ABSTRACT

Urinary incontinence due to urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI) affects up to 20% of bitches that undergo spaying surgery. Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant whose urinary retention is a reported side effect. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of amitriptyline when compared to estriol orally. Fifteen bitches with a clinical diagnosis of post-spaying UI were evaluated during 60 days in a non-blinded randomized clinical trial. All patients were enrolled after clinical evaluation consisting of anamnesis, physical examination, and complementary exams (complete blood count, biochemical parameters, urinalysis, and abdominal ultrasound). The amitriptyline (AMT) group consisted of 8 bitches, which received the initial dose of 1 mg/kg every 12 h, whereas the estriol (EST) group consisted of 7 bitches which were initially treated with 1 mg/animal every 24 h. Patients underwent clinical evaluation at 7 days, and then at 21 and 60 days of treatment to assess safety and efficacy, as well as adjustments of dose when necessary. A urinary incontinence scale was used to assess the level of incontinence and therapeutic response to treatment. During the period of the study, estriol was fully effective in 71% of cases and amitriptyline in 62%. Both drugs proved safe in the medical treatment of USMI, with adverse effects such as somnolence (AMT, n = 5/8) and male attraction (EST, n = 1/7). The results support the amitriptyline recommendation as a substitute for estriol in USMI treatment.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to observe the effects of 17 ß-estradiol replacements on the fecal microbiota in spayed cats. Individual samples of fresh feces were collected and stored at -80° C. Sequencing of the V3/V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene was used, and bioinformatic analysis was performed. Firmicutes/Bacteriodetes ratio was lower in the group receiving estrogen replacement compared to the SHAM group (P = 0,005). Jaccard index (P = 0.123) and Yue & Clayton index (P = 0.094) did not reveal alpha and beta diversity differences. The linear discriminant analysis effect size (LefSe) identified Firmicutes and MegasPhaera as the biomarkers for the SHAM group, and Burkholderiales, Betaproteobacteria, Sutterellaceae, Suterella, Proteobacteria, Proteobacteria unclassified and Collinsella for the group receiving estrogen replacement.(AU)

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between clinical aspects and urethral lesions with reproductive status and age at neutering in obstructed male cats. METHODS: All cats with compatible signs of urethral obstruction (UO) treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco from 2019 to 2021 were divided into three groups according to their reproductive status: intact; prepubertal neutered; and post-pubertal neutered. Cats with compatible signs of UO were selected for further analysis. Age, clinical signs, age at neutering and age of the first obstructive event were documented. Cats with recurrent obstructive urinary signs or urethral trauma that made catheterization impossible were referred for perineal urethrostomy. The morphology of the excised penises was assessed by histopathological analysis. RESULTS: Of 84 cats with signs of UO included in this study, 28.6% were classified as intact, 28.6% as prepubertal neutered and 42.8% as post-pubertal neutered. Intact cats had a significantly earlier onset of UO compared with prepubertal and post-pubertal neutered cats, as seen by the age at obstruction (3.6 vs 5.7 and 5.5 years, respectively). Similar clinical signs and histopathological lesions were observed in all groups. The main clinical signs observed were stranguria, hematuria and pollakiuria. All cats had some degree of injury in the penile urethra. The most common lesions were hemorrhage, fibrosis and congestion. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: It appears that intact cats had an earlier onset of UO than neutered cats, regardless of age at neutering. Urethral histopathological lesions and clinical signs were similar in both groups. Pediatric neutering represents a useful tool in the control of abandoned and stray animals and the consequent dissemination of zoonoses, thus having a positive impact on public health.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated Brazilians dogs behavior through the Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) and establish if these behaviors have a significant relationship with the age, sex and neutering status of the animal. The questionnaire was answered by owners between November 2018 and April 2020. The sample was divided according to sex (female or male), age (one year or less, from one to three years, from three to seven years, from seven to ten years or more than ten years) and the reproductive status of the animal (neutered or not). For each questionnaire answered, the scores of the 14 behavior categories investigated by C-BARQ were calculated and Spearmans correlation coefficient with a significance level of 5% was used to assess the correlation between these scores with the factors age, sex and reproductive status of the animals (Biostat 5.3 program). The results suggest higher scores for aggressive behavior in older dogs and in neutered dogs. Neutering was also associated with higher scores of fear from other dogs. The findings suggest the need for studies that seek to investigate how castration is linked to these behaviors that can deteriorate the owner-dog relationship.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This case report presents a celioscopy procedure followed by partial salpingectomy (PS) in a pregnant bitch referred to elective video assisted ovariohysterectomy. Through celioscopy it was visualized the embryonic vesicles and PS was performed after conversion to minioceliotomy. The puppies were born by eutocic delivery without clinical alterations. The case suggested that short and regular pneumoperitoneum is not deleterious to dog fetus and video surgery could be used in pregnant bitches. PS allows the fetus development and promotes bitch neutering.(AU)

ABSTRACT

In the feline species, progestins, GnRH agonist implants and melatonin implants are the three main non-surgical contraceptive approaches that are important to discuss today. When available, those can actually come handy in many clinical situations when surgery cannot be performed or should be avoided. To date though, those only offer short to medium term options. Research using gene therapy is however on its way, with encouraging preliminary results. A long term alternative using this technology might become available in the future, changing how we approach contraception in cats in our veterinary clinics.

ABSTRACT

Background: In the last years the number of exotic company animals has been increased, and the demand for neuteringservices for these animals has become greater. By the authors knowledge, there are no records of elective ovariectomyin domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus). The current paper reports a case of elective laparoscopic ovariectomy in adomestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus).Case: A 4-month-old domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus), weighing 45 kg was referred to elective video-laparoscopicovariectomy at the Veterinary Clinics Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (HCV - UFRGS). Physicalexamination and laboratory tests, including hemogram and biochemistry (alanine aminotransferase - ALT, serum albumin and creatinine), were within normal range for the species. Ketamine hydrochloride (Cetamin®) 10 mg.kg-1, xylazinehydrochloride (Xilazin®) 2 mg.kg-1, and midazolam (Midazolam®) 0.5 mg.kg-1 were administered intramuscularly (IM)as pre-anesthetic medication. The anesthetic induction was performed with intravenous (IV) propofol (Propovan®) andanesthesia was maintained with isoflurane (Isoforine®) diluted in O2 by a universal vaporizer with a partial gas rebreathinganesthetic system. Throughout the procedure, were monitoring constantly the invasive blood pressure (IBP), electrocardiogram (ECG) in lead II, peripheral arterial saturation with O2 (SpO2), end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration (ETCO2),and esophageal temperature. The abdominal cavity was accessed through the insertion of three portals (one of 10 mm ofdiameter and other two of 5 mm of diameter). The cavity was inflated with medicinal CO2 until the pressure of 10 mmHgwas achieved. The uterine body and ovaries were identified. The right ovary was suspended and, by a bipolar clamp, theovarian vessels were occluded through electrocoagulation in three distinct locations with approximately 0,5 cm betweenthemselves...(AU)

ABSTRACT

Neutering is a common veterinary recommendation and is often associated with obesity development. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of two different amounts of protein intake by neutered dogs regarding maintenance energy requirement (MER), body composition, and biochemical and hormonal parameters. A total of fourteen healthy adult dogs were fed either a diet containing 59·7 g protein/1000 kcal (4184 kJ) (P60) or a diet with 94·0 g protein/1000 kcal (4184 kJ) (P94) for 26 weeks after neutering to maintain their body weight prior to neutering. A mixed model was fitted to verify diet, time and diet × time interaction effects on biochemical parameters, serum concentrations of insulin, glucagon, leptin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). MER and the body composition data were evaluated within diets (paired t test) and within times (unpaired t test). A time effect was found for fructosamine, TAG, total lipids and IGF-1 serum concentrations. The diet × time interaction was significant for glucagon (P < 0·05). No differences between diets in the MER within each time were found. However, there was a reduction in the MER of dogs fed the P60 diet 26 weeks after neutering (P = 0·042). The fat body mass of dogs fed the P60 diet increased (P < 0·05) after neutering, even without a body-weight change. Some of the biochemical parameters changed over time, but all remained within the normal range. For the period evaluated in the present study, a diet with 94·0 g of protein/1000 kcal (4184 kJ) metabolisable energy seems to be a beneficial nutritional strategy to maintain the MER and the body composition of dogs after neutering.

ABSTRACT

Despite the beneficial goals of fluid therapy administered during surgery, volume overload can cause deleterious effects, such as alterations on hematimetric parameters. Thus, the objective of this paper was to evaluate two different cristaloid infusion rates during the surgical period and its effects on the 24-hour post-surgical period. Two groups of six animals each were used in the present study, one received 10mL/kg/h (G10) of 0,9% sodium chloride solution and the other 5mL/kg/h (G5) of the same solution. Packed cell volume (PCV) was evaluated in 10 different times during the 24 hours following surgery. The results did not show significant differences between groups, but they showed a major tendency of hemodilution in G10. A significant decrease of PCV was observed after induction of anesthesia. Decrease of PCV after the end of surgery in both groups was also observed, and the return to PCV basal values was observed 12 hours after the procedure in G10 and after eight hours in G5, showing a tendency of prolonged hemodilution in G10.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Cases: 1- An eleven-month-old bitch was admitted at the HV-UPF nine days after OVH performed elsewhere, with omentum evisceration due to suture dehiscence. During emergency surgery both ovaries were found surrounded by nylon tie-raps and fi brous tissue adherence. Peritonitis signs were recognizable. Bilateral ovariectomy with nylon 2-0 was performed and the remaining uterus was removed. 2- A five-years-old bitch was referred to the HV-UPF ten days after OVH performed elsewhere, with apathy and suture dehiscence. Free liquid was identified around the bladder and kidneys using the ultrasound exam. Intense hemorrhage from uterine vessels was found during celiotomy. A nylon tie-rap was found loose on the abdominal cavity and another couple were found at both ovaries surrounded by fibrous tissue adherence. Bilateral ovariectomy with nylon 2-0 was performed and a blood transfusion was necessary. 3- A three-years-old bitch was admitted at the HCV-UFRGS six days after OVH performed at another institution, presenting suture dehiscence and evisceration. During emergency surgery, bladder, intestine and musculature necrosis due to the contact with sharp edged nylon tie-raps (prior placed as hemostatic devices), intense fibrous tissue adherence and peritonitis were identified. 4- A two-years-old bitch was referred to the HCV-UFRGS one year after OVH performed elsewhere, with a four-month p

Background: Routine neutering of bitches is typically carried out by ovariohysterectomy (OVH) in Veterinary Medicine, seen by many as a simple procedure. During the conventional approach the points of attachment of the uterus and ovaries are double ligated with absorbable or non-absorbable sutures or even with titanium clamps. It has been described the use of non-surgical polyamide tie-raps as a hemostatic closure method by some authors but there are few papers describing the consequenses of such use. The aim of this study is to report four cases of surgical complications associated with nylon tie-raps use on OVHs on bitches referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospitals of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (HCV-UFRGS) and Passo Fundo University (HV-UPF), both at the State of Rio Grande do Sul.Cases: 1- An eleven-month-old bitch was admitted at the HV-UPF nine days after OVH performed elsewhere, with omentum evisceration due to suture dehiscence.
