to the scale's external validity and its applicability in clinical populations.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the current paper is to report a new case of sexual murder involving human arson and summarize the literature on the phenomenon of sexual homicide. The present case study is unprecedented in Greece and a rarity in international literature due to the fact that the victim suffered genital mutilation and incineration while still alive. The evaluation consisted of 176 articles; 53 were reviewed by the authors. The results revealed sparse, but significant, research findings. The authors discuss the limitations regarding research, incidence of the phenomenon, crime-scene patterns, offender characteristics (killing methods, motive inferences, sociodemographic data, classifications, psychopathology, modus operandi), and victim selection. The incidence of the phenomenon is unclear (1-4%) due to non-standardized criteria. It is an expression of displaced anger or sexual sadism and/or a way to elude detection (ancillary benefit). Most offenders (in their first kill) and victims were in their late 20s to early 30s and belong to Caucasian populations. Personal weapons were commonly used against women, strangulation is the prevalent killing method against children, and firearms against men. Most of the sexual homicide perpetrators are non-psychotic at the time of the attack, but experience personality pathology, primitive defenses, pathological object relations, and withdrawal into fantasy in order to deal with social isolation.

ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the importance of the work of writing in schizophrenia. It takes as a starting point the Lacanian formulation of the schizophrenic as someone whose organ functions are not given by any established discourse. The hypothesis to the effect that work with the letter may allow the treatment of excessive jouissance in schizophrenia, is analyzed through writings by Robert Walser, a schizophrenic, which demonstrate the feasibility of building a body through the process of writing.

ABSTRACT

The phenomenon of chronic pain has led researchers to broaden their understanding of pain beyond the sensory sphere and recognize its sociocultural and psychological dimensions. For psychoanalysts, pain is evidence of a drive in the body. The problem of pain and its relation to jouissance are discussed from the point of view of Freudian and Lacanian metapsychology. From the Freudian perspective, pain is governed by the principle of pleasure-displeasure, whereas from Lacan's point of view, jouissance refers to what lies beyond this principle. In other words, it is related to the death drive.

ABSTRACT

This article discusses the symptom of phobia in psychoanalytic terms and the question of how sexuality functions in the formation of phobic symptoms, that is, between the imaginary effects of love and the fields of enjoyment and desire. Based on the premise that the phallus symbolizes an irreducible lack, phobia is considered a response by the subject entrenched between love in flight and the encounter with jouissance. The case of Little Hans positioned phobia as a response to the dissymmetry of love and the insistence of the drives.

ABSTRACT

In the clinic the addictive object takes, several times and apparently, the form of the fetish object. However, its peculiarities show that there is a diference. The compulsive character leads to another logic, even though it shares a common place. The present paper has its main aim to establish which are the differences and singularities that can be found between the fetish and the object of consumption, focusing on the lust economy.

ABSTRACT

The following paper is framed in the P805 UBACyT Investigation Project called " Scope and current state of the concept of compulsion. Its relationship with addictions". Its aim is to make an approach of the topic of compulsion in kleptomania, specifically, in the cloth theft by women, trying to contribute to the notions of compulsion and subjective responsibility. Another proposed aim which will enrich this approach is to distinguish between erotic passion for cloth, typically feminine, and male fetichism. To fulfill both objectives we will work on the movie called " The peasure of the silk" by Yvon Marciano and the freudian, winicottian and lacanian psychoanalytical contributions will be our theoretical tools.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The intensity of falling in love is expressed through sexual longing and is focused on pleasures of the body. Fresh fruits and vegetables and other elements of nature-wind, birds, foliage-form part of the setting of seduction. Being in love with another woman makes the entire world beautiful. But the lesbian paradise is eventually eclipsed by bitter realities that intrude upon the relationship-the ever-present ex-lover (still in the picture), family ties (with homophobic overtones), business connections (that imperil lesbian economic independence), and issues of commitment and honesty that eventually lead to betrayal and a bittersweet breakup. Based on correspondence originally written in Spanish, "Neurotic Love Letters" is a testament to an unfortunate fact-that all the love and lust between two women cannot always conquer dubious circumstances and harsh realities unique to lesbian relationships.
