ABSTRACT

Medical education in China has undergone many changes amid the revolution of medical education worldwide. The Healthy China initiative in the new era highlights the increasing demand for a high-quality children's health service system as well as more excellent pediatricians. This article aims to delve into the current opportunities and challenges of pediatric education in China, summarize the response strategies, and take a look at the new mode of talent cultivation in pediatric medicine. With the rapid shift in the newborn population, the strengthening of multidisciplinary collaboration, the development of medical informatization, and the continuous improvement in scientific research levels, pediatric medical education is facing unprecedented opportunities. However, the late start of pediatrics and the lack of high-level talents have also brought great challenges to pediatric medical education. Therefore, future efforts should be focused on multi-disciplinary cooperation and innovative education and teaching to nurture pediatrician-scientists with innovative abilities and practical experience.

ABSTRACT

Biomedical engineering is a relatively young interdisciplinary field based on engineering, biology, and medicine. Of note, the rapid progress of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies has made a significant impact on the biomedical engineering field, and continuously bring innovations and breakthroughs. Recently, ChatGPT, an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI company, has gained tremendous attention due to its powerful natural language generation and understanding ability. In this study, we explored potential of GPT-4 in the eight branches of biomedical engineering including medical imaging, medical devices, bioinformatics, biomaterials, biomechanics, gene and cell engineering, tissue engineering, and neural engineering. Our results show that the application of GPT-4 will bring new opportunities for the development of this field.

Cultivating medical ethics and style in the new era with fine TCC means achieving creative transformation and innovative development of fine TCC, fundamentally nourishing and nurturing medical ethics and style in the whole process. It is important to firm cultural confidence, continue to make great efforts to inherit and promote the fine TCC, especially the traditional Chinese medicine culture; strengthen cultural education, build an "antique" education system of medical ethics and style, and focus on integration and innovation to improve the effectiveness of medical ethics and medical style cultivation in the new era.

ABSTRACT

In the new era, the integrity culture can provide important support for promoting the comprehensive and strict governance of the Party to the in-depth development, and helping the high-quality development of public hospitals. The First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University has implemented the construction of integrity culture of public hospitals in the new era from three aspects: conceptual culture, institutional culture, and environmental culture. The construction of the integrity culture has been integrated into hospital culture and hospital governance, playing a role in value orientation, behavioral constraints, and environmental purification, ensuring the healthy development of the hospital. However, there is still room for improvement in top-level design, vitality, effective synergy, and effectiveness in meeting the requirements of the new era. It is also necessary to comply with the requirements of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China′s " Opinions on Strengthening the Construction of Integrity Culture in the New Era", excavate the ideological connotation of hospital integrity culture construction, compact responsibilities, and improve work quality and efficiency by anchoring the work positioning of " the greatest of the country", clarifying the fundamental task of " cultivating roots and casting souls", strengthening the coordination of " political responsibility", and implementing measures throughout the cycle.

ABSTRACT

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China(CPC), the CPC and the government have highligh-ted the development of traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and issued a series of policies, such as the Plan for Protection and Deve-lopment of Chinese Medicinal Materials(2015-2020) forwarded by the General Office of the State Council in 2015, the Plan for Healthy Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine(2015-2020) released by the General Office of the State Council in the same year, the Healthy China 2030 Plan published by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council in 2016, the Law of the People's Republic of China on Traditional Chinese Medicine which took effect on July 2017, On the Preservation and Innovative Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine promulgated by CPC Central Committee and the State Council in 2019, and Plan for the Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine during the 14th Five-Year Plan Period of China released by the General Office of the State Council in March 2022, to promote the development of the TCM industry, which have brought historical opportunities to the TCM industry. However, TCM industry faces various challenges in the development. In terms of drug development in TCM, the current studies mainly focused on the chemical research and technical requests, which neglected TCM characteristics and cased in conformity between new drug transformation of TCM and clinical practice. Therefore, a more considerable and profound authoritative guideline is needed, and innovative thought and research are necessary for academics and the industry. Through the investigation of the development TCM industry in recent years, this study summarized the policies on and trends of Chinese medicinal materials, new drug development in TCM, catalogue of national basic drugs, and national basic health insurance, and proposed suggestions for further development of TCM industry.

ABSTRACT

The processes underpinning the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of chemicals have not changed appreciably in the last 30 years. It is unclear how successful these processes are in protecting the environment from any adverse effects of chemicals. To ascertain if the current methodology can be improved, and if so, how, we invited experts to suggest how the current ERA process could be improved. They were not asked to select from a list of suggestions. The 36 experts made 109 suggestions for improvement, which could be grouped into 33 categories. The category that received the most support, from 12 experts, was to utilise a broader range of scientific information, including all up-to-date information, in ERAs. The second most popular category, supported by 10 experts, was the suggestion to regulate mixtures of chemicals; the current regulatory process involves chemical-by-chemical assessment. Two quite radical proposals were suggested. One was to replace the regulator with artificial intelligence. The other was to establish a new competent authority that would appoint groups of experts, each including representatives of the range of stakeholders, to decide which studies were required, commission those studies, then conduct the ERA based on the results of those studies. These two radical proposals, which the authors support strongly, are not necessarily mutually exclusive. We conclude that the present ERA process could be improved to better protect the environment from the myriad of chemicals in use.
