ABSTRACT

This study explores vulnerability narratives used in relation to older adults and others during the COVID-19 pandemic. A mixed-method content analysis was conducted of 391 articles published in two major newspapers in Canada and the USA during the first wave of the pandemic. The findings indicated that during the early months of the pandemic, limited attention was directed towards its impact on older adults or other 'vulnerable' subpopulations in both countries. Where evident, intrinsic (individual-level) risk factors were most consistently used to frame the vulnerability of older adults. In contrast, vulnerability was more likely to be framed as structural with regard to other subpopulations (e.g., ethno-racial minorities). These narratives also differed somewhat in Canadian and US newspapers. The framing of older adults as intrinsically vulnerable reflects ageist stereotypes and promotes downstream policy interventions. Greater attention is needed to the role of structural factors in influencing pandemic-related outcomes among older adults.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the prevalence and impact of midline catheters inserted by the Infusion and Vascular Access Team using echo-guided puncture compared to conventional intra-venous strategies (peripheral venous catheter insertion by hospitalization nurses) in a nephrology and kidney transplant unit.Material and Method: This is a retrospective observational study. Three periods were compared: pre-implementation, implementation, and consolidation of the Infusion and Vas-cular Access Team. All patients admitted to the Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation hospitalization units requiring the placement of peripheral vascular catheters and midline were included. The prevalence of venous access, dwell time, and reasons for removal (complications) were analyzed. Resultados: The incidence of peripheral vascular catheters decreased while that of midlines progressively increased in all three periods. Moreover, there were no differences in the mean dwell time of peripheral vascular catheters, whereas the dwell time of midlines increased. A higher and variable rate of complications was confirmed in peripheral vascular catheters in all periods, while in midlines, the complication rate was lower and more stable. Conclusions: Implementing an intravenous therapy program in nephrology patients has allowed for minimizing the num-ber of venous devices per patient, resulting in a reduction in punctures during hospitalization and a decrease in com-plications associated with venous cannulation (lower mor-bidity). ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Responsible media reporting is an accepted strategy for preventing suicide. In 2015, suicide prevention experts launched a media engagement initiative aimed at improving suicide-related reporting in Canada; its impact on media reporting quality and suicide deaths is unknown. METHOD: This pre-post observational study examined changes in reporting characteristics in a random sample of suicide-related articles from major publications in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) media market. Articles (n = 900) included 450 from the 6-year periods prior to and after the initiative began. We also examined changes in suicide counts in the GTA between these epochs. We used chi-square tests to analyse changes in reporting characteristics and time-series analyses to identify changes in suicide counts. Secondary outcomes focused on guidelines developed by media professionals in Canada and how they may have influenced media reporting quality as well as on the overarching narrative of media articles during the most recent years of available data. RESULTS: Across-the-board improvement was observed in suicide-related reporting with substantial reductions in many elements of putatively harmful content and substantial increases in all aspects of putatively protective content. However, overarching article narratives remained potentially harmful with 55.2% of articles telling the story of someone's death and 20.8% presenting an other negative message. Only 3.6% of articles told a story of survival. After controlling for potential confounders, a nonsignificant numeric decrease in suicide counts was identified after initiative implementation (ω = -5.41, SE = 3.43, t = 1.58, p = 0.12). CONCLUSIONS: We found evidence that a strategy to engage media in Canada changed the content of reporting, but there was only a nonsignificant trend towards fewer suicides. A more fundamental change in media narratives to focus on survival rather than death appears warranted.

ABSTRACT

Background Among the various mechanical and biological properties of luting cement, the most important are its resistance to disintegration, degradation, and stability in the oral cavity. The sorption and solubility of cement alter the mechanical properties by impeding the half-life of the filling. It also leads to variations in dimensions, discoloration, and margin breakage. It is, therefore, essential to choose a low-solubility cement since there is always an interaction between teeth and restorative margins. The aim of this study is to assess and compare the solubility and sorption values of three different luting cements in three liquid media. Materials and methods Three luting cements were used for the investigation. Disc-shaped specimens of the cement, which were of 10 mm diameter and 2 mm height, were prepared. The sample included a total of 126 disc-shaped specimens made up of three materials, glass ionomer cement (GIC), resin cement, and resin-modified GIC, which were used in three liquid media (14 of each material in each medium). Fourteen specimens of each material were placed in glass vials containing 20 ml of each medium: distilled water, artificial saliva, and carbonated water. The samples were then put in an incubator at 37 °C. The measurements and masses of the samples were documented on days one, three, seven, 14, 21, 28, and 35. The samples were taken out of the solution after five weeks and stored in a desiccator with calcium sulphate for another five weeks. The weight and dimensional changes were estimated on days one, three, seven, 14, 21, 28, and 35. The values of water sorption (WSO) and solubility (WSL) were estimated. To determine the mean and standard deviation of each cohort, descriptive statistics were employed. Utilizing the Shapiro-Wilkinson test, the normality was determined. An independent test was used to determine the difference between all pairs of groups, while one-way ANOVA, Dunn test, and post hoc analysis were used to establish the distinction between the three groups. Results One-way ANOVA showed that significant differences existed among the groups: resin cement showed the least sorption and solubility, resin-modified GIC showed the highest solubility in distilled water (0.40 ± 0.03), and GIC showed the highest solubility in both artificial saliva (0.36 ± 0.03) and carbonated water (0.04 ± 0.05). Conclusion Considering the experimental outcomes and the limitations of an in vitro investigation, it was concluded that in the complex setting of the oral environment, this selection procedure is crucial for maintaining mechanical strength and for the long lifespan of dental restorations.

ABSTRACT

Is a general theory of memory possible? What contribution can sociology make to this vast scientific project? Two original contributions are presented and discussed in this article: (1) the concept of collective memory (Maurice Halbwachs); (2) the concept of social memory (Niklas Luhmann). The author proposes some important theoretical clarifications. First, memory is neither a stock nor a collection (of past states or events) but rather a continuous operation of sorting between remembering and forgetting. Secondly, collective memory is not social memory: indeed, the former is a specific operation of psychic systems whereas the latter is an operation of communication, specific to social systems. In the particular case of the attacks of November 13, 2015 in Paris, the author shows the function of social memory that the mass media system fulfills and how these operations of filtering meaning condition the construction of traumatic memories.

ABSTRACT

Gaps in communication training have been identified in Canadian and international academic and practicum dietetics programs. A workshop was developed to pilot supplementary media training to nutrition students/trainees studying in Nova Scotia. Students, interns, and faculty from two universities participated in the workshop. Data on perceived learning, media knowledge/skill use, and workshop feedback were collected immediately post-workshop using a mixed-form questionnaire. A modified questionnaire was administered eight months post-workshop to obtain information on utility of the perceived acquired knowledge/skills. Closed-ended responses underwent descriptive analysis, while open-ended responses underwent thematic analysis. Twenty-eight participants completed the questionnaire post-workshop, and six completed it at follow-up. All participants rated the workshop positively (7-point Likert scale) and reported learning something new (perceived). Perceived learning emphasized general media knowledge/skills and communication skills. Follow-up data suggested participants had applied perceived media knowledge/skills in message development and media and job interviews. These data suggest that nutrition students/trainees may benefit from supplementary communications and media training and provide a stimulus for ongoing curriculum review and discussion.

ABSTRACT

The Mediterranean is one of the most overfished seas of the world where mesopredators are severely threatened. The trophic strategies of four pelagic species that inhabit the Adriatic Sea (Scomber spp. and Trachurus spp.) were investigated through an integrated approach of stomach contents and stable isotopes analyses. Our study demonstrated that Scomber colias feeds mainly on strictly pelagic prey, with fish larvae as a secondary prey in the Southern Adriatic Sea, while S. scombrus feeds on prey belonging to higher trophic levels. Smaller specimens of Trachurus mediterraneus have a diet mainly based on pelagic prey, while larger fishes rely on prey such as benthic decapods, showing an ontogenetic shift in the diet of the species. Trachurus trachurus shows a preference for offshore and deeper areas and a diet such as that of its congeneric, but no clear ontogenetic shift was observed. This spatial segregation allows the co-existence of these two species of Trachurus. Scomber colias mainly inhabits southern areas and S. scombrus shows a preference for the northern sectors. This latitudinal gradient avoids the overlap of their trophic niches. Bayesian mixing models confirmed that the trophic niches of these species only partially overlap in the middle of the trophic web.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: YouTube has remained the most commonly used online platform and is increasingly used for health education. Although videos related to diabetic retinopathy on YouTube are abundant, there is still a paucity of research regarding the detailed analysis of their quality and content. PURPOSE: This study aims to assess the content, sources, and overall usefulness of information published on the YouTube platform regarding diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS: The YouTube website was systematically searched using the keyword "diabetic retinopathy" between August 14 and September 29, 2021. RESULTS: A total of 465 videos related to DR were included in our analysis. Of these videos, 215 (46.4%) videos were released from the United States. The highest number of videos were uploaded by medical websites (32.9%), followed by hospitals/medical centers (23%). Educational videos on DR including basic information, complications, treatment, staging and retinal photographs were the most frequent category. Videos containing basic information, complications and videos with animation on DR received the highest numbers of views (2,768,062, 2,361,999, and 1,946,586, respectively). Videos uploaded by hospitals/medical centers received a high mean number of views, likes, and dislikes. Overall, 72.5% of videos on DR published on YouTube were considered largely useful. CONCLUSIONS: Videos published by medical websites, hospitals/medical centers and those pertaining to basic information, complications, and animation on DR were the most attractive. Hence, these types of videos can be targeted to increase awareness about DR.

ABSTRACT

It is already known that babies are often exposed to screens during their first year of life. This exposure is mediated by adults, who hand their smartphones or other devices to children for several reasons. What do parents and school caregivers think about a baby's screen exposure? To explore the perceptions of caregivers of babies up to 3 years old about how new technologies pervade family and school routines, affecting children's development, and to provide an opportunity for listening, psychoeducation and reflections, a clinical intervention was proposed. The intervention took place in a kindergarten school located in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, RS - Brazil, during three group sessions, using a conversation wheel. The group intervention enabled caregivers to discuss an important theme, which affects the baby's development and relationships.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: This paper aims to examine the psychometric properties, i.e., validity, reliability, factorial invariance, and latent mean differences based on gender, of the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, PSPS, in the Ecuadorian context. Method: A sample consisting of 597 Ecuadorian undergraduates participated in the study. Results: Confirmatory Factor Analysis supported a 14-item and three-dimensional model of the scale: Perfectionistic Self-Promotion, Nondisplay of Imperfection, and Nondisclosure of Imperfection. This model presented configural; measurement, i.e., metric, strong, and strict; as well as structural invariance across genders. Discriminant validity was observed by analysing correlations between PSPS factors and perfectionism traits. Males exhibited higher latent means of Perfectionistic Self-Promotion and also Nondisplay of Imperfection than females. Conclusions: The Spanish-translated and brief version of the PSPS represents a reliable and valid tool for assessing perfectionistic self-presentation in Ecuador.

ABSTRACT

Web 2.0 is characterized by the development of the Internet from its initial static content to a dynamic and participatory content, and by the large place taken by social networks. The growing interest of health actors for information and communication via these new media is gradually but lastingly modifying the practice of nephrology. These developments require nephrologists to understand the issues, rules and risks associated with these digital tools. The present article summarizes the main practical aspects of communication with patients and health professionals and addresses the important issue of the digital identity of the caregiver in the new field of connected nephrology.

Introduction: Venous ulcers are lesions developed mainly on the lower limbs. They cause continuous and disabling pain, impair mobility, alter self-image, and interfere with daily life activities. Venous ulcers are serious. They are caused by chronic venous insufficiency and permanent venous hypertension. People suffering from venous ulcers should receive comprehensive nursing care that contributes to self-care. Objective: To describe the strategies nursing professionals should consider for promoting self-care in people with venous ulcers. Method: Integrative review of the literature. Databases and electronic resources were searched: Medline using PubMed, Health, Epistemonikos, and SciELO. Research and review articles related to the study problem, published in English, Portuguese, or Spanish between 2010 and 2020, were included. This is a risk-free study, and copyrights were respected. Results: A sample of 41 publications was analyzed. The main themes derived from the analysis were the nursing care process and self-care, getting familiar with venous ulcers and therapeutic options, knowledge of compression therapy, and practice of healthy lifestyles. Conclusions: Nursing care for patients with venous ulcers should begin by recognizing a person from a holistic perspective and reciprocally with their environment. This approach implies a comprehensive care process that goes beyond the ulcer and values patients as active subjects of care so that they become familiar with their wounds and detect signs of improvement or warning. They can also know about compression therapy and therapeutic options and take the practice of healthy lifestyles into their daily lives.

ABSTRACT

This study explored how a subsection of Canadians perceive older adults' vaccines through a qualitative analysis of comments posted in response to national online news articles. We used reflexive thematic analysis to analyse 147 comments from 31 news article comments sections published between 2015 and 2020 from five different national online news sources (CBC, National Post, Global News, Globe & Mail, and Huffington Post Canada) that focused on three older adults' diseases and vaccines: influenza, pneumococcal pneumonia, and herpes-zoster. Three themes encompassed the similarities and differences in how these three diseases were discussed: (1) the importance of personal experiences on stated stance in vaccine uptake or refusal, (2) questioning vaccine research and recommendations, and (3) criticisms of the government's unequal vaccine opportunities across different Canadian provinces. Our findings identified that perceptions regarding older adult vaccination were dependent on the vaccine type, and, therefore, we make suggestions for future researchers to build on our findings, particularly the need not to treat the research subject of "older adults' vaccines" as one entity. Gaining a better understanding of how older adults' vaccines are perceived in Canada will enable public health professionals to develop effective communication strategies that should ultimately improve vaccination rates for older adults.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Contraceptive prevalence is low in Mali. The information provided by the media men can help to increase or decrease the use of contraceptive methods. OBJECTIVE: To study the knowledge, attitudes and practices of Bamako media Men on family planning. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We carried out a descriptive cross-sectional study with prospective data collection from June 1 to August 30, 2019. It concerned journalists and presenters of 15 radio and 6 televisions in Bamako. RESULTS: During the 3 months, 615 media Men agreed to participate in this study. These are men and women from 36 to 45 years old in 37.2% of cases, married in 81.3% of cases. The radio with 85.5% was their main source of information on family planning. They all knew at least one contraceptive method. The best-known methods were pills (94.3%), injectables (57%) and implants (49.1%). They were in favor of the practice of family planning in 77.2% of cases, 76.9% had already used a method and 56.7% had already hosted a program on family planning. CONCLUSION: Media men are essential in the transmission of information. The quality of the information provided by these Media men can be influenced by their personal perceptions and attitudes. Their better involvement in the promotion of family planning can help to increase contraceptive prevalence.

Abstract Integrated analysis of urban morphology and functional characteristics allows for a better understanding of the structure and intra-urban dynamics of intermediate cities, indicating a series of elements that demonstrate associations between intra-urban space and the intensity and quality of the relationship of a given centrality with its surroundings. Based on the case study of Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, we present a methodological proposal for evaluating morphological and functional aspects of intermediate cities using information from the Demographic Census and other free geospatial datasets (i.e. digital terrain model and satellite images). We identified the spatial distribution of the types of occupation, such as (a) density of residential type buildings, (b) trade and services and (c) under construction. Furthermore, we quantified and evaluated the characteristics (income and age structure) of the expansion vectors of Montes Claros. In Montes Claros, we identified the formation of less developed intra-urban centralities compared to other development hubs in Minas Gerais (Juiz de Fora, Uberlândia, Pouso Alegre, among others). In the city, the concentration of functions in two centralities (the main center and the most prominent subcenter) increases socio-spatial segregation, given the absence of important centralities close to areas with the greatest peripheral growth between 2000 and 2010.

ABSTRACT

Abstratct This article investigates relationships between the incidence of cervical cancer (CCI) and the water components and quality indicators, in the municipalities of Mato Grosso do Sul, between 2014 and 2017, by statistical (Pearson's Determinant) and spatial (k-means Clustering) correlation. There was a greater statistical response of CCI in relation to the average tariff of the practiced supply (−36.28%) and water (−34.15%) services; the number of their systematic interruptions (28.3%) and outages (22.28%); the average per capita consumption of water (20.74%); and the number of services performed (−17.98%), all answers under p-value ≤ 0.001. In Costa Rica, city with the highest average CCI, the spatial clustering identified a greater effect of those interruptions (z-value = 8.741) and outages (z = 7.6097); whereas, in Rochedo, also under high CCI, the analyses showed greater effect with non-standard results for total coliforms (z = 8.6803) and turbidity (z = 5.7427), under a statistical correlation of 12.05% (p-value = 0.032) and 15.18% (p-value = 0.007), respectively. Data from SISAGUA revealed the presence of coliforms and high levels of turbidity, for example, in Antônio João and Tacuru, cities with high average ICC. We recommend further investigation into the relationships presented here between CCI and water.

ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving area that offers unparalleled opportunities of progress and applications in many healthcare fields. In this review, we provide an overview of the main and latest applications of AI in nutrition research and identify gaps to address to potentialize this emerging field. AI algorithms may help better understand and predict the complex and non-linear interactions between nutrition-related data and health outcomes, particularly when large amounts of data need to be structured and integrated, such as in metabolomics. AI-based approaches, including image recognition, may also improve dietary assessment by maximizing efficiency and addressing systematic and random errors associated with self-reported measurements of dietary intakes. Finally, AI applications can extract, structure and analyze large amounts of data from social media platforms to better understand dietary behaviours and perceptions among the population. In summary, AI-based approaches will likely improve and advance nutrition research as well as help explore new applications. However, further research is needed to identify areas where AI does deliver added value compared with traditional approaches, and other areas where AI is simply not likely to advance the field. Novelty: Artificial intelligence offers unparalleled opportunities of progress and applications in nutrition. There remain gaps to address to potentialize this emerging field.

ABSTRACT

Systematic, in-depth exploration of news media coverage of aggression and older adults remains sparse, with little attention to how and why particular frames manifest in coverage across differing settings and relationships. Frame analysis was used to analyze 141 English-language Canadian news media articles published between 2008 and 2019. Existing coverage tended towards stigmatizing, fear-inducing, and biomedical framings of aggression, yet also reflected and reinforced ambiguity, most notably around key differences between settings and relations of care. Mainstream news coverage reflects tensions in public understandings of aggression and older adults (e.g., as a medical or criminal issue), reinforced in particular ways because of the nature of news reporting. More nuanced coverage would advance understanding of differences among settings, relationships, and types of actions, and of the need for multifaceted prevention and policy responses based on these differences.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Examine the association between news media use frequency during the COVID-19 pandemic and the scale of psychological distress in pregnant women, considering this distress known harmful effects on the fetus development. METHOD: Pregnant women living in Quebec province (N = 1014) have been recruited in April 2020 through social media, while a state of health emergency was declared. Participants were divided in 4 groups, according to self-reported frequency of news media consulting (little or none; one time a day; several times a day; constant). They filled measures of depressive symptoms, negative affects, post-traumatic stress symptoms and anxiety specific to COVID-19. Instrument scores were grouped under a unique factor of psychological distress. RESULTS: An ANCOVA controlling for age, gestational age, education level, household annual revenue and a diagnosed mental disorder present at the time of participation in study shows that news media exposure frequency is significantly associated with psychological distress severity in pregnant women, during COVID-19 pandemic, F(3,998) = 27.02, p < 0.001, η2 partial = 0.08. Given the mean comparisons a posteriori, higher psychological distress rates are found as soon as news media exposure exceeds once a day (effect sizes between 0.38 and 0.81). CONCLUSIONS: The more pregnant women report consulting the news media during the COVID-19 pandemic, the more likely they are to exhibit psychological distress. Results provide one of the first empirical supports to recommendations of World Health Organization, Canada government and psychiatric associations that encourage population to limit their news media consulting during the COVID-19 pandemic.
