ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Gay and bisexual men are at an increased risk for eating disorders (EDs) and muscle dysmorphia (MD) compared with their heterosexual counterparts. Existing dissonance-based (DB) EDs prevention programs for this population have been evaluated in the United States; however, these programs have not been evaluated in the Brazilian context. Thus, we investigated the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of a DB ED prevention program (i.e., the PRIDE Body Project) among Brazilian cisgender gay and bisexual men. METHOD: Eligible men were randomly assigned to either a DB intervention (n = 74) condition or an assessment-only control (AOC) condition (n = 75). Participants completed measures assessing ED and MD risk and protective factors at baseline, post-intervention, 1-month, 6-month, and 1-year follow-up. Those in the intervention condition also completed acceptability measures. RESULTS: Feasibility and acceptability ratings were highly favorable. Regarding efficacy, post-intervention results were not significant, except for self-objectification, which showed a significantly greater decrease in the DB condition compared with the AOC condition at all time-points of follow-ups (Cohen's d = -0.31 to -0.76). At follow-up, the DB condition showed significantly greater decreases in appearance-ideal internalization, drive for muscularity, self-objectification, ED and MD symptoms at 1-month, 6-month, and 1-year follow-ups (d = -0.33 to -0.92) compared with the AOC condition. Significant increases were observed in the DB compared with the AOC condition for body appreciation at 1-month, 6-month, and 1-year follow-ups (d = 0.31-0.81). DISCUSSION: Results support the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of the PRIDE Body Project up to 1-year in Brazilian cisgender gay and bisexual men. ABSTRACT

Previous body image research often grouped both gay and bisexual men into a single category: sexual minoritised men, limiting our understanding of how sexual identity influences body image. However, there is strong reason to believe that bisexual and gay men experience distinct body image concerns. Here, we explored motivations to alter one's leanness and muscularity, as well as (dis)satisfaction with body fat, muscularity, height and penis size, and functionality appreciation across gay, bisexual, and straight cisgender men. We sampled 378 white participants aged 18 to 85 (nbisexual = 125, ngay = 128, nstraight = 125). We found that bisexual men were significantly less motivated to be lean and showed lower muscularity dissatisfaction relative to gay men but showed comparable levels to straight men. Our findings demonstrate that despite research perceiving the body image of bisexual and gay men as homogenous, they experience differences in their body image concerning leanness and muscularity dissatisfaction. Future body image research should incorporate this understanding by not artificially grouping bisexual and gay cisgender men and instead acknowledging the potential uniqueness in their experiences.

ABSTRACT

This study described muscularity teasing in both men and women and explored its associations with eating and body image disturbances in adults from China. A total of 900 Chinese adults (50% women) were recruited online. Correlation and regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between muscularity teasing and a battery of measures on eating and body image disturbances. Gender differences in the associations were examined. Men reported more muscularity teasing than women (31.6% men vs. 15.6% women; χ2(1,N = 900) = 31.99, p < .001). Muscularity teasing was significantly and positively correlated with all measures in both men and women. Muscularity teasing explained significant, unique variance in all measures for men and women, except for body fat dissatisfaction in women, beyond covariates (i.e., age, body mass index, and weight teasing). The relationships between muscularity teasing and eating and body image disturbances were generally stronger in men than women. Findings further suggest that muscularity teasing is an important factor related to eating and body image disturbances in men and women, but muscularity teasing might be more detrimental to men's eating behaviors and body image. Future research is needed to further explore the directionality and mechanisms of the links between muscularity teasing and eating and body image disturbances.

ABSTRACT

Families play a key role in establishing eating habits of children, yet whether families continue to influence eating behaviors of young adults remains an open question. It is also not clear whether associations between family variables (i.e., support and pressure) are similar for adult sons and daughters regarding eating pathology. The present cross-sectional study examined family correlates on disordered eating, body satisfaction, and drive for muscularity. The aim was to examine the associations of family support and family pressure with eating pathology, and to determine whether gender moderated the associations. Among 365 undergraduates (Mage = 18.9 years, 62 % Caucasian, 48 % female), neither family pressure nor family support were significantly associated with the drive for muscularity, whereas both were associated with disordered eating, and family pressure was associated with body satisfaction. Gender moderated the relationship of family pressure and body satisfaction (p = 0.03) and, unexpectedly, the relationship of family support and disordered eating (p = 0.02). Contrary to prediction, family pressure had stronger associations with body satisfaction for men (i.e., men had a more robust association (beta = -0.31, p < .001) than women (beta = -0.19, p = 0.004)). For women, the relationship of family support and disordered eating was not significant (beta = 0.07, p = 0.452); but, was significant for men (beta = -0.25, p < .001). These findings suggest that family pressure and support are associated with eating pathology among young adults, and that in some instances the associations were larger for men, thus highlighting the importance of including men in eating pathology research. Pending replication, these results suggest that family attitudes, behaviors, and support may be necessary topics to address when designing prevention programs for young adults.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between lumbar erector muscle atrophy and global sagittal imbalance in lumbar degenerative kyphosis (LDK) and with postoperative proximal junctional kyphosis. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Lumbar erector muscle atrophy has been studied in LDK. However, its role in the compensatory mechanism is still under intense discussion, and the role of erector spinae (ES) muscle is always overlooked. METHODS: This study enrolled 51 patients with LDK out of 382 patients with adult degenerative spinal deformity. Baseline information was reviewed including demographic data and complications. Sagittal spinopelvic alignments and global imbalance parameters were assessed on full-length X-ray images of the spine. Muscularity and the fatty infiltration area of the ES and multifidus (MF) were measured at the L4/5 level on preoperative magnetic resonance image to evaluate the lumbar erector muscle atrophy. Stratification by sagittal vertical axis (SVA) was performed: group 1 with SVA <100 mm and group 2 with SVA >100 mm, and these groups were compared. Spearman correlation and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to analyze and define risk factors of postoperative proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK). RESULTS: Group 2 had lower ES and MF muscularity than group 1. ES muscularity correlated with SVA (r=-0.510, p<0.003), lumbar lordosis (r=-0.415, p<0.018), and postoperative PJK (r=-0.508, p<0.022). MF muscularity did not correlate with the above parameters. Multivariable logistic regression analysis verified ES muscularity (odds ratio [OR], 0.001; p<0.039) and SVA (OR, 1.034; p<0.048) as the risk factors for postoperative PJK. CONCLUSIONS: ES atrophy, besides the MF, is an important predictor in distinguishing decompensated LDK from well-compensated ones. It plays an important role in compensatory mechanism, not only correlates with global sagittal imbalance but also ties to PJK after deformity corrective surgery.

Exposure to body-positive imagery plays a positive role in women's body image. However, literature has not examined if this is the case for men too. In this study (N = 207), we examined the impact of idealized body and body-positive imagery on both men's and women's body satisfaction and body image concerns. Participants were asked to report their positive and negative mood, body satisfaction, drive for thinness, and drive for muscularity before and after being exposed to either control (landscapes and animals), idealized body, or body-positive imagery. Results showed that women were overall more dissatisfied with their bodies and reported a stronger negative mood and a higher drive for thinness than men. Men, instead, reported a higher drive for muscularity. Exposure to idealized body imagery decreased positive mood and body satisfaction in both men and women. In contrast, exposure to body-positive imagery increased body satisfaction and decreased the drive for thinness in both men and women. Drive for muscularity was not affected by the type of imagery. The findings show that idealized body and body-positive imagery have similar effects on men and women and showcase the importance of considering the effects of body-positivity content for both genders.

ABSTRACT

While the neural mechanisms underpinning the perception of muscularity are poorly understood, recent progress has been made using the psychophysical technique of visual adaptation. Prolonged visual exposure to high (low) muscularity bodies causes subsequently viewed bodies to appear less (more) muscular, revealing a recalibration of the neural populations encoding muscularity. Here, we use visual adaptation to further elucidate the tuning properties of the neural processes underpinning muscle perception for the upper and lower halves of the body. Participants manipulated the apparent muscularity of upper and lower bodies until they appeared 'normal', prior to and following exposure to a series of top/bottom halves of bodies that were either high or low in muscularity. In Experiment 1, participants were adapted to isolated own-gender body halves from one of four conditions; increased (muscularity) upper (body half), increased lower, decreased upper, or decreased lower. Despite the presence of muscle aftereffects when the body halves the participants viewed and manipulated were congruent, there was only weak evidence of muscle aftereffect transfer between the upper and lower halves of the body. Aftereffects were significantly weaker when body halves were incongruent, implying minimal overlap in the neural mechanisms encoding muscularity for body half. Experiment 2 examined the generalisability of Experiment 1's findings in a more ecologically valid context using whole-body stimuli, producing a similar pattern of results as Experiment 1, but with no evidence of cross-adaptation. Taken together, the findings are most consistent with muscle-encoding neural populations that are body-half selective. As visual adaptation has been implicated in cases of body size and shape misperception, the present study furthers our current understanding of how these perceptual inaccuracies, particularly those involving muscularity, are developed, maintained, and may potentially be treated.

ABSTRACT

Beef genetics are used with increasing frequency on commercial dairies. Although use of beef genetics improves calf value, variability has been reported in beef × dairy calf phenotype for traits related to muscularity and carcass composition. The objective of this study was to characterize morphometric and compositional differences between beef, beef × dairy, and dairy-fed cattle. Tested treatment groups included Angus-sired straightbred beef steers and heifers (A × B; n = 45), Angus × Holstein crossbreds (A × H; n = 15), Angus × Jersey crossbreds (A × J; n = 16), and straightbred Holsteins (H, n = 16). Cattle were started on trial at mean BW of 302 ±â€…29.9 kg and then fed at 196 ±â€…3.4 d. Morphometric measures were recorded every 28 d during the finishing period, ultrasound measures were recorded every 56 d, and morphometric carcass measures were recorded upon slaughter. Muscle biopsies were collected from the longissimus thoracis of a subset of steers (n = 43) every 56 d. Strip loins were collected from carcasses (n = 78) for further evaluation. Frame size measured as hip height, hip width, and body length was greatest for H cattle (P < 0.05), and A × H cattle had greater hip height than A × J cattle (P < 0.05). Relative to BW as a percentage of mature size, ribeye area of all cattle increased at a decreasing rate (negative quadratic term: P < 0.01), and all ultrasound measures of fat depots increased at an increasing rate (positive quadratic term: P < 0.01). Although no difference was observed in muscle fiber area across the finishing period from the longissimus thoracis (P = 0.80), H cattle had a more oxidative muscle phenotype than A × B cattle (P < 0.05). Additionally, H cattle had the smallest area of longissimus lumborum in the posterior strip loin, greatest length-to-width ratio of longissimus lumborum in the posterior strip loin, and least round circumference relative to round length (P < 0.05). Beef genetics improved muscularity in portions of the carcass distal to the longissimus thoracis.


Divergent selection of beef and dairy breeds has caused differences in skeletal size and muscularity. When calves from dairy systems enter the beef supply chain, variability in mature size and carcass composition are introduced. The objective of this study was to characterize morphometric differences in cattle populations with different proportions of beef and dairy genetics. Body measurements confirmed differences in mature size of beef-type cattle, dairy-type cattle, and beef × dairy cattle; Holstein influence was associated with greater skeletal growth. With advancing maturity, the rate of muscle accretion decreased quadratically while the rate of fat accretion increased quadratically. Although muscularity across all cattle types was similar in the longissimus near the last rib, differences were observed in the posterior end of the strip loin, the forearm, and the round. Differences in mature size, muscularity, and steak dimensions were observed between beef-type cattle, dairy-type cattle, and beef × dairy cattle.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: After the original 15-item Drive for Muscularity Scale developed by McCreary et al. in 2004, a more theoretically based scale that replicates the original DMS subscales with a better conceptual clarity and a shorter number of items, i.e., the DMS-9, has recently been developed by Chaba et al. in 2018. We sought to contribute to the literature especially under the Arab context, by investigating the psychometric properties of an Arabic translation of the DMS-9 in a sample of Arabic-speaking Lebanese university students of both genders. METHODS: University students (N = 402; 55.2% females) from multiple universities in Lebanon were invited to fill the survey in this cross-sectional designed study (December 2022 and January 2023). Our sample was chosen using the snowball technique; a soft copy of the questionnaire was created using google forms software, and an online approach was conceived to proceed with the data collection. RESULTS: Using an Exploratory Factor Analysis-to- Confirmatory Factor Analysis strategy, we found that the original two-factor model of the DMS proposed in the parent study was adequately replicated in our sample. The two DMS-9 factor scores showed very good McDonald's omega values (ω > 0.8). Findings also showed that gender invariance was achieved at the configural, metric, and scalar levels. Additionally, drive for muscularity scores correlated in the expected way with other study variables, providing support for the convergent and divergent validity of the Arabic DMS-9. Specifically, we found that greater drive for muscularity attitudes and behaviors significantly correlated with more severe muscle dysmorphic symptoms, inappropriate eating attitudes, muscle bias internalization, and lower body appreciation. CONCLUSION: Findings preliminarily suggest that the Arabic DMS-9 is psychometrically sound and suitable tool to assess the drive for muscularity construct among Arabic-speaking community adults. Making the Arabic DMS-9 available will hopefully benefit the scientific community working in Arab settings, promote local and international research in this area, and offer descriptive data on how drive for muscularity may interfere with health indicators in the general Arab population.

The Muscularity Bias Internalization Scale (MBIS) captures an individual's endorsement of stereotypical beliefs about muscularity and engagement in self-stigmatizing evaluations about their muscularity. The MBIS has been validated in Chinese men and Lebanese men and women, showing strong internal consistency reliability and construct validity. Because muscularity-related body image concerns are present in Chinese women, there is a need for research to validate the MBIS in Chinese women. The present study examined the factor structure and psychometric properties of the MBIS in a sample of Chinese women. Exploratory factor analysis (n = 300) identified a two-factor structure which showed adequate model fit in confirmatory factor analysis (n = 300), with χ2(76) = 294.63 (p < .001), CFI = 0.98, TLI = 0.98, and SRMR = 0.05. Results also showed that the MBIS in women had adequate internal consistency, two-week test-retest reliability, and good construct validity. Findings suggest that the MBIS is a useful tool for assessing muscularity bias internalization, a potentially important risk factor for muscularity-oriented eating and body image disturbances.

A defining feature of social media is its social interactivity, but limited research has investigated how various aspects of digital social evaluation (i.e., likes, follows, comments) may be related with users' body image concerns. This study investigated the relationships between aspects of digital social evaluation and body image concerns in adolescents. Australian adolescents (N = 245, 58.4 % male, Mage = 13.79, SD = 1.11) completed online surveys measuring digital social evaluation frequency (likes, follows, positive and negative comments about appearance and non-appearance), perceived importance (likes, number of followers), body dissatisfaction, restrictive eating attitudes, and drive for muscularity. Adolescents reported frequently receiving digital social evaluation, with females receiving more positive, but not negative, comments than males. All aspects of digital social evaluation were positively correlated with at least one aspect of body image concern. Controlling for other factors, all three aspects of body image were associated with receiving more frequent positive appearance-based comments, greater restrictive eating attitudes and body dissatisfaction were also associated with greater importance of likes, whilst greater drive for muscularity was associated with less frequent likes and comments. Digital social evaluation should be considered in future longitudinal or experimental research, and media literacy interventions.

BACKGROUND: Small non-coding (snc)RNAs, including microRNAs and P-element induced wimpy testis (PIWI)-interacting-RNAs (piRNAs), crucially regulate gene expression in both physiological and pathological conditions. In particular, some muscle-specific microRNAs (myomiRs) have been involved in the pathogenesis of cancer-induced muscle wasting. The aims of the present study were (i) to profile sncRNAs in both skeletal muscle and plasma of gastrointestinal cancer patients and (ii) to investigate the association among differentially expressed sncRNAs and the level of muscularity at body composition analysis. METHODS: Surgical patients with gastrointestinal cancer or benign disease were recruited. Blood samples and muscle biopsies (rectus abdominis) were collected during surgery. Low muscularity patients were those at the lowest tertile of skeletal muscle index (SMI; CT-scan), whereas moderate/high muscularity patients were in the middle and highest SMI tertiles. SncRNAs in the muscle were assessed by RNAseq, circulating microRNAs were evaluated by qPCR. RESULTS: Cancer patients (n = 25; 13 females, 52%) showed a mean age of 71.6 ± 11.2 years, a median body weight loss of 4.2% and a mean BMI of 27.0 ± 3.2 kg/m2 . Control group (n = 15; 9 females, 60%) showed a mean age 58.1 ± 13.9 years and a mean BMI of 28.0 ± 4.3 kg/m2 . In cancer patients, the median L3-SMI (cm2 /m2 ) was 42.52 (34.42; 49.07). Males showed a median L3-SMI of 46.08 (41.17-51.79) and females a median L3-SMI of 40.77 (33.73-42.87). Moderate-high and low muscularity groups included 17 and 8 patients, respectively. As for circulating microRNAs, miR-21-5p and miR-133a-3p were up-regulated in patients compared with controls, whereas miR-15b-5p resulted down-regulated in the same comparison (about 30% of control values). Sample clustering by muscularity and sex revealed increased miR-133a-3p and miR-206 only in moderate-high muscularity males. SncRNA profiling in the muscle identified 373 microRNAs and 190 piRNAs (72.5% and 18.7% of raw reads, respectively). As for microRNAs, 10 were up-regulated, and 56 were down-regulated in cancer patients versus controls. Among the 24 dysregulated piRNAs, the majority were down-regulated, including the top two most expressed piRNAs in the muscle (piR-12790 and piR-2106). Network analysis on validated mRNA targets of down-regulated microRNAs revealed miR-15b-5p, miR-106a-5p and miR-106b-5p as main interactors of genes related to ubiquitin ligase/transferase activities. CONCLUSIONS: These results show dysregulation of both muscle microRNAs and piRNAs in cancer patients compared with controls, the former following a sex-specific pattern. Changes in circulating microRNAs are associated with the degree of muscularity rather than body weight loss.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Newly created systems called hippotherapy simulators (HS) mimic the primitive movements of a live horse. As they are new systems, research examining their usefulness has been well received. The aim of this study is to research the effects of HS on disease activity, quality of life and muscle strength in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). METHODS: In a prospective, assessor-blinded, block-randomized trial, 48 AS patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either HS or conventional home (CH) exercise therapy. All Participants received 48 sessions, that is 4 sessions a week for 12 consecutive weeks. The primary outcome measures included the quadriceps muscle strength, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI) and Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life Scale (ASQoL). RESULTS: Both groups demonstrated significant improvement in BASDAI, BASFI, BASMI, ASQoL and muscle strength scores compared to the baseline (p < 0.05). BASDAI, BASFI and BASMI scores decreased significantly in the HS group compared to the CH group at week 12 (p=.005, p=.003, p=.045, respectively), but there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of ASQoL and muscle strength scores at week 12 (p=.245, p=.212, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this clinical trial of HS exercises for AS patients indicate a positive effect on disease activity, quality of life and muscle strength. Therefore, horse-riding simulator exercises can be used as an alternative method for the management of individuals with AS.


Hippotherapy simulator exercises indicate a positive effect on disease activity, functionality and muscle strength in people with ankylosing spondylitisFor people with ankylosing spondylitis, hippotherapy simulator exercises are a safe workout for the spine that uses the core muscles.For people with ankylosing spondylitis, the hippotherapy simulator technique can be recommended as a long-lasting and affordable fitness program in the near future.To determine the efficacy of hippotherapy simulation exercise on other systemic chronic inflammatory disease future research are needed.

The slaughter value of live cattle can be assessed during visual conformation scoring, as well as by examining different molecular genetic information, e.g., the myostatin gene, which can be responsible for muscle development. In this study, the F94L, Q204X, nt267, nt324 and nt414 alleles of the myostatin gene (MSTN) were examined in relation to birth weight (BIW), calving ease (CAE), 205-day weaning weight (CWW), muscle score of shoulder (MSS), muscle score of back (MSB), muscle score of thigh (MST), roundness score of thigh (RST), loin thickness score (LTS), and overall muscle development percentage (OMP) of Charolais weaned calves in Hungary. Multi-trait analysis of variance (GLM) and weighted linear regression analysis were used to process the data. Calves carrying the Q204X allele in the heterozygous form achieved approximately 0.14 points higher MSB, MST and LTS, and 1.2% higher OMP, and gained 8.56 kg more CWW than their counterparts not carrying the allele (p < 0.05). As for the F94L allele, there was a difference of 4.08 kg in CWW of the heterozygous animals, but this difference could not be proved statistically. The other alleles had no significant effect on the evaluated traits.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are associated with subsequent alcohol problems, but it is not known whether this association also extends to broader eating disorder symptoms not captured by clinical diagnoses. We assessed the longitudinal association of broad eating disorder symptoms with alcohol problems in a nationwide twin sample (FinnTwin16). METHODS: Finnish women (N = 1905) and men (N = 1449) self-reported their eating disorder symptoms using the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 Bulimia, Drive for Thinness, and Body Dissatisfaction subscales at the mean age of 24.4 years in 2000-2003. A subsample of participants also completed items on drive for muscularity, height dissatisfaction, and muscle-enhancing supplement use. Alcohol problems were assessed 10 years later at the age of 34.1 in 2010-2012 with the Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index. RESULTS: Eating disorder symptoms were associated with later alcohol problems (odds ratio per point increase 1.02-1.18). Bulimia showed stronger associations among men than women (p for interaction .012). Drive for muscularity and height dissatisfaction were also associated with later alcohol problems, but supplement use was not. When accounting for baseline alcohol problems, only Bulimia (among women and men) and Drive for Thinness (among men) were significantly associated with later alcohol problems. Bulimia was also significantly associated with later alcohol problems in within-twin-pair analyses among dizygotic twins, but not among monozygotic twins. DISCUSSION: In a longitudinal setting, eating disorder symptoms were associated with later alcohol problems. Bulimic symptoms were a stronger risk factor for men than women. These associations may be attributable to baseline alcohol problems, childhood environment and genetic liability. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE: This study found that both young adult women and men with broad eating disorder symptoms are at a higher risk of alcohol-related problems than those without such symptoms. Men with bulimic symptoms were at a particularly high risk. These findings emphasize the need for better prevention and treatment of disordered eating, body image concerns and alcohol problems for both young adult women and men.

ABSTRACT

Several problems limit our understanding of the ways that gender and sexual orientation influence disordered eating. These include the reliance on measures that have been developed and validated in samples of cisgender heterosexual women, and the lack of confirmed measurement invariance that allows us to meaningfully compare these experiences between groups. This study was an EFA to CFA exploration of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire in a group of heterosexual, bisexual, gay, and lesbian men and women. In total 1638 participants were recruited via adverts in traditional and social media to complete an online survey. A 14-item, three-factor model of the EDE-Q was confirmed as best fitting the data and measurement invariance between groups was ascertained. Sexual orientation influenced disordered eating and muscularity-related thoughts and behaviours in men but not women. Heterosexual men reported more muscularity-related concerns and behaviours, whereas gay men showed more thinness-related concerns and behaviours. Bisexual participants showed a different pattern, highlighting the importance of treating this group individually and not collating all non-heterosexual participants together. Small but significant effects of sexual orientation and gender have an impact on the kinds of disordered eating thoughts and behaviours one might experience, and could influence prevention and treatment. Clinicians may be able to provide more effective and tailored interventions by taking into account gender and sexual orientation in sensitive ways.


Our idea of what an eating disorder looks like is tied to the kind of participant that is usually included in research. However, a wide range of people struggle with their body image. It can be difficult to measure what kinds of experiences these individuals have as the questionnaires typically used were not validated in marginalised groups. This study aims to see if a commonly used questionnaire is useful in men and women identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual and if there are differences in the kinds of disordered eating thoughts and behaviours that these groups experience. A version of the questionnaire with three factors fits this data well. Sexual orientation does seem to influence the rates of disordered eating in men but not women. Heterosexual men experience more behaviours that might be related to muscularity, whereas gay men show more concerns regarding body shape and leanness. Bisexual men show lower levels of disordered eating. We suggest that considering gender and sexual orientation when treating disordered eating may help clinicians to tailor interventions. Our idea of what an eating disorder looks like is a narrow view of a much broader picture.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of psychometrically sound measures to assess internalized weight and muscularity biases among Arabic-speaking people. To fill this gap, we sought to investigate the psychometric properties of Arabic translations of the Three-Item Short Form of the Modified Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS-3) and the Muscularity Bias Internalization Scale (MBIS) in a sample of community adults. METHODS: A total of 402 Lebanese citizens and residents enrolled in this cross-sectional study (mean age: 24.46 years (SD = 6.60); 55.2% females). Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was conducted using the principal-axis factoring and oblimin rotation to estimate parameters and the parallel analysis to determine the number of factors. CFA was conducted using the weighted least square mean and variance adjusted estimator which was recommended for ordinal CFA. RESULTS: An Exploratory Factor Analysis of the WBIS-3 resulted in a robust single-factor solution for the three items. An examination of the factorial structure of the MBIS revealed a two-factor structure, which showed adequate model fit. We obtained excellent internal consistency as indicated by McDonald's ω coefficients of .87 for the WBIS-3 total score and ranging between .92 and .95 for the MBIS two factor scores. Cross-sex invariance of the MBIS was confirmed at the configural, metric, and scalar levels. Convergent validity was supported by significant correlations between the WBIS-3 and MBIS. Divergent and concurrent validity were approved by showing small to medium correlations between MBIS/WBIS-3 scores and muscle dysmorphia, disordered eating symptoms, and body image concerns. CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that the Arabic versions of the WBIS-3 and MBIS are suitable for use in Arabic-speaking adults.


Individuals with overweight or obesity frequently experience weight-based stigmatization. The widespread belief that weight is a matter of personal will and self-control results in various weight-based stereotypes (e.g., laziness, lack of self-discipline, or neglect). Furthermore, the influence model of body image identifies internalization of societal body ideals as a risk factor for developing body dissatisfaction, and subsequent disordered eating behavior. Hence, internalization of two dimensions of body image ideals, thinness and muscularity, is associated with body dissatisfaction and eating concerns. Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS-3) is a shortened version of the modified version of the Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS-M) designed to evaluate the weight bias internalization. As for the Muscularity Bias Internalization Scale (MBIS), it assesses the extent to which an individual endorses muscularity-based stereotypes and engages in negative self-evaluations due to muscularity. These two scales are not yet validated in Arabic. To that end, we aimed to translate and validate the Arabic version of the WBIS-3 and MBIS in the present study, which would in turn facilitate improved research and clinical practices related to weight and muscularity biases internalization in Arabic-speaking nations. The present findings provide support for the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the WBI-3 and MBIS in examining weight and muscularity biases internalization in Arabic-speaking adults in Lebanon.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Lumbar paraspinal muscles play an important role in maintaining global spinal alignment and are associated with lower back pain; however, only a few studies on the effect of the paraspinal muscles on the surgical outcome exist. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the association of preoperative muscularity and fatty infiltration (FI) of paraspinal muscles with the outcome of lumbar interbody fusion. METHODS: Postoperative clinical and radiographic outcomes were analyzed in 206 patients who underwent surgery for a degenerative lumbar disease. The preoperative diagnosis was spinal stenosis or low-grade spondylolisthesis, and the surgery performed was posterior lumbar interbody fusion or minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. Indications for surgery were a complaint of severe radiating pain that did not improve with conservative treatment and neurological symptoms accompanied by lower extremity motor weakness. Patients with fractures, infections, tumors, or a history of lumbar surgery were excluded from this study. Clinical outcome measures included functional status, measured using the Oswestry disability index (ODI) and visual analog scale (VAS) score for lower back and leg pain. Other radiographic parameters included measures of spinal alignment, including lumbar lordosis, pelvic tilt, sacral slope, pelvic incidence, C7 sagittal vertical axis, and pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis mismatch. Lumbar muscularity (LM) and FI were measured preoperatively using a lumbar magnetic resonance image (MRI). RESULTS: The high LM group showed more significant improvement in VAS score for lower back pain than the low LM group. In contrast, the VAS score for leg pain demonstrated no statistical significance. The high LM group showed more significant improvement in ODI postoperatively than the medium group. The severe FI group showed more significant improvement in ODI postoperatively, whereas the less severe FI group showed more significant improvement in the sagittal balance postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Patients with high LM and mild FI ratio observed on preoperative MRI demonstrated more favorable clinical and radiographic outcomes after lumbar interbody fusion. Therefore, preoperative paraspinal muscle condition should be considered when planning lumbar interbody fusion.

ABSTRACT

Cultural tightness is characterized by strong norms and harsh punishments for deviant behaviors. We hypothesized that followers in tight (vs. loose) cultures would more strongly prefer muscular leaders. This hypothesis was confirmed across seven studies (N = 1,615) employing samples from the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. Using actual political leaders, we demonstrated that the tighter the state's culture was, the more muscular the elected governor was (Study 1). Temporarily situating participants in a tight (vs. loose) culture made them select a leader higher on muscularity but not on body fat, and the effects obtained occurred for both male and female leaders (Studies 2-3B). In addition, we demonstrated the mediating role of authoritarianism and a preference for a dominant leadership in this process (Studies 4-5B). These results demonstrate the importance of considering the interface between culture and the physical appearance of leaders.
