ABSTRACT
This paper presents the use of U-series radionuclides 238U and 234U to evaluate the biogeochemical disequilibrium in soil cover under a contrasted soil-water regime. The approach was applied in three profiles located in distinct topographical positions, from upslope ferralitic to downslope hydromorphic domain. The U fractionation data was obtained in the samples representing the saprolite and the superficial and subsuperficial soil horizons. The results showed a significant and positive correlation between U and the Total Organic Carbon (TOC). Soil organic matter has accumulated in soil due to hydromorphy. There is no evidence of positive correlation between U and Fe, as expected in lateritic soils. The advance of the hydromorphy on Ferralsol changes the weathering rates, and the ages of weathering are discussed as a function of the advance of waterlogged soil conditions from downslope. Also, the bioturbation could represent the other factor responsible to construct a more recent soil horizon.
ABSTRACT
We conducted an inventory of the Trichoptera fauna of Serra do Tepequém, Amajari municipality (county), Roraima state, Brazil. Adult caddisflies were collected with Pennsylvania and Malaise traps operated beside three 2nd-order streams near the summit of Serra do Tepequém. We identified 27 Trichoptera species (including two new species), all representing new records for the state of Roraima, five of these species are recorded for the first time in Brazil. In this study, two new species are described: Marilia mahedae sp. nov. differs from all other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: Segment X subquadrate in dorsal view, bipartite, membranous mesally, with short apical V-shaped incision; preanal appendages wide at base in lateral view; endotheca with an acute subapicoventral projection, directed anterad in lateral view; phallotheca very short. Polyplectropus tepequemensis sp. nov. differs from all other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: Posterior margin of sternum IX nearly straight; slightly sclerotized intermediate appendages broad in the basal 2/3 and abruptly slender apically; two phallic ducts, each with an endothecal spine. With this inventory the number of Trichoptera species for Roraima state increased from 37 to 65.

Responsible ownership for pet animals and society education are practices that aim for the promotion of animal welfare. Looking to solve the problem of stray cats population at Marília/SP Municipal Wood, São Paulo, Brazil, it was settled a partnership between the Marília University and the town council to develop the project Cat Jump Project. This one was performed from 2012 to 2014, and included the population awareness towards the damages that the abandoned animals could cause in this place, as well as the implications of these animals health that could also affect human health. Thus, it was performed a survey togetherwith the Environmental Education Center, located in the wood. One of the aspects that the project executed was the community education action, which reached 18,100 children of elementary schools that were attended in spot visits, received a printed material and attended a theater staging and special workshops. Another performed action was the implantation of the stray cats population control with an animal castration-donation program, which in the analyzed period achieved 151 animals, 86 males (57%) and 65 females (43%), considering that all of them were also vaccinated against rabies, dewormed and received a microchip identification. The obtained results were an important decrease in the number of stray cats found in the wood, and also the return of wild native animal species, especially birds that could be seen more frequently in the wood. This project is one more confirmation that veterinary medicine can play and important role in the one health modern view, in other words, animal, human and environment health.(AU)

The trophic ecology of the aquatic insect fauna has been widely studied for the Northern temperate zone. However, the taxa originally classified within a given particular trophic group in temperate ecosystems, do not necessarily exhibit the same dietary profile beyond its geographic limits. Since, the trophic ecology of caddisfly larvae is largely incomplete in the Neotropical Region, the present work aims to describe feeding habits inferred from quantitative analysis of data taxonomically resolved at the species level. For this, the feeding habits of three Trichoptera species Marilia cinerea, M. elongata and M. flexuosa were recorded in the Yungas forests of Argentina and Bolivia. A total of 15 larvae of each species were sampled from 13 different streams were selected for gut content analysis. The ingested material was extracted from the foregut and midgut by using ventral dissection of thorax. For each species, mandibles were dissected, mounted in glycerin and illustrated in order to highlight morphological differences between these mouth pieces purportedly associated to the dietary behavior of individuals, and their habitats. The niche overlap was estimated through Schoeners method. The diet analysis revealed that M. cinerea, M. elongata and M. flexuosa feed on the same food items, but through different patterns of preferences. Larvae of M. cinerea were collected on both emerging surfaces of rocks on which a thin layer of running water flows and streams sliding areas with stony bottoms attached to the rock surfaces. They displayed a gut content consisting predominantly of invertebrate vestiges and have strong mouthparts provided of large molar areas; this allowed us to allocate the species within the functional group of predators. M. elongata feeds mainly on fine particulate material, its mouthparts are scoop-shaped and occurs in areas of low flow; this set of features is linked to a collector-gatherer strategy. Finally, larvae of M. flexuosa have been primarily assigned to the functional group of shredders and secondarily to the collector-gatherer class. They inhabit sandy bottoms of mountain streams, have strong scoop-shaped mouthparts and show a diet dominated by leaf litter and fine particulate material. We concluded that the functional group assignment to the genus level for Marilia is not recommended, and further studies at species level are necessary. Rev. Biol. Trop.62 (2): 543-550.

Cats are assuming an important role in the human-animal relationship and in this condition, highlights the care with the zoonoses such as Toxoplasmosis, which has felines as the only definitive hosts in its life cycle. Accordingly, we have evaluated the occurrence of anti-T. gondii in 50 stray cats of Municipal Grove in Marilia / SP, divided into three age groups: A) six months to two years, B) upper two and lower five years old and C) five years old or more, using the serological examination by immunofluorescence with indirect cutoff of 16. Of the 50 samples analyzed, 13 were reagents (26%), nine in the 1:16 dilution (18%), three in 1:64 (6%) and one in 1: 256 (2%). Among the positive, 17.85% (5/28) were females and 36.36% (8/22) of males. Regarding age, six of 17 cats from Group B and seven of 15 from group C have shown antibodies against coccidia and none of the Group A was positive. The statistic demonstrates significant difference compared to the form of reactive serum samples dichotomized as well as a significant association between variables seropositivity and age, reflecting higher rate of infection in older animals. It is expected an awareness about the disease, and promotion of preventive actions directed to the public health.(AU)
